LOGINSALEM’S POV
The longer we maintained eye contact, the faster my heart beat. It was like his eyes were a vacuum, sucking me in and holding me hostage, and suddenly my mind flashed back to last night.
My mouth fell open, and I stopped breathing… I am not even joking.
He arched a brow at me, and I thought I could see amusement dancing in his eyes. “Miss Grant, how long are you going to keep holding onto me like this?”
I immediately pushed away from him and wrapped my arms around myself.
My face felt like it was on fire.
I was such an idiot.
And now, being fired was the least of my problems. I would be lucky if he didn't have me thrown into jail for harassing him in my drunken state—even though he was the one who kissed me.
But technically, I was the one who texted…
And now I was rambling again.
Someone please help me.
I don’t need much, just for the ground to open up and swallow me… yes, that would be highly appreciated right about now.
He snapped his fingers in front of my face, and I quickly blinked, returning to reality.
“Did you hear what I said, Miss Grant?” he asked.
I quickly bowed my head. “Mr. Knight, I am sorry. My actions have been so unprofessional of late, and uncalled for… I swear that it will never happen again. Just please don’t fire me. I cannot—”
“What are you even talking about? Why would I fire you?”
Was he serious?
There was a plethora of reasons why I should be fired, the main one being that… oh, I maybe had drunken sex with my boss last night?
I looked up at him and gulped. “Well, because…”
He smirked and took a step closer to me, dangerously slow, like a lion cornering his prey. My eyes widened, and I stepped back. He stepped forward, and I moved back again until I was trapped between him and the wall.
“S-Sir.”
Was there no one in the corridor?
They could literally see what was happening and stop it, so why was this happening? And why was my body tingling with a foreign emotion that I couldn’t quite understand?
He slowly ran his tongue over his lips before leaning down to ear level. “On second thought, maybe I should have you punished for leaving me like that this morning.”
“…”
What was going on right now?
“Respond to me when I ask you a question, Miss Grant,” he said.
My entire body was trembling. “S-Sir, there was an emergency at the hospital, and I rushed over.”
He reached out his hand and twirled a stray strand of my hair. “What could be more important than your boss, huh?”
I sniffled, and a tear leaked from my eye.
His face morphed into one of worry.
“Miss Grant, talk to me. What is the matter?”
“It’s my father,” I sniffled.
“What is wrong with your father?” he asked.
“He had a stroke, and he needs surgery soon. If not, he might not make it,” I said, wiping my eyes. “The cost of the surgery is three million dollars, and Mum has decided that we sell the house and move back to our hometown. So even if you don’t fire me, I don’t think I can keep working for long anyway.”
“I’ll pay it,” he said.
My mouth nearly dropped to the floor.
I shook my head. “No, no, I cannot possibly accept that, Mr. Knight. But thank you for your kindness.”
“Miss Grant!” His voice was sharp, cutting me off. “I want to help an employee of mine, and as your boss, you should obey me.”
I bit my lip, still unsure.
“Miss Grant, do you really want to leave behind everything that you have worked for when you can just take my help?”
I actually thought about it.
The boss was offering his help. If I accepted, I would be able to pay him back little by little. It didn't matter how long it took. I didn't take handouts, but I would find a way to repay him.
This money could do so much good for us.
It could save Father’s life…
No one knew how long it would take for Mum to sell the house, but this was money that we could have right now.
And lastly, we could stay here.
We would not have to go back to Folks View Island.
I could keep working. Mum would not have to sell the house she and Dad worked so hard to build.
We would not have to step foot on Folks View Island again.
“Okay,” I said. “I’ll accept your help.”
He smiled. “Good choice.”
I cleared my throat. “I should go see my dad—”
“On one condition.”
I stopped dead in my tracks.
Of course.
Mr. Atlas Knight was the CEO of a massive company, and if there was one thing I knew about greedy capitalists, it was that they never did anything for free.
I should have known he would be no different.
“What do you want?” I asked.
“Marry me.”
I choked on my own spit. “What did you say?”
“I said you should marry me, Miss Grant.”
“What about your girlfriend?” I asked.
He frowned at me. “What girlfriend?”
Why was he acting clueless?
Everyone knew that he was smitten with Miss Marilyn Smith. Her father was one of the biggest business moguls in the entire city, and she also worked at Knight Company Ltd.
She was always in his office, and she was the only exception to his coldness.
Why was he suddenly suggesting making me a home wrecker?
And I knew how hypocritical I sounded, especially after I had already slept with him last night.
Still, what did he want to achieve?
“Why are you thinking so much?”
“Mr. Knight, this—”
“Shh,” he said, placing his hand over my lips to shut me up. “Just think about it carefully, and I will see you soon, Miss Grant.”
And with that, he simply walked away.
