ESSENCE

By the time I pulled up in front of my parents' house, the bottle of wine I had stopped by a winery and bought, felt more like a bribe than a gift. My hands tightened on the steering wheel as I stared at the gate, wondering for a moment if I should just turn around and say I got caught in traffic. But no, I had to get this over with.

I rang the bell and waited. The moment the door opened and I stepped inside, I froze. My father was smiling at me. Smiling. As if we’d had Sunday brunches every week for the last ten years.

"You finally made it," he said, reaching out to take the wine from me like it was some sacred offering.

I blinked. Twice.

Then my mother appeared beside him, practically glowing. "Look at you, Essence. You’ve gotten so beautiful."

Okay, now I knew I was being punked. But the pièce de résistance was Yvonne. The same Yvonne who used to toss my clothes out of the closet and call me dead weight. Now she was hugging me like we had matching bracelets from

  • A Whole New World   CHAPTER SIXTY

ALEX I stood in the middle of the living room, jaw clenched, trying to ignore the ache in my temples. Vesper had just rolled her freshly manicured eyes and dropped her declaration like it was the most logical thing in the world: "Get a maid or let Remi cook. I have a date." I stared at her. "Really? That's what you think the solution is?" She scoffed, waving a hand dramatically. "Do you know how long it took to get these nails done? I can’t ruin them in a kitchen over burnt rice." "Essence did it all," I said quietly. "She cooked, she cleaned, she washed our clothes... even yours sometimes. And I never once heard her complain." Vesper's head snapped in my direction. "You mean the same Essence you insulted daily? The one you cheated on and humiliated until she signed those divorce papers you were so eager to hand her? That Essence? Don’t be delusional, Alex. You wanted to get rid of her. Now that she’s gone, don’t act like she was some saint you lost." Her words sliced de

  • A Whole New World   CHAPTER FIFTY NINE

ALEX I was pacing again. For what had to be the hundredth time this morning, I made another slow pass across the small space inside the pediatric ward. My feet moved automatically, but my mind was caught somewhere else entirely. I kept seeing her. Essence. The flash of her palm connecting with my cheek. The glint in her eyes when she looked at me with all that rage and no love left. And then...then the image that burned the deepest.... her walking away with him. Lucian. At first, I hadn’t connected the dots. I hadn’t known who the hell he was. I thought he was just someone Essence was using to make me jealous and then return home once the theatrics were over. But I had been wrong. He wasn’t just someone. Lucian Knight. The Lucian Knight. The billionaire CEO, media darling, and apparently, my ex-wife’s new husband. It sounded like a joke. A cruel, twisted prank designed to mock me. But the news, the interviews, the photos... they all screamed the same truth. She w

  • A Whole New World   CHAPTER FIFTY-EIGHT

ESSENCE The reporters swarmed us, their voices overlapping with rapid-fire questions about our relationship, the marriage, the party last night, and everything else in between. I froze. For a second, I actually stopped breathing. Lucian, on the other hand, was completely at ease. He leaned in and whispered, "Let’s not hide from the media. I’ve always controlled what they post about me. This time won’t be any different." I didn’t even get the chance to ask more questions before he stepped forward, confidently putting his arm around my waist like we were royalty walking a red carpet. “Essence is my wife," he said to the sea of microphones, "and I love her more than life itself." There were gasps, a collective rush of excitement, and more camera flashes. My breath caught in my throat. I turned to look at him, and he gave me that soft, heart-melting smile that made my knees feel like jelly. And then he added, "I absolutely cannot live without her." I stared at him, stunned.

