Elena has always been an outcast. Born with a hole in her heart, blamed for her mother’s death during childbirth, rejected by her father, and treated as a servant in her own home, she grew up lonely and unloved. With a weak heart that leaves her fragile, she had never felt like she belonged. Until the night everything changed. At the Full Moon Festival, everyone is shocked when the mate bond ties the smoking hot and ruthless immortal Lycan King; Lycan Nikolai, to Elena. For centuries, Nikolai has searched for his destined Luna—a reincarnation of the powerful woman he once loved but lost tragically. Realizing that Elena is weak and sick, he rejects her without a second thought. Elena’s stepsister, Sophie, gladly takes her place as Nikolai’s Luna, unaware that fate has other plans. A tragic accident that plunges Sophia into a state of coma forces Elena into the role she never wanted. She becomes a substitute bride to a king who sees her as worthless and a total waste of time. Thrown into a ruthless world of elite wolves, betrayal, and secrets, Elena is determined to survive. As she uncovers her own hidden strength, she begins to form an undeniable bond with Nikolai. But Sophie won’t let go so easily, and the shadows of Nikolai’s past threaten to destroy everything. Secrets unravel, prophecies are revealed, and enemies rise from the shadows. Will Nikolai see past her weakness to the powerful woman she truly is, or will the ghosts of their pasts and present temptations destroy them both?

“I, Lycan Nikolai Duskborn, Lycan King of the Duskborn werewolf realm, reject you, Elena Rivers, as my mate…”
Even though the words didn’t come exactly to me as a shock, I wouldn’t deny the way the sting of rejection hit me like a punch to the gut.
The crowd around us gasped and I could hear some people snickering delightfully behind me.
“Rejected. I knew it.” An unidentified girl whispered.
“She really thought she would be Luna? A pathetic sick girl like her?” Another woman sneered.
I swallowed hard, forcing myself to stand tall, despite the heat of embarrassment creeping up my neck. But truth be told, I didn’t feel all that bad. Sure, I was the center of mockery once again, but deep down, I felt relieved.
I could never imagine myself bound to a man like Lycan Nikolai. He was too cold, ruthless, and had lived thousands of years as an immortal. I wasn’t the first girl he had been mated to. Matter of fact, he had been mated to many women before me, but because they were mortal, he would reject them when they started to get older and mate with someone younger again. This time, it was me whom the moon goddess had chosen for him.
“Elena!” I heard my stepmother, Valeria’s voice behind me. She walked to stand beside me and immediately bowed her head before Lycan Nikolai before straightening her posture again. “My king, if I may?”
Nikolai turned his cold, amber eyes toward her. He didn’t look like he was interested in whatever she was about to say, but she continued anyway.
“While the rejection of a mate is final, there is a custom that I would like to remind you of.” She said and Lycan Nikolai raised a brow at her. Even though he was thousands of years old, he looked nothing like his age. He looked hot and sexy, like he was in his late twenties or early thirties. In fact, he had to be the hottest man I had ever set eyes on.
“What custom?” Lycan Nikolai asked and she immediately answered with a sly smile.
“Well, My King, it is customary that a rejected mate’s blood relative may take her place.” She placed a hand on Sophie’s shoulder, pushing her forward like a prized trophy. Sophie was my step sister. “In this case, Elena’s sister would be the perfect match.”
I blinked in disbelief and averted my gaze to the both of them. I couldn’t believe they would be so shameless to jump at an opportunity like two desperate opportunists.
Beside Valerie, Sophie looked radiant. Her perfect, porcelain skin was glowing and a fake innocence plastered across her face.
I felt my heart swell with rage as my mind traveled back to last night when I had caught her in bed with my boyfriend, Jake. She had laughed to my face and told me I shouldn’t be selfish as I was a sick girl who would die anytime soon.
And now, she was about to step in my place and become the Lycan King’s mate? How much lower could she stoop?
My father, who was standing behind us nodded his head eagerly in agreement.
“Yes, My King. Sophie is everything Elena isn’t. She is strong and capable of being the perfect Luna for you. She would make a wonderful choice for you, My King.”
For a moment, Nikolai stared at them, his expression unreadable. He glanced at Sophie as if considering her carefully, before his gaze flicked back to me. A scorn crossed his face before he looked back to Sophie again.
