Her eyes blinked open slowly. The light above her bed made her flinch. She squinted, her lips parting as she tried to breathe.

“Easy,” Isaac said softly. He was at her side in a second, one hand on her arm, the other fixing her pillow. “Don’t move too fast.”

Her throat felt dry. She swallowed hard and whispered, “Water.”

He reached for the cup on the table and lifted it to her lips. His hand trembled a little as he tilted it. “Small sips,” he said quietly.

She drank weakly, the cool liquid sliding down her throat. Then she looked at him, her voice almost a whisper. “Why aren’t you yelling?”

He frowned. “What?”

“You always yell,” she said, her lips trembling. “When you’re mad or worried… you yell. So why aren’t you yelling now?”

He stared at her, his jaw tightening. “Isabel, you almost died. Why would I yell at you for that?”

Her eyes filled with tears. She turned her face slightly away, her hand shaking as she tried to adjust her blanket. “It hurts,” she said under h

THREE YEARS LATER“Sorry, Martin,” Isabel said, pushing the mop harder across the floor. Her back ached, but she kept her head down. “I’ll finish in five minutes.” “You said that ten minutes ago,” Martin snapped from behind the counter. “You think this place cleans itself?” She bit her lip and nodded. “I know. I’m almost done.” “You’re always almost done,” he muttered, wiping his hands on a rag. “You’re lucky I even keep you here, Isabel. Other cleaners don’t need babysitting.” She forced a weak smile. “Thank you for keeping me here.” Martin gave a short laugh. “Don’t sound so grateful, just be faster next time.” She wrung out the mop and leaned it against the bucket. “Can I go now? I’ll be back early tomorrow.” “Yeah, yeah,” he said, waving a hand. “You better head home fast. You’ve got a new client tomorrow. One of our best.” Her stomach tightened. “Alright, Martin. What’s the name?” He smirked. “You’ll find out when you get there. Just don’t screw it up.” She

Isaac stood by the window, his hand running over his face. He had been trying to calm himself after what happened, but his mind wouldn’t stop. He turned sharply when he heard footsteps behind him. “Lena,” he said, his tone was firm. She stopped a few feet away, her expression uneasy. “Yes, Mr. Dun.” “I need you to do something for me,” he said, adjusting his cufflinks out of habit even though his hands were trembling slightly. “Isabel will probably leave the house soon. I want you to keep an eye on her.” Lena blinked, uncertain. “Do you want me to go with her, sir?” “No,” he said quickly. “She shouldn't know you’re there. She’s angry and she needs space. I just need to know where she goes, what she’s doing. Make sure she’s safe, but don’t let her see you.” Lena frowned, concern in her voice. “Sir, maybe she needs more than space. She’s been through too much. Shouldn’t we...” “I know,” Isaac cut in softly, his voice strained. “I know she’s hurting. I don’t want her t

It had been five days since the surgery. The doctors said she was strong enough to go home. Strong enough. Isaac had wanted to laugh at that. There was nothing left in her that looked strong. The car was silent. The sound of the tires on the road was the only thing that filled the space between them. Isabel sat beside him, her face turned toward the window. Her hospital wristband still circled her wrist, pale against her skin. Isaac kept stealing glances at her. Her eyes didn’t blink much. She didn’t even flinch when the car hit a bump. Her hands stayed still on her lap. He tried softly, his voice low. “Are you comfortable?” No answer. He shifted closer, his hand resting on her thigh. His thumb rubbed slow circles, trying to comfort her. She didn’t move, didn’t pull away, didn’t even look down. It was like touching a statue. “Isabel,” he said quietly. “You need to eat something when we get back.” Still nothing. He sighed, leaning back against the seat. He hadn’t push

The doctor looked down for a moment before meeting Isaac’s eyes again. “We saved her,” he said quietly. “But the babies didn’t make it.” Isaac’s breath caught. “What?” The doctor repeated it, slower this time. “We managed to stabilize her. She’s alive. But we couldn’t save the babies. There was too much damage, and her body went into shock.” Isaac took a step back, his hand gripping the wall for balance. “You’re saying… they’re gone?” The doctor nodded once. “I’m sorry. It was the only way to save her life.” The doctor sighed. “I know. She was very weak when she came in. Her blood pressure dropped too low. If we delayed the surgery, you would have lost her too.” Isaac looked at him sharply. “How long until she wakes up?” “It may take a while,” the doctor said. “She lost a lot of blood. We have her sedated so her body can rest.” Isaac’s voice came out hoarse. “When can I see her?” “Mr. Dun...” He didn’t wait for the answer. He pushed past the doctor and started wa

Isaac stared at the doctor like he could burn through him. The doctor stood stiff, waiting for the decision, his hands clenched around the clipboard. Isaac’s head was a drum. He thought of the first time he met Isabel. She had been small and fierce and stubborn in a way that had irritated him at first. He had wanted a child then, always said he wanted an heir, someone to carry his name. He remembered telling himself she was useful for that reason. He didn’t just want a child. He wanted her. He wanted them. Two lives on the line and he could not breathe. “Do something,” he said suddenly, the sound rough. “You do not have time to stand there and stare.” The doctor’s jaw worked. “Sir, we need stability. We need to prepare the OR...” “Prepare it faster,” Isaac snapped. “Get me the surgeon now.” The doctor raised a hand like he would calm him. “We are mobilizing. There are protocols...” Isaac’s fingers tightened in his mind. He reached out and grabbed the doctor’s c
