It had been five days since the surgery. The doctors said she was strong enough to go home. Strong enough. Isaac had wanted to laugh at that. There was nothing left in her that looked strong.

The car was silent. The sound of the tires on the road was the only thing that filled the space between them. Isabel sat beside him, her face turned toward the window. Her hospital wristband still circled her wrist, pale against her skin.
