Harlequin Frost is in an arranged marriage for two years when she overhears a conversation between her husband, Victor Cross, and his best friend, Liam. Victor admits he is going to ask her for a divorce. When he does tell Harley that he wants a divorce, she is nothing but cold and she lets him see her anger for the first time. Victor starts noticing sides of his wife that he never knew were there. Harley realizes that she has lost everything about herself just trying to be the kind of woman he could love. Victor swears she was hiding her true self while Harley insists, he would have seen these sides to her if he had attempted to get to know her. When his first love comes back to town, Victor tries to bully Harley into making concessions in their divorce agreement to try to hang on to Daya while Harley refuses to budge. When Victor's half-brother comes back from abroad, he takes an interest in Harley while Harley is just trying to concentrate on growing her jewelry design firm. She doesn't even notice that Victor's best friend and his half-brother are trying to get her attention until her best friends notice and point it out to her. Will Harley find love with Liam or Daniel? Or will she and Victor reconnect and try to make their relationship work?
View MoreI was just about to enter my husband’s office when I heard his voice through the door, “She’s okay, as far as housewives go, but not stunning enough to take to events.” I heard his best friend, Liam’s voice respond, “Are you crazy? Dude, I would kill for a wife like her. She’s beautiful, smart, and her life revolves around you. Sorry, but I think you’re going blind.”
I was trying to pull myself away from the door, then froze in place when I heard Victor reply, “Daya will be coming back soon. She’s the one I want. If my dad hadn’t insisted, I would’ve never married her.” Liam countered, “Everything you love on Daya is fake. Your wife is all natural and beautiful. You are making the biggest mistake of your life. Just let me know when you do it. I want to be there to help her heal.”
Victor growled, “Stay away from her.” Liam growled in return, “Try me. You may be stupid, but I’m not. I’m going to the bar. If you want to join me, I’ll see you there. If not, I’m still going.” I heard Liam step toward the door and I quickly walked around the corner trying to keep from breaking out into full on sobs. As Liam walked toward the elevator, I decided to go back to my desk.
Before I could make it to the elevator, I ran to the restroom and locked myself in a stall. I started crying uncontrollably until I felt like I could get to my desk without breaking down again. I walked to the sink and looked at my face in the mirror. My eyes were puffy as I splashed water on my face. I fixed my makeup and walked to my desk.
When I made it to my office, I shut my door and broke down again. I don’t understand why he still doesn’t want me. I have literally changed everything about myself to earn his love. I have loved him since I was twelve and we used to hang out together all the time. After high school, I went to college and earned my degree in fashion and jewelry design just to be able to work with him.
My name is Harlequin Frost. Those close to me call me Harley. Victor and I entered an arranged marriage, set up by his father. I knew Victor was against it, but I’m sure his dad refused to let him continue as CEO of their company if he didn’t do this.
When we got married, Victor insisted I keep my maiden name. He said he wasn’t ready for the world to know he was married. Therefore, we were never seen together in public or at work, he spoke about personal matters in code to keep everyone at work from finding out.
From the time we were kids all the way until the day we got married, he was nothing but good to me and we got along well. It seemed as soon as Victor had that ring on my finger, everything changed and I started living in my own private prison cell. On our wedding night, he took me to his condo and sighed, “Let me make this absolutely clear for you. I do not want the world to know we are married.
“We will not go anywhere together. You have your own car with a driver. His information is right there on the counter along with your own set of keys to the condo. Do not go anywhere without your driver.
“I will provide everything you will need, so you can quit working. You can concentrate on keeping our place clean and organized.” I interrupted him immediately, “I have a job and I will not stop working. There are only so many hours that I can clean this condo.
“I worked too hard on my education to stop working. You can just deal with that. I work at your company, so keeping an eye on me should be easy for you”.
He asked, “You can lose the smart-ass attitude. You are not the one in charge here nor are we equal. Are you going to be able to act as though you don’t know me?”
I nodded, “I’ve been ignoring you at work the entire time we were dating. I can keep my presence purely professional.” He nodded, “Okay.” I asked, “If you don’t like me, why did you ask me to marry you?”
He smiled, “Who said I don’t like you? I do love you. I just don’t want the world to know it. It’s better for my company for me to appear single. I will be making appearances at events and with my friends at bars. I do not want you there.” I waved that off, “I’m just fine with that. Just don’t come home drunk and want sex. I will not have rancid alcohol breath all over me.”
Now, two years later, Victor has taken over control of his dad’s company and we have successfully kept our marriage a secret. No matter how hard I have tried to make Victor happy, he is still indifferent to me. He hasn’t treated me badly, so I continue trying my hardest to please him and, possibly, get him to reciprocate my feelings.
Now I know his father is the reason he proposed. I don’t think he has any feelings for me. Theodore has been the only person in that family who I feel like I can trust. He has seen how Victor treats me and he keeps telling me, “I should have asked Daniel if he would marry you. At least he doesn’t lock his feelings away.”
