"We've lost all contact with the researchers at the experimental site. If we rush in now, we'll just end up interfering with the rescue team!"

Last night's storm caused a landslide at the experimental site below the research institute. Still, at this morning's meeting, Leonard Jacoby insisted on transferring me to guard the experimental field.

His tone left no room for debate. "This experiment represents ten years of the institute's work. We're on the verge of a breakthrough. We need someone to secure the site."

I saw right through his excuse. The real reason? His true love, Selene Latham, was among the victims this time. He feared for her safety and wanted to bring her back.

Leonard and I had been together for eight years. And now, after all this time, I was holding their wedding invitation.

My mind went totally blank. It felt like something inside me just shattered. It had been over ten years since they'd broken up, so how was this possible?

A coworker pulled me aside two days ago and whispered that she'd seen Leonard working on some kind of proposal. She told me to play dumb.

My heart skipped a beat when I realized he hadn't said a word to me about it. Finally, I thought. He was actually planning a surprise for once.

But now, every single wedding invitation bore Leonard's and Selene's names. They'd sent them to everyone, every department, without exception.

I'd been completely blindsided. Not just once, but twice in the same damn day. What a fool I'd been.

I searched everywhere for Leonard, determined to get answers. After questioning a few coworkers, I found myself outside the sealed-off breakroom.

"Don't worry about her. She's tougher than you. It's just some agricultural support program, not a death sentence."

My hand hung frozen in midair, shaking slightly.

Selene and I were the institute's best agricultural researchers. Six months ago, the company sent her to the rural area to help with the agricultural support program, where she worked in the experimental field.

But now, with disaster looming, Leonard was trying to swap me out to get her back.

I stood outside the door, the world tilting around me as my thoughts twisted into knots.

I didn't storm into the breakroom to demand explanations. I barely even noticed my coworkers' curious stares. Moving on autopilot, I left the office and dragged myself home.

I was barely paying attention when I unlocked my phone, but the news alert grabbed me immediately. "Researcher's Boyfriend Leads Rescue Effort After Landslide at Experimental Field."

I tapped the link before I could stop myself. The page loaded, and there was Leonard, leading the rescue team.

Without tools, he clawed at the fallen rocks with his bare hands. He had no idea how long he'd been digging when blood started dripping from his arms, staining the dirt. His eyes were filled with despair.

After he pulled Selene from the wreckage, they clung to each other, smiling with tears of relief. Battered by disaster, covered in dirt and blood, they still burned with happiness so fierce it almost hurt to see.

The comments section was overflowing with envy. Everyone was practically glowing from the romance in the air.

"I'm tearing up over here! This is probably love at its finest!"

"Nothing reveals true character like a disaster. You see who people really are when everything falls apart!"

"Surviving hell makes you appreciate what really matters. I hope they stay happy together forever!"

The moment I walked into the research institute on my birthday, I saw Leonard standing next to an extravagant arrangement of 999 roses. He got down on one knee."Mae, I was an idiot back then, and I get that you're still upset with me. You've refused every gift I've tried to give you lately, and I know I must've gotten them all wrong. But I remember how much you love flowers."Roses would always make you smile eight years ago. Now, all I want is to make you the happiest woman alive. I'll give you every kind of romance you've ever dreamed of. I love you, Mae. Will you marry me?"Our coworkers from the research institute stood nearby, cheering."Mr. Jacoby's got everything—young, successful, romantic, and loaded. I'm so jealous! Mabel, just say yes!""Who knew we had such a devoted guy here? Eight years together? You two have to get married now!""Marry him! Marry him! Marry him!"I stared at Leonard, at all of them, completely detached from the celebration. This should've been th

