Chapter 4

Author: Flying Saltfish
Early the next morning, Vincent made a quick trip to his university campus. It was nearing the end of the semester, and he'd be graduating soon. There weren't many classes he needed to attend now. He'd made the trip to get a few things.

The moment he stepped through the doors of the academic building, he heard someone calling his name.

"Vince! Over here!"

Without even turning around, Vincent knew who it was—Tristan Murray.

Although they'd already talked online yesterday, this was the first time Vincent was seeing Tristan face-to-face following his rebirth. He couldn't help feeling a little emotional.

After turning toward Tristan, he froze for a moment.

Following his imprisonment in his previous life, Tristan was the only one who stuck by him. Even when his own family had avoided him like the plague, Tristan ran around trying to find a lawyer who could get him out.

"Why are you staring like that, Vince? I'm starting to get embarrassed. We're both straight, aren't we? Don't act like you've fallen in love with me," Tristan teased.

Vincent laughed. A warm feeling spread through his chest, though his tongue remained sharp. "Get over yourself, will you? I'd never be interested in you."

The two headed up the building together.

Suddenly, Tristan produced an envelope from his pocket and held it out with a mysterious smile.

"Remember our agreement? We said we'd go abroad and make something of ourselves together. Well, check this out. It's an invitation to join the top game design institute in Mendoria, and we both get one. Aren't I the greatest friend ever?"

Vincent accepted the envelope, which also contained an application form to fill out. A wave of emotion surged through him as he ran his fingers over the familiar logo.

In his previous life, he had voluntarily given up this opportunity because he wanted to stay with Samara. What a shame that had been.

"Thanks, buddy." Vincent clutched the envelope, his gaze determined.

This time, he wasn't going to let this chance slip by.

Grinning smugly, Tristan said, "I knew you'd say that."

Vincent chuckled. Heading abroad for his studies would not only make up for one of his greatest regrets from his previous life but would also put some distance between him and the people he didn't want to see. He'd be killing two birds with one stone.

"By the way, I've already started looking into the Jensen family's situation. I'll let you know as soon as I get the information," Tristan said, changing the subject.

Neither one of them brought up the email and messages they exchanged yesterday.

The two of them had become friends because of a game, and they had spent years pursuing the career they both loved.

Vincent was highly talented and hardworking as well. He had long since made a name for himself in the game industry. However, since he kept a low profile, no one besides Tristan knew his true identity.

Meanwhile, Tristan served as his strategist. He handled all the communication while Vincent focused on the technical side. The two formed a perfect partnership.

In his previous life, Vincent had used his secret identity to solve countless problems for Samara behind the scenes. Thinking about it now, he found his behavior then utterly absurd.

By the time Vincent and Tristan parted ways, the sky had already turned dark. Vincent still had the application form in hand and was inwardly contemplating how to bring it up with Walt.

Just as he reached the school gates, a familiar black sedan suddenly pulled up in front of him. His heart lurched.

Wasn't that Samara's car?

Just as he turned to leave, a door opened, and the driver stepped out to respectfully escort him into the car.

"This way, please, Mr. Harper."

Vincent had no choice but to approach the car. He immediately spotted Samara sitting in the back seat. He was busy trying to come up with an excuse to leave when she grabbed his arm and yanked him right into the car.

The door closed, and the lock fell. He was now stuck.

Samara had a strange look in her eyes as she looked at Vincent. She abruptly said, "I missed you."

The words exploded in Vincent's ears, making him agitated. She was so close to him, and the memories of the past came flooding back, suffocating him.

He clutched the application form, the paper crinkling loudly in the silence of the car.

Samara finally noticed the document in his hand, and her eyes immediately sharpened.

"You want to go abroad?"

Vincent never felt as pressured as he did now. He lifted his eyes to meet her confronting gaze. Despite his uneasiness, he firmly nodded. "Yes. I plan on going abroad."

Saying those words gave him a sense of relief, but at the same time, he keenly sensed the brewing storm.

Samara's expression darkened instantly. Anger churned in her eyes, but she didn't blow up right away. She fully understood that she'd made some grave mistakes in their previous life—and the pain she'd inflicted on him as a result.

Now that she had a chance to start over, she wasn't going to let Vincent leave her sight.

"I won't let you go."

She suddenly closed the distance between them and grabbed him by the neck with both hands, pulling him close. Without a moment's hesitation, she leaned in to press her lips against his.