When we got home, Amy had dinner ready for us. I smiled as soon as I got off the elevator, “Mmm… Roast with potatoes and carrots. Yum. I love comfort food.” Daniel laughed, “Are we becoming food driven?” I laughed, “The babies are causing me to be food driven. They’re turning me into a pig!” He laughed, “You’re not a pig, love. You are feeding three. You’re allowed to be hungry all the time.”We sat at the table and I was happy to see homemade dinner rolls with dinner. Daniel laughed at me as I relished every bite, closing my eyes and moaning at the taste. Daniel laughed, “Should I leave you with some privacy?” I laughed out loud, “Just kidding, babe. It just really tastes good.” He chuckled, “I know it does. I was kidding too.”We were in the middle of dinner when Daniel’s phone pinged with a text. He looked at his phone, “Lacey and Angela are on their way up.” I asked, “Since when do they text you and not me?” He laughed, “Since I was the one who asked them to come over to begin wit
When I got to the store, I unlocked the door and walked in. I walked around and looked at all of the items to be refurbished or repurposed. I smiled at all the possibilities. I heard the back door open and my contractor, Jessica or Jessie for short, walked in. She smiled, “Good morning, Harley. How are you feeling?” I smiled, “I’m okay. I was just looking over the stuff we brought from the storage lockers. How are you?”She smiled, “I’m feeling great. What do we have on the list for today?” I asked, “First off, I think we should do some smaller pieces to get out there. First, I would like you to sand these doors. I want to whitewash them, and then each pane of glass on them will be a picture frame. I would like to use two doors for each and put hinges on them big enough to let them stand together. Do you see where I’m going with it?”Jessie smiled, “This is going to be awesome! That would be a lot of pictures. Especially if you want to display pics on both sides. That’s thirty-two pic
When Daniel and I went to the storage lockers, we watched Jace and Tony carry a large wardrobe that I had restored to its original condition, down to the color. I smiled, at that piece, “I remember restoring that one. It was very rundown. The hinges had been ripped off the doors and one of the small drawers was in pieces. I had to put it all together, sand it down and get new hardware for it. I loved working on that one.”Daniel chuckled, “It’s good to see you remember each piece. It means you’re passionate about it.” I nodded, “I am very passionate about it. You’ve seen me at flea markets.” He laughed, “I have. I’m also very impressed at your negotiating skills and your vision for the stuff you buy.”I went to the locker with the unfinished pieces and I asked, “Would you please get those doors and windows?” He started picking them up, “What are you going to do with them?” I smiled, “You’ll see. I think you’ll like them. I need to stop at my favorite craft store on the way home too. I
I walked with Daniel, Victor and Theodore to the jewelry store. When we walked in, Victor immediately noticed a difference, “You’ve been working a lot.” I nodded, “I have. I’ve been working on items for the other shop during the day and the jewelry in the evening.”I walked into the safe and Theodore gasped, “Good grief, young lady. Have you been resting at all?” I nodded, “I have. I’ve also been having so much fun creating pieces for the other store. The jewelry making is calming for me. You have to have a steady hand with a lot of it, so it forces me to stay calm.”When I walked back out, I had the necklace on a special display and a box containing the matching earrings in my hands. I took it to the workbench and sat them down, “What do you think?” He touched the necklace, “Exquisite. I have a gown being shown at our next fashion show that this will match perfectly. Do you think we could do a contract where I can borrow some of your pieces for shows and photoshoots?”I nodded, “I’m
The next morning, I woke up extra early. I tried and failed to go back to sleep, so I got out of bed, took my shower, and dressed in a pair of sweats and a T-shirt until it was time to go to the other shop. I decided to make a pot of full-strength coffee, then sit on the couch and sketch some new jewelry designs. I was almost done with my first sketch of the day when my phone vibrated. It was a text from an unknown number. I opened it and the person asked, “Do you know what your fiancé was doing Monday? He was with me.” I looked at the picture and it was time and date stamped for Monday, but the time was during my doctor’s appointment and he never left my side all day that day.I just laughed as I looked at the picture and it was the back of a man with a similar build as Daniel’s, and hair the same color and style. The face of the woman was blurred out, but I’m sure Daniel might recognize her.I didn’t delete the text or the picture, because I wanted Daniel to look at it when he woke
I bought the building next to my shop the following day. It was perfect. The shop itself had plenty of floor space for all of the pieces that were complete, along with a few of the new pieces that I had completed during the week. I relied on Daniel, Jace and Tony for most of the heavy lifting. I only had to show them where to put them.I was able to hang the smaller pieces on the wall, while the larger mirrors needed to be hung by one of the guys. By the time it was done, I stood at the front door looking in and took a deep breath, “It looks perfect. I just need the business license and the sign out front and it will be done.”Lacey walked in the front door and immediately started jumping up and down and squealed loudly, “It’s so cute! This is going to be such a huge hit!” I smiled, “Thank you.” She asked, “So, tell me, why didn’t you think about doing this earlier? You’ve had a lot of this stuff sitting in that storage locker for at least a couple of years.” I shrugged, “I guess I di