Oh, yeah. Just like everyone else, he thought I wasn’t worth anything.
In my heart, I prayed fervently that he would dismiss my father and step mother and choose instead, to mate with another girl. Sophie shouldn’t win this. I would be screwed if she did.
But the gods had other plans.
The wolf priestess, Anya, leaned in and whispered something into Lycan Nikolai’s ear. When she pulled away again, he continued to stare at us with that blank, expressionless face of his.
“Fine.” He spoke with a tone of finality. “Sophie will take her place. The rites will be performed tomorrow night.”
My heart fell in disappointment and beside me, Sophie beamed, her smile sickeningly sweet. Her eyes then shifted and locked onto mine with nothing short of triumph. I rolled my eyes and looked away again.
Valerie gave me a quick, victorious look before turning back to Nikolai and bowing before him.
“Thank you, My King.”
As the rest of the full moon festival continued, I stood by a corner, watching the party and avoiding judgemental eyes. Out of habit, I adjusted the beanie on my head.
Then, I noticed Valerie and Sophie cat-walking towards me with victorious smirks on their faces.
“Sulking, are we?” Valerie asked me as they reached me.
“And why should I be?” I pasted a fake smile on my face as I stood straighter.
“Because as always, I was picked instead of you, dearest sister.” Sophie batted her lashes at me and gave me a sweet smile. “It was foolish to think you’d ever be Luna. I am always the better choice.”
“Better choice?” I laughed a low, sarcastic laugh. “Is that why you force yourself on everyone you meet? Is that why you like to take away everything that rightfully belongs to me? My boyfriend for example? Don’t forget I caught you naked and having sex with him on my own bed…”
Before I could complete my sentence, Valerie’s hand landed on my face, sending me a sharp slap that echoed across the hall.
Almost everyone was staring at us now, some of them pulling out their phones to take videos and pictures as they tried to suppress their laughter. My face burned in embarrassment.
“You’d better mind your tongue and remember your place.” Valerie hissed at me as her eyes narrowed and her lips curled in disdain. “Sophie is better than you in every way. No one would want a cursed and evil child like you.”
Then, in the flash of a second, she grabbed the beanie on my head and snatched it away, exposing the white smooth waves of my hair that cascaded freely down my back now.
I heard a few gasps of shock at this.
“See? I told you she was cursed!” A girl’s excited voice came, followed by another.
“She really is cursed. She's bad luck.”
My eyes watered as I watched Valerie and Sophie stare at me with twisted, satisfied smiles on their faces.
“See?” Valerie said. “There’s the evidence. You are worth nothing. So, don’t you ever think you’re better than Valerie in any way. You are not and can never be.”
I stared back at her, trying my best not to let my tears fall as my hands trembled at my sides. I wanted to lash out, but I swallowed my rage and did nothing. If I as much as tried to defend myself, they would add to the hell that I was already living at home.
“You know the way home, Elena. Your father would drive Sophie and I home.” Valerie said, pushing a couple of bags into my chest with unnecessary force. I caught them before they could fall.
“Goodbye, sister. Don’t worry. I’ll consider hiring you as my personal handmaiden after I become Luna.” Sophie chuckled and followed Valerie and my father as they walked out of the hall.
Sniffing back tears from falling, I did not hesitate to hurry out of the hall shortly after. As I walked down the street home, I shivered as the cool night air hit my skin. I pushed the beanie further down over my white hair, as if it could hide the mark that branded me. I had never fitted in. I had never been good enough.
My life has always been a sad, pathetic story. I was born with unusual white hair and a hole in my heart. And to make matters worse, my mother had died while giving birth to me. Because of this, everyone tagged me as an evil and cursed child. I think my father’s hatred for me had started from that moment too.
A few months later, my father had brought his mistress; Valerie, and his second daughter; Sophie, who was my age, to the house and I had became a slave and an outsider in my father’s house from an early age. Even in the pack.
Unlike Sophie who was treated like a princess, enrolled in the Duskborn Elite Academy, and given the finest of things, I was treated the exact opposite. I was made to sleep in the basement and I never had new clothes, neither did I have any friends.
Well, I had one. My boyfriend. Ex-boyfriend now, after he had broken my heart when I had caught him cheating on me with Sophie.
