It was news to Talon that the Remington family, although wealthy and of high standards, had recently dipped themselves in a pothole full of muddy water. In summary, an uncalculated investment had plunged them into jeopardy.
Their funds were at the lowest it had ever been in decades and that was why Talon's marital offer was welcomed with open arms by the Remington's. Mr Alfred's hands slightly shook, if Talon had already found out about it then it meant that little by little the news could leak and it wouldn't take long before a blazing headline carrying the near bankruptcy of the Remington family would be splashed all over news channels. He needed to salvage the situation. "Scarlet....," he said turning to his golden child "I think you should let your sister sign" "Dad!" Scarlet shouted, her fists..balled. Mrs Dolores shook her head and moved towards her daughter's side, holding Scarlet's arm in order to calm her down. "Mr Ashwood, you are making a mistake choosing my other daughter" That statement made Halo wince and although she was already used to being kept out of the spotlight. This one stung, and Talon saw it. And so, he decided to fuel the fire. Something that could stoke the heat, something that would make Halo sign without question. "And pray tell Mrs Remington, why is choosing her above Scarlet a mistake?" Dolores gulped as her gaze met Halo's saddened eyes, a twinge of guilt flickered across her face but....but she had to explain this properly. Scarlet was the better choice for all of them. "Apart from the fact that my daughter Scarlet has wanted you for years Mr Ashwood, it is quite obvious that she will be a great addition to you. She knows the reins of business, she is graceful and beautiful, she is strategic and she is a public figure with a high level of recognition. Marrying Scarlet benefits not just us, but you too" That proud smirk returned to Scarlet's face, her blue eyes shining with victory. "Yes Mr Ashwood, having me as your wife would be indeed a feat" Talon smiled, a knowing, brief smile that fizzled out just as quickly as it showed. He turned to the dark haired girl, her chest heaving and her eyes glossed over. Not with tears, but disappointment, very bold disappointment. He placed his palm on her shoulder, feeling her freeze under his touch. Her wide eyes looked up at him with uncertainty and her wet lips slightly quivered. "I am curious about something. For what reason exactly would your family shield you away from the public eye this long and so well in such a way that not even I, realized that the Remington's had another daughter" She remained quiet, fiddling with her fingers and glancing behind him to see the expressions on her family's faces. "Speak. Keeping silent won't benefit any of us" She pressed her lips together thinking of what to say, but her mind kept going to the obvious reason. The reason that kept echoing in her head each time she saw her sister shining in front of screens and important people. While she sat there, in the empty corner of her room. "Because......because I'm not like Scarlet" "Mmn....because you aren't shiny, outspoken, popular or beneficial to the family like she is?" Halo nodded, keeping her head down. His gloved fingers glided under her chin and lifted it up, keeping her gaze locked on his enticing forest green eyes. "Tell me, have they ever made an effort to integrate you into the family, into the limelight too or......or did they just get comfortable keeping you in the dark?" He bent forward keeping his nose just an inch away from the tips of hers and he whispered for her ears alone. "Marry me Halo, and it will be written in bold ink with the court and heavens as our witness that I will give you everything you desire. The limelight, the freedom, the recognition. And I promise you that you will be seen, noticed and respected" It sounded like a witch's spell. Simple, sharp, inescapable. And for the first time in her life, Halo wasn't giving a shit. She threw a glance over his shoulder catching the furious nodding of her mother begging her to decline for Scarlet's sake. But screw Scarlet, this was her life, and this was her choice to make. "I'll sign it" A gasp was heard and an angry Scarlet stomped over to them. Talon stood in front of Halo, silently forbidding Scarlet from coming close. "Halo you can't do this to me, I am your sister!" The doe eyed girl flinched and grabbed onto the contract tightly. Using Talon's body to shield her from her sister's rage. "Mother?," She turned to Mrs Dolores who stood there beckoning helplessly at her husband Alfred who could do nothing but watch the scene unfold. Scarlet with watery eyes looked back at Halo who was hurriedly going through the contract. The little misfit, maybe this had been her plan all along. If she didn't forget to remove her portrait from the wall