Aria's POV

I sat frozen on the sofa, my breath catching in my throat. My Woman? Since when?!

Part of me, the old, obedient daughter, wanted to step in and shield my father. I almost opened my mouth to tell Valerius not to disrespect my father. He was a respected pack Beta, after all. He was my parent.

But then, the brutal memories of earlier crashed back over me.

I remembered standing in his study, crying, telling him that Jacewas cheating on me with my own sister.

I remembered the cold, disgusted look on my father's face as he told me I was weak. I remembered him commanding me to quietly accept my demotion to a delta rank, telling me to go sleep in the dirt barracks, and ordering me to stand by and smile while Chloe stole my entire life.

‘Stop being so paranoid and dramatic,’ my mother had said. ‘Your lineage is too weak,’ my father had said and it shattered what was left of my heart.

After recalling those memories, my mouth snapped shut and a cold, dark satisfaction bloomed in my chest.

I folded my arms and sank into the cushion. I didn't say a single word. Let him suffer. For the first time in my entire life, someone was standing up for me, fighting my battles, and shielding me from the people who were supposed to love me.

And ironically, it was the most feared monster on the continent.

My mother, sensing the life-threatening danger, quickly stepped in front of my trembling father. As the Beta’s wife, she was used to playing diplomat, smoothing over disasters with polished smiles.

"Your Majesty, please," my mother said softly, placing a gentle hand on her husband's chest to keep him quiet. "Please forgive my husband. He is merely overwhelmed by the tremendous honor of your presence. We mean no offense, and we certainly do not wish to bring any harm or disrespect to you or your royal lineage."

Valerius looked down at her, his silver eyes cold and emotionless.

My mother offered a sweet, practiced smile. "We welcome you to the Silvermoon kingdom, Your Majesty. But It is simply unacceptable for a ruler of your stature to stay in a dusty, rustic cabin on the edge of the woods. We came to invite you back to the main packhouse. The executive suite is fully prepared for you. Please, allow us to host you properly. Come to the packhouse, take a hot bath, rest a bit, and then we can sit down in comfort to discuss... why you have honored us with your presence."

Valerius stayed quiet for a long moment, evaluating her. Finally, he gave a slow, curt nod. "Very well."

My mother let out a quiet sigh of relief and immediately turned toward me, her sharp eyes narrowing slightly. "Aria, stop sitting there like a lump. Run ahead to the packhouse right now and round up the senior servants. Make sure the executive suite is cleaned, prepared, and—"

"No," Valerius interrupted coldly.

My mother stopped mid-sentence, looking confused. "Pardon, Your Majesty?"

"Aria stays with me," Valerius stated firmly. He didn't even look at my mother. Instead, his dangerous gaze drifted over to where Jace was standing near the door, clutching his bruised ribs.

Valerius pointed a long, scarred finger directly at his son. "You. Boy."

Jace froze, his face turning pale. "F-Father?"

"Go round up the servants," Valerius ordered, his deep voice dripping with absolute command. "Prepare the executive suite. Make sure the linens are fresh. Now."

Chloe gasped. Jace was the future Alpha! He was treated like a king in this pack, catered to by everyone, never lifting a finger for manual labor. Now, his own father was ordering him to do the job of a low-ranking housemaid.

Jace’s face flushed a deep, embarrassing red. He looked at Chloe, who was staring at him in utter disbelief. "Father... please, the servants can just—"

Valerius flared his Alpha aura. The air in the cabin grew ice-cold, and a low, guttural growl vibrated in the King's chest. "Did I fucking stutter?"

Jace flinched violently, snapping his head down. "N-No, Father! I am sorry! I will go right away!"

Jace scrambled out the cabin door, practically falling over his own feet as he rushed toward the main packhouse to find the servants, completely humiliated.

I had never wanted to burst out laughing so hard in my life, but unfortunately for me, my problems were far from over, and from the look in my father and Chloe’s eyes, it seems that my problems were about to begin.

My father swallowed hard, before stepping forward to lead the way out. "Your Majesty, please follow me to the main dining hall of the pack house while they ready the room. We will give you privacy and space."

My father gave me a pointed look, then turned, clearly expecting me to follow him out so he could scold me in private. He reached out to grab my shoulder to drag me along, but Valeriusstepped smoothly between us, resting a heavy, warm hand on my shoulder.

"Aria stays with me," Valerius said, his voice dropping into that dark, lethal tone. "Nobody tells her what to do. Nobody touches her. Only me."

My father froze, and my mother’s jaw literally dropped from shock. Chloe looked like she wanted to scream, but the terrifying power rolling off the Lycan King kept them all glued to the floor.

