Chapter 4 His New Bride Walked In

Author: Ivy Marlowe
Truth be told, I was already back to a perfectly normal weight of 110 pounds. I wasn't fat at all.

However, I could do no right in Damian's eyes. He'd always find some new excuse to humiliate me no matter what I looked like.

His parents weren't any better. They were standing to the side as they looked me over with open disgust and started taking their shots at me, too.

"I used to brag to the neighbors that Damian found himself a pretty girl from the city," his mother spoke with a curled lip. "But just look at her now. Her waist is as thick as a bucket."

His father clicked his tongue. "Look at her size! How much does she eat in a day? And with a body like that, who knows if she'll even be able to have children?"

None of this was new to me.

When I first met Damian's parents, he had taken me back to the rundown little town where he grew up. Their house was old, shabby, and cramped, and his parents started picking me apart from the moment I stepped inside.

The gift I brought wasn't expensive enough. The liquor wasn't the right brand.

To them, nothing I gave them was good enough.

During dinner, they put on that fake act and told me, "These days, respectable people don't treat marriage like a business deal. Nobody expects the families to bankroll the whole wedding anymore."

Then, they gave me a pointed look and added, "In your case, you have no parents to put anything together, and no one in your corner. It'd be pretty shameless of you to expect us to spend a fortune on an event like that."

When I left, they pressed a cheap little card with 200 dollars into my hand like it was some grand gesture and I should weep in gratitude.

Back then, Damian was always going on about how hard his parents had worked to raise him, how much they'd sacrificed, and how I needed to be more understanding.

At the time, I genuinely thought love would conquer all, so I let it all go.

I swallowed every insult, gave in every time, and never once asked him or his family to contribute a dime toward the wedding.

Now that I think about it, my brain cells had clearly rotted away by lovesickness.

Thank God I never actually married him.

My life would've been a living nightmare if I had.

I just shrugged and drawled, "If you think I'm that fat, then call off the wedding. There's still time."

I had always been the one to step back around Damian. I had always been demure and patient, so I wasn't surprised that he would lose it the second I stopped playing nice.

"Elise, what the hell is that supposed to mean?" he shouted. "You think that this wedding has to happen just because the invitations are out and the venue's booked? You think that gives you the right to start acting up?"

His face twisted with anger. "Don't flatter yourself. Plenty of women would die for a chance to marry me. Yet, you think I'd marry a fat pig like you? I'm done."

Then, Damian snatched the microphone and turned to the guests. "Sorry, everyone. It looks like I'll be changing brides today."

He sounded almost proud of himself.

"My maid of honor, Talia Cross, surpasses Elise in every aspect. She's prettier, hotter, and better overall. You're all my witnesses. Elise and I are over. And let me be clear—I'll never take her back even if she begs me to forgive her."

I said nothing as I looked at his smug face, my smile deepening with each ridiculous word pouring out of his mouth.

Whispers immediately erupted through the crowd.

"The maid of honor? He's swapping out the bride for her friend? That's wild."

"Honestly, the bride doesn't even look bad. She's not fat at all. If he's really replacing her on the spot… Well, the maid of honor must be quite the looker."

Damian shot me a smug glance before raising his voice. "Talia, come out. It's our turn now."

Talia gradually entered from outside amid everyone's curious gaze.

As soon as the guests caught sight of her, the entire room came to a halt.

Their eyes widened in surprise as Damian's smug smile froze on his face before cracking into a look of genuine shock.

After Damian was done taking his anger out on her, he dumped Talia on the side of the road like trash. A passerby eventually brought her to the hospital. Unfortunately, she couldn't afford the bills, so she called me for help. Her voice was so weak I could barely hear her through the phone. Still, that didn't stop me from hanging up on her and coldly telling the hospital I didn't know anyone by that name. I later learned that she had run out of options and had chosen to take online loans. The collection calls and threatening texts hounded her day and night until her life turned into a living nightmare. Nonetheless, none of that had anything to do with me anymore. After Damian lost his job, he returned to his hometown with a tail between his legs and never made a comeback. People there talked about him behind his back until he became the local clown. Sadly, his departure meant that Talia turned her leeching efforts to me. She would appear outside my house every few day

Damian lunged forward and grabbed my arm just as I turned to leave. I had thrown that ring with all my strength, so there was now a gash on his forehead, causing blood to stream down past his eyebrow. He didn't try to wipe it away. Instead, he just gripped my arm more tightly and yelled, "Elise, you can't leave! This is my wedding day. What am I supposed to do if you walk out on me? What man doesn't look at other women? Men used to have wives and mistresses all the time. "So, why is it a problem that I looked a little? Besides, you're fat and an orphan who has no family to support her! Who else is going to help once you have kids? Don't be so ungrateful!" He was nearly shouting like a lunatic toward the end, his face contorting in panic and rage. I laughed at his face. "Damian, be serious. Who's the one who has actually lost their marbles here? God, your shamelessness just knows no bounds, huh?" I yanked my arm free before immediately calling over one of the hotel staff a

Talia's grayish face flushed an ugly purple the second she heard my voice. When she realized I hadn't blown up the way she'd expected, her whole face twisted as she screeched, "Elise! What did you do to me? This isn't how it was supposed to happen!" Then, she lunged at me with her nails out, trying to claw at my face like some wild animal. I caught her wrist and pinned it back without much effort. She was so painfully thin now that she barely had any strength left, so fighting her off was easier than dealing with a child throwing a tantrum. I leaned in close and spoke quietly into her ear. "What did I do? Funny you should ask. You know exactly what you did. Nothing stolen stays with you forever. Sooner or later, it gets taken back." Her eyes flew open. "You know about the—" She cut herself off so fast it was almost funny. Then, she switched to a pitiful expression just as quickly. Her eyes filled with tears as she looked over at Damian, as if she were the victim in all

The carved wooden doors to the hall slowly opened, and a figure stumbled inside. A wave of shocked gasps rippled through the crowd. She barely looked human anymore. She was all skin and bones, wrapped in a bridesmaid dress that hung from her narrow frame. The bright red fabric, meant to show off her figure, now looked eerie on her. It was as if it had been thrown over a skeleton. She looked so fragile that it felt like a hard gust of wind would blow her away. Talia's fingernails dug into the wall as she dragged herself forward, her knuckles pale from the strain. She looked so weak that she seemed ready to collapse at any second. Every step she took looked and felt shaky. Her heels scraped across the floor with a harsh, grating sound. Everyone could see how her knees were trembling so badly that it looked like they might give out beneath her. The dress that was supposed to hug her curves now hung loose and empty on her body. Her cheeks had sunken in so deeply that they l

Talia tilted her head and smiled. "Don't you agree, Damian?" Damian had always been shallow. He'd barely given Talia a second glance in the past. Yet, the way he spoke to her softened now that she'd slimmed down and started looking prettier. "Exactly," he replied, giving her an approving once-over. "Any man would be proud to be seen with you, especially with a body like yours." Then, he turned to me, and all that warmth disappeared. "Look at yourself, Elise, and look at Talia. You're a woman, are you not? What happened to having some self-awareness? What's the point of living like this if you're going to let yourself get so fat?" His voice was sharp, each word more vicious than the last. "I'm warning you. You'd better start taking this seriously. Don't blame me if you can't fit into your wedding dress and end up embarrassing me at the wedding." Then, he added in an even colder tone, "You're not coming to the buffet tonight. I'm taking Talia instead. You can go after you
