LOGINRichard’s POV
I didn’t know she could be any more beautiful than she already is. The moment they walked in, the entire room shifted. Heads turned and cameras flashed but none of that mattered to me. Because all I could see was her. She walked beside Adrian, her hand resting lightly on his arm, poised, elegant like she had always belonged in this world. The dress hugged her perfectly, the slit revealing just enough to make it impossible not to look. I exhaled slowly, she was doing something to me that I didn’t understand. So this was the version of her he got to see every day, lucky bastard. My gaze shifted to Adrian, and for a brief second, our eyes met. There was something in his stare, sharp and possessive. I made my way towards them. “Amber,” I called, my voice calm but deliberate. She turned, and just like that, her expression softened. “Richard.” There it was again, that smile. I smiled slightly. “You look stunning.” And I meant it. For a second, I wished I was the one standing beside her and not him, I don’t think he deserves her. **** The charity event dragged on longer than expected. Speeches, donations, polite applause. Finally, the music started. People began to move towards the dance floor. I could see her try to step away so I made a go for it. “May I have this dance?” I asked, extending my hand. She hesitated but just for a second then nodded. “Sure.” She was lost in the music, she danced like she and the music were one, with her hips swaying to each beat the music gave. I liked it. I leaned in slightly, lowering my voice. “You know, if you ever get tired of working for him….” I didn’t get to finish because suddenly she was pulled away. Adrian’s POV I saw it, every second of it. The way he walked up to her, the way she smiled at him which she hadn’t done, at least to me since today. The way she said yes not minding if I sat there with her. My jaw tightened as I watched her place her hand in his. I stayed where I was, drink in hand, pretending not to care. But I did, more than I should. I couldn’t look away from her, the way she moved, it wasn’t intentional but it didn’t matter. The soft sway of her hips, the way her body fit so perfectly against his. The way she looked at him and blushed as he whispered to her ears. And it was driving me insane, my grip tightened around the glass. Before I could stop myself, I set it down and moved. My hand around her wrist, pulling her into me. And then, my lips were on hers. I knew I was being reckless plus we were in public too but it didn’t matter anymore, she was kissing me back. And for that moment, she was mine. Just as swiftly as the kiss happened, as if realizing the situation, she pushed me aside and ran away. I didn’t go after her, I just stood there trying to understand what I had just done. Everyone eventually resumed their dancing and from the corner of my eye, I could still see Richard staring at her retreating figure. My hand dropped slowly to my side, this time I knew I had crossed a line and for the first time in a long time, I didn’t know how to fix it. Ambers POV Richard pulled me gently into the dance floor, his hand resting lightly on my waist, It felt, good and easy. “You seem different tonight,” he said softly. “Do I?” I asked, “Yeah,” he smiled. “More gorgeous.” I let out a small laugh. “Maybe you didn’t notice me well enough” “Is that so?” he asked, his gaze searching mine. “You know, if you ever get tired of working for him….” He didn’t get to finish his statement when I felt a pair of arms on my waist. It felt familiar. “Adrian…” I didn’t finish because his lips were already on mine. My mind went blank, the world around us disappeared. All I could think of were his lips. The kiss was intense and dominating and before I could stop myself, I kissed him back. It felt good more like something I had always wanted. The encounter was short lived when I began hearing murmurs from all angles and camera shuttering then reality hit, I was on the dance floor. I pulled away abruptly, my chest rising and falling. “What are you doing?” I whispered, my voice shaking. I didn’t wait for an answer, I couldn’t. I turned and ran.Amber’s POV I didn’t stop running until I got to Vee’s place. My chest was rising and falling all at the same time. My mind still spinning from everything that had just happened. The kiss, the cameras and him. “Amber?” Vee’s voice came from behind me, laced with concern. “What happened? You look a mess.” I turned to her, and just like that, everything came crashing down. “He kissed me,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. Her eyes widened. “Who?” “Adrian.” “What? Why? What happened?” I sank into the couch, running my fingers through my hair. “In front of everyone and the press too. Richard and I were dancing and all of a sudden, he just…he just pulled me and kissed me like…” I trailed off. “Like what?” she pressed. I swallowed. “Like he was trying to claim me or something.” Vee stared at me for a moment, then sat beside me. “Claim you ? Okay and what did you do, you ran?” “Yes, that was all I could do.” She tilted her head slightly. “Did you push him away immediat

