LOGINAdrian’s POV
I glanced at my watch and only then did I realize how late I had stayed up. I stepped out of the study and was met with silence. The kind that didn’t just sit in a room, it was suffocating. Ever since that morning, she had been avoiding me. Not in an obvious way, Amber was smarter than that. She still did her job, perfectly to the core. Every file in place, every schedule updated, every task executed without a single complaint. But she wouldn’t speak to me, not unless it was necessary. No small talk, no warmth. I didn’t know why that bothered me. I walked past the dining area and paused, dinner was neatly placed on the table, covered. More like she knew I would take forever to come out. I exhaled slowly, pulling the chair back. I didn’t know why I lashed out that way or maybe I did. I hated being seen like that, vulnerable and weak. And she saw it, worse, she stayed. Which meant she was also the reason I had slept peacefully for the first time in years. That didn’t sit right with me, nothing about her did. What was so different about her that my entire body calmed at her touch? I couldn’t allow that, I had built my walls for a reason. Maybe I went too far, calling her that and comparing her to those women but wasn’t she overreacting? I scoffed under my breath, women always did. I lifted the cover, and the aroma hit me instantly, homely and comforting. I ate in silence, the taste lingering longer than it should. By the time I was done, I was heading back to my room when I heard it. Her laughter. It was soft and real, I stopped. It wasn’t the polite tone she used with me, this was different. The kind I heard when she conversed with Richard. Somehow, I was the only person she hadn’t shown this side of her. She was on the phone. “…stop it,” she said between laughter. “You’re so annoying.” Whoever was on the other end, she liked them, a lot. That explains the free speech and warm laughter. My jaw tightened, I wasn’t pleased with that and I wondered who she was conversing with. Before I could think, I turned the corner. She was standing by the window, phone pressed to her ear, smiling. I cleared my throat, her expression changed almost immediately. She straightened, the smile disappeared and the warmth vanished. “Sir,” she said, ending the call almost immediately. “There’s a charity event tonight,” I said, keeping my tone neutral. “You’ll be accompanying me.” “Noted.” That was it, no questions, no reaction. I frowned slightly. “Prepare everything.” “I already have.” Of course she did. Silence stretched between us, I thought she was a chatterbox so what changed? “Amber?” “Yes, sir?” she cut in, professional, distant. I paused, that wasn’t what I wanted. “I….” I stopped myself. What exactly was I going to say? Sorry? The word didn’t sit well with me. I can’t remember the last time I said it either. “…make sure you’re ready on time,” I finished instead. Her expression didn’t change. “I always am.” And just like that, she walked past me. Amber’s POV It wasn’t until I heard him that I realized he was there and I wondered how long he stood there for. I hoped he didn’t know I was conversing with Richard. Not that I was selling off company’s secret or anything, I just felt obligated not to let him know I was laughing to his rivals joke. “Sir” I said, hoping he wouldn’t notice the tension in my voice. “There’s a charity event tonight. You will be accompanying me.” He said. “Noted.” I kept my tone even, not daring to match his stare. I don’t want to look like an opportunity grabber. I wondered what made him see me that way, I was embarrassed that I keep reliving that moment every time. “Amber” For a second, my heart betrayed me, I almost looked at him. There’s just something about the way he says my name and what it does to me. “Yes, sir?” I noticed him hesitate, he was holding back from whatever he wanted to say. “Make sure you are ready on time,” he said. Why did I think he was about to say something else? “I always am,” I said before walking away. **** Hours later, I stood in front of the mirror. The dress hugged my body perfectly, elegant and simple but it exuded a different aura. Glad I wasn’t too stubborn to refuse his kind gesture when he wanted to get me clothes. I found a royal blue gown with a slit by the side and paired it with silver jewelries with a silver heel too. I barely recognized myself, for a moment, I just stared. I never dressed up this way not even for a date with that scumbag. Still basking in my appearance, I heard him tell the driver to start the car and that was my reality check. This was a business dinner and not some romantic date, then I fixed my expression. It was work, nothing more. Adrian’s POV I was speaking to the driver when I heard the soft click of heels coming down the stairs. I turned and for a second, everything stopped. She stood at the top of the stairs, the dress flowing effortlessly over her body, every step graceful. Beautiful wasn’t enough to describe her. She was... I clenched my jaw slightly, get a grip. I watched her l walk towards me, calm and composed. Like she didn’t just alter my thinking. “Ready, sir?” she asked. I stepped closer, my eyes scanning her before I could stop myself. “You look…” I paused, “Appropriate.” Her lips twitched slightly, was that amusement? “I’m glad I meet your standards.” I exhaled slowly. “Let’s go.” *** The ride was quiet, the tension between us was heavy and I didn’t like it. By the time we arrived, the venue was already buzzing with elites, flashing lights, and quiet conversations. I stepped out first, then turned to her. For a moment, I just looked at her, I stared. She didn’t belong in my world and yet she fit too perfectly into it. I offered my arm, she hesitated then she took it. But as we walked in together, I couldn’t shake the feeling creeping in my chest. Something was about to change. And for the first time in a long time, I wasn’t sure I was in control of it.Adrian’s pov Standing outside her room, I kept pacing back and forth not knowing whether to knock or just walk past. Since the last incident, she’s been avoiding me and it’s worse since we didn’t go to work anymore.I could hear the rustling pages of a book, I guess she’s reading a book. I really don’t even know how to go over and invite her for the banquet we would be going for. She made it clear to me that she hated my guts and didn’t want to have anything to do with me but this banquet is a huge deal for me as I get to meet investors too. I knocked on her door twice but got no response and just as I was about to leave, I heard the door creak open. It looked like she had been away for months while she was just here but staying away from me. “I’m sorry to disturb you, I just wanted to give you this.” I said stretching out my hand to give her a box. It contained a gown and jewellery for the banquet tonight. She looked at the box and back at me before muttering some words. “What’s
