SALEM’S POV
“This cannot be happening!”
That was the only thought that flashed through my head as I looked at myself in the bathroom mirror.
My face was flushed bright red.
I turned on the tap and splashed water on my face, hoping that I would just wake up and find out that it was all an elaborate dream.
But when I looked back and saw Mr. Atlas Knight sleeping peacefully on the bed, I knew that this was not a dream. I actually had sex with my boss last night.
Atlas Knight was not only the richest man in the entire city, he also happened to be my boss—the strict man who never smiled at anyone or said more than a few words to anyone.
The worst part? He already had a woman in his heart!
“You are so fired, Salem… so fired!” I muttered to myself over and over again like it was a mantra.
I looked at him again, and now that the realization finally dawned on me, frustrated tears stung my eyelids.
I could not lose this job.
I looked at him again… this man, how could he just be sleeping so peacefully when I was currently losing my mind?
How had I managed to get myself into this mess in the first place?
A few hours earlier…
“Good night, Mr. Knight.”
“Hmmm.”
He replied dismissively without so much as looking up from his phone. I pursed my lips. He was probably texting Miss Kenzie.
Everyone knew that she was the only one the boss could even stand to tolerate. To him, everyone else was just like dirt stuck beneath his feet.
When I noticed that he was not planning on replying to me anytime soon, I walked into my room and closed the door.
I could finally breathe once I was on my own inside my room.
Mr. Atlas Knight was easily the most handsome man I had ever seen, with grey eyes that seemed to see straight through you. But in the same breath, he was also the scariest man I had ever met.
Everyone in the office knew stories about him. One wrong move would not just get you fired; your entire life was over.
Blacklisted, with no way of ever getting gainful employment again.
So tell me why I thought it was a good idea to get drunk on this fateful night?
Well, my dumb ass thought that I deserved a little pat on the back for the deal we had just closed, so I ordered room service.
A cheeseburger and Don Julio was not even a good combo, but that was what I was craving, apparently.
Once I had finished half of the bottle, everything began to feel tingly, and it felt like I was floating… Suddenly, everything was funny.
I grabbed my phone with the intention of texting—I don don't even know at this point. All I knew was that I scrolled through my contacts, everything seemingly blurry until I landed on one.
His.
Me: Do you wanna have some fun…?
Asshole Boss: ?
I rolled my eyes. Was he serious? I did not have to spell everything out for him, did I?
Me: The weather is too cold to spend alone. Why don’t we make good use of this weather for two…? It will be fun.
I was way too out of it to even know what I was texting right now; otherwise, I would have been mortified by my own actions.
He did not respond anymore.
And I know that normal people would have taken this as a sign to stop there and just go to sleep, hoping that they would still have their job…
But no, I decided that I had to send one more text.
Me: My room number is 77089. If you don’t come before midnight, don’t bother coming anymore.
I sat on my bed and stared at the clock, waiting. Nine o’clock turned to ten, and ten turned to eleven.
By the time it was 11:50, I guessed that he was not coming.
11:55
11:59
“This is so stupid,” I muttered to myself and was fully intent on tucking myself in to sleep when there was a knock on the door.
I climbed down from my bed and went to open it.
Mr. Atlas was standing at my door, dressed only in a black robe. His breath was short, and his eyes were wild.
I gulped and pressed my thighs together.
Did the temperature just rise?
“M-Mr. Atlas, w-what are you doing here?” I stammered.
He kicked the door shut behind him, and before I could blink, he was on me. His hands gripped my hips before his mouth crashed onto mine, hot and demanding, his tongue shoving past my lips like he owned them.
I let my eyes close and my hands wrap around his neck, opening my mouth wider so that his tongue could thoroughly explore it.
He tasted like mint, that black coffee he was addicted to, and something else that felt entirely like… him. I wanted more of him.
When we pulled away, he looked down at me with blazing eyes.
I ran my tongue over my lips, and his eyes followed my movement with such intensity. It felt like he wanted to devour me, and in this moment, I was not even sure I had any complaints.
“S-Sir…”
He crashed his lips down on mine again and lifted me up, carrying me toward the bed without breaking the kiss.
He threw me onto the mattress, and I landed with a bounce before he climbed on top of me.
He peppered kisses up my neck and caught my earlobe between his teeth.
“Don’t you dare regret this.”
I tiptoed into the room, quietly put on all of my clothes, and grabbed my purse. Thankfully, the CEO slept like a log and did not even stir.
I could not still be here when he woke up; otherwise…
I don’t even want to think about it right now. I will deal with the consequences later.
My phone vibrated in my hand.
It was my mother.
I picked up the phone. “Hey, Mum,” I whispered.
She was crying on the other end of the phone, and my face immediately morphed into concern.
“Mum, you are scaring me. What’s wrong?”
“My daughter, you need to come to the hospital right now. There is an emergency!”
