Chapter 45

TESSA

I could see how hard Dad tried to remain strong and composed, but as soon as he was just a step away from Mom, his guard came down. Dad let himself collapse into Mom's arms, who was just as stunned as I was. This was the first time we saw Dad revealing his vulnerable side to us.

"Take a deep breath, Rowan..." Mom leaned in and whispered while she gently ran her fingers through Dad's hair.

Blood dripped from the gashes on his temple, running down to his cheek. Mom cleaned it up.

"I failed," Dad whispered.

"No. Don't say it. We can get through this."

"No. This time I have failed you. My pack members... our family..."

I felt my hands tighten at that. I rip my eyes away from the scene. Seeing Dad in his weak state, and Mom, who felt just as lost, I couldn't contain my sadness.

I couldn't hold back my tears any longer. And I know if I stick around any longer, I'll end up crying my heart out. But I need to keep my strength up. For them. Someone has to hold it together.