Adrian’s POVI glanced at my watch and only then did I realize how late I had stayed up.I stepped out of the study and was met with silence. The kind that didn’t just sit in a room, it was suffocating. Ever since that morning, she had been avoiding me.Not in an obvious way, Amber was smarter than that. She still did her job, perfectly to the core. Every file in place, every schedule updated, every task executed without a single complaint. But she wouldn’t speak to me, not unless it was necessary. No small talk, no warmth. I didn’t know why that bothered me.I walked past the dining area and paused, dinner was neatly placed on the table, covered. More like she knew I would take forever to come out. I exhaled slowly, pulling the chair back. I didn’t know why I lashed out that way or maybe I did.I hated being seen like that, vulnerable and weak. And she saw it, worse, she stayed.Which meant she was also the reason I had slept peacefully for the first time in years. That didn’t sit
Amber’s POVHearing him address me like that did something to me and I wasn’t sure why especially when he put his arms over my shoulders. He never behaved that friendly with me since I have known him so why now. Even after I explained how I knew him, it still felt like he wasn’t satisfied, more like he doubted me and that was when I remembered. Vee mentioned that they were rivals and my boss just saw me being friendly with his rival. Great, just great Amber. Back home, I tried to shake off the tension. Cooking was my comfort, my way of moving past everything. If not that I needed a stable income, I would have opened a restaurant but I didn’t have a sponsor so I settled for the available. Making my way to his study, “Dinner’s ready,” I called.“I don’t remember asking you to cook, Amber.” He said with raised brows. “I just thought you needed something to eat since you haven’t had any and don’t worry, it’s not poisoned.”“You think am scared of poison?” He scoffed. “I just don’t li
Amber’s POVThe first day at work felt heavier than I expected. My outfit, the only decent clothes that seemed harmless at least to me, didn't sit well with some people. Not that I cared, I just wanted to make a good impression with the people I would be working with but the whispers started the moment I stepped into the office.“They’re really letting anyone in these days,” one woman said with disgust shown all over her face. “Did she even try? That outfit, really?” another sneered. I kept my head high, walking with my confidence and pretending not to hear. Pretending became an art over the years. But someone had heard. And it wasn’t just anyone.“Amber,” a voice cut through the murmur, low and angry. I looked up to find Adrian standing there, eyes sharp like they were boring into my soul. “You are not going to a meeting dressed like that.”I swallowed, keeping my composure. The look on his face was filled with irritation. His tone was demeaning and full of that arrogant authority
Amber’s POV By the time I got home, my head was a mess. Everything felt unreal. Last night, the interview. Him. Adrian Volkov, my boss. I pushed the door open and barely stepped inside when Vee appeared in front of me. “Amber!” she grabbed my arms. “Where have you been? Do you know how worried I was?” I let out a breath. “You might want to sit down for this.” Her eyes lit up instantly. “That bad or that good?” “Both.” That was all it took. We were on the couch in seconds. “Start talking,” she said, practically vibrating with excitement. I hesitated for a second. Then I said it. “I didn’t come home last night.” “Well, I know that’s why I was worried. What happened last night? What were you…” Vee froze. Then slowly, a grin spread across her face. “No way.” “Yes way.” “Amberrrr!” she squealed, hitting my arm. “You did not!” “I did.” “With who?!” I ran a hand through my hair. “That’s where it gets complicated.” “Complicated how?” I looked at her. “The man from
