LOGINSALEM’S POV
“Girl, I still can’t stop thinking about what happened Friday,” Rejoice said.
I ran a hand through my hair. “Me too, I was so shocked,” I said.
For a number of reasons.
First, there was the one that I could not even tell anyone. Atlas almost kissed me in the office… until we were interrupted, but still.
I had to place my hand on my chest to calm my heart.
Even now, just thinking about it made me feel like my ceiling was spinning.
Maybe I was just in my head about it all… I mean, he did not really like me like that, so why was he going to kiss me in the first place?
Maybe he had only gotten close because he wanted to say something and I had completely misunderstood the situation.
Yes.
That had to be it.
Because what other explanation was there?
I was probably just thinking too deeply about things.
But that was not the most shocking part of it all. After Michael knocked on the office door, he handed us the flash drive with the evidence.
It was Benjamin who tampered with my laptop.
He tried to deny it, but Atlas was not hearing it. He made Benjamin apologize to me in front of everyone, and then suspended him for a week, as well as giving a very notable slash to his monthly salary…
And that was Atlas going easy on him after I pleaded for him.
Atlas wanted to fire him on the spot.
But hey, I knew how tough the employment market was these days, and even if Ben was an asshole, he did not deserve to be a jobless asshole.
Me and my big heart, I know.
Rejoice laughed. “Well, you are married to the big boss now; I would not have expected anything less.”
“Rejoice, I already told you, it is not like that between him and me.”
“Whatever.”
Ever since I told Rejoice about Atlas and me, she has had this fairytale cooked up in her head about this harsh boss who is only soft with his lover, and one day he claims her in front of everyone—blah, blah, blah, you know how the rest of the story goes.
But she was wrong for a multitude of reasons.
For one, Atlas Knight was not in love with me. Hell, I think that he could barely even tolerate me, and to think that he married me because he was somehow smitten with me all of a sudden was not true.
I was his debtor, and until I could pay him back, he just had to put up with me.
That was all there was to it.
At least, that was what I kept telling myself.
Rejoice scoffed. “You really think that he would have married you without feeling anything?”
“Well, I don’t even know…”
“Exactly! You don’t know.”
I rolled my eyes.
“Rejoice, you are making something out of nothing.”
“Am I really?”
“Yes.”
“You are literally married to him.”
“I know that.”
Like I couldn’t be any more aware about it…. I was literally the one who signed the papers and sealed my fate.
I stopped talking when I heard the sound of the doorbell.
My face scrunched up in confusion.
I was home alone today.
My mother was still at the hospital with my dad. His surgery was successful, but she refused to leave his side until he was ready to come back. And I definitely was not expecting any visitors.
I sat upright instantly.
Who on earth was at the door?
“… Salem, are you even listening to what I am saying?”
“Rejoice, I’ll call you back in a minute,” I said.
“Wait…”
“Seriously, I will call you back,” I said and hung up.
Goosebumps appeared all over my body, and the hairs on my skin were all suddenly at attention.
My heart was beating at a pace that was far too fast to be considered normal.
“W-who is it?” I asked shakily.
The only reply I got was louder knocking.
Whoever was at the other side of the door had some sort of attitude problem, at least that much was sure. And there was only a handful of people that I knew that acted like they always had an enormous stick lodged up their ass.
It was not even dark yet, so why was I so scared?
No, fear was not the right word to use; I was nervous… the kind that settled into your spinal cord and made me feel like I was having shocks with each step that I took in the direction of the door.
I swallowed hard.
There was another knock on the door.
This one was louder.
“Coming!” I called out, although my voice came out with a slight crack that made me sound more of a mouse than anything.
I was not a fan.
The second I opened the door, my mouth dropped open.
There he was standing in front of the door in a crisp black three- piece suit even though it was a weekend, with temperature way too hot for this many layers.
I had a feeling, but of all people in the world…. Why did it have to be him?
Right now, when I had bed head and I was dressed in a baggy raggedy shirt that I dug out of my dad’s old clothes pile, and a pair short shorts?
This was so embarrassing.
“Y-You…”
He arched his brow at me.
“Aren’t you going to let me in?”