Selene's face went pale as she finished reviewing the evidence. After a moment of silence, Mr. Hudson turned to me, his expression softening just a little. "Mabel, it seems we were wrong about you. The lab just confirmed your findings—the pollen was defective. Do you have anything to say for yourself, Ms. Latham?"Panic flickered across Selene's face as she stammered, "Mr. Hudson, t-this was an accident! I'd never sabotage the enhanced pollen! No… Someone is framing me! Mr. Jacoby, you have to back me up!"She turned to Leonard, tears brimming as she clung to his sleeve.Leonard yanked his hand away from her, his face twisted in irritation. "'An accident'? After everything the institute has worked for all this time, do you think calling it an 'accident' fixes anything?"Do you have any idea how much damage you've caused? Ten of you wouldn't be enough to clean up this mess!"Selene's face twisted with rage. She jabbed a finger at me, her eyes burning. "This wasn't me! Mabel's behi

After that, Leonard never came to see me again. I settled back into my quiet country life, working the field and diving into my research.Every so often, I'd catch Selene's Instagram posts flaunting her glamorous city adventures with Leonard. But me? I found a peace I hadn't known in years.Spencer and I would roam the field during our free time, picking wild greens and berries. There was something simple and fun about it.After a month, I couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't right.I'd been keeping an eye on the hybrid wheat grown with enhanced pollen, but the newest batch came out with small, shriveled kernels. This wasn't how it was supposed to go. I'd written the research report myself, but the experiment was defying all of them. I carefully went through my work logs and data records, but everything seemed correct.Still, I sent the latest wheat field findings over to the research institute, along with my assessment that the experimental hybrid had failed. When t

Leonard said, "Don't worry about losing the bracelet. We can always get a new one. Honestly, I've never really gotten you anything nice before, so next time, just say the word, and I'll get it for you."He pulled his hand back, nervously brushing against the edge of his pants."I can't stand things other people have touched," I said. Our eyes locked, and the pain in his was impossible to miss. His eyes grew red. Then, someone shouted my name from the field's entrance before he could find the words to make me stay.I turned to see Spencer running toward us.Leonard frowned. "You? What are you doing here?"The second Spencer noticed Leonard standing beside me, his face twisted in disgust as he spoke to me. "What's your clingy ex doing back in your life?"I shrugged, helpless, as Spencer shoved Leonard aside and wedged himself next to me, raising an umbrella to shade me from the sun.Leonard's voice was a sharp hiss between clenched teeth. "Say that again, I fucking dare you!"Th

Rebuilding after the disaster took time. Every day, I stuck to the same routine, carefully keeping records while watering and fertilizing when needed. I started at dawn and worked until dusk.Life had grown quieter without emotional drama or academic competition. Staying busy slowly eased the weight of my regrets and grief. For the first time in a long while, my heart felt peaceful.Spencer dropped by often to help out and chat. The young wheat shoots swayed gently in the experimental field, full of life and potential.I was surprised to learn the research institute had used my stolen academic research for their experiments. The leadership was banking heavily on this project's success.Selene had been named head of the research team, and she and Leonard personally oversaw the delivery of the enhanced pollen for hybridization. Her face lit up with a smug grin the second we met. "Thanks for filling in for me on this agricultural support program, Mabel. I wouldn't have landed this pr

Leonard was sitting by my bed when I woke up again. He grabbed my hand, his face lighting up with relief. "Mae, you're finally awake! I was wrong about everything. I'll never argue with you again. Let's fix this!"I frowned and tugged my hand free. "Enough, Leonard! I already told you. It's over.""It's all my fault. Please forgive me."I didn't feel like talking, so I shook my head firmly. He ignored me and held up a bag. "Mae, look. I got you that creamy chicken potato soup you love."I sighed under my breath. "Leonard, I hate that more than anything."He never remembered a thing about me. But when Selene asked for a promotion, he did everything he could to make it happen. It never even crossed his mind that it cost me months of sleep, or that the research meant just as much to me.Maybe he just never cared."I'm sorry, Mae. I should have done better," Leonard said quietly. However, I was past caring. After everything we'd been through, whether he loved me or not didn't ev