And now, I had just been coldly rejected by the Lycan King. Even though I had seen it coming, it was proof that I wasn’t even on the good side of the moon goddess. I had already concluded that the only reason she had given me life was so that she could enjoy watching me suffer.
When I finally reached home, I was surprised that Valerie, my father and Sophie weren’t here yet. They had taken the car, so why were they late? Maybe they had made a stop somewhere.
Just as I began to drop the bags in my arms, the phone in the living room rang and I hurried over to pick it up.
“Hello?”
“Hello. Is this Elena Rivers?” A professional female voice asked and I nodded as if she could see me.
“Yes. How may I help you?”
“This is Duskborn’s General Hospital.” The voice said. “Your family has been involved in a car accident. You need to come to the hospital immediately.”
[ Elena ]The Moon Mating Gala was just two days away, and the entire pack was buzzing with preparations. The academy had gone on a short break, giving everyone time to get ready. Young girls were beginning to fill the streets, shopping for dresses and accessories, hoping to shine their best at the grand event.I had never attended the Moon Mating Gala before. It was reserved for the elite girls of the pack —the daughters of high-ranking wolves, or at the very least, the most beautiful ones. The gala was a tradition where newly mated wolves, chosen during the last full moon festival, had their first official dance. They would present themselves before the Lycan King and Queen, along with other honored guests. And yet, here I was —not just attending, but standing as the Lycan Queen. Me. The girl who had never been considered worthy of an invitation. Funny how life could change so quickly… even if my position was only temporary.I had promised myself I would enjoy this moment and not l
Elena As Nikolai and I stepped into the throne room, I never expected the ‘important guests’ he mentioned to be Valerie and my father. But what shocked me even more was the state they were in. They were kneeling on the floor, hands bound, their clothes disheveled as if they had been roughly handled. Two guards stood behind them with stone cold expressions on their faces. I frowned in confusion. What had happened? What offence had they committed?“Sit.” Nikolai said as we reached the thrones.I hesitated, glancing down at the joggers and oversized top I was wearing. If I had known we were coming here, I would have changed into something more appropriate. It felt wrong to sit on the throne dressed like this.“Sit,” he repeated, his gaze locked onto mine.Forcing a small, thin-lipped smile, I obeyed, lowering myself onto my throne while he settled into his own beside me.From where she was kneeling, Valerie shot me a hateful glare. I still wondered what all of this was about.“Elena,”
ElenaWhen I woke up the next morning, I didn’t expect to find myself in Nikolai’s chamber. My eyes blinked against the soft morning light as I took in the familiar walls, confusion settling deep in my chest.Frowning, I slowly sat up. The pain from last night was still there, but it wasn’t as sharp. It was dull now, a lingering ache rather than the unbearable torment it had been. How did I get here?I tried to piece together everything that had happened. Nikolai had ordered his guards to throw me in the cell. Francesca had tormented me. Pain and thirst had drained the last of my strength. And then darkness. But now, I was here.In the room of the same Lycan King who had locked me up.Did he find me unconscious and bring me here? Why? And if he wanted to help, why not send me to the healing wing instead of his personal chamber?A soft groan left my lips as I ran a hand through my hair. My fingers brushed against something unfamiliar, and it was only then that I realized… that wasn’t w
NikolaiA bright ray of sunlight hit my eyes, pulling me from unconsciousness. Blinking against the harsh light, I raised a hand to shield my face and slowly pushed myself up from the grass beneath me.My heart clenched as my eyes scanned my surroundings.I was here again. Back in this place. This nightmare I knew too well. A memory that had haunted me all my life. A past I could never escape.“Get up already! Don’t be a lazy ass!”A familiar voice rang through the air, softening the ache in my chest even as it deepened the wound.I turned toward the sound. The sunlight faded just enough for me to see ‘her’ riding toward me on a horse, her golden hair flowing like silk in the wind. She was breathtaking. Effortless grace and strength in every movement. And that warm, teasing smile... it always left me powerless. As she neared, I quickly rolled out of the way to avoid being trampled, then got to my feet. She laughed, a sound like music, as she slid off the horse and ran toward me.Befo