then Scarlet would've been the one signing the marriage contract with Talon as planned, preparing to get married into a multi- billion dollar family like she had always wanted. "Scarlet don't get angry, please" Halo pleaded even if she didn't need to. "I'd be doing all of us a favour. He doesn't want to get married to you and he chose......he chose me" Talon hummed and took the now-signed contract from Halo with a satisfied expression on his face. He turned towards Mr Alfred and Dolores. "She is right. At first I had actually wanted to get married to Scarlett. But then, after seeing the portrait on the wall I decided that she was who I wanted." He reached backwards and wrapped his gloved hand around Halo's wrist. Pulling her along in a manner that an owner would do to his newly acquired pet.As he said it, two officers came through the side corridor dragging a stretcher between them. A bloodied body lay on it, a white sheet already stained crimson around the head and chest. The sight hit hard.Halo turned away immediately. Talon instinctively reached out and covered her eyes with his hand."Don’t look.""What the hell is this?" Talon questioned. The detective pressed his lips together. "That’s one of the kitchen staff. The Chestnut haired girl.""What?" Talon narrowed his eyes. "She’s dead?"The junior detective, Kevin, stepped forward. "We had finished basic interrogation with her. She was quiet yesterday. But this morning, she came in ready to talk. She was very nervous, shaking even. Said she had something to confess, but not in front of everyone. We pulled her into one of the private rooms. She kept glancing at her phone. Then it rang.""She picked it?" Talon asked."She did," Kevin nodded. "We didn’t stop her. We thought it was a family member. It lasted maybe thirt
It was morning.Halo blinked, and for a second, she forgot where she was. Then she felt an arm slung around her waist. And someone was breathing near her neck.He was still asleep. Or so she thought. He clung to her like a child would a stuffed toy, face buried softly against the back of her shoulder. Peaceful. Really peaceful.This....was definitely the first night they'd shared a bed. Properly. She didn't move for a moment, unsure if to.Then, slowly, she turned her head, just slightly. And then she caught him staring."You’re awake," she said."I was about to say the same thing." His voice was rough with sleep. "But yeah.....I have been awake a bit. I just didn’t want to move."She didn’t answer that.He stretched a little, still holding her. "Wanna go downstairs? Maybe grab some breakfast?"Halo raised a brow."You spoon me all night and think food is the next logical step?"He smirked. "A man’s gotta eat."She rolled her eyes, but she was already sitting up."Fine. But I'm not ma
Halo hadn't felt anything like this before, she had a mini crush once, so she wasn't a stranger to the feeling of desire. But this......was on a different scale. They had said their goodnights and gone to bed, keeping whatever unfinished conversation for the morning to come. But it wasn't till her eyes snapped open in the middle of the night that she felt someone grinding against her."Sshhh, turn wifey." He whispered as his hips worked quickly against hers. How could she go back to bed like this,His lips were caressing and kissing away at her neck. She was trying to reel in her gasps, feeling weak at the knees."Talon.....what are you doing?""Isn't it obvious?" He cocked a brow, "getting some friction." She felt his palm cover the top of her mounds and she sprang up. That action made Talon to roll over the bed in shock, his mouth was wide and his eyes were apologetic."Shit, I didn't.....I thought -"All this while, he had thought that he was in a dream, he didn't realize he wa
Shortly after Halo left, the back door creaked open again. Karina slipped inside, her jacket slung over one shoulder and a smirk playing on her lips. "Forgot something," she purred, closing the door behind her. Talon didn’t argue. He was too conflicted. When Karina approached him, he let her touch him, let her kiss him. But as her hands roamed, Talon found himself holding back. His mind wasn’t on Karina. It was stuck upstairs, behind a locked door where someone he had left upstairs was pretending not to be hurt. After a few strained minutes, Talon pulled away. "You should go," he muttered, standing up and grabbing her jacket from the chair. Karina sighed dramatically but didn't argue. She took the jacket, gave him a lazy wink, and slipped out the door without a word. The house fell quiet again. Talon stood there, his hands clenched, before forcing himself eventually to move. He walked upstairs, every step feeling heavier than the last. He hesitated outside the doo
