LOGINâYou can still walk away,â he said, his voice lower now. I shook my head. âI donât want to.â Something in his expression softened, just slightly. Then he stepped closer. Close enough that I could feel the warmth of his body, the steady rhythm of his breathing. For a second, neither of us moved. Like we were both waiting, deciding. His hand lifted, hesitating just slightly before brushing against my jaw, tilting my face up to his. âLast chance,â he murmured. I didnât answer, I didnât need to. I closed the distance instead. The kiss wasnât soft. It was searching, deliberate. Like he was testing something, me. And I responded before I could stop myself. Before I could think. My fingers curled into his shirt, pulling him closer as the world around us slipped further out of reach. The hesitation was gone now. Replaced by something heavier, something I didnât want to question. And this time, I didnât think.

I groaned, dragging a pillow over my head. âYour job is the only thing keeping us afloat for now, and you are not about to lose that job because of your reckless sleeping habit,â Vee, my best friend shouted. Okay, maybe she had a point. Yawning, I sluggishly got out of bed and shot her an annoyed look. Yes, I have a bad sleeping habit, but she was being dramatic. âAlright, Vee, Iâm awake. Iâll just freshen up,â I mumbled. âBetter,â she said. I could still hear her voice from outside my room, and I just shook my head. One minute sheâs my best friend, and the next she acts like a mother who would whoop my ass if I misbehaved. If Vee didnât drag me out of bed every morning, Iâd probably be homeless by now. âVee, Iâm leaving. Take care of yourself!â I called as I hurried out of the house. I got to the office, hoping the supervisor wasnât there yet then I saw people gathered at the notice board. Wondering what was going on, I moved closer and saw Sarah, one of the best employees moving out with a packed up bag. She saw me and gave me a sad smile. Walking past her and wondering what that was about, I saw the board. LIST OF LAID OFF EMPLOYEES. My heart started thumping so hard, I thought it would jump out of my chest, hands trembling. I scanned the list and there it was. Amber Peters. Number five. âWhyâ? I asked no one in particular. I could feel my eyes become blurry, I wrapped my arms around me as if trying to comfort myself. âI heard the company is running low on funds. They canât keep everyone anymore,â John, one of the laid-off employees, said quietly. âIt doesnât make sense. There has to be something that can be done, right?â Without waiting for an answer, I stormed toward the managerâs office. âMiss Amber Peters, donât you know how to knock?â he said. âIâm sorry, sir. I just saw the list. Why am I on it?â My voice came out tighter than I intended. âIâve devoted everything to this office. You canât just lay me off like that.â âSo because you were devoted to the job you were being paid for, does that mean you co-own the company?â he snapped. âYou only did your job, Amber. Stop whining. Youâre not the only one we laid off, there are other people who were better than you too. âSir⊠is that all you have to say?â âWellâŠthere might be another way to keep your job.â His eyes dragged over me slowly. âIf youâre willing to cooperate, of course.â I froze. âWhat do you mean?â He stepped closer. âYouâre a smart girl, Amber,â his voice dropped. âIâm sure you understand how these things work.â My stomach churned. His hand lifted to her face, too close. âSpend some time with me, and your name disappears from that list.â âYou disgusting pig.â I shoved him away. âEven if you were the last man on earth, I would never touch you.â And yes, keep your damn job. I donât need it, asswipe.â I slammed the door behind me. I sounded brave but I knew if I spent any more second here, I would break down. I grabbed my things and left without saying goodbye to anyone. I didnât want to go home plus I didnât have any friends except Vee of course. Calling Vee wasnât an option, she would be at her interview by now. âI could really use a hug right now and if anybody could help me, it would be my boyfriend, Aaron. So I headed to his place. ***** Loud music blasted from inside his apartment. Not wanting to waste time outside, I used my key. The moment I stepped in, the smell of weed hit me. Bottles of alcohol were scattered everywhere. Then I heard it. Voices from the bedroom. My stomach dropped. âAaronâŠ?â I pushed the door open. I froze. I saw a woman with her legs raised up while my boyfriend rammed into her with much gusto. Even with the music so high, her moans were all I could hear. âWhat the fuck, Aaron?â I shouted. They both turned. He looked shocked for a second⊠then annoyed. âWhat are you doing here? Arenât you supposed to be at work?â I blinked. âIs that what you should be saying to me?â âYou should have called first, Amber. Then you wouldnât have seen this.â He said âCalled first? I laughed hollowly. âShould I have asked permission to see my boyfriend cheating? You donât even have the dignity to apologize, but youâre trying to blame me?â I queried. âDonât start, Amber. Stop overreacting and try to understand where Iâm coming from.â It was bad enough that I caught him in this position but he wasnât even moving. The woman stared at me with a smirk on her face, she was enjoying this. I blinked again. âUnderstand what?â âYou pushed me to do thisâ "I pushed you? We couldâve talked about whatever this is, Aaron.â He looked at me, and for the first time, I couldnât read his expression. Thankfully he had the decency to cover himself although I believed the only reason he untangled himself from the woman was because I had ruined the mood. âAmber, just go. Iâll check on you later. I have a guest.