  • A Whole New World   CHAPTER FIFTY SIX

ESSENCE Waking up beside Lucian once again felt like waking up in a dream I didn’t want to end. The light from the morning sun peeked through the blinds, casting soft stripes across his chest. He was still asleep, and for a moment, I just stared—at his lashes, at the shape of his lips, at the calmness that always seemed to rest on his face when he wasn’t trying to be intimidating or playful or sarcastic. He looked peaceful. Like he belonged in this bed. With me. I shifted slightly and felt the cool brush of air against my skin. That’s when I realized the blanket had slipped off me and... oh my God. I was still half-naked. I froze, then blinked at myself. My night dress was long gone, my underwear was nowhere in sight, and the only thing saving my modesty was the thin sheet barely clinging to my hip. And I wasn't even ashamed. I was blushing, yes—mortified by the memory of how I writhed under Lucian’s mouth like a woman possessed—but mostly, I was giddy. Still riding the wave

  • A Whole New World   CHAPTER FIFTY FIVE

HAILEY I had just stepped into the house when my phone rang. One glance at the caller ID, and I already knew who it was. I answered anyway, listened in silence, and rolled my eyes. “I’m not going,” I muttered before ending the call. But as I sat down and stared at the time, my heart wouldn’t stop racing. My body felt restless, like something inside me had already made the decision I was trying to fight. Minutes later, I found myself rushing into the shower. I didn’t think—just moved. I got dressed, grabbed my keys, and drove straight to the address downtown. I didn’t even question what I was doing. When I got there, I hesitated only for a second before knocking on the door. It opened almost immediately. Zion stood there, hot and intimidating as always. His eyes met mine, then dropped to check the time. “You’re ten minutes late,” he said coldly. “I was busy,” I replied, keeping my voice even. Without warning, he stepped forward and pinned me to the wall. His breath br

  • A Whole New World   CHAPTER FIFTY FOUR

SKY I was tired. Exhausted, really. All I wanted when I got home was to take off my bra, have a bath, a glass of wine, and not hear another human voice for twelve hours straight. So, you can imagine my shock when I unlocked my front door, pushed it open… and got shoved from behind like I was in some crime thriller. I stumbled forward, barely catching myself against the wall. “What the hell...?” Before I could even turn fully around, I already knew who it was. I didn’t need to see his face to recognize the heavy, possessive energy flooding my space like he owned it. “Jack,” I hissed, whipping around. “What do you think you’re....” “I had to see you,” he said, eyes dark and intense. “You’ve been ignoring my calls.” He looked exactly the same as he did that night at the bar—tall, confident, and just the right amount of dangerous. “That’s because I didn’t want to talk to you,” I said, slamming the door shut behind him before the neighbors caught wind of this madness. “S

  • A Whole New World   CHAPTER FIFTY-THREE

ESSENCE I crossed my arms. "I guess you haven't seen how bad my stretch marks are." And then, before I could second-guess myself, I stood up and let my nightdress fall to the floor, leaving me in nothing but my bra top and white panties. "There. Go on. See for yourself," I challenged, gesturing toward the soft folds of my belly. "This is me, Lucian. I'm not sexy. I'm not one of those beautiful models you see everyday. I'm just me." Lucian didn’t move at first. But then he stood up slowly and walked toward me, his gaze never leaving mine. He placed his arms around me and held me tight against his chest. His warmth. His breath. It made my heart skip. "Essence," he said, his voice gentle but firm, "we all have scars. On our bodies, in our hearts. Yours don’t make you less. They make you real. They make you you. And that 'you' is very special to me." I swallowed hard, blinking back the sting of tears. I bent to pick up my nightdress, suddenly unsure of myself. But before I could

  • A Whole New World   CHAPTER FIFTY-TWO

ESSENCE I barely had time to breathe before the cameras descended on us. The moment we stepped back into the hall, a flurry of movement closed in around us. Flashbulbs popped. Reporters surrounded us like bees, their questions coming faster than my brain could process. "Mr. Knight, is this your new woman?" "Is she just your date?" "Can we get a statement about your relationship?" Lucian didn’t flinch. In fact, he seemed to have been waiting for this moment. He slid his arm around my waist, pulled me just a little closer to him and said, in that smooth, velvet voice of his that could probably make a stone blush, “Essence is my wife. The love of my life.” My jaw almost unhinged. The love of his life? Was this some kind of PR strategy? Was he... serious? Before I could even begin to think about how to react, my eyes caught something—or rather, someone—standing in the corner of the room, leaning against a high table like she owned the whole damn party. Brittany. Ther
