GABRIELLE’S POV

I stared at my reflection in the mirror the next morning.

My under eyes were a little bit swollen but aside from that, I looked perfect. Not glamorous or anything like that. I just looked normal.

I made a promise not to dwell on what happened last night but I won’t forget it. I won’t forget how cold and nonchalant he sounded.

I’d remember it every time I see him.

Hopefully.

When I went downstairs, Susan was already finishing up with her cleaning. I poured myself a cup of coffee, trying to ignore the tight knot in my chest.

Last night replayed in my mind in tiny, jagged pieces—his lips, his hands on my skin, and the way his voice had been so cold.

I couldn’t make sense of it, and I wasn’t sure I wanted to.

Susan glanced up from the counter. “Good morning, Mrs. Gravari. Did you sleep well?”

I forced a small smile. “As well as I could.”

She smiled. “I’m happy you did because in a few minutes, Lila will be here. She has a lot of energy, that

DAMON’S POV I had never been desperate. At least, not since it all happened. But as I sat in this club, drinking and discussing a very important topic, I realized I was desperate to leave. Desperate to go home. Fiorella was sitting a few distance from me, drinking and dancing with some girls I didn’t recognize. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and checked the live camera footage. Gabrielle was in bed, going through her phone and drinking directly from a bottle of wine. Why was she drinking? Was it because of what I said last night? Fuck. Did she visit Emily again or did that bastard, Jared, reach out to her again? My fist clenched instinctively. I knew I should have killed that bastard when I had the chance. It was one of the things I regret. “I’m so sorry about that,” Antonio’s voice pulled me out of my head. I kept my phone back. “No, you’re not. Part of you hoped he had succeeded in killing Gabrielle.” He chuckled, taking a puff from his ci

GABRIELLE’S POV I pushed the door to Lila’s room open and I found her sitting on the bed with a small coloring book. She raised her head, saw me and sighed. “What do you want?” Her little sigh shouldn’t have hurt as much as it did, but it sliced straight through me anyway. I stepped inside slowly, keeping my voice soft. “I just wanted to check on you. That’s all.” She didn’t look back at me. “I’m fine.” Her crayon pressed harder into the page, the wax smearing into a mess of purple. Lila was angry at me because of whatever Anya planted in her head. It was obvious Anya was still hung up on Damon. She had no idea I could make him feel his emotions, so why was she bothered about my relationship with him? Did he say something to her? I moved closer. “I missed you while you were gone.” She paused for half a second, just long enough for me to see she heard me, then she shrugged. “Okay.” I sat on the edge of the bed, leaving space between us. “Did something happen? O

GABRIELLE’S POV I wiped my face even though the tears were already dry. “You shouldn’t look at me like that. I’m a mess.” “You’re not,” he said quietly. I lowered my gaze. The exhaustion from crying made my voice small. “I didn’t think you would come home this early.” “I told you I’d be back,” he replied as he sat beside me on the floor. The warmth of his words hurt in a way I couldn’t explain. My throat tightened again as he took my hand and lifted it into his lap. His thumb brushed over my knuckles lightly. “Did you eat?” he asked. “No.” He exhaled. “You need to eat.” “I wasn’t hungry.” “You still need to eat.” He stood up and offered his hand. I sighed. “Damon, I’m tired.” “I didn’t ask if you were tired,” he said. “I asked you to get up.” I frowned a little, but I took his hand anyway. He pulled me to my feet without giving me a chance to hesitate. “You’re going to eat,” he said. “Even if it’s just a few bites.” “I don’t want—” “You w

DAMON’S POV I stood by the window watching the sun set. I was done with all my meetings except the most important one. The door opened and I didn’t need to turn around to know it was Beatrice. “Oh, my sweet boy,” Beatrice cooed, the way she always did when she wanted something. “One of your errand boys told me you wanted to see me. I came as fast as I could.” I slowly turned around. She stepped closer. “You have never sent for me before now. What’s wrong?” “Take a seat,” I said coldly. She hesitated, staring at me with a confused expression before sitting. “Can you please stop with the suspense? What happened?” “You tell me,” I responded. “Tell me what happened to Gabrielle in the powder room.” Her face paled. “Oh, that? Nothing happened. We just talked and that was it. What are you talking about?” I turned to face the window again because the sight of her pretending to be innocent was getting on my nerves. “Whatever she said happened is a lie,” she continu

GABRIELLE’S POV I couldn’t tell if Emily was feigning innocence or if she was really fucked up in the head. My chest squeezed again. “Why? Have you forgotten you planned to kill me and take my inheritance with your loser boyfriend? And have you forgotten how you almost shot me at the penthouse?” She took a step forward. “I’m so sorry, Gabby. You made me miserable growing up. Everyone loved you more, including Father. You were the perfect child and I was a mess. So I decided to be different and hate you because no one else would.” My jaw dropped at her words. She continued. “In a way, Father and the rest of them are to blame for everything. If they had loved me more I wouldn’t have been jealous of you my entire life.” I wanted to pull my hair out of frustration. “Other people are to blame for your actions?” I scoffed. “Enough with the victim mentality, Emily. You’re pure evil. I did nothing but be a good child while you snuck out and stole and brought home bad grades
