LOGINSALEM’S POV
I stood there for five minutes after he walked away, wondering what on earth had just happened.
Did my boss just propose that I marry him?
Everything was just so confusing.
I ran a hand through my hair before walking back down the hall to my dad’s hospital room.
I couldn’t bring myself to walk in just yet because Mum was crying again, holding my father’s limp hand in her shaky ones.
“I don’t want to leave, honey, but this is what is best…”
Looking at the state my father was in made my heart squeeze painfully, and tears burned at my eyelids once again.
He looked weaker than I had ever seen him, and his closed eyes gave him a vulnerability that terrified me.
He was so pale.
I folded my arms, feeling my nails dig into my palms as I looked at the various wires and tubes connected to him from all angles.
The steady beeping of the machines filled the room, reminding me of how fragile his life had become.
I guess I hiccupped too loudly, because Mum jerked and turned to look at me.
She quickly wiped the tears from her eyes and looked at me with a shaky smile. “Come in, Salem. I was wondering where you were.”
I swallowed the lump in my throat and quickly walked in to stand beside my father.
“D-Dad…” I said shakily, but there was no reply—just his closed eyes and the slow rise and fall of his chest, the only signs that he was still alive.
I turned to my mother. “He looks so weak.”
She nodded. “You see? This is why we have to sell the house.”
My boss’s proposition flashed through my mind again.
He was willing to pay for my dad’s treatment immediately, meaning we wouldn't have to sell the house.
I hadn't even been able to find a boyfriend since I broke up with Gabriel two years ago…
Mr. Atlas was handsome and wealthy, and even though he was a little bit—scratch that, even though he was extremely terrifying, there would be no harm in marrying him.
At least long enough until I could pay him back.
It wasn't like any of it was real anyway.
With that, my mind was made up.
“Mum, I have found a way to pay for Dad’s treatment immediately, and we don’t have to sell the house.”
She laughed bitterly. “This is not a joke, Salem.”
“I am serious.”
Her eyes widened. “What are you planning to do? Salem, three million is a lot of money. Salem, answer me!”
I took both her hands in mine and shook my head. “No, no, I promise you, Mum, it is not what you think.”
She still didn't look convinced. “Then how—”
I smiled at her. “I got a huge promotion at my office recently, and I took out a six-month advance payment… It should cover it.”
The words tasted bitter in my mouth.
But the thing was, I couldn't tell my mum that her daughter was about to get wifed up by the very boss I had complained about forever, or that I was essentially digging myself into three million dollars of debt.
Nope, I couldn't do that.
Never ever!
Her eyes were wide. “What kind of promotion pays so much?”
I shook my head. “Mum, I know what I am doing… I am not stupid; I wouldn't do anything to put myself in trouble.”
Lies!
I was about to make an absolutely wild decision that could definitely bite me in the ass, but right now, it didn't matter.
“Salem…”
“I can handle it, Mum. Trust me.”
My mother nodded. “You are a blessing, Salem,” she said, pulling me into a hug.
I hugged her back. “Everything will be alright.”
I stayed with Mum for a while before stepping outside to talk to the doctor.
I stopped dead in my tracks.
I thought Mr. Atlas had already left, but apparently he was still here, talking to the doctor.
I walked up to him on shaky legs, but he turned toward me before I even reached him.
He carried a calm aura around him that completely contrasted with how I felt inside. He was as cool as a cucumber, while I was totally freaking out.
I guess being a billionaire who could command the world with a snap of his fingers did that to a person.
I hated the smug smirk on his lips—it was the look of someone who always got what he wanted.
Even now, he was already certain he had won before I even reached him.
“I have already made arrangements with the doctor. Your father’s surgery will be done on the earliest available date.”
“…”
He snapped his fingers in front of my face. “Hello, earth to Miss Grant?”
I swallowed hard. “How… h-how were you so sure that I would say yes?”
He folded his arms. “Are you saying no, Miss Grant?”
“I’m not, but—”
“I guess that is settled then,” he said simply.
Someone please pinch me.
Staring at this man, I was beginning to reconsider my decision, seriously wondering if he was a lunatic.
“With all due respect, Mr. Knight, there is still so much that we have to talk about. All of this is so sudden, and—”
He grabbed my hand and pulled me toward him.
My eyes widened. “Where are we going?”
He looked at me with one eyebrow raised. “Have you not been keeping up with what we’ve been saying, Miss Grant?”
“What are you talking about?”
“I am going to make you my Mrs. Knight, of course,” he said, continuing to pull me along as he walked. He didn't even turn back to face me as he spoke.
My eyes grew as wide as saucers. I tugged back on my hand until we both came to a stop.
He turned to look at me, a muscle ticking impatiently in his jaw.
“What is it, Miss Grant?”
I swallowed hard. “Do you mean right now?!”
