The bedroom door opened, and Adelaide Knight strode in. She was still wearing the black-and-silver armor she'd had on yesterday, with several dark red bloodstains on one sleeve.

My blood.

She walked over and pressed a small paper bag into my hands.

"Here's your favorite candy. I went back to Miller's Sweets in Southridge and got you some more." Her voice was gentle, the same way she always coaxed me whenever I had to take bitter medicine.

I lowered my eyes to the bag of candy in my hands. It was still warm from her touch, the paper slightly crumpled.

"Why aren't you eating it?" She reached out and ruffled my hair affectionately.

"Fabian drank your blood, and he looks so much better today. The doctor said he just needs a few more days of rest before he'll be able to get out of bed and walk." Her eyes lit up as she spoke, relief and happiness shining in them.

I blinked slowly and looked up at her. "Adelaide."

She froze. I normally called her Addie in that foolish, childish way of mine.

"What is it?" Her gaze dropped to the thick bandages wrapped around my chest. Blood was still faintly seeping through them.

Her brows drew together, and a hint of reproach entered her voice. "How did you mess up your bandages again? The doctor told you not to move around too much for the next few days."

As she spoke, she naturally reached for my shirt, intending to straighten it for me.

I took a step back, avoiding her hand.

Her hand stopped in midair.

"Reed?" She looked confused.

I turned and walked toward the bed. A plain canvas duffel sat on top of it. I'd just finished packing.

Adelaide followed me over. When she saw the bag, she couldn't help laughing. "What is this, another one of your treasure hunts? You dragged out all this old junk again?"

She casually nudged aside the edge of the bag. Inside was a kite with a broken string, a worn little wooden figurine, and a few coins. They were all things she'd casually given me over the past five years. I'd treasured every one of them.

"I'm leaving." I looked at her as I said it.

The smile hadn't even faded from her face. She clearly thought I was talking nonsense. "Leaving? Where are you going?"

She pulled over a chair and sat down, watching me with amused patience as if I were a child throwing a tantrum. "You little fool. You can barely find your way out of this house. Where do you think you're going to go? Be good. Stop making a fuss."

She pointed at the candy in my hands. "Eat your candy and get some sleep. Fabian said he wants rotisserie chicken from that place across town tomorrow. I'll pick some up for you too while I'm there."

I said nothing.

Right in front of her, I slowly opened the bag of candy. Its rich, sugary scent filled the room.

I walked over to the fireplace and let go. The candy dropped into the flames with a hiss. Within seconds, it began to melt, the smell of burnt sugar overpowering its sweetness.

Adelaide shot to her feet. "Reed, what are you doing?"

She strode over and grabbed my wrist. Her grip was very tight, and the sudden movement pulled at the wound in my chest. Pain drained the color from my face.

"What's gotten into you lately? I waited in line for half an hour to get you that candy."

She was upset. In her mind, a decorated general like her had gone out of her way to stand in line and buy me candy, so I should have been grateful.

I looked into her angry eyes. "It's dirty."

"What?" She hadn't heard me.

"I said the candy is dirty."

She'd gone to take care of another man with my blood on her hands. Then she'd used those same hands to buy me candy. It disgusted me.

Adelaide's expression darkened. She released my wrist. "Reed, I've indulged you because I care about you. That doesn't mean you get to keep pushing your luck. If you're going to keep acting like this, I won't come see you for the next few days."

With that, she turned and strode out. The door slammed shut behind her.

I stood there, watching the last ember in the fireplace go dark.

That winter, a rare snowstorm swept across the Blackthorn Frontier. The mountains were buried beneath the snow, and not even a bird could be seen.Adelaide never left. She built a crude shelter outside the wooden fence and stayed there like a stray dog with nowhere else to go.Every day, she ventured into the forest in search of the rarest medicinal herbs she could find, then left them outside the gate.Uriah never spared them a glance. He simply took them and fed them to the poisonous creatures he kept. One morning in early spring, sunlight broke through the toxic haze between the trees and spilled across the cottage window.I rested against the bed, looking at the first hint of green outside. My body felt lighter than it ever had before."Uriah," I called softly.Uriah came over carrying a bowl of medicine, his eyes rimmed red. "Come on, kid. Time for your medicine."I shook my head. "It's too bitter. I don't want it anymore."I reached out and caught a leaf that drifted in