â âWhat do you mean? Are you chasing me out?â âIâm done with whatever this is. I canât continue anymore, so just leave. Youâre making my guest uncomfortable, I donât appreciate that.â âI wonât leave, Iâm going nowhâŠâ The words died in my throat as he suddenly appeared in front of me and shoved me out of his apartment. I stumbled outside, the music fading behind me. The night air was cold but it couldnât cool the fire in my chest. I was so stunned at his behavior that I could only crouch down to cry my heart out. Two years. Late-night calls, promises, plans that suddenly meant nothing. And just like that⊠it was over. All for what, sex. When things got rough, I stayed, even when Vee had repeatedly warned me. I didnât listen. I was in love or so I thought. And now⊠this. I laughed. The sound echoed down the road, hollow and strange. I was jobless, probably homeless soon, and my boyfriend, gone. I stumbled to the nearest bench, hugging my knees to my chest. The world felt impossibly loud, the music from Aaronâs apartment, the distant sirens, the honking cars, all mocking me. âGreat⊠just great,â I whispered to the empty street. My voice cracked. âWhat a day.â I felt something vibrating in my pocket and realized it was my phone. Looking at my screen, I could see several missed calls from Vee which I had missed because of that scumbag. I immediately picked the call and her angry voice came from the other side of the phone. âWhy do you have a phone when you donât use it?â Vee screamed. âIâm sorry Vee, I just had a lot.â Well, hurry up! Thereâs a job offer for you.Amberâs POVHearing him address me like that did something to me and I wasnât sure why especially when he put his arms over my shoulders. He never behaved that friendly with me since I have known him so why now. Even after I explained how I knew him, it still felt like he wasnât satisfied, more like he doubted me and that was when I remembered. Vee mentioned that they were rivals and my boss just saw me being friendly with his rival. Great, just great Amber. Back home, I tried to shake off the tension. Cooking was my comfort, my way of moving past everything. If not that I needed a stable income, I would have opened a restaurant but I didnât have a sponsor so I settled for the available. Making my way to his study, âDinnerâs ready,â I called.âI donât remember asking you to cook, Amber.â He said with raised brows. âI just thought you needed something to eat since you havenât had any and donât worry, itâs not poisoned.ââYou think am scared of poison?â He scoffed. âI just donât li
Amberâs POVThe first day at work felt heavier than I expected. My outfit, the only decent clothes that seemed harmless at least to me, didn't sit well with some people. Not that I cared, I just wanted to make a good impression with the people I would be working with but the whispers started the moment I stepped into the office.âTheyâre really letting anyone in these days,â one woman said with disgust shown all over her face. âDid she even try? That outfit, really?â another sneered. I kept my head high, walking with my confidence and pretending not to hear. Pretending became an art over the years. But someone had heard. And it wasnât just anyone.âAmber,â a voice cut through the murmur, low and angry. I looked up to find Adrian standing there, eyes sharp like they were boring into my soul. âYou are not going to a meeting dressed like that.âI swallowed, keeping my composure. The look on his face was filled with irritation. His tone was demeaning and full of that arrogant authority
Amberâs POV By the time I got home, my head was a mess. Everything felt unreal. Last night, the interview. Him. Adrian Volkov, my boss. I pushed the door open and barely stepped inside when Vee appeared in front of me. âAmber!â she grabbed my arms. âWhere have you been? Do you know how worried I was?â I let out a breath. âYou might want to sit down for this.â Her eyes lit up instantly. âThat bad or that good?â âBoth.â That was all it took. We were on the couch in seconds. âStart talking,â she said, practically vibrating with excitement. I hesitated for a second. Then I said it. âI didnât come home last night.â âWell, I know thatâs why I was worried. What happened last night? What were youâŠâ Vee froze. Then slowly, a grin spread across her face. âNo way.â âYes way.â âAmberrrr!â she squealed, hitting my arm. âYou did not!â âI did.â âWith who?!â I ran a hand through my hair. âThatâs where it gets complicated.â âComplicated how?â I looked at her. âThe man from
Amberâs POV I knew the moment I stepped into that office that today was going to ruin me. Not because of the interview nor because of the building. Because of him. He was sitting behind the desk like he belonged there, like the entire world bent itself around his existence yet somehow, I wasnât surprised. Of course he was rich, he was powerful. Of course the man I had a one-night stand with had to be him, Adrian Volkov, my potential boss. My stomach twisted, what was the point of this interview anyway? I shouldnât have given in to Vee now look at where this got me. His eyes were on me now. Calm and Unreadable, like last night didnât happen. âMiss Amber,â he said, voice smooth, almost indifferent, as usual. âYouâre late.â âIâŠâ I swallowed quickly. âIâm not late. I was told to come in atâŠâ âYou were told to be prepared,â he cut in. My lips pressed together. Okay. So this was how it was going to be. Professional. Cold. Like he didnât have his hands on me just hours ago. â