[Nikolai] “Elena!”I ran to her slumped, unconscious body, my heart pounding harder than ever before. Panic seized me as I dropped to my knees, pulling her limp form into my arms. Her face was pale, too pale, and my chest tightened painfully. My breaths came in short, sharp bursts as fear gripped me.“Guards!” I roared, my voice echoing through the walls.Within seconds, they rushed in, bowing their heads before me. My glare was sharp and my jaw clenched in rage.“What the fuck happened to her?” I demanded through gritted teeth. The guards exchanged nervous glances, their eyes darting between me and Elena. Beads of sweat formed on their foreheads, and they looked like they could piss themselves at any moment.“M-My king…” they stuttered in unison before one of them finally spoke up.“We have no idea, my king.” Their heads remained bowed, fear evident in their trembling voices.I wanted to tear them apart, to snap their useless necks for failing to protect her. But right now, Elena wa
[Elena] The guards did not lay a hand on me, but the cell itself did. It was a wretched place —damp and suffocating with the air thick with the stench of decay and something long forgotten. A single, pathetic window sat high above, barely allowing a sliver of light to seep through, casting eerie shadows against the cold, stone walls. With a deep sigh, I leaned back against the cold, rough wall and slid to the floor. My face was streaked with dried tears, but I wasn’t angry at Nikolai for locking me up. If anything, I was surprised this was all he had done. Knowing him, I had expected far worse. Nikolai didn’t take betrayal lightly, and stealing from him—even for a good reason—was still a betrayal. I stayed in that cell until nightfall, my body growing weaker with every passing hour. My throat burned with dryness, and my stomach twisted in hunger. I had eaten nothing all day. I had left the packhouse without breakfast, spent hours with evil Valerie, and then ended up here, aban
[Elena]By the time I reached the packhouse, Tamara was already waiting at the entrance, pacing anxiously. The moment she saw me, she rushed forward, grabbing my hand in a firm grip.“My Luna, where have you been? The Lycan King has been searching for you everywhere,” she said, her wide eyes filled with worry. If someone didn’t know better, they would think we had been close for years. “He even sent for you at school, but you weren’t there.”“He sent for me at school?” I repeated, feeling my stomach drop. A sudden wave of unease washed over me —not because he wanted to see me, but because he had expected me to be somewhere I wasn’t.Or maybe I should be more concerned about the fact that he had gone to such lengths to find me. That meant whatever he needed me for was serious.I pulled my hand free from Tamara’s grasp, forcing myself to remain calm as I met her worried gaze.“Do you know why he’s looking for me?”She shook her head, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.“Was he angry?
[ Elena ]The next morning, after being dropped off at school, I didn’t go inside.Instead, I slipped into a corner, pulled a hoodie over my head to hide my identity, and hailed a cab. As I climbed in, I clutched my backpack tightly against my stomach, nerves twisting inside me as the car pulled away from the curb.I couldn’t believe I was skipping school for this. But this was important. As the cab rolled to a stop in front of my father’s house, I hesitated. The driver glanced at me through the rearview mirror and I handed him the fare. He drove off, leaving me alone in front of the place I once called home.I stared at the house, my backpack still clutched close and my heart pounding against my ribs.Memories flooded my mind —painful, suffocating memories. The way they had made my life a living hell. How they had turned me into a slave in my own home. And even now, after I had escaped their clutches, they still wouldn’t leave me alone.I swallowed the lump in my throat and took a de
[ Elena ]As soon as the lunch bell rang, I bolted after Ronan and Celeste, weaving through the crowded hallway and nearly knocking into other students. I mumbled apologies as they cussed after me.I caught up with Ronan and Celeste just as they were about to enter the café with their friends.“Hey! Wait… can we talk?” I grabbed Celeste’s wrist with pleading eyes. She let out a bored sigh, then glanced at Ronan and the others. “You guys go ahead. I’ll be there soon.”Once they left, she yanked her wrist free —not too roughly, but enough to make her point. Folding her arms over her chest, she fixed me with a cold, piercing stare.“What do you want, traitor?”I flinched inwardly. I knew that was what they were going to think of me now.“I’m sorry.” I said, licking my lips as I struggled to find the right words. The speech I had rehearsed in my head was suddenly gone. I felt exposed and vulnerable. “It’s not what it looked like.”“Oh, really?” Celeste arched a brow. There was disbelief
