Spring 2005
"I love the rains. They are so beautiful." This was what she thought every time it rained. As she watched the water falling incessantly, she gave a happy smile and sipped at her hot chocolate. "This is the best life ever! Drinking hot chocolate, reading your favourite Pride and Prejudice and watching the water, fall in droplets, while sitting at the window.
Just as her eyes turned back to her book, Faith heard her mother calling out," Fifi! Have you set the table and finished the preparations? The guests will be here any minute!"
With a huff, Faith placed her book on the side and picked up her chocolate mug before going down the stairs. "Mama! Who are they and why do they have to stay with us?"
Faith actually loved having guests staying over but not when they ruined the perfect weather for reading! And especially not when they were almost strangers!
"Hey! It's my best friend you are talking about! I have never stopped from having Grace stay over, have I?" Faith's mother replied with her hands on her hips.
Frowning, Faith stared," Well, Grace coming over does not need us to take out our best crockery, Mama! Anyways, you said her son is going to move to this place for his graduate studies. So does that mean he will be moving here?"
"No, silly! Adi has not really decided if he wants to move here. It is why Aunt Tori and he are coming. They want to check out the campus and other things. Of course, the boy is so brilliant, that he has already received offers from all over the country. Tori said that he does not want to go abroad but she does not want him to stay there. Too many distractions! So, young lady, you better be on your best behaviour when they come over!"
"When have you seen me behaving any less than that mama?"
Faith sipped at her hot chocolate and frowned. What bad behaviour? At sixteen, she was pretty sure, she was the only well-behaved girl in school! She studied well. She did not party, drink or do drugs. She was not dating anyone. And she was immersed in her books all day! She was the epitome of a good girl! For her, being bad meant maybe pulling an all-nighter to read some interesting novel! Probably a murder mystery or fantasy or a good old romance.
Soon, the bell rang and the most awaited guests arrived. Shaking her head, Faith watched her mother wipe her hands quickly before taking off her apron and rushing out of the kitchen. Well, she was not going to get into a welcome party. Guests and all were fine, but her mother was actually expecting her to show the guy around campus!
Well, her mother was the professor, not her! So why should she show the guy around the campus! Heck, she was not even a student. It was because her parents were both professors here so they had this small house to themselves! But no, her mother had decided to take a leave to spend some time 'catching up with her friend' while she was stuck with... whoever the 'so smart' guy was.
Rinsing her cup, she mumbled under her breath before quickly placing the mug on the rack to dry. Time to paste on a smile.
As soon as she turned, her breath stopped and the smile seemed to stick on her face. Woah! Too handsome dude alert. And he was smiling at her. Had a young Mr Darcy come to life? Or was it Mr Bingley? This was dangerous. She was comparing a real person to characters from a book. And she had a feeling that those two handsome characters would not match up to this reality. Pushing up her spectacles up her nose, Faith knew one thing, she needed to escape...
But the escape route was cut off as the boy was almost pushed aside and Faith was developed in a perfumed hug.
"My, my! Fifi, you have grown so big! You were a little baby when I last saw you! Adi, do you remember, you and Faith used to make up stories together whenever we came over for vacations and met them!"
"Yes, mom. I do remember! She used to talk about a white flying elephant and then we'd sleep together and think of flying away on the elephant."
The words 'sleep together' went around in her head like a gong! Did she use to sleep with such a handsome guy? Woah. Woah Woah. And that too when she was only three. Well, she was cute thirteen years ago so maybe that was fine.
While she was lost in thought, Aunt Tori and her mother had moved away, chattering like magpies while Adi walked to her with a smile and extended his hand," Hi Fifi. How are you doing?"
Faith looked down at the hand and frowned. She had a feeling that she might not be able to talk properly so she decided to speak as little as she could and touched her hand to his, before saying," My name is Faith. Welcome." Not giving him a chance to say more, Faith then left the open kitchen and raced up the stairs.
While Adi, who had been snubbed for no reason, looked down at his hand and wondered if his hand was dirty and that is why she had not even shook it.
Present Time:
With Grace sleeping next to her, Faith turned her head slowly and murmured, "Fifi" in a small voice as tears slipped down her cheeks. Fifi... the name she had not heard in so many years... The name she had once resented was now something that she would give the world to hear from his mouth.
