MAY

I knew exactly when he entered the room. I could tell he was being delicate so he wouldn't rouse me so I simply played along. I acted as if I was asleep. He went to shower and after, he literally crawled into bed with me. When it seemed as if he was asleep, I turned to look at him. He was particularly handsome when he was asleep. I turned to sleep only to hear him jump out of bed in a few minutes. I turned out of concern and by the time I did, he was sitting at a corner in the bed. It had only been fifteen minutes when he slept off. How could nightmares come already?

"Do you have nightmares every night?" I asked as I touched his shoulder. He turned back to look at me and took a deep breath.

"Go to bed," He told me. He stood up and walked to the door. I sat up quickly.

"Where are you going?" I asked him.

"I want to grab a bottle of water. Go to bed, May," He told me.

"I have water here," I pointed at the table. "Drink that and join me in bed."

Nicholas sighed.

"Just go to bed. Stop worrying about me!" Nicholas told me firmly.

"Who told you I was worrying about you?" I asked him naturally. "I am just afraid of sleeping alone. It's a cold night, you know."

From his facial expression, I could tell he knew I was only making an excuse. However, he came back nonetheless. He drank from the bottle on the table and sat beside me on the bed.

"I will watch you sleep," He told me.

"Why won't you sleep?" I asked him as I laid down properly. I was staring at him as if there were answers written on his face.

"I have terrible nightmares every night," He replied. "Even if I sleep right now, those nightmares will come to haunt me again. I don't want them so I will just watch you sleep."

"For the whole night?" I asked and my eyes fell on the wall clock.

"Who knows?" He smiled.

"Are the nightmares frightening?" I asked.

"They are," He replied.

"Do they make you afraid?" I muttered.

"Go to bed," Nicholas told me. "For my own sake."

I held onto him and made him lie down too. He hugged him closely like a mother hen to her chick. I thought he would push me away but he didn't. Instead, he came even closer, his head on my chest. I stroked his hair slowly and he closed his eyes.

"I will put you to bed..." I muttered.

"It feels warm. So warm," He snuggled even closer. I smiled at him. It felt warm too.

**

The alarm woke me up the next morning. I opened my eyes only to find out I had been cuddling with Nicholas the whole night. He looked so soundly asleep and for the first time, I saw his face so closely in the morning. Every morning, I used to see him coming out of the bathroom. This was a new one.

I smiled. I was tempted to use the 'sleeping beauty' line. After all, my contracted husband was a beauty, wasn't he?

There was a knock at the door and before I could respond, the door opened. Mama came inside.

"Young master, you..." Mama muttered before she saw us cuddling. "Oh, I'm sorry."

She turned to leave but that woke up Nicholas. He turned to look at her and I let him go as well. Nicholas sat up and stretched.

"You are here so early in the morning..." Nicholas muttered.

"I'm sorry," Mama replied. "I was just surprised when the maids claimed they hadn't seen you all morning. I thought you didn't sleep at home."

"Right!" Nicholas smiled. "It's been a while since I woke up late, hasn't it?"

"Of course, it's been years. I feel guilty for waking you up..." Mama muttered weakly.

"Good morning!" I interrupted. Mama smiled at me. She left almost immediately. Nicholas turned to see me and now, I felt nervous. Mama's presence had been the saving grace since. Nicholas stood up awkwardly and muttered 'good morning'. He literally escaped into the bathroom afterwards.

Why wasn't he making mention of how he acted last night? He came so close for a cuddle like an emotionally wrecked guy. It made me feel as if he had missed motherly love. I knew that feeling since I grew up without a mother as well.

But he slept soundly after all. I was happy and proud of myself. I had to snap out of my silly thoughts. Maybe this was happening because of my pregnancy. Was it my hormones?

**

"Breakfast is quite intentional today," I stared at the meal before me. It was like a combination of things I didn't like.

"The theme is healthy breakfast, Miss!" Mama told me excitedly. "Or shall I call you madam? You are now madam of the mansion."

"Let's stick to Miss. I am just twenty years old," I muttered.

"Alright, Miss," Mama began. "As you can see, you have soft-boiled eggs before you. It is fully cooked and it'll help your baby's brain development. There is whole grain toast with avocado, grilled tomatoes and mushrooms, basked beans, chicken sausages, fresh fruit medley, and pasteurized fresh orange juice. Bon appétit, miss!"

I sighed.

Mama sat on the chair beside me and looked at me curiously. I could tell she had something to say.

"What is it?" I muttered right before I began eating.

"What I saw this morning..." Mama told me. "It was real, wasn't it?"

