Lyra's Pov

The cold air brushed against my uncovered skin, the smell of earth heavy as I walked deep into the woods.

Despite Lucious' words, I felt a deep sense of unease, like everyone somehow had it out for me. I could feel their gaze when I passed by, their upturned lips every time I spoke.

At first, I had thought it to them being skittish around a new face, someone they didn't know whether to trust, but as the seconds turned into minutes and that into hours, I felt my body construct, my throat tightened with each breath and the need for air, louder than I'd ever felt.

I hadn't gone very far, my boots crushing against dead leaves when a deep voice filled with hostility stopped me.

“And where do you think you are going?”

I whipped around to find, a familiar woman looking back at me with barely concealed scorn, her arms holding a basket filled with nuts.

I frowned, staring at the woman I knew to be named Mara. I'd met her a few times and had heard Camille give her orders. She was also part of the rogues assigned to gathering and stocks.

Without waiting for my reply, she continued, voice sharp and condescending, “Look at you walking around these plains like you own it. Strutting around looking pretty.”

I raised my arms, “Look, I don't want any trouble. I was just taking a walk.”

“Trouble?” She repeated with a sneer, “With that face, you look exactly like trouble. I have no idea what Lucious sees in you.”

“That's not any of your business.” I snapped, taking offense at her words.

“Oh did I strike a nerve?” She leered, leaning against a tree, “So what? Are you going to run to him and tattle? You think you are better than any of us here?”

“That's absurd! I don't think that—”

“Well, you sure act like it.” She scoffed, pulling away like she was already bored with the conversation, and muttered, “That's probably why everyone is so wary of you.”

I eyed her slowly, voice low, “What are you talking about? I haven't done anything.”

“And that's exactly the point. Keep up whatever it is you are doing and they are going to attack you, one of these days.” She smirked, looking at me coldly.

I swallowed, irritation and fear brewing inside me. “If you have something to say, just say it. I don't understand…what did I do so wrong?”

She shrugged, “Who knows…and who cares. You reek of weakness Lycra –”

“It's Lyra—”

“And soon enough they are going to rip you apart.” She continued, ignoring my words.

“You'd better watch your back. Cause one of these days. Lucious won't be around to help you Ly…cra.”

I exhaled through my lips, fighting for a calm I didn't feel, “ What would you have me do then…how do I at least fend off the people that want to tear into me?”

She shuffled the basket between her hands and shrugged, her face blank, “Simply go back home.”

I flinched, shaking my head. “I can't do that.”

She tilted her head, giving me a long slow look, “Why? Have some over there wanted to take a bite from that pretty skin if yours?”

I frowned, “No. Not that it's any of your business. But I can't leave—”

“Then it's your funeral.” She snapped cutting me off, “You'd better start getting ready to fight to your last breath if you think you are going to survive here. Don't say I didn't warn you when you are attacked front, left, right, and center.”

“But that's not fair!” I argued, “I've done everything to fit in. I've tried to help, I've tried to get in your little circles even offering my expertise. What's so hateful about me that you aren't willing to give me a chance?”

She smirked, turning on her heels.

“Life's not fair, if all people knew this.”

I clenched my fingers, nails digging into the soft flesh. She was right, life wasn't fair. It didn't wait for me nor did it care about my feelings. I should know, after everything that has gone on at the pack, Kaels' betrayal, the pain of being discarded, life had told me everything I needed to know. It would fuck me over at the first chance to get and there was nothing I could do about it.

And that was why Maras' words rubbed off on me more fiercely. I didn't want to accept this, not when this was my last chance at a home, or a place to stay.

I knew I needed to get stronger, it I didn't know how, and here she was offering advice, what better way than to find out from an inner source. It wouldn't hurt I was sure. Even if the particular inner source clearly didn't like me.

Clenching down the feeling of unease, I reached out to stop her.

“Mara wait,” I called, grabbing her arm. She slapped my arms away, shooting me a vicious glare, I stepped back, my arms raised.

“I'm sorry…I didn't mean to make you angry.” I began, heart pounding, “It's just…I was wondering…”

“Spit it out already. Any more of your stuttering and I'll walk away.”

“I wasn't—no you are right. I'm sorry.”

“Stop apologizing. Pleading, begging, and thanking don't get you anywhere here.” She eyed me coldly, “except a knife between your ribs and your things stolen. Get your shit together.”

I nodded quickly,” You are right, I'm s—” She arched a mocking brow, and I shut my mouth.

Amused she placed her basket down slowly, arms crossed, “So what is it?”

“I know I don't belong here,” I started, lowering my voice, “but I really want to. Can you give me pointers? Tell me what I need to do to be accepted.”

Mara watched me closely for a few minutes, lips pressed into a firm line.

I shifted under the weight of her stare, ready to let her know not to worry, but before I could she said firmly.