SALEM’S POVI froze. And not in the standing still for only a few seconds, no, I was completely immobile. I could not move, I could not blink, heck I could not even breathe, just stood there like a god damn garden gnome.Atlas pushed past me and walked inside with all the confidence of the man who had the entire world at his feet.“Your house is pretty cozy,” he said.It was like someone had poured a bucket of cold water over my head and my eyes widened. I quickly closed the door and followed in after him.“Mr. Knight, what are you doing here?”He just stopped abruptly, turned to me wordlessly and just glared.“…”He kept on glaring until everything just clicked. I turned bright red and cleared my throat.“Sorry… um, Atlas, what are you doing here?” I asked. He smiled.“Is this how you welcome your guest, Salem?” Then he chuckled like he just thought of something funny. “Not just an ordinary guest, your husband.”I gaped at him. This man, sometimes I could not just understand what he
SALEM’S POV“Girl, I still can’t stop thinking about what happened Friday,” Rejoice said.I ran a hand through my hair. “Me too, I was so shocked,” I said. For a number of reasons.First, there was the one that I could not even tell anyone. Atlas almost kissed me in the office… until we were interrupted, but still.I had to place my hand on my chest to calm my heart.Even now, just thinking about it made me feel like my ceiling was spinning.Maybe I was just in my head about it all… I mean, he did not really like me like that, so why was he going to kiss me in the first place?Maybe he had only gotten close because he wanted to say something and I had completely misunderstood the situation.Yes.That had to be it.Because what other explanation was there?I was probably just thinking too deeply about things. But that was not the most shocking part of it all. After Michael knocked on the office door, he handed us the flash drive with the evidence. It was Benjamin who tampered with my l
MARYLYN’S POV“Ahhhhhhh!!”I slid all of the contents on my table to the ground, not even batting an eye when they came crashing to the floor. My head was banging; my heart was pounding heavily against my ribs.My nails dug so deeply into my palms that I could feel blood bead beneath them... But even then, none of it was enough to calm the anger that was brimming deep within my soul.Salem, that bitch. The reason that Atlas was so cold to me today was because of her. He actually scolded me and defended her in front of everyone.I had never been more embarrassed in my life!I wiped the stubborn tears that escaped my eyelids with the back of my hand. No, I could not cry!Crying was for those who had lost the battle, and I never lose. Atlas was mine! He was mine years ago, and he is still mine right now. He did not have to love me yet—I was willing to wait—but he had to be with me.Our families said so.We were meant to be together. And I would not let some gutter rat get in the middle o
ATLAS’S POV“Mr. Knight!” Salem whisper-yelled the second we stepped into my office.I released her hand and locked the door before turning to face her. “We are finally in a private space, Salem. What did I say about dropping the titles?”My voice sounded stiff, but that was because I was one wrong move away from completely losing my mind.I couldn't even begin to explain how pissed off I was.My office was just across the hall, and she had allowed herself to be slapped and humiliated in front of everyone as though she weren't a fucking Knight. Why was it so hard for her to ask for help?My eyes remained fixed on the injury at the corner of her lip.Salem turned a bright shade of pink and lowered her head. “Sorry, um… Atlas.”I smirked, shaking my head slightly. “Come on.”I took her hand again and led her toward one of the chairs in my office before pointing at it.She stared at me, confused.“Sit,” I said, as though it were the most obvious thing in the world. She squeaked and plopp
SALEM’S POV“What is going on here?”The entire office went dead silent once his deep, throaty voice rang out, holding no ounce of softness. The only thing that was going through my head right now was, oh, shit.I was screwed—totally, utterly screwed. He was now standing in front of all of us, arms folded and a solid glare set on his face.He turned to the two security men who were holding me. “Let her go!”They dropped their iron grip on me, and I was left massaging my arms. A small part of me was lit up with the hope that maybe he was coming to save me, but I was just being delusional.“I believe I asked a question,” he said again.Marilyn rushed over to him and attached herself to his arm. “Oh, Atlas, you have no idea… I am just taking care of work like you said. The person who made the mistake and caused us to suffer a loss with Trenton Corp has to be fired,” she said, looking at me with a disgusted sneer. My gaze dropped to the floor.Of course. Marilyn was here and he adored her
SALEM’S POV“Girl, this is huge news!” Rejoice whisper-yelled.“Tell the whole world, would you?” I said dryly, and she smiled and shrugged. “Sorry,” she said, and we both giggled.“But yeah, it all happened so fast that even I don’t know what to do right now… I am just still processing.”“Well, that is good then. Ben can finally shut up when he finds out that you are the new missus of the office—”“No one is going to find out about this, Rejoice,” I said. She raised her brows at me. “Umm… why the fuck not?”I ran my hand through my hair. “Well, for one reason, Marilyn is going to have my head if she finds out.”“Omo, shit is crazy.”Rejoice is Nigerian, so at this point I was used to her just bringing up random slang from her inventory… And even though I did not understand it all, I could understand it in context sometimes.I heaved a sigh. “Anyway…”Marilyn walked into the office with Ben hot on her heels. She had an extremely angry look on her face.I gulped. This was about me, for