I didn't pull away. I let her filthy, bloodstained hands close tightly around mine."Adelaide." I looked at her, my voice quiet. "Do you remember what you said when you first brought me home?"Adelaide froze.Of course she remembered. It had been winter five years ago when she'd pulled me, barely alive, from a pile of corpses. She'd carried me back to her estate, pointed to the courtyard filled with camellias, and said, "Reed, this is your home now. As long as I'm here, no one will ever hurt you."Tears spilled from Adelaide's eyes again, landing hot against the back of my hand."I remember... I remember everything..." She cried like a helpless child."If you remember..." I slowly pulled my hand from hers. "Then why were you the one who ended up hurting me the most?"Adelaide shuddered as if she'd been plunged into ice.It was true.Who had allowed the servants to dig up his camellia tree?Who had taken the stone that kept the cold poison under control and given it to anothe

I looked at the bag of candy.Once, it had been the only sweetness in my life. For a single piece, I'd once been willing to give up my life.I leaned forward slightly and looked into her eyes."General Knight, I don't eat sweets. The smell alone makes me sick."Adelaide's face instantly went white. The hand holding the candy began to shake violently."Reed...""Get out!" An angry shout came from inside the cottage. An elderly man with snow-white hair and a beard stormed outside, gripping a heavy wooden pestle. It was my mentor, Uriah. He marched up to Adelaide and kicked her squarely in the chest.Already weakened by the toxins in the forest, Adelaide went flying backward and crashed into the mud, coughing up a mouthful of black blood."Uriah," I called to him softly, stopping him before he could strike her again.Uriah pointed at Adelaide, furious. "You monster. You actually have the nerve to come here?"Do you have any idea what blood taken from the heart means to someone

Her eyes were red. "No one is taking Reed's place!"She left all her military duties to her second-in-command and traveled to the Blackthorn Frontier alone, convinced I was still alive. After all, this was where I'd come from, and medicinal herbs that could suppress the toxins in my body grew here."Reed..."Adelaide braced herself on her sword and dropped to one knee in the mud, gasping for breath. Her vision was beginning to blur. The toxins in the air had already entered her bloodstream.Just as she was about to collapse, the faint scent of medicinal herbs drifted toward her. Her head snapped up.Not far away stood a small cottage enclosed by a wooden fence. In the yard, a young man in a pale shirt sat with his back to her in a wheelchair, spreading medicinal herbs out on trays to dry. That slender figure… that profile…Adelaide's heart clenched so violently it seemed to stop."Reed!"Somehow, she found the strength to stand. She stumbled through the fence and rushed towa

This time, Adelaide didn't search blindly. She stood in the middle of the room, slowly scanning every corner. An elegant wooden box sat on the table. It was the keepsake box she'd given me.She walked over and slowly opened it.Inside, neatly arranged, were all the things she'd given me over the past five years: a gold pendant, an onyx charm, a little wooden toy, even a few pretty stones I'd treasured as though they were priceless.Only one thing was missing—the old, bloodstained clothes I'd been wearing when she first found me.Adelaide's heart skipped a beat. A kind of panic she'd never felt before swept over her."Find him! Search the entire city if you have to!" Her roar echoed through the estate.Squads of armed soldiers poured through the gates carrying lanterns, lighting up the silent streets of the capital.Adelaide rode through the snowstorm herself.Over and over, her mind replayed the moment the dagger had pierced my chest. The blood pouring from the wound, the col

  • A Promise Too Far   Chapter 5

By the time Adelaide returned to the guest wing with the empty bowl, evening had already fallen.Fabian had drunk the blood and fallen into a deep sleep. The doctor said the poison was finally gone from his system.Adelaide was in such a good mood that she even went to the kitchen herself and brought back a bowl of soup."Reed, wake up. I brought you something to eat."She pushed open the door. The room was dark."Still asleep?"She set the bowl on the table and lit a lamp. The dim light pushed back the darkness to reveal that the bed was empty. The blankets had been neatly folded, without a trace of warmth left in them.Adelaide frowned. "Reed?"She checked the closet. Empty. She looked behind the room divider. Nothing."Where did that little fool hide this time?" she muttered under her breath.Whenever I'd upset her or gotten my feelings hurt in the past, I'd hide somewhere on the estate: in the hayloft, behind the garden shed, or tucked away in some corner of the kitchen
