RUBY'S POV

The breeze that afternoon was soft against my skin as I sat beneath the large tree with Harrison beside me. The picnic blanket stretched across the green grass while baskets of food sat open around us untouched because Harrison had spent more time staring at me than eating anything.

I could feel his gaze even without looking at him.

“You’re doing it again,” I muttered softly while arranging the fruits on the plate.

“Doing what?”

“Looking at me like I’m about to disappear.”

RUBY'S POV The breeze that afternoon was soft against my skin as I sat beneath the large tree with Harrison beside me. The picnic blanket stretched across the green grass while baskets of food sat open around us untouched because Harrison had spent more time staring at me than eating anything.I could feel his gaze even without looking at him.“You’re doing it again,” I muttered softly while arranging the fruits on the plate.“Doing what?”“Looking at me like I’m about to disappear.”A faint smile touched his lips. “Can you blame me?”I rolled my eyes though my cheeks warmed slightly.Ever since our misunderstanding had been settled, Harrison had been calmer around me. Softer. Like he was trying to make up for every harsh word he had thrown at me during the past few weeks. His hand slowly moved toward my stomach again.I looked down as his fingers brushed gently over my pregnant belly. The movement was so careful. So protective.Almost like he was afraid touching me too hard would br

  • A Night In Daddy's Bed   Chapter 115

HARRISON'S POV An hour before dawn, the roads had been glazed with rain, while ribbons of fog drifted in and out through the drizzle like ghosts refusing to settle.Stealing Elisa's car barely registered on my list of problems. The real challenge was managing the clutch with a left leg that had become almost useless.Somewhere outside Wrexham, exhaustion finally overtook me. I pulled onto a muddy farm track, switched off the engine, and fell asleep almost instantly. Headlights sweeping across distant hedgerows kept bleeding into my dreams, merging with images of Elisa until I could no longer separate memory from nightmare.I saw her blue lips. Her wide, staring eyes.Eyes that still seemed to follow me.Questions spun endlessly through my head, circling like a record with the needle jammed deep in the groove.Poor Elisa.Worry about your own alibi.Jock's words kept replaying themselves. What had he meant by that? Even if I somehow managed to prove I hadn't killed Catherine, which no

HARRISON'S POV Thumb and forefinger pinched together, I eased the key into the lock. One turn. Then another. I switched keys and opened the second lock. The door finally gave way with a soft click.A pile of mail spilled across the rug beneath the letter flap. She hadn’t been home in days.My footsteps echoed across the polished timber floorboards as I stepped inside. The lounge still carried that same boutique atmosphere Elisa loved so much, with embroidered cushions scattered carefully across the sofa and Indian rugs layered over the dark wood floors. Somewhere in the silence, an answering machine blinked insistently. The tape had reached its limit and kept clicking softly between messages.I saw her legs first. She lay sprawled across the Elizabethan loveseat, her ankles taped tightly together with wide strips of brown masking tape. Her body had slumped backward awkwardly, and a black plastic garbage bag had been pulled over her head, secured cruelly around her neck with more tape

HARRISON'S POV Jock gathered his things slowly before turning back toward me. For a moment he stood there holding the front door key between his fingers. Then, without a word, he placed it carefully on the kitchen counter.I caught him glancing upstairs, hesitation flickering across his face as though he were considering saying goodbye to Ruby. In the end he thought better of it.Then he left. The front door clicked shut behind him, and instantly a hollow unease settled inside me. The police were still outside somewhere in the darkness. Jock could hand me over to them so easily. The thought lodged itself in my chest before I could reason it away.A few moments later Ruby came downstairs. Her hair was almost dry now, loose around her shoulders, and she wore pyjama bottoms beneath an oversized rugby jumper. I stood motionless in the garden, watching her through the French doors. She crossed the kitchen quietly, filled a glass with water, then turned toward the doors to make sure they w

  • A Night In Daddy's Bed   Chapter 112

Ruby’s POVThe loneliness was beginning to eat me alive.Every single day Harrison left before sunrise and returned long after it got dark, looking exhausted and irritated. Half the time he barely touched his food before disappearing into his office again with another file in his hand and his phone pressed against his ear.The entire mansion had started feeling cold. And with my pregnancy hormones making every emotion feel ten times stronger, I found myself overthinking everything.Especially us.I sat curled up on the couch with a blanket wrapped around my body when I heard footsteps downstairs. At first I stiffened.Fear instantly gripped me.Harrison had warned me repeatedly not to trust anyone because of everything going on around Catherine Thompson’s death. The police had practically been breathing down his neck lately and even though he tried to act calm around me, I could see the pressure weighing heavily on him.The front door opened quietly. Then his familiar scent reached me

  • A Night In Daddy's Bed   Chapter 111

HARRISON'S POV The black cab dropped me on Primrose Hill Avenue and I walked the remaining quarter-mile home. My mind was spinning wildly, but beneath the confusion ran a cold surge of energy that swept away every trace of exhaustion. All my pathetic attempts to protect people from something I barely understood had become a joke. Somewhere, somebody was laughing at me.What a fool. All this time I had clung to the comforting illusion that tomorrow might somehow be better. “Wake up and smell the roses,” Jock was always saying.Fine.Now I understood.Tomorrow wasn’t going to be different.Every single day was going to get worse. At the end of my street I slowed, straightened my clothes, and moved carefully along the pavement, watching for uneven paving stones. The upper floors of the house were dark except for the bedroom and the bathroom light glowing on the first landing. Then something made me stop.Across the road, beneath the deeper shadows of the plane trees, I caught the dull g

RUBY’S POVFor a moment, neither of us spoke. The air in Harrison’s bedroom suddenly felt too thick to breathe. My eyes stayed glued to the phone in his hand. To the photograph. My stomach twisted violently, it was unmistakably me. Curled slightly on the bed.The silk sheets tangled around my legs.

HARRISON’S POVThe conference room in Grey & Carter Legal was exactly the kind of place people get contracts that will change their lives. Dark wooden panels lined the walls, the long table polished to a mirror finish. The blinds were half drawn against the afternoon sun, leaving the room washed in
