Dahlia's POV

"Bad night's sleep?"

I jerked upright, my heart leaping into my throat.

Vincent was standing at the edge of the garden, his hands in his pockets, his expression carefully neutral. He was wearing a white button-down that was slightly wrinkled, like he hadn't bothered to change after the night before.

"What do you want?" I asked, my voice sharp.

He shrugged. "Just checking on my dear stepsister. You seemed upset at breakfast."

He stepped closer, and I instinctively pressed back against the stone bench. His eyes raked over me, taking in my red-rimmed eyes, my pale face, my trembling hands. And he smiled.

"Rough night?" he asked, his voice dripping with false sympathy. "Couldn't sleep? Kept seeing things you wished you hadn't?"

My face burned. "Stay away from me, Vincent."

"Why?" He took another step closer. "We're family now. Shouldn't we be close?"

"Don't pretend you care," I spat. "I saw you last night. With Miranda. You wanted me to see, didn't you?"

His smile widened. "Maybe. Maybe I wanted to remind you exactly what you are to me. A shadow. A nobody. Someone who watches from the darkness while I live my life."

The words hit like a slap. I felt tears prick at my eyes again, but I refused to let them fall.

"You're disgusting," I whispered.

"And you're pathetic," he said smoothly. "Pining after someone who doesn't want you. Drawing pictures of a man who'll never look at you twice."

I froze. "What are you talking about?"

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small leather-bound book. My sketchbook. The one I kept hidden under my mattress.

My blood ran cold.

"Where did you get that?" I demanded, lunging for it.

He stepped back easily, holding it above my reach. "Found it. Under your mattress. Really, Dahlia, you need to find a better hiding spot."

"Give it back!"

"Or what?" He flipped through the pages casually, his eyes scanning the drawings.

"Interesting. You've been watching me for years. Sophomore year. Junior year. Even last month." He held up a page. "This one's from the game against Westbrook. You were in the bleachers, weren't you?"

My face burned with humiliation. "Vincent, please—"

"Please what?" He closed the sketchbook and tucked it into his back pocket. "Please don't tell everyone that the perfect scholarship girl has been obsessed with her stepbrother?"

"I'm not obsessed—"

"Really?" He pulled out his phone and held it up. I saw a picture of one of my drawings. "'Vincent on the ice. The way the light hits his face when he scores. I wish he would look at me just once.'" He read the words slowly, savoring each one. "You wrote that, didn't you?"

I couldn't speak. I couldn't breathe.

"Don't worry," he said, stepping closer. "I'm not going to show anyone. Not yet." He reached out and tucked a strand of hair behind my ear, his touch feather-light and mocking. "I'm going to keep this. As insurance."

"Insurance for what?"

"For your silence." His smile was cold. "You saw something you shouldn't have in Dean Prescott's office. Now I have something on you too. We're even."

"You're blackmailing me?” I said, my voice cracking.

"I prefer to think of it as mutual assurance." He stepped back, his eyes glittering with malice. "You keep my secret, I keep yours. Simple."

I stared at him, my hands shaking. "What do you want from me?"

"Right now? Nothing." He shrugged. "Just know that I have this. And if you ever step out of line, if you ever tell anyone what you saw, I'll make sure everyone at Bellmont knows exactly what their precious valedictorian has been doing in her spare time."

He turned and walked away, leaving me standing alone in the garden.

I sank back onto the bench, my whole body trembling. The tears came then, hot and uncontrollable. I hated him. I hated him more than I'd ever hated anyone.

And now he had something on me. Something that could destroy my school life.

Oh God.

I walked out, entering into the house.

My mother was in the kitchen with Robert, discussing wedding plans with excited voices. The smell of coffee and fresh pastries filled the air. They were planning the guest list, discussing venues, debating flower arrangements… at least those were the parts I overheard.

I forced myself to smile when my mother looked my way.

"Are you feeling better, sweetheart?" she asked.

"Much better," I lied. "Just tired from all the moving."

Robert smiled warmly. "You'll get used to it. This is your home now. You should feel comfortable here."

I nodded, keeping my eyes fixed on my plate. I couldn't look at Vincent's empty seat. He'd already left for school, probably with Miranda draped over him in his expensive car.

"Have you met any of the other students at Bellmont?" Robert asked. "Vincent mentioned you're quite popular there."

I almost choked on my orange juice. "He did?"

"He mentioned you're at the top of your class. Very impressive." Robert beamed at my mother. "You've raised an exceptional daughter, Julia."

My mother glowed with pride. "She's always been brilliant. Even when she was little, she'd spend hours reading. Couldn't get her nose out of a book."

I forced another smile, my mind racing. Vincent had mentioned me? To his father? What game was he playing?

But it was really a relief that he had already left for school.

