MAY

I took a deep breath. I knew what would happen if I followed Nicholas into the room now. He would probably shout and nag about my decision until his lungs expired. Well, what could I do? He was obviously desperate and he had the need to protect my baby. His protectiveness was cool but not when it conflicted with my decisions.

“It appears my young master is angry…” Mama muttered.

“I can tell,” I replied. “That’s why I’m still here even though he wants me to come to our room.”

“Are you scared of him?” Mama asked calmly. She looked into my eyes like some fortune teller possessed by ten spirits.

“I’m not scared of him. I know he will never hurt me, not while I carry his precious child,” I replied.

“You don’t understand him, I guess,” Mama sighed. “I don’t know what reputation he has in the public but as someone that watched him grow, I can tell you that he isn’t that bad a person. If you think he will hurt you after giving birth to his child, I will be very disappointed in you.”

Mama looked like she was in pain. She sat down beside me and I took a deep breath.

“What should I do?” I asked her.

“Go and meet him. You didn’t explain the details of the matter to me but you owe him an explanation. I believe he is a reasonable man. He cares about that baby you’re carrying. Remember that!” Mama told me carefully. I nodded and smiled at her. Afterwards, I left the sitting room. I was almost in our room when I remembered I forgot to pause the movie I was watching. Part of me contemplated going back to pause it before I missed too many scenes. I was going to turn back when Nicholas appeared before me.

“Where are you going again? Did you forget the way to our room?” He asked. I put on a big smile and walked into our room. He followed me and locked the door after he entered. I wouldn’t lie, my heart skipped a beat. What was he trying to achieve by locking me in a room with me?

I got uncomfortable, I mean it.

“So you…” Nicholas started.

“Let me explain!” I interrupted with my right hand raised. Nicholas said nothing for a few seconds. He seemed to be thinking.

“Go ahead. Keep it short and simple!” Nicholas told me. I stood up from the bed I was sitting on and Nicholas went to the exact spot. I stood before him and it felt like those days in high school when I stood before the audience and presented a speech.

“The culprits were my stepmother and stepsister. If I had exposed them, a huge scandal would occur regarding my family and I don’t want that. It might be the end of my family name. It will affect the hospital as well,” I told him carefully. My heart was thumping for a reason I didn’t know. Was it fear or something else?

“Okay,” Nicholas didn’t sound surprised. “You care more about that family business than your unborn child?”

“No, that’s not it. I went over to the family house and warned them never to try such a thing again. They won’t do it again, the family’s name won’t be smeared, and everyone is happy,” I replied pleasantly. Nicholas’s facial expression didn’t change. His calmness made me afraid. It also felt as if he was intentionally making me anxious.

“I understand…” Nicholas stood up and began to leave.

“That’s all?” I asked, stunned by what just happened.

“Yes,” Nicholas replied. “But tell your stepmother and stepsister than the next time they try such, they will deal with me instead of you. I used to date an actress. She had this diehard fan who seemed obsessed with her. He was like a stalker. He attacked her when he found out she was dating me. Do you know what I did with him afterwards?”

“I’m not curious,” I answered but that was a lie. I wanted to know badly.

“My men abducted him and beat him up three times a day for thirty days. He had two slices of bread a day. They force-fed him when he didn’t want to eat. You know how? They chewed the bread and spat it in his mouth!” Nicholas said, his eyes glaring.

I cringed. Now I really didn’t want to hear anymore.

“But those first thirty days were good days for him…” Nicholas continued.

“I don’t want to know!” I shouted. However, he didn’t stop.

“He ended up in a mental hospital afterwards. He is still in one till date. If he ever recovers, which I doubt, he will never try it again. That is how I teach people lessons,” Nicholas told me. “I have people willing to do the dirty job for me. I have money and I know how to use it to get what I want. Make sure you tell your family that if they mess with me, they will have themselves to blame.”

I said nothing. I watched as Nicholas changed his clothes in the same room with me. He didn’t mind being naked before me so I didn’t let it bother me as well. Rather than look away, I stared at his body instead. When he was done, he stared at me too.

“Let’s have dinner together,” Nicholas told me. “I’m sure Mama has finished the preparations by now.”

“You should shower first,” I walked up to him. He was wearing a T-shirt now. I felt like removing two buttons and touching his chest. He was well built and so, I desired to touch him.

“Do I smell badly?” Nicholas asked as he moved from me. He didn’t give me the chance to do what I wanted.

“Yes,” I replied while frowning.

“I don’t care. Dinner first, every other thing can come after,” Nicholas winked at me. He unlocked the door and went out first.

Somehow, I felt he wasn’t that bad. Mama was right.