"What did you see?" I decided to play dumb.

"You know what I'm talking about. Both of you were cuddling in bed," Mama shrieked excitedly. "I was worried that both of you weren't getting along. It's a big relief."

"Cuddling doesn't mean we are close," I replied halfheartedly.

"I doubt it! He even woke up late. He hasn't slept so soundly since that incident..." Mama told me convincingly.

"That incident?" I was curious.

Mama looked away. I wondered why.

May's POV There was something about Susan that I couldn't figure out. She didn't give me those deep, playful expressions of hers and it bothered me. However, I concluded that meeting with my stepmother would have caused it. She must have been so nervous. Mama came into the room, wearing a smile as usual. "The meal is ready, Miss. Shall I escort you?" Mama offered. "Don't worry, Mama," I replied. "I will take my friend by myself. You should go and rest for now." Mama turned towards Susan,"You are the best friend of the lady of the mansion. Please make sure to feel at home and enjoy your stay here." "It will be a short one, ma'am," Susan replied. "I will leave after lunch." "Why?" I touched Susan's shoulder lightly. "If you are here, just stay with me till evening. I will get the driver to take you home." "I'm sorry," Susan managed to smile. "I have some papers I need to finish working on. They are research papers and they need to be submitted soon." I nodded in accepta

Susan's POV I stared at Sherlyn. She had a smile on her face and it felt as if I was giving her exactly what she wanted. I had to stop being uneasy. If I continued like this, it would be the same as giving her hints about what I really wanted. "May is a good friend..." I began to say. "She won't treat me as a slave of hers. In fact, she treats no one like they are slaves. You shouldn't use that line." "I know you have big dreams," Sherlyn told me calmly. "You studied medicine and surgery for many years in the university. You started at our hospital as a resident for four years and now, you are a fellow. Next year, you are supposed to clinch the professor's position and be an official staff member. Life would get really rosy when that happens." "What about that?" I asked feigning ignorance. "I am sure you won't give up your dreams just to become a doctor nobody knows at your friend's house," Sherlyn continued. "May is known for being Nicholas's wife but do you think she will be sa

Sherlyn The hospital's chief executive officer was right in front of me. His name was Roberts and he has been in the position since the time of my husband. I was seated while he stood. He was a tall man with a beastly aura. "I deserve an explanation for what happened yesterday, don't I?" I asked him calmly. "I am sorry, ma'am," He replied. "Stop it!" I shouted angrily. "I need an explanation rather than an insincere apology. How on earth could the VIP room be accessed forcefully. Is that the kind of system we are building? Where is the hospital's pride as the best hospital in the country?" He said nothing. He must have thought this was his best option. However, it made me angrier. "Do you know why I didn't fire you even though you were fiercely loyal to my husband?" I asked him carefully. "I'm not sure..." He muttered. "However, I think it might be because I am good at my job." "Exactly," I replied with a smirk on my face. "I fired almost every executive that was loyal to Marc

MAY What was that incident? Was it related to Nicholas's nightmare? I turned towards Mama, searching for answers. However, she looked away. I touched her shoulder lightly and looked into her eyes. "I need to know the problem if I am going to help Nicholas," I told her carefully. "He slept well last night in my arms. However, that would work only when I'm there. If you want him to sleep peacefully, tell me the reason. I will help him." "I have no doubt you can help him," Mama muttered. "It's an old matter and only a few people know it. It happened when he was ten years old and he has been traumatized by it since then. He had to see a psychiatrist for a while but he continued to have nightmares every night. I get worried about him every now and then due to that reason." "What happened?" I asked curiously. "It was an accident!" Mama replied. "He went driving with his parents and they got into an accident. Only Nicholas survived and he blames himself for what happened. He thinks

NICHOLAS It was eerie and that was the exact impression I wanted to leave in Charles's heart. I could see him shaking out of fear. He was right to do that. "Please don't kill me..." He muttered with his voice quivering. "I won't tell anyone about this. I won't report to the police that you kidnapped me. I beg you. I will do whatever you want me to." "Is that so?" I laughed. "You have seen many movies, it seems. I haven't seen as many as you would have so I will ask you this. What happens to the victim when he sees his kidnapper's face?" "I promise I will tell nobody. Just spare my life!" He begged. I smiled and stood up from my chair. I walked behind him and slowly touched his shoulders. He was tied so he couldn't move but I could tell that he was out of breath. "I am not a kidnapper for ransom as you already know," I began. "You have the guts to whisper terrifying things into the ears of my wife and that's why you are here.""Te... Terrifying things?" He stammered. "You see, Ch
