LOGINAmber’s POV
Hearing him address me like that did something to me and I wasn’t sure why especially when he put his arms over my shoulders. He never behaved that friendly with me since I have known him so why now. Even after I explained how I knew him, it still felt like he wasn’t satisfied, more like he doubted me and that was when I remembered. Vee mentioned that they were rivals and my boss just saw me being friendly with his rival. Great, just great Amber. Back home, I tried to shake off the tension. Cooking was my comfort, my way of moving past everything. If not that I needed a stable income, I would have opened a restaurant but I didn’t have a sponsor so I settled for the available. Making my way to his study, “Dinner’s ready,” I called. “I don’t remember asking you to cook, Amber.” He said with raised brows. “I just thought you needed something to eat since you haven’t had any and don’t worry, it’s not poisoned.” “You think am scared of poison?” He scoffed. “I just don’t like favors, I don’t want to owe you anything,” he said, refusing. “It’s my way of saying thank you for the clothes” I countered lightly. Sighing in defeat, he joined me at the dining table. He ate in silence at first, then finally said, “Thank you.” His eyes lingered on me longer than necessary. I could feel the tension between us, all of a sudden the air changed and it felt heavy. But before it could go further, his phone rang, he answered much to my dismay. He stood up almost immediately after the call, his expression going cold again like he didn’t also feel the tension. “I have work to finish,” he said flatly, already walking away. Of course. Back to this version of him. I cleared the table quietly, trying not to overthink the way he had looked at me earlier, the way his voice had softened when he said thank you. Hours later, I woke up, my throat dry. The house was silent. I slipped out of bed, careful not to make any noise as I made my way to the kitchen. After drinking water, I was heading back when I noticed his door slightly open. At first, I wanted to ignore it. It wasn’t my business. Nothing about Adrian ever was. But then I heard a low muffled groan “…Mom…” I froze. Another restless movement followed, the sheets rustling. He sounded, scared. Not his usual arrogance, who would have thought that the great Adrain Volkov could have nightmares. At that moment, he looked vulnerable. Before I could talk myself out of it, I pushed the door open gently. He was tossing on the bed, his face tense, brows furrowed, like he was fighting something in his sleep. “Don’t go” he muttered. Seeing him that way made me feel some type of way that I didn’t understand. I hesitated for a second, then stepped closer. “Adrian” I called softly. No response. I swallowed, sitting carefully at the edge of the bed. My hand hovered before I finally placed it lightly on his arm. “Adrian,” I whispered again, softer this time. Without thinking, I started humming a soft tune my mother used to sing to me when I had nightmares. It felt silly at first but slowly his movements eased, his breathing steadied and the tension in his face softened. I reached for the duvet and pulled it over him properly, tucking it slightly like someone who cared. Realizing myself, I stood up quietly, ready to leave when he suddenly wrapped his hands around my wrist. “Don’t go.” he murmured, eyes still closed. For a moment, I considered pulling away but something in his voice or was it because I know how it feels to have nightmares with no one around to bring you out of it. Eventually, I settled for the latter. Carefully, I sat back down, gently tapping on his chest while resting my head on the headboard and before I knew it, the exhaustion pulled me under too. Adrian’s POV The darkness came again, it always did but this time, something was different. There was a voice soft and familiar, a melody I hadn’t heard in years. My mother’s song, the one she used to sing when the nightmares got too much. The one that always made everything feel safe. I smiled slightly in my sleep, trying to hold onto it. Because for the first time in a long time, the darkness didn’t win. **** Morning came slower than usual and this time, I had a peaceful night. I opened my eyes, already expecting the usual tension in my chest, the lingering frustration but it wasn’t there. Instead something warm rested against me, my gaze dropped to my chest and it was Amber sleeping in my bed. My jaw tightened instantly. “What the hell”? I pulled away sharply, the movement waking her. Her eyes fluttered open, confusion settling in before realization hit. “I…” she started. “Get out.” My voice was cold and sharp. I could tell she was shocked but I didn’t care. “I said get out, Amber.” She quickly got off the bed, clearly flustered. “You were having a nightmare and your door was open, I just…” “And that gave you the right to crawl into my bed?” I cut in, my tone laced with accusation. Her expression fell. “That’s not what happened.” “Oh really?” I scoffed, standing up. “Because it looks exactly like what it is.” Her brows furrowed, hurt flashing across her face. “I was helping you.” “I didn’t ask for your help,” I snapped. “And I definitely don’t need whatever this is.” The room was silent and the silence was suffocating. She stared at me, disbelief written all over her face. “You’re just like the rest of them.” She blinked. “What do you mean?” I gave her a cold look not caring if my words hurt her. “A slut looking for an opportunity.” The moment the words left my mouth, the look on her face changed, she was hurt but I couldn’t bother. “Understood,” she said softly. No argument, no defense, just that then she walked out. The rest of the day was formal. “Your schedule for today, sir,” she said without looking at me. I took the file. “Reschedule the 2PM meeting.” “Noted.” Nothing more, no extra conversations, not her trying to start up a conversation with me or catch my eyes. No eye contact, no warmth, just a cold attitude. Good, That’s how it should be. So why did it bother me?Amber’s povI stood in front of the mirror trying to check my outfit for the umpteenth time. This was the first time I would be meeting Adrian’s family and I don’t know why I’m nervous about it. I guess it’s probably the fact that I have to make it believable to his cousins and uncle who he already has a bad blood with. I was still lost in my thoughts when I heard his voice from outside my door. “You always look good Amber, you don’t have to beat yourself up about it plus it’s not a big deal” He said. “You think so? You think they would like me ? I asked worriedly. “They don’t have to like you, we are just going to introduce you to them, that’s all. If for any reason you feel uncomfortable, tell me.”There he goes again, making me feel protected and when I long for more, he disappears. Shaking my head and refusing to be delusional once more, I took a deep breath and we left the house together. ****The house was bigger than I expected. Warm and lively too, nothing like Adrian’s.