Halo had found a spare nightwear and fallen asleep in the guest bedroom, expecting to return home later. However, Talon had insisted on spending the night. The new mobile phone Talon had purchased for Halo sat on the bedside table, and Halo had punched in her parent's numbers, accidentally flashing Scarlet instead. When Scarlet called back, her tone was far from happy. As Halo glanced over at Talon, she noticed he was stirring in his sleep. His hands were clasped over his chest, and his knees were drawn up to his torso in a fetal position. Suddenly, Halo heard rushed panicked breaths from Talon, and she was immediately alarmed. She went to his side and lightly shook his shoulders.Talon's green eyes blinked open, glazed over with unshed tears."Are you crying?" She realized it was a stupid question as soon as she saw the tears. Talon stood up from the bed, moving the sheets aside, and muttered, "I'm fine, go back to bed."Halo's confusion and worry grew. "I can't go back to bed, Tal
It didn’t take long.By the time the afternoon sun started dipping into early evening, Chief Rawley arrived with two patrol vans, three officers in dark blue uniforms, and a notepad already filled with scribbled questions.Talon stood at the front door, waiting. Zorro lingered behind him, arms folded, his expression tight. Halo stayed inside the living room, seated, hands clasped together, her gaze flicking between the door and the hallway.Chief Rawley stepped forward. “Mr. Ashwood.”Talon nodded. “Thank you for coming.”The officers moved around the perimeter, entering the kitchen and back corridors. The staff were already lined up in the service hallway, murmuring nervously among themselves. The butler stood straight and sharp. The cook who’d peeked out earlier was pale, avoiding everyone’s gaze.“Your report said murder,” Rawley said under his breath as he stepped aside with Talon. “We’ll need the doctor's findings in full before making this official.”“Doctor Greg is ready to coo
Talon sat on the bench just outside the manor, staring blankly into the trees with his arms crossed. The doctor had come with the ambulance an hour ago. They took his father's body, wrapped it, covered it respectfully, and carried it out of the house. Zorro had watched them leave, his face tear-streaked. Halo stood quietly, a few feet away from Talon, watching him, but not coming too close. She wanted to at least offer comfort to him.But he didn’t want comfort. He didn't want to hear her soothing voice,He didn’t want pity or soft words.,He wanted silence. The doctor lingered behind. Talon had just opened his mouth to ask about the official report, stroke, heart failure, anything that could be written off as a natural death. But Dr. Gregg had hesitated, then gestured for Talon to follow him away from the others."I need to speak to you. Alone," the doctor said.Talon stepped onto the balcony with the doctor following behind him."What is it?"Dr. Gregg looked over his shoulder, the
Zorro stood in the center of the room, his face a mask of controlled fury. He paced back and forth, shocked and annoyed."There is no way Esil would hand over the shares to you just like that, she is my wife, how would she hand over the shares to you."Muttering under his breath, He lifted his phone and tried dialing Esil's number. The phone rang once, then twice, but the call went unanswered. The message on his screen read 'Number busy.' Frustration mounting, he switched apps and attempted to text Esil directly. His texts would not deliver. Even his social media messages bounced back to him: it seemed Esil had blocked him."She blocked me? She blocked me?!" he repeated in disbelief, his voice rising in anger.Determined to get an answer, he called Esil's sister. The call went straight to voicemail. He then tried reaching Esil's uncle, and again there was no answer. Not willing to give up, he called Esil's mother, but still, nothing. He paced furiously, kicking the leg of the dining
The boy sat between them in the backseat, his fingers still sticky with sugar from the cookies he'd devoured at the orphanage. Talon didn’t say much during the drive. Halo glanced at him now and then, noting how he kept checking the rearview mirror, not out of caution, but to glance at the kid. They pulled into a wide stone driveway. A house stood ahead, elegant yet warm, vines curling up one side and flowerbeds neatly trimmed along the porch. There was an old bronze wind chime at the entrance, swaging softly in the wind. The scent of something sweet baking could be smelt from an open window.Halo stepped out first, scanning the peaceful surroundings. Talon opened the door for the boy, who stepped out hesitantly, holding onto the edge of Talon's jacket. The door creaked open before they could knock. An elderly man with a thick grey mustache and sleep in his eyes stepped out, blinking at the sunlight. He straightened when he saw Talon."Ashwood. You're a sight.""Eli. Sorry to drop i