The next morning, Vincent officially began his volunteer work. With his background in game design and art, he naturally became the children's new art teacher. As he watched these children, he felt a newfound sense of purpose. He silently resolved to teach them everything he knew without reservation."Mr. Harper, did I draw this correctly?"A young girl scurried up to him, with a mix of shyness and anticipation, her eyes crinkling as she smiled. He didn't hesitate to crouch down and take her hand, slowly guiding her for each line. Soon, a lively butterfly appeared on the page."You're amazing, Mr. Harper!" The girl's eyes widened with admiration and surprise. "Can I become as good as you in the future?""Of course."Vincent gently patted her head and said earnestly, "As long as you like drawing and work hard at it, you'll definitely be great at it."In the afternoon, the sun burned fiercely overhead. Vincent sat in a corner of the yard, his gaze fixed on the group of children sca

Night fell quickly at Lynesville. Before long, the sky was starting to darken.Vincent slipped out of the dorm building and took a deep breath of the evening mountain air. His mind and his body both seemed to relax. The mountains were quiet at this hour. Only a few cicadas chirped, which sounded soothing for some reason.Clutching his phone tightly, he felt his mind churning in an unsettled manner. He didn't know if Samara would find him here.He silently prayed, hoping she would let him go and cancel this absurd engagement."Vincent."Out of nowhere, a voice came from behind, startling him. He turned around and saw Winnie."Why aren't you getting ready for bed yet?" she asked, her smile unusually warm in the night."I came out to watch the sunset. In the past, I didn't really get to come to places like this much."Vincent was referring to his past life. Back then, Samara had been his entire world. Her wants and her desires had been the only guiding forces in his life. For her

After completing the final exam before their graduation, Tristan organized a get-together with Vincent and Winnie. They would soon be busy with their own lives and careers, and it wouldn't be easy for them to meet up as a group.More importantly, the news of Vincent's upcoming engagement in a few days had come as a rather sudden shock to them."Vincent, didn't you brush us off a while ago, saying it wasn't even close to happening yet? Why are you suddenly getting engaged?" Tristan gave Vincent a pat on the shoulder, his expression disbelieving.Vincent gave a rueful smile. There was no way he could explain this matter in detail, so he could only shake his head in response.Winnie also smiled bitterly, saying, "Congratulations, Vincent."What else could she do, other than to congratulate him? They were fated to move on with their own lives now, never to be one.Just as the atmosphere turned slightly awkward, Vincent's phone buzzed with a message from the student club's group chat.

"Since Ms. Copeland has shared her thoughts on this matter, I have no objections at all." Walt was smiling courteously. One thing was clear to him now—Samara was genuinely keen to marry Vincent. She wanted the engagement to be finalized within a week! She was clearly rushing to get things settled. The atmosphere grew a little strange as all five people in the private dining room harbored different thoughts.Vincent couldn't be more disgruntled, and Zachary was ashen-faced as well. He felt like he'd swallowed a fly.For most of the bachelors in Seabridge, Samara was the woman of their dreams. She had both the looks and the family background, making her practically perfect in every way.Zachary was no exception to that either, so how could he not be frantic when Samara was about to end up in the hands of a loser like Vincent? But no matter how agitated he was, he couldn't think of a way to ruin the engagement just yet. He could only grit his teeth and curse inwardly at Vincent, ste

Vincent deliberately avoided all mention of his "illness" back then. He hoped that Mabel would assume he lacked proper etiquette and would thereby disapprove of the marriage. But Samara stepped in, her voice gentle as she explained on his behalf, "Vincent wasn't feeling well that day, Mom. That's why he didn't attend the dinner party.""I see. Well, that's understandable," Mabel said with a smile, still clutching Vincent's hand as she looked at him with unmistakable affection and trust. "From the moment I saw you, Vincent, I felt a sense of closeness. I'll have to entrust Samara to you from now on."Vincent's emotions churned. He was caught off guard by Mabel's words. "Mrs. Copeland, I…""Don't worry, Mom. Vincent takes excellent care of me," Samara interrupted once more, her smile complicated. She thought back to her previous life. He had indeed taken superb care of her, so much so that after losing him, she had nearly become incapable of living on her own.Samara studied Vincen

Taken aback, Vincent looked down at the suit. It was indeed worthy of a luxury brand. When he saw himself in the mirror, he noticed how refined and composed he looked.Just then, he spotted Samara in the corner, her expression triumphant. Suddenly, he started to suspect that she might've orchestrated his trouble with the zipper in the first place."You look very handsome. As expected of the man I've chosen."Before he could even process the words, she'd already leaned in to kiss him on the cheek before taking his arm with a smile. She tugged him toward the entrance."Let's go. We shouldn't keep our parents waiting."Vincent was stunned by the kiss. He opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out. In the end, he stayed silent.Just what the hell was Samara trying to do?He searched her eyes for an answer, but all he saw was a mix of unreadable emotions. He ground his teeth, feeling an inexplicable sense of frustration.Vincent wanted nothing more than to keep his distance fro
