LOGINHarlequin Frost is in an arranged marriage for two years when she overhears a conversation between her husband, Victor Cross, and his best friend, Liam. Victor admits he is going to ask her for a divorce. When he does tell Harley that he wants a divorce, she is nothing but cold and she lets him see her anger for the first time. Victor starts noticing sides of his wife that he never knew were there. Harley realizes that she has lost everything about herself just trying to be the kind of woman he could love. Victor swears she was hiding her true self while Harley insists, he would have seen these sides to her if he had attempted to get to know her. When his first love comes back to town, Victor tries to bully Harley into making concessions in their divorce agreement to try to hang on to Daya while Harley refuses to budge. When Victor's half-brother comes back from abroad, he takes an interest in Harley while Harley is just trying to concentrate on growing her jewelry design firm. She doesn't even notice that Victor's best friend and his half-brother are trying to get her attention until her best friends notice and point it out to her. Will Harley find love with Liam or Daniel? Or will she and Victor reconnect and try to make their relationship work?
View MoreI was just about to enter my husband’s office when I heard his voice through the door, “She’s okay, as far as housewives go, but not stunning enough to take to events.” I heard his best friend, Liam’s voice respond, “Are you crazy? Dude, I would kill for a wife like her. She’s beautiful, smart, and her life revolves around you. Sorry, but I think you’re going blind.”
I was trying to pull myself away from the door, then froze in place when I heard Victor reply, “Daya will be coming back soon. She’s the one I want. If my dad hadn’t insisted, I would’ve never married her.” Liam countered, “Everything you love on Daya is fake. Your wife is all natural and beautiful. You are making the biggest mistake of your life. Just let me know when you do it. I want to be there to help her heal.”
Victor growled, “Stay away from her.” Liam growled in return, “Try me. You may be stupid, but I’m not. I’m going to the bar. If you want to join me, I’ll see you there. If not, I’m still going.” I heard Liam step toward the door and I quickly walked around the corner trying to keep from breaking out into full on sobs. As Liam walked toward the elevator, I decided to go back to my desk.
Before I could make it to the elevator, I ran to the restroom and locked myself in a stall. I started crying uncontrollably until I felt like I could get to my desk without breaking down again. I walked to the sink and looked at my face in the mirror. My eyes were puffy as I splashed water on my face. I fixed my makeup and walked to my desk.
When I made it to my office, I shut my door and broke down again. I don’t understand why he still doesn’t want me. I have literally changed everything about myself to earn his love. I have loved him since I was twelve and we used to hang out together all the time. After high school, I went to college and earned my degree in fashion and jewelry design just to be able to work with him.
My name is Harlequin Frost. Those close to me call me Harley. Victor and I entered an arranged marriage, set up by his father. I knew Victor was against it, but I’m sure his dad refused to let him continue as CEO of their company if he didn’t do this.
When we got married, Victor insisted I keep my maiden name. He said he wasn’t ready for the world to know he was married. Therefore, we were never seen together in public or at work, he spoke about personal matters in code to keep everyone at work from finding out.
From the time we were kids all the way until the day we got married, he was nothing but good to me and we got along well. It seemed as soon as Victor had that ring on my finger, everything changed and I started living in my own private prison cell. On our wedding night, he took me to his condo and sighed, “Let me make this absolutely clear for you. I do not want the world to know we are married.
“We will not go anywhere together. You have your own car with a driver. His information is right there on the counter along with your own set of keys to the condo. Do not go anywhere without your driver.
“I will provide everything you will need, so you can quit working. You can concentrate on keeping our place clean and organized.” I interrupted him immediately, “I have a job and I will not stop working. There are only so many hours that I can clean this condo.
“I worked too hard on my education to stop working. You can just deal with that. I work at your company, so keeping an eye on me should be easy for you”.
He asked, “You can lose the smart-ass attitude. You are not the one in charge here nor are we equal. Are you going to be able to act as though you don’t know me?”
I nodded, “I’ve been ignoring you at work the entire time we were dating. I can keep my presence purely professional.” He nodded, “Okay.” I asked, “If you don’t like me, why did you ask me to marry you?”
He smiled, “Who said I don’t like you? I do love you. I just don’t want the world to know it. It’s better for my company for me to appear single. I will be making appearances at events and with my friends at bars. I do not want you there.” I waved that off, “I’m just fine with that. Just don’t come home drunk and want sex. I will not have rancid alcohol breath all over me.”
Now, two years later, Victor has taken over control of his dad’s company and we have successfully kept our marriage a secret. No matter how hard I have tried to make Victor happy, he is still indifferent to me. He hasn’t treated me badly, so I continue trying my hardest to please him and, possibly, get him to reciprocate my feelings.
