Synopsis

Male POV

Remorse Family

Fake Death

Melodramatic

My adoptive younger brother, Jonathan Arden, is getting married soon, so he has invited me to his wedding. It turns out that the bride is Charlotte Vaughn, my childhood sweetheart-slash-fiancee. My parents think that I'm going to steal Charlotte from Jonathan and cause a huge ruckus at the wedding. That's why they've hired 100 bodyguards, who soon have me surrounded. When things are getting tense, Jonathan rushes down the stage and starts pleading with me. "Mom, Dad, I'm sure Harrison showed up without an invitation just so he can give me his blessings. Please don't blame him." Charlotte takes my hand and says to me pleadingly, "Jonathan is diagnosed with cancer. He's afraid that you might be worried about him, so he's hidden his condition from you. I'm pretending to marry him just so he won't die single." I express my understanding toward the couple before giving them my blessings. Delighted, Charlotte promises me, "Don't worry, you're the only one I view as my actual husband. Once the wedding is over, we'll register our marriage right away." What she doesn't know is that I've already booked an appointment in a fake-death program. A week later, I will leave this place for real. After all, I don't want anything to do with my parents and Charlotte anymore.

Chapter 1
Harrison's POVMy fiancee, Charlotte Vaughn, walked up to me with a glass of wine in hand and looked at me with disappointment. "Harrison, you came with a fake invitation. Are you trying to frame your brother again?"I originally had no intention of attending the wedding of my adoptive brother, Jonathan Arden. But he had sent me an invitation with complete sincerity, begging me to show up and even saying he wanted to apologize to me in person. We were still family, after all. I wanted to reconcile with my parents and give Jonathan a chance. Yet I never could have imagined his bride would turn out to be my fiancee. As I gathered my thoughts and prepared to explain, Mom, standing nearby, angrily splashed her drink in my face. She jabbed a finger at my forehead and snapped, "You really never change! How did I end up with such a vicious son?"If I had known it would come to this, I never should've begged your dad to go easy on you when you leaked the company's confidential information

Chapter 2
Harrison's POVCharlotte immediately panicked when she saw my reaction. She desperately tried to remove the diamond ring as she hurriedly explained, "Harrison, don't get the wrong idea. I only did this to make everything look more convincing."Jonathan tightened his grip on her hand. "Charlotte, stop going against what you truly feel. Aren't you embarrassed wearing that cheap silver ring worth only a few hundred dollars?"You wore it every time you were with him just to protect his pathetic ego, but I've seen you take it off countless times the moment you stepped out the door. It hurts me to watch you put yourself through that."Harrison, you keep saying you love Charlotte more than anything. Did it never occur to you how difficult things were for her?"Charlotte couldn't hide her embarrassment. She looked like she wanted to explain herself to me, but she eventually lowered her head in frustration. At that moment, my mind was a complete mess. I could no longer bring myself to ask

Harrison's POVAs Charlotte looked over, I quickly turned off my phone's screen."Alright. Go on back. I'm leaving first," I said. After hearing my answer, Charlotte hesitated before speaking. "Harrison, where are you going?""Just walking around. It's been a while since I've been back," I replied.Only then did she finally relax and smile sweetly at me. "Okay. Don't go too far. Once I'm done here, we'll go register our marriage."I watched her run back into the wedding venue before turning away and wandering aimlessly. Familiar scenery filled my vision, but my thoughts drifted far away.Jonathan was the orphaned son of the person who had saved my parents' lives. From the moment he took our family name and was brought into our home, he stole all of my parents' affection.I had heard that parents loved children who did well in school. Desperate for them to notice me too, I pushed myself to study as hard as I could. The year I took the SAT, I brought home an acceptance letter fr

Harrison's POV"I'm home," I replied. The moment Charlotte heard my words, she sobered up on the other end of the line. Her voice grew hurried. "Which home are you at?"She knew this was my only home. Now, even this place no longer belonged to me.Not long after, Charlotte rushed back in a panic with Jonathan."Harrison, when did you come back? Why didn't you tell me?" she asked. "The wedding ended late, and the courthouse was already closed. I'll go get the marriage certificate with you next time."Seeing the uneasiness on her face, I chose not to expose her lie and simply stubbed out the cigarette in my hand.I had already received a message from Jonathan. He told me that their wedding banquet ended early and that they went to the city hall at 3:00 pm to get their marriage certificate. They had also found time to have a small party with friends. After eating, drinking, and enjoying themselves, they headed to a karaoke bar and only remembered me after everything was over.Mak