Adrian’s POVI watched the footage again and it was clearly Amber’s room. The camera angle was precise and it looked like it was planted more like a device. It didn’t look like it was taken by chance or from outside, it looked like an inside job. Who would come to my house to plant a device or did my workers betray me?My jaw tightened.“Run it back,” I said. The screen flickered as the video replayed. The angle didn’t move, it was a fixed position and it was hidden well. This wasn’t Aaron. This was way too professional and well thought out to be Aaron. Aaron was clumsy, he didn’t even have the resources to be able to get this close to my house. This wasn’t some desperate ex trying to make money, this was calculated. My phone buzzed.“Sir, we’ve got movement again.”“Location?”“It’s inconsistent. He’s switching fast. Burner devices.”I exhaled slowly, forcing my thoughts into order. Burner devices? Now it’s clear, I have ruled out Aaron certainly. He’s not capable enough to use bu
Adrian’s POVI didn’t sleep a wink last night, not because of her this time but because of that message.“You really think you’ve won? Let’s see how long she stays yours.”I stood in my study, staring at the screen again like I could figure out who the coward was or the words would somehow change. Whoever this was, they weren’t just bluffing. And that meant one thing, this wasn’t random.I dialed a number immediately, and he picked up the second ring.“Sir.”“I want everything pulled up again,” I said, my voice sharp. “Calls, messages, digital footprints. I don’t care how clean they think they are, find them.”“Yes, sir.”“And increase security.”“For her?”“For the house, for the office and everywhere she goes.”“Yes, sir.”I ended the call, my grip tightening around the phone. Whoever this was, they knew exactly what they were doing. I thought about this long and hard but I couldn’t figure anything out and it was driving me crazy. I stepped out of the study just as I saw her walki
Amber’s POVI stayed awake all night staring at the ceiling in my room. Sleep wasn’t forthcoming as I relayed the day’s events over and over again.I couldn’t help but think about him and the way he said those words “You’re mine.” Something about it sent a tingling sensation down my spine. The words kept replaying in my head like a song I didn’t want to remember but couldn’t forget either. I turned on the bed, pulling the duvet tighter around me.This was getting out of hand, It was just a contract.A one-year agreement and nothing more so why did it feel like something was shifting?I exhaled and sat up. Maybe I needed water or something to distract me from the excessive thinking. The house was quiet as I stepped out, what did I expect? He’s probably asleep, it’s so late on the night. But just as I got to the kitchen, I saw him. He was leaning against the counter, sleeves rolled up and a glass of water in his hand. He looked like he had been there for a while and his ruffled ha
Adrian’s POV I couldn’t sleep. Not because I wasn’t tired but because I kept thinking about her. The way she looked when I walked into that room. She looked lost and shaken, she was trying so hard to hold herself together. I didn’t like it. I didn’t like that some pathetic excuse of a man had that much effect on her. And I definitely didn’t like the fact that she didn’t tell me. That didn’t sit right with me. I stood by the window, phone in hand, replaying everything Vee had said. Aaron. The name alone irritated me. Her ex-boyfriend, Pathetic and desperate. He was stupid enough to think he could get away with threatening my wife. A slow smile formed on my lips, he picked the wrong woman. I dialed a number. “Find him.” “I want everything. Where he lives, who he talks to, what he does. Everything.” “Yes, sir.” I ended the call. This wasn’t going to take long, I trusted my sources. I stepped out, expecting to see her, but the hallway was empty. She was probably still asleep
Amber’s POV“Amber, it’s time to go.”His voice came through the door again, not the usual arrogant tone but firm enough to pull me out of my spiraling thoughts.I stared at my phone, my hands still shaking. A million dollars by tomorrow, where do I get the money from ? My chest tightened just by thinking about it. “Amber?”“I will meet you downstairs. ”I managed to say, my voice barely steady.I quickly got out of bed, forcing myself to move like everything was normal. Like I wasn’t about to break down in tears. The drive to the office felt longer than usual.I sat beside Adrian, quiet, my mind replaying the video over and over again.I shut my eyes briefly, I couldn’t afford to break down now at least not in front of him. “Did you sleep at all?” he asked suddenly.I blinked, turning to him. “Why would you ask that?”“You look like you didn’t.”“I’m fine,” I replied quickly. He stared at me for a second longer than necessary before he looked away.“I didn’t ask if you were fine.”
Amber’s povI stood in front of the mirror trying to check my outfit for the umpteenth time. This was the first time I would be meeting Adrian’s family and I don’t know why I’m nervous about it. I guess it’s probably the fact that I have to make it believable to his cousins and uncle who he alread
Amber’s POV I knew the moment I stepped into that office that today was going to ruin me. Not because of the interview nor because of the building. Because of him. He was sitting behind the desk like he belonged there, like the entire world bent itself around his existence yet somehow, I wasn’t
I met Vee standing outside the gate, and the moment she saw me, she rushed forward and pulled me into a tight hug. That was all it took. The tears came rushing out before I could stop them. “I’m so sorry,” she murmured, rubbing my back. “Aaron has always been a scumbag. I don’t expect much from h
“Amber!!! Get your ass out of that bed!” Vee said, dragging my legs. I groaned, dragging a pillow over my head. “Your job is the only thing keeping us afloat for now, and you are not about to lose that job because of your reckless sleeping habit,” Vee, my best friend shouted. Okay, maybe sh