Aria“Let me see her.”He had a grip on my wrist like a vise. I hadn’t seen him move. He was kneeling on the rock with the wires of light taut as harp strings behind him, and his eyes, those awful brass eyes, were wide and wet and begging.“One hour. Bring her through the door. One hour, Aria, and I will give you anything. I’ll take the march back. I’ll swear on any oath you name.”“No.”“She’s mine.”“She is not.” It came out of me in a voice I’d never used. “She’s three weeks old. She likes to be rocked on her left side and she hates the cold and she screams like a banshee when her father puts her down. She is not a thing you get to collect. You don’t know her. You don’t know a single thing about her.”“I know her face.”“You know a dead girl’s face.”It hit him like a slap. I saw it land, and I saw him take it, and I didn’t take it back.He let go of my wrist. His hand fell to his side, and the wires dimmed.“I know,” he said. “I know. You’re right.” His voice shook. “But I held he

AriaHe didn’t weep. I’d expected it. I think I’d have understood it better if he had.He sat with his hands open on his knees and the silver wire pulsing in them, and he told me about Isa in the flat, careful voice of a man reading a very old letter.“She came early. A midwinter storm. Ysolde labored two nights, and on the third dawn she was born, and she was small. Too small. She had black hair, and her mother’s chin. She never cried, not even at the first breath. She only looked.” His throat worked. “Looked at me. As if she had been waiting a very long while for me to come in.”“What happened?”“She fell sick on the fourth day. A fever, they said. A thing in the blood. We had the best healers in the world. We had all of them.” His jaw tightened. “She died in my arms at dusk. And I do not remember the next part, little queen. I remember only that the sky opened.”I thought of the glass country in the pond, of the cities and seas and green hills, burned flat. I thought of Ysolde walk

AriaHe showed me, in the end, rather than tell me.“Give me your hand,” Veyran said. “Not for the chains. They would burn you. There. Palm up, flat on the water.”I knelt at the edge of the spit of rock. The lake was warm. It had no smell and no ripple, and when my palm touched it the surface gave under my fingers like a held breath.“Close your eyes. Don’t reach. Only listen.”I listened. At first there was nothing. Then, very faintly, down the long thread that ran from my breastbone into the black, I felt something pull.It was a small, patient tug. A hook set in the middle of the thing we shared. And as it pulled, the whole lake shivered, and out of the dark came a taste, not on my tongue but at the back of my mind, cloying and sweet and wrong.Burnt sugar.“Sarita,” I whispered.“The witch. Yes.” Veyran’s voice was low. “She found the thread the night the blade went through you. She is not clever, but she is stubborn, and she had a box that sings. She puts a note in my ear, and t

AriaThe dark behind the door wasn’t dark.I’d braced for the way caves are dark: wet, close, pressing down on the skull. Instead I stepped over the threshold and the floor was warm under my slippers and the air smelled of rain on summer stone, and above me, so high I had to tip my head back until my neck complained, hung a sky.It wasn’t a sky. I knew that at once. The stars were wrong. There were too many of them, and they didn’t flicker; they simply stayed, pinned against the black as steady as lamps in a window. And they were arranged in loops. Rings inside rings, ten-pointed, wheeling slowly overhead. My crest. The same pattern that had grown across my chest, written across the roof of the world.Behind me, the door closed without a sound. When I turned there was no door, only a smooth silver-veined wall, and I felt my pulse jump in my throat. Then, very quietly, in the place under my breastbone where the marks sat warm, something told me it would open when I asked.I decided to

AriaI told Valerius at midnight, in the dark of the empty cloister, with Ember asleep in the crook of my arm.I’d rehearsed it. I’d stood in the cold for an hour with the words laid out like cards. It all went out of my head the moment he came round the corner and I saw his face.“No,” he said.“I haven’t said anything yet.”“You didn’t have to.”“Valerius.” I made myself look at him. “They’re coming up the valley. They’ll be at the wall by dawn. A hundred thousand people, and every one of them will walk into a fire if I don’t—”“I know.”“If I go down there, and I speak to him—”“I know, Aria.” He crossed the cloister in three strides and stopped in front of me, close, but not touching, as if he were afraid of what he might do if he did. “I’ve done the arithmetic. I’ve done it a hundred times. A hundred thousand against one woman. A hundred thousand against you. It doesn’t come out. It’s not meant to.” His voice shook. “That’s what he’s counting on.”“I’m not going to stay there.”“

AriaThe hawk arrived at noon.It came in low over the temple wall, wings ragged, and fell more than landed on the steps. Kaelen’s hawk. A scrap of red cloth was knotted to its leg. Valerius had the message open before Cassian could take the bird, and I watched his face while he read, and I knew.“The capital,” he said.“How bad?”“A mob. Four thousand. They came out of the south forest at dawn, silver-eyed, singing.” His voice was flat. “Heather and Kaelen have closed the gates. They’re holding the walls. They’ve lost nine men.” He turned the paper over. “There’s a line at the bottom. In my mother’s hand. Do not come back. It’s a lure.”“A lure for what?”“For me.” His mouth twisted. “She says every wolf in that crowd is walking north. Not toward the palace. They’re only passing it. They’re herding the guard along the road. They want us to turn round. They want us to split.”Alina had gone very still, her hands tight on the cane. “Sarita.”“Sarita,” Valerius agreed. “Your mother-in-l