Harrison's POVLooking at Jonathan's mocking expression, I couldn't hold back and punched him right then and there. He pressed a hand to his bleeding lip and smiled even more smugly. "Harrison Arden, remember this. I'm going to take away everything you have."He succeeded. I had nothing left now.He continued, "You still don't know that the person who filed that anonymous report against you a year ago was Charlotte, do you? I should really thank her for it. If she hadn't given us your computer password, the plan wouldn't have come together so perfectly."It turned out that Charlotte had been betraying me far earlier than I thought. No wonder she kept pushing me to confess during the time everything went wrong.During the year I was transferred away, she was always unusually busy. At first, she would still video-call me, but eventually, she didn't even bother replying to my messages. The love she once had for me was real, but so was the fact that she no longer loved me.I paused

Chapter 6
Third-Person POVCharlotte froze instantly. Her hands went limp, and the journal crashed to the floor with a thud. "W-What? What nonsense are you talking about? I was just on the phone with him. How could he possibly be dead?"Can you ask him if he's upset because I didn't come to see him off? This joke isn't funny at all!"Charlotte broke down, rambling on without stopping. Only when she had nothing left to say did the person on the other end finally get a chance to speak. "I understand how you must be feeling. Accidents happen. Please accept my condolences."I've already sent you the address. Please arrange for his burial as soon as possible."A series of beeps came from the phone. As the call ended, Charlotte's legs gave out, and she crumpled to the ground.Harrison's mother, Penelope Walker, grabbed Charlotte by the collar and asked in a sharp voice, "Who did you say died?"Tears streamed down Charlotte's cheeks. She choked out, "Mrs. Arden, Harrison was in a car accident. H

Third-Person POVBack then, Charlotte had told herself it was fine. She thought all the suffering they were going through was for a better tomorrow. She had planned to spend the rest of her life making it up to Harrison and helping him heal, little by little. But she never imagined the accident would come so soon. Not only did she lose the chance to make things right, but she didn't even have enough time to tell him the truth.Charlotte forced herself to keep going and sought out a mortician to reconstruct Harrison's broken body. His life had already fallen apart badly enough. At the very least, he deserved to leave this world whole.Charlotte handled the funeral arrangements and repeatedly called Harrison's parents, but they never answered. Even coworkers and classmates who weren't especially close to Harrison showed up, but his parents were nowhere to be found.Harrison's former roommates murmured and sighed among themselves."Harrison used to tell us that his parents were bias

Third-Person POVCharlotte broke down and grabbed Penelope by the shoulders. "Mrs. Arden, was Harrison the child of your enemy or something? Do you really despise him that much?"To fulfill Jonathan's wishes, you worked with him to forge medical records and used me to deceive Harrison. Was the so-called incident when Harrison pushed Jonathan down the stairs also part of your plan?"You really live up to your reputation as business moguls. All those vicious schemes ended up being turned against your own family. Harrison's death happened because of all of you."She was just as guilty. Her own doubts and distrust had quietly led everything to this point too.Charlotte would never forget the day Penelope invited her over to the house. She had watched with her own eyes as Jonathan tumbled down the stairs.Harrison had been standing on the steps, dazed and frozen. He claimed that he didn't push Jonathan, but the surveillance footage and the housekeepers' testimonies seemed to prove oth

Chapter 9
Third-Person POVJonathan stood frozen in place.Penelope broke down and shoved Charlotte forcefully. "You vicious woman! You're pushing my son to kill himself. That's against the law. You'll get what's coming to you."Charlotte had already become fearless. She thought that if God truly intended to punish her, he might as well take her life too. She desperately wanted to see Harrison and tell him she was sorry.Jonathan was stunned. He had been scheming for so long, hoping to slowly work his way into Charlotte's heart. He had given up living in a luxurious villa and had slept on the couch in her tiny rental instead. With other women, all he had to do was beckon, and they would come running to him. But with Charlotte, no matter what tricks he pulled, he could never earn her genuine affection."Why? What's so good about Harrison? Why can't you look my way for once? Why can't you give me even a little love?" he asked. At first, Jonathan hadn't actually developed feelings for Charlo

Third-Person POVHarrison never came back.Charlotte spent the next few days at home, numb and despondent. When it was time to return to work, she packed her schedule as full as possible, hoping the constant work would help her forget Harrison. One day after work, right after saying goodbye to her coworkers, she thought she spotted Harrison for a split second. Without thinking, she ran after him. "Harrison—"When she turned the person around, she realized her eyes had been playing tricks on her. She quickly apologized and fled in embarrassment.Everywhere Charlotte looked felt achingly familiar, and every passing scene would bring back memories of Harrison and her.Sometimes they were laughing and teasing each other; other times they were walking hand in hand. They were all such small, ordinary moments, yet each one pierced her heart like a needle, over and over.People often said that when someone lost the person they loved most, the moment of loss brought only numbness.