“Nothing.”

I blinked, “What?”

“You want the truth? No one is ever going to accept you. Not now. Not ever.”

“But—”

“That's just the harsh reality. The sooner you accept it the easier for you,” she said, picking up her basket and turned.

Lyra’s POV. "I have been involved in a few fights in my life and I am not proud of everything that I have done but the only thing you can be rest assured of, is the fact that you would never be disappointed when it comes to me." Lucius told me.My eyes lingered on him, watching the once confident man look like he was trying so hard not to break down in my presence and I kind of understood it but at the same time, realized that he was fighting some battles that would never make any sense to me except he came out clean. "Of course you had to. How is that affecting you now?""Badly, a whole lot of people have different perception about me and as much as I would have loved for me to remain anonymous my past is finally catching up with me and I have to be at the center of it all making sure that everybody has a hand in this no matter what." He wasn't making any sense with his analogy and even though I wanted to believe him to some extent, I kind of felt like there was a little something

  • ALPHA KAEL'S REJECTION    CHAPTER 66

Kael's POV.My wolf led me to the plains, that was the only place that I could be able to get answers for what I was looking for and how long he was going to take for me to fathom a reasonable explanation and why she just disappeared. Selene must have been a bastard for thinking that you'll be able to make me convinced to do whatever she wanted and not what I truly wanted. How on Earth does she even think that it was possible? I had nothing to lose but she had everything and the entire world too. The father was not even as popular as he wanted to preserve his legacy and I was doing this simply because my pack members decided to go on a long journey to make sure that I was not doing anything against what was already in the works. I had nothing to lose nor gain, but now that Selene had spoken about it I was willing to abandon a few things to seek that girl out. She couldn't have been really far away or else I would have found her by now. I also didn't have anything to say apart fro

  • ALPHA KAEL'S REJECTION    CHAPTER 65

Lyra's POV.My first move was to comb the entire area making sure that I was able to drag the few things out."Don't you have a whole lot of things that you have to put into place before we start fighting against somebody that we know is going to prevail one way or the other?" It just didn't make sense to me no matter how much they were trying to go about it and paint it to be the real thing. I had already discovered a better way of handling the situation but none of this was sufficient enough for me. I had more ideas running through my mind and until they were done, I had nothing to fight for.One thing that was certain was the fact that I decided to go on with the entire trip. For Camille to think that everything was fine on my end and I was not under any pressure to give them a correct prediction or else lead them to their doom, she was just the same like everybody else. Most of them had concluded that I was overreacting about certain things that I did which was okay by me and

Kael's POV. I didn't have much to think of but I knew that something had been going on that I have was not very attentive to and I needed to change that immediately before it was so late for me to do that anymore I wasn't obsessing over Selene but she had made very valid points and I needed to check downtown just to see what was lurking behind this scenes As a spy myself I knew that whenever there was a lot of count it was going to birth something more than a whirlwind. I didn't have much to talk about but I was very sure that there was even something else going on that needed to help in releasing the pains. I had nothing more to look for besides the obvious answers that I had gotten over a long time. I didn't also have what it took to be able to switch things up but I was sure that at some point I would be able to see what was going on and deal with it. Firstly there was nothing else that I needed to do that was going to help out. All I needed right now was to make sure that I h

Lyra's POV. One of the most amazing things that I had ever done in my entire life had to be the fact that I have been able to understand the difference between the different timelines and how to navigate through it without losing my mind.I was only committed to one and that needed all the time in the world just to be able to sort many differences out."So... Are you a little bit worried by what this might bring and how longMy heart was pounding so hard that I almost felt it leaping out of my chest. My hands were tight but I had only one will.I needed to live, even if that was the last thing that I did. There was basically no option for me and I wasn't going to take chances. "If she gets away, we are doomed!" Somebody yelled from behind me. I was a little bit irritated by the way they were acting but I couldn't blame them either. It wasn't entirely there fault the way things were going, they had just been conditioned to think that Selene wielded the entire power. I also thought

  • ALPHA KAEL'S REJECTION    CHAPTER 62

Lyra's POV. I didn't think that there was going to be a change in the fact, "I didn't have the right to change the mandate but there wasn't anything more the other day." "Are you sure that there's something wrong with the issues at hand or is this something else that you need to tell me?" Camille headed towards me with the intention to get more information out of me but that was not going to happen. I had already figured out that there was going to be a little bit of a mix up here and there and I was waiting to see how long it was going to take and what exactly I had to do to sort out the entire problems. I had taken a deep breath yet refused to look straight into what she wanted me to do. I was thinking about how long it was going to take for me to be able to sort out a few things but here I was, dealing with more issues than none. "Is this really a thing or...?"I took a deep breath refusing to answer my question because it was harmful to my person and I would love to have the