SALEM’S POVI froze. And not in the standing still for only a few seconds, no, I was completely immobile. I could not move, I could not blink, heck I could not even breathe, just stood there like a god damn garden gnome.Atlas pushed past me and walked inside with all the confidence of the man who had the entire world at his feet.“Your house is pretty cozy,” he said.It was like someone had poured a bucket of cold water over my head and my eyes widened. I quickly closed the door and followed in after him.“Mr. Knight, what are you doing here?”He just stopped abruptly, turned to me wordlessly and just glared.“…”He kept on glaring until everything just clicked. I turned bright red and cleared my throat.“Sorry… um, Atlas, what are you doing here?” I asked. He smiled.“Is this how you welcome your guest, Salem?” Then he chuckled like he just thought of something funny. “Not just an ordinary guest, your husband.”I gaped at him. This man, sometimes I could not just understand what he

MARYLYN’S POV“Ahhhhhhh!!”I slid all of the contents on my table to the ground, not even batting an eye when they came crashing to the floor. My head was banging; my heart was pounding heavily against my ribs.My nails dug so deeply into my palms that I could feel blood bead beneath them... But even then, none of it was enough to calm the anger that was brimming deep within my soul.Salem, that bitch. The reason that Atlas was so cold to me today was because of her. He actually scolded me and defended her in front of everyone.I had never been more embarrassed in my life!I wiped the stubborn tears that escaped my eyelids with the back of my hand. No, I could not cry!Crying was for those who had lost the battle, and I never lose. Atlas was mine! He was mine years ago, and he is still mine right now. He did not have to love me yet—I was willing to wait—but he had to be with me.Our families said so.We were meant to be together. And I would not let some gutter rat get in the middle o
ATLAS’S POV“Mr. Knight!” Salem whisper-yelled the second we stepped into my office.I released her hand and locked the door before turning to face her. “We are finally in a private space, Salem. What did I say about dropping the titles?”My voice sounded stiff, but that was because I was one wrong move away from completely losing my mind.I couldn't even begin to explain how pissed off I was.My office was just across the hall, and she had allowed herself to be slapped and humiliated in front of everyone as though she weren't a fucking Knight. Why was it so hard for her to ask for help?My eyes remained fixed on the injury at the corner of her lip.Salem turned a bright shade of pink and lowered her head. “Sorry, um… Atlas.”I smirked, shaking my head slightly. “Come on.”I took her hand again and led her toward one of the chairs in my office before pointing at it.She stared at me, confused.“Sit,” I said, as though it were the most obvious thing in the world. She squeaked and plopp
SALEM’S POV“What is going on here?”The entire office went dead silent once his deep, throaty voice rang out, holding no ounce of softness. The only thing that was going through my head right now was, oh, shit.I was screwed—totally, utterly screwed. He was now standing in front of all of us, arms folded and a solid glare set on his face.He turned to the two security men who were holding me. “Let her go!”They dropped their iron grip on me, and I was left massaging my arms. A small part of me was lit up with the hope that maybe he was coming to save me, but I was just being delusional.“I believe I asked a question,” he said again.Marilyn rushed over to him and attached herself to his arm. “Oh, Atlas, you have no idea… I am just taking care of work like you said. The person who made the mistake and caused us to suffer a loss with Trenton Corp has to be fired,” she said, looking at me with a disgusted sneer. My gaze dropped to the floor.Of course. Marilyn was here and he adored her
SALEM’S POV“Girl, this is huge news!” Rejoice whisper-yelled.“Tell the whole world, would you?” I said dryly, and she smiled and shrugged. “Sorry,” she said, and we both giggled.“But yeah, it all happened so fast that even I don’t know what to do right now… I am just still processing.”“Well, that is good then. Ben can finally shut up when he finds out that you are the new missus of the office—”“No one is going to find out about this, Rejoice,” I said. She raised her brows at me. “Umm… why the fuck not?”I ran my hand through my hair. “Well, for one reason, Marilyn is going to have my head if she finds out.”“Omo, shit is crazy.”Rejoice is Nigerian, so at this point I was used to her just bringing up random slang from her inventory… And even though I did not understand it all, I could understand it in context sometimes.I heaved a sigh. “Anyway…”Marilyn walked into the office with Ben hot on her heels. She had an extremely angry look on her face.I gulped. This was about me, for
