Look The Part

Cassie trudged up the hill with her sisters, the massive packhouse looming before them. The three of them weren’t particularly tall, but they were strong. With thick auburn hair and hazel eyes. Their faces, arms and legs were largely covered in freckles. A gift from so many days spent out in the sun with the rest of the pack. The sun was fading now, as they walked through the main room and up the stairs to their families’ wing of the house. They shared a kind of suite, with three bedrooms branching off of a small sitting room. The large bathroom could accommodate all of them, but there always seemed to be a fight over its use.

The girls fell into a silent, methodical rhythm as they got ready for the party that evening. Moving effortlessly from one room to the other, swinging in and out of the bathroom, and examining the party dresses that their mother, the Luna, had sent up for them to wear.

They all had long, fitted silk gowns, with the fabric so keenly draped as to make them look effortless as they glided across the room. Nora’s was a lovely burgundy color, while Evelyn’s was a dark midnight blue, and Cassie’s a deep forest green. “Why aren’t you excited about tonight?” mused Nora, as she distracted herself with putting her hair up in an elegant twist. Sighing as she saw the trouble she was having, Evelyn walked over and took the task of finishing Nora’s hair before it became entirely unwieldy. “I’m just too skeptical to think that there’s any way for this event to just magically transform into some, ‘happily ever after’ situation for the three of us. There’s too much riding on it, on us. Far too much pressure for a ridiculous party.” Nora frowned, the troubled look maring her otherwise lovely visage. Large eyes speckled with green and brown, narrowed towards her strong freckled nose, just over a full mouth, that was now twisted to the side with frustration and judgment. “It’s not ridiculous. Don’t you want to meet somebody new? Even if it’s not your mate, I’m so over seeing the same boys every single day. Sure, they’re technically men now, but we’ve known them literally our entire lives! It’s hard to see them as a real partner, when you’ve also seen how inane and immature they can be.”

Cassie gave her sisters a sly smile, “Did you see how disappointed Randolph was when we turned 18 and none of us were their mates?” Evelyn snorted  and Nora agreed grimly. “This is what I mean, thank the moon goddess that none of us were fated to their miserable asses. I’m not yearning to leave our pack, just to leave the same people and the same situations that we deal with every single day.”

“Same sisters, even?” Asked Evelyn, cocking her head to the side and fixing Nora with an appraising look. “Never!” gasped Norah. “Please, regardless of how daft you are, sometimes the two of you are the only thing keeping me sane in this place!”

“I’ll show you daft,” cackled Evelyn, as a pillow sailed out of her hand and smacked Nora right in the face.