“I hate the rains." Adi could not help but groan as he watched the torrent of water falling in front of him. His plan had been pretty simple. Have lunch, look around the campus and then leave immediately. But now that plan had been washed away by the pouring rain. "Well then, you shouldn't come here for your further studies. It rains six months out of twelve here." He heard the sly gloating voice and turned his head to see the girl. She sounded particularly pleased over his misery. Why was that? "Did I offend you by any chance, Fifi?" Faith widened her eyes at this. " Of course not! We have only met. How could you have offended me? What a question?" Shaking her head, she turned away and muttered under her breath," It's because of you that I cannot read and now I am imagining Mr Darcy with you face. " "You said something?" "No. Nothing." Seeing that she was not required to take the guest around the campus anymore, Faith decided
Adi Grenier smiled and helped his wife with the clip for the necklace and gently kissed her shoulder. "You look pretty, Kathy!" "Thank you Adi. It really is a beautiful gift." "I am glad you liked it. Let's leave Kathy. It is time to check out." As Adi turned to him Kathy could not help herself and caught his wrist, "Adi? Do we have to go back so soon? Can we not have a longer honeymoon?" Adi sighed. "Kathy. I already told you when you insisted on having the wedding this weekend that I would not be able to take a longer leave. I have important clients coming in this evening and I cannot wait longer." But Kathy did not let go. "Then next time. Can you promise me the next time, Adi? When this project is finished, then will you let me be with you longer?" Finally, Adi pulled his hand out of her grasp and answered coldly," Kathy. I already warned you that I don't like clingy women. You and I may be husband and wife but we are not in love and do not have normal marriage. So, it would
In the past: Faith could not have expected that she would not be able to keep her promise to Mr. Darcy once again as she stared down at the cards that she had been dealt. While yesterday the two had battled it out in the many games of chess, Faith had discovered that Adi was a good card player also. Thus, with the rains still going hard at it, she had asked if he would be willing to teach her. Cards had always fascinated her. But sadly the only game she did know to play was Speed. And she was pretty bad at it! Somehow, she always ended up remaining the last person, her cards still in hand. "So, which game do you want to learn?" "I don't even know the names of the games. Just teach me anything." Adi, stopping mid shuffle, looked at her in surprise. "How can you not know any game? Your father is an expert!" "And mother is of the firm opinion that girls should not gamble!" "Really? Aunty does not come across as old fashioned..." "She isn't in some things. But the ones she does bel
Andrew Heming sipped at his glass slowly as he listened to the private investigator give his report. It was certainly not what he had expected. His dear wife who was about to become his ex had been having the time of her life since serving him the divorce papers."So, she has not had any contact with anyone other than her best friend and her lawyer?""No, sir. Not even when she has gone out dancing and clubbing the only people are Miss Grace and Mrs Faith. There have been many times when men have tried to approach the two women but both have always been rejecting them.""I see. And what about Adi?"The private investigator frowned at the sudden question. They were discussing the man's wife, how did Adi Grenier come up in the conversation?"Sir? Mr Adi?""Hasn't she been in touch with Adi? It's been a while since Adi has returned from his honeymoon and even though he was busy with international clients, his project has been approved and he should have been relativel
"Faith! What a surprise seeing you here!" Faith turned around only to be hugged and surrounded by the smell of expensive perfume, almost immediately causing herself a headache. At the same moment, her eyes met Adi's before his gaze shifted away. Stepping back, she smiled at the two people before answering the woman," Kathy! It is a pleasant surprise seeing you here. How are you doing? No need to answer that. You are positively glowing after your marriage!" "Yes! Adi is treating me really well! Are you here to see Andrew? Should we have lunch together? After all, you two are good friends with my husband!" Faith raised an eyebrow towards Adi in question at this. His wife was not aware of her and Andrew's divorce discussions. With a shake of her head, Faith declined," Not today, I'm afraid. I am here to discuss my divorce with Andrew." It was at this moment that Adi Grenier finally spoke, " Are you not planning on reconciling?" Before Faith could answer the question the elevator doo
Adi twisted the fork in his hands as he thought of the time when Faith had agreed to marry Andrew. He was the one who had pushed her into Andrew's arms figuratively and that was his biggest regret now. It was his own cowardice that stared back at him every time he met them and saw her. He always thought to himself that he would be happy seeing her happy but every time he had seen her hold Andrew's hand and smile, he had only hated himself. Looking up, he saw that the restaurant was serving the Trifle Pudding today. The mere sight of the pudding took him back a few years ago. He had already moved onto the campus and taken to stay with Faith's family during the weekends. Though his coursework barely allowed him to take time off, he realized that he could not stay away for longer times as he would miss the homely feeling he had there. And thus he would pull all-nighters just so he would have the weekend free. Most weekends were spent at home playing cards or chess while sometimes he an
Andrew clenched his hands into fists when he heard what Faith had to say and asked slowly, "What do you mean Faith? Are you saying that you will falsely blame me for adultery? Or are you saying that you have committed..." His mind once again flashed back to her and Adi. Even though she had repeatedly told him that they were only friends, he had always felt insecure about the two's relationship because Adi had been the only guy friend in her life in the past. In fact, when Adi announced his marriage to Kathy, he had been the one who felt the biggest relief. He had thought that maybe now he could make progress with Faith without feeling insecure. But instead, Faith had served him with divorce papers...But what she said next made the ground beneath his feet shift and he could feel a sinking sensation overtake his body. "Would it be a false accusation Andrew? You know it well don't you? As for whether I have been true to you? Since the day I said yes to you I did not even think about any
Faith rubbed her forehead as she strode back towards her car. She should have known this would happen. Andrew was never willing to listen to her in the past. To him, just because he said everything would be alright, it should be. After all, the world revolved around him! And she had not even started to count the injustices and insults that he himself had meted out to her. A past memory flashed in her mind, Andrew screaming at her," Why did I have to get saddled with you?" Shaking her head, she opened her car door and was about to get in when her eyes met the man who stood on the opposite side. Seeing that he had her attention, the man angled his head slightly to the side saying nothing. In return, Faith nodded and got into the car, waiting. While she had been trying to not hate Andrew, her old feelings for Adi had kept rearing their head and she had come to a realization. To her, no one could compare to Adi. He would forever be the epitome of a perfect man to her. It was a realizatio