MARYLYN’S POV“Ahhhhhhh!!”I slid all of the contents on my table to the ground, not even batting an eye when they came crashing to the floor. My head was banging; my heart was pounding heavily against my ribs.My nails dug so deeply into my palms that I could feel blood bead beneath them... But even then, none of it was enough to calm the anger that was brimming deep within my soul.Salem, that bitch. The reason that Atlas was so cold to me today was because of her. He actually scolded me and defended her in front of everyone.I had never been more embarrassed in my life!I wiped the stubborn tears that escaped my eyelids with the back of my hand. No, I could not cry!Crying was for those who had lost the battle, and I never lose. Atlas was mine! He was mine years ago, and he is still mine right now. He did not have to love me yet—I was willing to wait—but he had to be with me.Our families said so.We were meant to be together. And I would not let some gutter rat get in the middle o
ATLAS’S POV“Mr. Knight!” Salem whisper-yelled the second we stepped into my office.I released her hand and locked the door before turning to face her. “We are finally in a private space, Salem. What did I say about dropping the titles?”My voice sounded stiff, but that was because I was one wrong move away from completely losing my mind.I couldn't even begin to explain how pissed off I was.My office was just across the hall, and she had allowed herself to be slapped and humiliated in front of everyone as though she weren't a fucking Knight. Why was it so hard for her to ask for help?My eyes remained fixed on the injury at the corner of her lip.Salem turned a bright shade of pink and lowered her head. “Sorry, um… Atlas.”I smirked, shaking my head slightly. “Come on.”I took her hand again and led her toward one of the chairs in my office before pointing at it.She stared at me, confused.“Sit,” I said, as though it were the most obvious thing in the world. She squeaked and plopp
SALEM’S POV“What is going on here?”The entire office went dead silent once his deep, throaty voice rang out, holding no ounce of softness. The only thing that was going through my head right now was, oh, shit.I was screwed—totally, utterly screwed. He was now standing in front of all of us, arms folded and a solid glare set on his face.He turned to the two security men who were holding me. “Let her go!”They dropped their iron grip on me, and I was left massaging my arms. A small part of me was lit up with the hope that maybe he was coming to save me, but I was just being delusional.“I believe I asked a question,” he said again.Marilyn rushed over to him and attached herself to his arm. “Oh, Atlas, you have no idea… I am just taking care of work like you said. The person who made the mistake and caused us to suffer a loss with Trenton Corp has to be fired,” she said, looking at me with a disgusted sneer. My gaze dropped to the floor.Of course. Marilyn was here and he adored her
SALEM’S POV“Girl, this is huge news!” Rejoice whisper-yelled.“Tell the whole world, would you?” I said dryly, and she smiled and shrugged. “Sorry,” she said, and we both giggled.“But yeah, it all happened so fast that even I don’t know what to do right now… I am just still processing.”“Well, that is good then. Ben can finally shut up when he finds out that you are the new missus of the office—”“No one is going to find out about this, Rejoice,” I said. She raised her brows at me. “Umm… why the fuck not?”I ran my hand through my hair. “Well, for one reason, Marilyn is going to have my head if she finds out.”“Omo, shit is crazy.”Rejoice is Nigerian, so at this point I was used to her just bringing up random slang from her inventory… And even though I did not understand it all, I could understand it in context sometimes.I heaved a sigh. “Anyway…”Marilyn walked into the office with Ben hot on her heels. She had an extremely angry look on her face.I gulped. This was about me, for
ATLAS’S POVI had been in a foul mood since the minute that Salem looked me in the eye and said that whatever was going on between us was not real.Sure, our marriage was only one day old, and we married under, well… special circumstances, but that did not mean that she should just dismiss it all just like that. Not only that, she wanted to keep us a secret. There was a knock on my office door. “Come in.”It was Michael, my personal assistant and also my best friend. “The documents that you asked for, Mr. Knight.”I rolled my eyes. “How many times have I told you to drop the stupid titles, Michael?” I said.“Well, in that case…”He dropped the papers on my table and took a seat on the couch in the office, placing his shoe-clad legs on the coffee table.I did my best to force my eyes away from his feet.“What’s up with you?” he asked.“Does it look like anything is the matter?” I asked.“Well, for one, your face is all scrunched up like someone took a shit in your coffee,” he said.“Ma
SALEM’S POV“Drop me off here, Mr.… um, Atlas,” I said, toying with my fingers.Even now, I still could not believe that I was now Mrs. Knight. What the actual fuck? But Atlas had not said anything about telling anyone about our marriage. And honestly, I did not blame him. I did not even understand yet why he wanted to get married to me in the first place, but it was happening—scratch that, it had already happened.“What are you talking about, Salem?” he asked.I shrugged. “You probably don’t want anyone to know that the two of us are together right now, and the two of us arriving at the office together is not a good look. You are my boss; we have to be professional.”“You…”I quickly interrupted him. “It’s alright, I don’t feel any type of way, so there is no need to explain yourself to me. I understand why you may want to hide the fact that we are married—”“Salem…”“This is not real anyway,” I said, pointing between the both of us.As soon as those words left my mouth, his face har