Now I know his father is the reason he proposed. I don’t think he has any feelings for me. Theodore has been the only person in that family who I feel like I can trust. He has seen how Victor treats me and he keeps telling me, “I should have asked Daniel if he would marry you. At least he doesn’t lock his feelings away.”
When we stepped inside, Doctor Martin and I gasped as we looked at a huge open floor plan similar to the rest of the houses. There were two staircases; one that ended just to the left of the front door and one that ended to the left of the back door. Doctor Martin nodded, “I like the two sets of stairs. It makes it easier for the kids to go at their own speeds. I have a son who has run over his younger siblings more than once.”I laughed, “Well, he may still do it, but he may do it less now.” Doctor Martin laughed, “I really hope so. This looks like a house my kids would love.” I asked, “Is it a house you could love?” She looked me in the eyes and smiled, “I already love it and I haven’t even seen it all.” I laughed, “I’m sure the rest won’t let you down.”She sat on the huge sectional and smiled, “This is the perfect couch. It’s the right size too. I could see myself taking a nap here on my day off.” I chuckled, “Would you like to check out the kitchen?” She nodded, “Of course.” When
We took the elevator down to the first floor and walked to the back door and then outside. I knew she was taking us to the stables, and I could not wait to see it. Doctor Martin saw my excitement and asked, “Where are we headed?” I chuckled, “We are on our way to the stables.” She asked, “Animal therapy?” I nodded. She smiled, “I can’t wait to see it.” I chuckled, “I was thinking the same thing.”As soon as we reached the stable doors, Lori explained, “Inside this building is our animal therapy area. We have a therapist on staff who specializes in animal therapy for both children and adults.” Linda Jones asked, “Do you also have a trainer on staff?” I nodded, “We do. He actually sleeps in the stables at night. He wants his scent to be recognizable by all the animals.”Lori opened the barn doors and we all stepped inside. She yelled, “Goldie!” Just then, a beautiful Golden Retriever ran to Lori and sat at her feet. Lori smiled, “That’s a good girl.” She turned to us, “Goldie is a licens
When we stepped into the house, all we saw was a desk and a decorative wall behind it with an open door. Lori started, “This room is the front office. We decided to set it up this way to keep abusers from knowing this is a women’s shelter. The secretary knows how to greet people and tells them we are Runaway Angel Resort. She is also required to sign an NDA before she is told anything about the place.”Louis was the first to speak, “This looks like a hazard if an abuser happens to show up.” I smiled, “It could be, but the secretary is also specially trained in firearms safety and has a sharpshooter medal. She is also a former Tai Kwon Do instructor and an MMA fighter.”Louis chuckled, “Can you say overkill?” Everyone laughed until I responded, “We take the safety of our residents very seriously. Our secretary also goes with us if we need to take a couple residents to town.” His cheeks blushed, “I’m sorry, Harley. I truly was not meaning to sound pretentious. I was just trying to joke.
After a filling lunch, Daniel and I went to the garage and took the SUV to the clinic to pick up Dr. Martin. When she reached the vehicle, Daniel opened the back door to let her in. She thanked him as she sat and Daniel closed the door, then got in the front seat. I asked, “Are you ready to see the shelter?” She smiled, “I am. I would love to hear about it while we’re on our way there.”I smiled, “I decided on the name ‘Runaway Angel’. It’s not just a shelter, either. We have a therapist on staff who is trained in equine therapy. We also have horses who are trained to be therapy horses too. We have an exam room and office for a doctor, but honestly, our doctor that we had chosen decided she wanted to stay where she was.”Dr. Martin smiled, “First, I am absolutely in love with that name. It’s so appropriate yet obscure enough to throw off the general public. Second, I love the equine therapy idea. I think that form of therapy is amazing in getting people to open up. Third, if this place
The car ride on the way to the doctor’s office was one of comfortable silence. Daniel held me close the entire time and I was so grateful for it. He knew exactly what I needed to help my nerves. He kept his voice low and soothing as he comforted me, “It’s okay. It’s just a regular checkup. You need
I spent the entire day packing, and making sure everything was done before we left for the airport. When I had everything done, I got undressed and got in the shower. I took a quick shower and went to the closet. I found a very cute maxi dress. It was royal blue and the three-quarter length sleeves
We ladies just hung out for the rest of the day and just enjoyed each other’s company. We ate lots of snacks because Amy liked to make sure I had a variety in front of me. She never wanted me to get sick of any one certain snack. My problem was that I never got tired of anything, so I ate a little o
The next morning, I woke up much later than usual and Daniel had already left for work. I picked up my phone and found a text from Daniel, “Good morning, love. Sorry I had to leave early today. I wish I could be there with you today. I hope you will take it easy today. Dad is coming over this mornin