MARYLYN’S POV“Ahhhhhhh!!”I slid all of the contents on my table to the ground, not even batting an eye when they came crashing to the floor. My head was banging; my heart was pounding heavily against my ribs.My nails dug so deeply into my palms that I could feel blood bead beneath them... But even then, none of it was enough to calm the anger that was brimming deep within my soul.Salem, that bitch. The reason that Atlas was so cold to me today was because of her. He actually scolded me and defended her in front of everyone.I had never been more embarrassed in my life!I wiped the stubborn tears that escaped my eyelids with the back of my hand. No, I could not cry!Crying was for those who had lost the battle, and I never lose. Atlas was mine! He was mine years ago, and he is still mine right now. He did not have to love me yet—I was willing to wait—but he had to be with me.Our families said so.We were meant to be together. And I would not let some gutter rat get in the middle o
ATLAS’S POV“Mr. Knight!” Salem whisper-yelled the second we stepped into my office.I released her hand and locked the door before turning to face her. “We are finally in a private space, Salem. What did I say about dropping the titles?”My voice sounded stiff, but that was because I was one wrong move away from completely losing my mind.I couldn't even begin to explain how pissed off I was.My office was just across the hall, and she had allowed herself to be slapped and humiliated in front of everyone as though she weren't a fucking Knight. Why was it so hard for her to ask for help?My eyes remained fixed on the injury at the corner of her lip.Salem turned a bright shade of pink and lowered her head. “Sorry, um… Atlas.”I smirked, shaking my head slightly. “Come on.”I took her hand again and led her toward one of the chairs in my office before pointing at it.She stared at me, confused.“Sit,” I said, as though it were the most obvious thing in the world. She squeaked and plopp
SALEM’S POV“What is going on here?”The entire office went dead silent once his deep, throaty voice rang out, holding no ounce of softness. The only thing that was going through my head right now was, oh, shit.I was screwed—totally, utterly screwed. He was now standing in front of all of us, arms folded and a solid glare set on his face.He turned to the two security men who were holding me. “Let her go!”They dropped their iron grip on me, and I was left massaging my arms. A small part of me was lit up with the hope that maybe he was coming to save me, but I was just being delusional.“I believe I asked a question,” he said again.Marilyn rushed over to him and attached herself to his arm. “Oh, Atlas, you have no idea… I am just taking care of work like you said. The person who made the mistake and caused us to suffer a loss with Trenton Corp has to be fired,” she said, looking at me with a disgusted sneer. My gaze dropped to the floor.Of course. Marilyn was here and he adored her
SALEM’S POV“Girl, this is huge news!” Rejoice whisper-yelled.“Tell the whole world, would you?” I said dryly, and she smiled and shrugged. “Sorry,” she said, and we both giggled.“But yeah, it all happened so fast that even I don’t know what to do right now… I am just still processing.”“Well, that is good then. Ben can finally shut up when he finds out that you are the new missus of the office—”“No one is going to find out about this, Rejoice,” I said. She raised her brows at me. “Umm… why the fuck not?”I ran my hand through my hair. “Well, for one reason, Marilyn is going to have my head if she finds out.”“Omo, shit is crazy.”Rejoice is Nigerian, so at this point I was used to her just bringing up random slang from her inventory… And even though I did not understand it all, I could understand it in context sometimes.I heaved a sigh. “Anyway…”Marilyn walked into the office with Ben hot on her heels. She had an extremely angry look on her face.I gulped. This was about me, for
ATLAS’S POVI had been in a foul mood since the minute that Salem looked me in the eye and said that whatever was going on between us was not real.Sure, our marriage was only one day old, and we married under, well… special circumstances, but that did not mean that she should just dismiss it all just like that. Not only that, she wanted to keep us a secret. There was a knock on my office door. “Come in.”It was Michael, my personal assistant and also my best friend. “The documents that you asked for, Mr. Knight.”I rolled my eyes. “How many times have I told you to drop the stupid titles, Michael?” I said.“Well, in that case…”He dropped the papers on my table and took a seat on the couch in the office, placing his shoe-clad legs on the coffee table.I did my best to force my eyes away from his feet.“What’s up with you?” he asked.“Does it look like anything is the matter?” I asked.“Well, for one, your face is all scrunched up like someone took a shit in your coffee,” he said.“Ma
SALEM’S POV“Drop me off here, Mr.… um, Atlas,” I said, toying with my fingers.Even now, I still could not believe that I was now Mrs. Knight. What the actual fuck? But Atlas had not said anything about telling anyone about our marriage. And honestly, I did not blame him. I did not even understand yet why he wanted to get married to me in the first place, but it was happening—scratch that, it had already happened.“What are you talking about, Salem?” he asked.I shrugged. “You probably don’t want anyone to know that the two of us are together right now, and the two of us arriving at the office together is not a good look. You are my boss; we have to be professional.”“You…”I quickly interrupted him. “It’s alright, I don’t feel any type of way, so there is no need to explain yourself to me. I understand why you may want to hide the fact that we are married—”“Salem…”“This is not real anyway,” I said, pointing between the both of us.As soon as those words left my mouth, his face har