  • A Pucking Lesson in Forbidden    Chapter 82

Dahlia’s POVI stepped out of the car, the cool evening breeze catching the edge of my fitted black jumpsuit. My breath caught in my throat. The park was massive, an endless maze of dazzling yellow fairy lights, glowing archways, and a towering Ferris wheel that painted soft pastels onto the dark sky.Yet, the usual deafening roar of laughter, screeching children, and chaotic crowds was entirely absent. The silence was eerie, beautiful, and utterly surreal.I turned my head slowly, taking in the empty walkways, the unmanned game booths, the silent concession stands. He shut down an entire amusement park just for a casual night walk…A strange realization settled in my chest. Up until now, Alexander had felt like a distant, polite shadow—a polished boy playing political games. But seeing this, feeling the weight of effortless influence, made reality slam into me. He wasn't just a wealthy rival flirting with societal standing; he was on the exact same ruthless, untouchable tier as Vince

Dahlia’s POVThe soft knock on my bedroom door came just as I was slipping out of my robe."Dahlia?"My mother stepped into the room, leaning lightly on the frame before easing the door shut behind her. She moved slowly, her hand pressed flat against her side where the tight bandages bound her cracked ribs, but the exhausted look from the hospital had vanished."He's waiting," she said, her voice smooth, almost purring. She walked over to my walk-in closet, her eyes scanning the racks of designer clothes with practiced precision. "Alexander Black. I have to admit, Dahlia... I didn't think you had it in you to pull someone from that caliber of money."I reached into a drawer, my jaw tightening slightly.Pull someone…as if Alexander were a prize catch brought home from a hunt."We're just going for a walk, Mom," I said flatly, pulling a cute, slightly skimpy black jumpsuit off a hanger. "It's not a grand declaration.""Don't be naive, darling," she chided softly, pulling an emerald-gree

Dahlia’s POVThe sudden slam of the double doors sent a sharp jolt straight up my spine.I froze, my coffee cup hovering inches from my lips as footsteps echoed down the ruined foyer. My stepfather stormed into the dining room, his expensive suit rumpled, his face a dark canvas of pure, unadulterated fury.Right beside him was my mother, her hand clutched tightly over her wrapped ribs beneath her coat, her lips pressed into a thin line.An unbearable, suffocating awkwardness settled over the table instantly.I sat trapped between the two of them—Vincent sitting to my right, his bare chest bruised, his hands clumsily wrapped in bloody gauze while he aggressively chewed a pastry; and Alexander across from us, perfectly groomed, composed, and smelling of expensive cologne. My mother’s cold eyes swept over the shattered glass in the hall, taking in the absurd sight of us three sitting around a freshly set breakfast basket. Her gaze lingered on Vincent’s bandaged hands before finally landi

Vincent’s POVThe sky was white—a blinding, sun-bleached static that burned my eyes.I was standing on the back porch of the old beach house, the air thick with salt and the cold mist of the ocean. My mother was sitting on the wooden railing, her long dark hair whipping across her face in the wind. She was laughing, holding a worn copy of some book, turning to look at me with eyes that were soft and warm."Vincent," she called out, her voice floating over the crashing waves. "Come here, baby."I took a step toward her, reaching my hand out—and the ground gave way.The white sky turned pitch-black in a heartbeat. The soft ocean spray became heavy, suffocating water, pulling her off the ledge. Her laughter distorted into a jagged, terrified scream as dark water swallowed her whole.I threw myself over the railing, reaching for her fingers as she sank into the deep, but my hands only caught air. Blood bubbled up to the surface, staining the dark water, and her eyes stared back up at me t

  • A Pucking Lesson in Forbidden    Chapter 78

Dahlia’s POVThe white halls of the hospital smelled faintly of bleach and rubbing alcohol, a harsh contrast to the suffocating silence of the private waiting room.My stepfather was pacing the floor like a caged animal. His jacket was gone, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, and his face was twisted in a knot of pure rage. Every few seconds, he’d slam his fist against the armrest of a chair or run both hands through his hair, muttering curses under his breath."That's it," he snarled, his voice echoing off the clinical walls. "I'm done. I am fucking done covering for him. I'm pulling him out of the league, packing his bags, and sending him abroad. First flight to Europe. He can ruin his life somewhere else where my name isn't attached to it!"I sat on the edge of the small vinyl couch, my hands clutched tightly in my lap, saying nothing. The idea of Vincent being sent away—shoved across an ocean, scrubbed out of our lives—sent a strange spike through my chest. But I kept my express

Vincent’s POVI didn't go home. I couldn't.If I went back to that empty estate with her words looping in my head, I would have put my fist through a wall. Or worse."I'm going home with Alexander."It kept playing in my head. Over and over. She looked me in the eye, smiled and chose him. She let him put his hands on her. Let him take her away right in front of me. And left me standing in the dark like an idiot.I pulled into a club downtown. Threw the keys at the valet without looking. I walked straight to the VIP bar.Double shots of scotch. One after another until my throat stopped burning and just went numb. One bottle turned into two. The bass was shaking the floor. Neon lights flashing on strangers, but I didn't see any of them. All I saw was her. Her platinum hair. Her dark eyes. Her red lips. The lips that were supposed to be mine.By the time the bartender cut me off, the room was spinning. I was drunk. My legs felt like lead. I stumbled to my car and somehow made it back to
