CHAPTER 2: YOU'RE ALL I NEED

(STEPH P.O.V.)

We were in the car, stuck in traffic, on our way to do a little shopping—or, as I liked to call it, spending someone else's money.

Hahaha!

“What are you grinning about?” Gino suddenly asked.

I had been staring at him without realizing that a ridiculous little smile had crept onto my lips. Well, not that I could help it. My brain had a habit of coming up with the most ridiculous ideas at the most random times.

“I just want you to buy me something,” I mumbled.

Gino glanced at me, looking as though the traffic had already drained every last bit of patience he had.

“What did you say? Could you speak a little louder, please? And stop trying to act cute. You're not cute.”

My eyes narrowed into tiny slits, making me look like some possessed version of Liza Soberano.

Hahahaha!

“Never mind. You're so mean,” I replied, putting on my best pout.

Unfortunately, that little act had never worked on my emotionally unresponsive best friend.

“Fine. I said you're treating me today,” I declared, looking straight ahead instead of at him.

“Tsk! You could've said that earlier. And when have you ever gone out with me and paid for anything yourself, huh?”

I turned to him and flashed my most shameless grin.

“Never! Hehe!”

He simply shook his head, probably wondering what crime he'd committed in a past life to deserve me.

After eating at McDonald's, I dragged Gino to the arcade.

We spent some time playing a few games, and I had to admit that it was ridiculously fun.

Do you know why?

Hahaha! Not only did I fail to win a single decent prize, but I also managed to spend two thousand pesos on tokens.

Yes. Two thousand.

And as I'd mentioned earlier, every single centavo came from my incredibly generous best friend.

“What the heck! You're seriously just wasting my money!” he complained as I tried another game.

I turned to him, grinned, and threw my arms around him.

“Ah lab yu!” ( I love you)

He immediately removed my arms from around him.

“Whoa, whoa, whoa! No hugging just because you're thanking me, okay? At this rate, I'm going to grow old alone because of you.”

I blinked at him.

“Huh? What do you mean, grow old alone? Why? Do you have a crush on someone? Is your crush here?”

I fired one question after another, but instead of answering, he lowered his head and fell silent for a moment.

Then a woman approached us.

“Hi, Gino.”

She was slightly taller than me, fair-skinned, gorgeous, stylish, and had the kind of figure that made people turn their heads.

And did I mention she was beautiful?

Because she was.

“H-Hi, Kath,” Gino greeted her, suddenly sounding a little shy.

Oh?

Interesting.

“Uh, Steph, this is Kath. Kath, this is Steph,” he said, introducing us with a hint of awkwardness.

“Hi,” I greeted her with a small wave.

She waved back.

For the next few minutes, Gino and Kath chatted while we walked around the mall. I had absolutely no idea where we were headed, but that hardly mattered. I'd come here with my best friend, and naturally, wherever he went, I was supposed to be right there with him.

At least, that was how I saw it.

“Bes, don't you have class later?” Gino suddenly asked. “I'll get you a taxi so you can head home. Kath and I still have something to talk about. Is it okay if I don't take you home?”

His eyes kept shifting between me and Kath.

Oh.

So that's how it is.

“Ah, right. I almost forgot. Sure, go ahead. Have fun! It was nice meeting you, Kath.”

“I'll get you a taxi first. Oh, and Kath—”

I cut him off before he could finish.

“It's fine. You don't have to get me one. I can take a taxi by myself.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah, of course! When have I ever not been sure about something?”

He leaned down, kissed me on the cheek, and returned to where Kath was waiting.

Kath even waved at me before I turned away.

That woman.

P.S. I'm not a devil. I'm just annoyed because her sudden appearance ruined my chance to go to the book sale.

That's all.

Nothing more.

When I got home, I went straight to my bedroom and carelessly dropped my shoulder bag onto the bed.

It contained nothing but my wallet.

What a productive day.

I picked up my guitar and began playing our favorite song, Don't Be Afraid.

The familiar melody filled my room as I sang along, letting the music carry my thoughts somewhere far away.

It was a song that meant something to both Gino and me. Whenever I played it, I couldn't help thinking about the things we wanted from life, the fears we carried, and the freedom we hoped to find someday.

When I finished singing, I let the last note linger before falling silent.

For a while, I simply stared into space.

Then, almost without thinking, I reached for my phone and opened our message thread.

To Best Friend

Don't forget me when you finally get a girlfriend, okay?

Sent.

Before lying down, I carefully leaned my guitar against the wall and closed my eyes for a moment.

I knew Gino probably wouldn't reply right away. He was busy with his girl—or, at least, that was what I imagined whenever he spent time with someone else.

And there I was again, feeling like I didn't quite belong.

Beep!

One new message from Best Friend.

Best Friend:

Idiot! Why are you being so dramatic again? I'm on my way home. What do you want me to bring you?

I couldn't help smiling as I read his message.

Then I started typing.

Me:

You're all I need. 😊💗

Sent.

A few seconds later, another message appeared.

Best Friend:

What song are you singing now, huh? You really have no originality. Tsk! I'll be there in five minutes. See you.

I stared at the screen, smiling like an idiot.

That was Gino.

He could tease me all day, call me dramatic, complain about my spending habits, and act as though I were the biggest nuisance in his life.

But somehow, he always came back.

And no matter how many times he left me behind for a little while, he never really abandoned me.

At the end of the day, he was still the one who came looking for me.

And for now, that was enough.