May's POV There was something about Susan that I couldn't figure out. She didn't give me those deep, playful expressions of hers and it bothered me. However, I concluded that meeting with my stepmother would have caused it. She must have been so nervous. Mama came into the room, wearing a smile as usual. "The meal is ready, Miss. Shall I escort you?" Mama offered. "Don't worry, Mama," I replied. "I will take my friend by myself. You should go and rest for now." Mama turned towards Susan,"You are the best friend of the lady of the mansion. Please make sure to feel at home and enjoy your stay here." "It will be a short one, ma'am," Susan replied. "I will leave after lunch." "Why?" I touched Susan's shoulder lightly. "If you are here, just stay with me till evening. I will get the driver to take you home." "I'm sorry," Susan managed to smile. "I have some papers I need to finish working on. They are research papers and they need to be submitted soon." I nodded in accepta

Susan's POV I stared at Sherlyn. She had a smile on her face and it felt as if I was giving her exactly what she wanted. I had to stop being uneasy. If I continued like this, it would be the same as giving her hints about what I really wanted. "May is a good friend..." I began to say. "She won't treat me as a slave of hers. In fact, she treats no one like they are slaves. You shouldn't use that line." "I know you have big dreams," Sherlyn told me calmly. "You studied medicine and surgery for many years in the university. You started at our hospital as a resident for four years and now, you are a fellow. Next year, you are supposed to clinch the professor's position and be an official staff member. Life would get really rosy when that happens." "What about that?" I asked feigning ignorance. "I am sure you won't give up your dreams just to become a doctor nobody knows at your friend's house," Sherlyn continued. "May is known for being Nicholas's wife but do you think she will be sa

Sherlyn The hospital's chief executive officer was right in front of me. His name was Roberts and he has been in the position since the time of my husband. I was seated while he stood. He was a tall man with a beastly aura. "I deserve an explanation for what happened yesterday, don't I?" I asked him calmly. "I am sorry, ma'am," He replied. "Stop it!" I shouted angrily. "I need an explanation rather than an insincere apology. How on earth could the VIP room be accessed forcefully. Is that the kind of system we are building? Where is the hospital's pride as the best hospital in the country?" He said nothing. He must have thought this was his best option. However, it made me angrier. "Do you know why I didn't fire you even though you were fiercely loyal to my husband?" I asked him carefully. "I'm not sure..." He muttered. "However, I think it might be because I am good at my job." "Exactly," I replied with a smirk on my face. "I fired almost every executive that was loyal to Marc

MAY What was that incident? Was it related to Nicholas's nightmare? I turned towards Mama, searching for answers. However, she looked away. I touched her shoulder lightly and looked into her eyes. "I need to know the problem if I am going to help Nicholas," I told her carefully. "He slept well last night in my arms. However, that would work only when I'm there. If you want him to sleep peacefully, tell me the reason. I will help him." "I have no doubt you can help him," Mama muttered. "It's an old matter and only a few people know it. It happened when he was ten years old and he has been traumatized by it since then. He had to see a psychiatrist for a while but he continued to have nightmares every night. I get worried about him every now and then due to that reason." "What happened?" I asked curiously. "It was an accident!" Mama replied. "He went driving with his parents and they got into an accident. Only Nicholas survived and he blames himself for what happened. He thinks

  • ACCIDENTAL SURROGATE FOR THE BILLIONAIRES   Chapter 26

MAY I knew exactly when he entered the room. I could tell he was being delicate so he wouldn't rouse me so I simply played along. I acted as if I was asleep. He went to shower and after, he literally crawled into bed with me. When it seemed as if he was asleep, I turned to look at him. He was particularly handsome when he was asleep. I turned to sleep only to hear him jump out of bed in a few minutes. I turned out of concern and by the time I did, he was sitting at a corner in the bed. It had only been fifteen minutes when he slept off. How could nightmares come already? "Do you have nightmares every night?" I asked as I touched his shoulder. He turned back to look at me and took a deep breath. "Go to bed," He told me. He stood up and walked to the door. I sat up quickly. "Where are you going?" I asked him. "I want to grab a bottle of water. Go to bed, May," He told me. "I have water here," I pointed at the table. "Drink that and join me in bed." Nicholas sighed. "Just go to b

NICHOLAS It was eerie and that was the exact impression I wanted to leave in Charles's heart. I could see him shaking out of fear. He was right to do that. "Please don't kill me..." He muttered with his voice quivering. "I won't tell anyone about this. I won't report to the police that you kidnapped me. I beg you. I will do whatever you want me to." "Is that so?" I laughed. "You have seen many movies, it seems. I haven't seen as many as you would have so I will ask you this. What happens to the victim when he sees his kidnapper's face?" "I promise I will tell nobody. Just spare my life!" He begged. I smiled and stood up from my chair. I walked behind him and slowly touched his shoulders. He was tied so he couldn't move but I could tell that he was out of breath. "I am not a kidnapper for ransom as you already know," I began. "You have the guts to whisper terrifying things into the ears of my wife and that's why you are here.""Te... Terrifying things?" He stammered. "You see, Ch