Ambers pov After the last conversation we had concerning why I signed the contract, I made sure not be in sight. Luckily, his schedule was completely cleared because of the fake honeymoon we were on. I hadn’t stepped out of my room since today since I didn’t want to bump into him. I was cooped up in my room with no break fast, no lunch and now it’s almost dinner time and I don’t think I can endure this too. Passing by the hallway, i saw him in the kitchen, sleeves rolled up, pouring water like a Greek god. He didn’t look he was the same man who ran an entire company with ruthless precision.I should have kept walking but I didn’t, instead I stopped to savor the sight. He looked different from the usual arrogant and domineering boss to a man who just let his guard down and wants to just live in the moment. He looked like a family man, and I wondered if he would still look this scary if he eventually marries and has kids running down the hallway waiting for him to be back from wo
Amber’s pov It was already evening before I could discuss with Vee the reason why Adrian’s grandmother came to see me and she wasn’t having it. “What do you mean she wants you to marry her grandson to change him? Does that even make sense?” She said irritated. “I don’t know what to do Vee, I’m confused.”“You don’t have to be confused, this is ridiculous. Since when did marriage become the cure for his arrogant and derogatory attitude?” I could feel it, she was reaching her limit. It’s been a while I saw her this irritated and it was called for anyways. But why did it feel like the right thing to do? Why couldn’t I refuse her the moment she said it. “Amber, don’t tell me you are agreeing to it.”I sighed“What’s the worst that can happen Vee, I already live with him as it is so it’s nothing new. I just have to sign the contract. That's all plus don’t forget there’s a monetary benefit. We need all the money we can get Vee, I can finally own my dream restaurant.”Sighing in defea
Amber’s POV I didn’t stop running until I got to Vee’s place. My chest was rising and falling all at the same time. My mind still spinning from everything that had just happened. The kiss, the cameras and him. “Amber?” Vee’s voice came from behind me, laced with concern. “What happened? You look a mess.” I turned to her, and just like that, everything came crashing down. “He kissed me,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. Her eyes widened. “Who?” “Adrian.” “What? Why? What happened?” I sank into the couch, running my fingers through my hair. “In front of everyone and the press too. Richard and I were dancing and all of a sudden, he just…he just pulled me and kissed me like…” I trailed off. “Like what?” she pressed. I swallowed. “Like he was trying to claim me or something.” Vee stared at me for a moment, then sat beside me. “Claim you ? Okay and what did you do, you ran?” “Yes, that was all I could do.” She tilted her head slightly. “Did you push him away immediat
Richard’s POVI didn’t know she could be any more beautiful than she already is. The moment they walked in, the entire room shifted. Heads turned and cameras flashed but none of that mattered to me.Because all I could see was her.She walked beside Adrian, her hand resting lightly on his arm, poised, elegant like she had always belonged in this world. The dress hugged her perfectly, the slit revealing just enough to make it impossible not to look.I exhaled slowly, she was doing something to me that I didn’t understand. So this was the version of her he got to see every day, lucky bastard. My gaze shifted to Adrian, and for a brief second, our eyes met. There was something in his stare, sharp and possessive.I made my way towards them.“Amber,” I called, my voice calm but deliberate. She turned, and just like that, her expression softened.“Richard.” There it was again, that smile.I smiled slightly. “You look stunning.” And I meant it.For a second, I wished I was the one stan
Adrian’s POVI glanced at my watch and only then did I realize how late I had stayed up.I stepped out of the study and was met with silence. The kind that didn’t just sit in a room, it was suffocating. Ever since that morning, she had been avoiding me.Not in an obvious way, Amber was smarter than that. She still did her job, perfectly to the core. Every file in place, every schedule updated, every task executed without a single complaint. But she wouldn’t speak to me, not unless it was necessary. No small talk, no warmth. I didn’t know why that bothered me.I walked past the dining area and paused, dinner was neatly placed on the table, covered. More like she knew I would take forever to come out. I exhaled slowly, pulling the chair back. I didn’t know why I lashed out that way or maybe I did.I hated being seen like that, vulnerable and weak. And she saw it, worse, she stayed.Which meant she was also the reason I had slept peacefully for the first time in years. That didn’t sit