GINO REYES' POVI had no idea how many minutes I'd been standing outside Steph's house. All I knew was that my arms were starting to ache from carrying the breakfast I'd cooked for her. The morning sun was practically punishing me for what I'd done to her.But did I leave right away? No.Because I was Gino Reyes, the most patient best friend in the entire world.Okay, fine. Maybe I wasn't actually the most patient person in the world. But I was trying."Steph!" I knocked on the door again. "Best friend! I brought you breakfast!"Silence."Your favorite, too! The one I reheated in your pan. I even added some Magic Sarap and salt because it turned out to be a little bland."Still no answer."Come on! I already ate a little, but there's plenty left, so I reheated it for you!"Nothing.I glanced at the container in my hands. The truth was, I hadn't even taken a single bite. I'd only said that to tempt her into opening the door. I figured that if she knew I'd brought her favorite food, she

  • ALPHA, OMEGA, LOVE   CHAPTER 7: FOREVER ALONE

STEPH P.O.V.I woke up to the most mouthwatering smell imaginable.Seriously, what kind of torture was it to wake up to the smell of something delicious when you had absolutely no idea what it was—or, more importantly, whether you were going to get any?I didn’t know what was being cooked, but the smell was enough to make my stomach growl. So, even though my eyes were still stubbornly refusing to open, I dragged myself out of bed.“Whoever owns that food, I hope you choke on it,” I grumbled. “You’re sharing the smell but not the actual food. Tsk!”Since I already knew there was nothing cooked in the kitchen, I headed straight for the refrigerator instead. And because I was starving, I briefly considered eating the entire thing.Damn this house! It was huge, yet there was absolutely nothing to eat!I grabbed a glass of water from the fridge.“You’re so skinny because the first thing you give your poor, dying insides every morning is cold water.”The unexpected voice made me drop the g

  • ALPHA, OMEGA, LOVE   CHAPTER 6: ONE CHOICE, ONE BROKEN PROMISE

GINO REYES’ P.O.V.I didn’t know when the things that used to come so easily had started becoming so difficult.Back then, whenever something important happened in Steph’s life, I never had to think twice about whether I should be there. I was already by her side before she even called for me. Sometimes, I even arrived before she did.Whenever she had a game, I was the loudest person in the bleachers.Whenever she had a problem, I was the first person she called.Whenever she wanted something, I was the first person she pestered. And whenever she had no one else to talk to, I was always the person she looked for.I never thought the day would come when I would have to question whether I should show up for one of the most important moments of her life.Especially when that moment was her graduation.“Gino, are you listening to me?”I glanced at the phone resting on the table. I stared at the name on the screen for a few seconds before answering the call.“Yeah, Kath. Sorry. I’m just a

  • ALPHA, OMEGA, LOVE   CHAPTER 5: THE EX-SUITOR I NEVER ANSWERED

STEPH P.O.V.“Hello! Tita?!”I called from outside Gino’s house.“Hey, best friend! Are you there?!”I shouted again, hoping someone would hear me.I’ll admit it: I was angry with Gino for missing my graduation. But despite that, I still wanted to know why he hadn’t shown up. It was the first time he’d ever missed something that important to me. For better or worse, Gino had always been there for every major event in my life.So why had this time been different?A few moments later, Gino’s mother appeared. Tita Vicky immediately opened the gate and let me in.“Steph, have you been waiting out here long?” she asked.“Just a little while, Tita,” I answered.I had always felt comfortable around Tita Vicky. In many ways, she was like a second mother to me.“What brings you here?” she asked as we stepped inside.“Ah, I just wanted to ask where Gino is. He hasn’t texted me since yesterday, and he didn’t even show up for my graduation.”I answered while happily devouring the cookies she had

  • ALPHA, OMEGA, LOVE   CHAPTER 4: THE DAY YOU WEREN'T THERE

(STEPH P.O.V.)“Psst! Best friend.”I called out to Gino, who was walking ahead of me.We were somewhere along the coast, in a place that wasn't exactly far from civilization but felt far enough from the noise of everyday life. Gino had been driving for a while when he apparently got tired of it and decided to stop by the side of the road.Luckily, the sea was right in front of us.“What?” he answered without turning around. He had a bag slung over one shoulder and an icebox filled with soda in his other hand.“What do you call this place?” I asked, following him.“I don't know.”I stopped walking for a second.“What do you mean, you don't know?”“Not every place needs a name you have to know about. What's important is that it's peaceful.” He glanced at me. “And it'll be even more peaceful if you stop asking so many questions.”“Wow. Such a philosopher.”“Thank you. I try.”“That's not a compliment, idiot!”He only laughed. When he finally stopped and set our things down on the grass,

  • ALPHA, OMEGA, LOVE   CHAPTER 3: THE IDIOT STOOD ME UP

(STEP P.O.V)“Bestie, I need your help.”Gino and I were at one of his family’s rest houses in El Salvador. Our finals were already over, but his wouldn’t be until Monday. Apparently, he still had a mountain of projects to finish and a whole lot of reviewing to do.“What is it now? One thing at a time, best friend, okay? You’re not a robot. You can’t study for exams and work on projects at the same time,” I told him as I helped organize the mountain of books and other things he had brought with him.“That’s exactly why I called you. I need your help. There are a lot of essays to answer, and that’s what you’re going to work on. I know essays are your strength. If all our exams consisted of essays, you’d probably get a perfect score on every single one.”“Tsk! I thought you said I was stupid, huh, Mr. Genius?” I teased.“You’re not stupid academically. Do you know where you’re stupid, though?” he asked.“Where?”“In love.”I shot him a murderous glare.“Do you actually want my help or n
