I jerked awake, gasping for air, my eyes blinking open to the hospital room.

A stranger sat beside my bed, watching me with worried eyes. He had sharp, sculpted features. His sun-weathered skin gave him a rugged handsomeness with just a hint of something exotic.

"W-who are you?"

My lips were dry, the words barely scraping out.

He introduced himself as Spencer Newell, a college graduate working as a village official in a nearby settlement.

When he heard about the landslide, he'd gathered a few villagers to look for survivors, and I was the one he pulled from the wreckage himself. Seeing that I was hurt and bleeding, he carried me to the town hospital for emergency treatment.

The doctors said I had a concussion and some lung damage from broken ribs, but thanks to how quickly I got help, the injuries weren't as bad as they could've been.

Spencer helped me sit up as he spoke and handed me a glass of water. I was just about to thank him when the door burst open.
