Emily’s POV

I stared at myself in the mirror and barely recognized the girl looking back.

The tight black dress Kara lent me hugged every curve, short enough to make me tug at the hem nervously. My eyes were still puffy from crying, but I’d managed to cover most of the redness with makeup.

Lip gloss, mascara, a little highlighter on my cheeks. I looked… hot. And completely wrecked at the same time.

“I look like a girl who’s about to make bad decisions,” I muttered.

Kara appeared behind me in the mirror, grinning as she adjusted one of my straps. “That’s the whole point, Em. Tonight you’re allowed to be reckless. Just a little.”

I forced a smile, but it felt fake. My chest still ached like someone had punched a hole right through it.

“Come on,” Kara said, grabbing my wrist. “The cab’s waiting. Icebreaker is going to be packed tonight.”

The club was only ten minutes from campus, but the moment we stepped inside, the noise and lights hit me like a wave. Heavy bass vibrated through the floor. Colored lights swept across the crowd. Bodies moved together on the dance floor, laughing, grinding, forgetting their own problems. I suddenly felt small and out of place.

Kara didn’t give me time to overthink. She pulled me straight to the bar, ordered two shots of tequila, and slid one toward me.

“First one’s for courage,” she said, clinking her glass against mine. “Bottoms up.”

I didn’t even hesitate. The liquid burned down my throat, warm and sharp. I coughed, eyes watering, but immediately reached for the second one.

“Easy,” Kara laughed. “Pace yourself.”

The second shot went down smoother. A pleasant buzz started spreading through my body, softening the sharp edges of my pain.

We found a small table near the dance floor. The moment we sat, the words spilled out of me like I’d been holding them behind a dam all evening.

“I walked in smiling, Kara. I had that painting in my hands, the one I stayed up until three in the morning finishing. And there he was… with her on his lap. Kissing her like I didn’t even exist.” My voice cracked.

“His hands were on her waist exactly like he used to hold me. Same way. Same everything.”

Kara listened quietly, stirring her drink with the tiny black straw. Her expression grew darker with every word.

“I keep asking myself what I did wrong,” I continued. “Was I too quiet? Too focused on my paintings? Did I not give him enough attention? Was I… not enough?”

“You stop that right now,” Kara said firmly, leaning forward.

“This is not about you being lacking. This is about Lucas being a selfish asshole who couldn’t keep it in his pants. You’re kind, talented, and loyal. He’s the one who messed up.”

I nodded, but the doubt still gnawed at me.

The alcohol was working its magic, loosening the tight knot in my stomach. I ordered a strawberry cocktail — sweet, strong, and easy to drink. Then another.

As the third drink settled in, memories flooded in without warning.

I remembered the first time Lucas came to my art studio. He’d stood there in his hoodie, looking completely out of place among the paint splatters and canvases, but he stayed for two hours. He asked real questions about my work.

When I showed him the painting I was struggling with, he said, “It already looks perfect to me.” That night he’d kissed me so gently against the studio door, like I was something precious.

I remembered how he used to wait outside my evening classes with hot chocolate in winter. How he’d listen to me ramble about color theory and brush techniques even though his eyes would glaze over sometimes. He made me feel seen. Like I didn’t have to be anyone else.

And now? All of it felt like a lie.

Kara suddenly stood up and grabbed my hand. “Enough sitting. We’re dancing.”

I tried to protest, but she was already pulling me onto the crowded floor. The music was loud, pulsing, alive.

Kara moved like she belonged there, laughing and spinning me around. For a few minutes I tried to follow her. I raised my hands, swayed my hips, let the bass guide my body.

“I need another drink,” I shouted over the music.

Kara’s smile faded a little. “Em, you’ve already had three. Maybe slow down?”

“I’m fine,” I lied, heading back to the bar anyway.

I ordered a stronger cocktail this time, something blue and icy that tasted like candy but hit hard. I finished half of it in one long sip. The room started to feel warmer, softer around the edges.

My thoughts grew fuzzy, but the pain in my chest felt further away. Like it belonged to someone else.

Kara followed me, worry clear on her face. “Talk to me. What’s going through your head?”

I leaned against the bar, the cold marble pressing into my back. “I gave him everything, Kara. I trusted him completely. And he just… threw it away for some random girl in a café.” My voice turned bitter.

“Maybe I was boring. Maybe that’s why he looked for someone else.”

“You are not boring,” Kara said, squeezing my shoulder.

“You’re creative and sweet and you see the world in colors other people don’t even notice. He’s the blind one.”

Kara watched me closely. “I’m serious, Em. I don’t want you waking up tomorrow regretting this. Getting drunk won’t erase what happened.”

“Maybe not,” I said, taking a long sip.

The sweetness coated my tongue. “But it makes it hurt less right now.”

We went back to the dance floor. Kara tried again to pull me into the music, singing along to the songs, making silly faces to make me laugh.

I finished my fourth drink and set the empty glass on a high table near the edge of the dance floor. The club spun gently around me, lights bleeding into one another. My heart felt raw but strangely lighter.

I looked at Kara, who was still dancing a few feet away, then leaned in close so only she could hear.

“If Lucas can kiss someone else like that…” My voice came out low and bitter, almost daring. “Then maybe I can do something wild too.”

Kara’s eyes widened. She opened her mouth to reply, but I was already turning back toward the bar, the words hanging in the air between us like a promise I wasn’t sure I could keep.

  • Accidentally Yours, Hockey Captain   Chapter 192: Colors That Grow

Emily’s POVMy easel sits by the big window now, where the morning sun spills across the canvas and warms the whole room. For so long, painting was how I held things close — secrets, grief, hope I couldn’t speak aloud. But this new collection feels different. It’s not about holding on anymore. It’s about letting things show.I paint the small things — the way Maya’s tiny hands curl around my finger, Alex laughing as he lifts her high above his head, sunlight slanting through the kitchen window onto the wooden table, the oak tree in our backyard at golden hour. They aren’t grand or dramatic. They’re just… ours. And somehow, that makes them feel like the most important stories I’ve ever told.Pierre was the first one to see them. He stood in the middle of my studio, turning slowly from one canvas to the next, and when he looked at me his eyes were bright. “These are your most beautiful work yet, Em. Because you’re not hiding behind them anymore. You’re right there in every stroke.”Word

  • Accidentally Yours, Hockey Captain   Chapter 191: The Days That Glow

Alex’s POVThe light comes soft now, filtering through the kitchen window early, before the world has fully woken up. These are the hours I love best — quiet, golden, just the three of us. Maya on a blanket on the floor, kicking her legs and cooing at nothing in particular. Emily at the stove, humming something low and sweet, hair loose, wearing my old hoodie tied at the waist. Me, leaning in the doorway, coffee in hand, watching the life we built unfold right in front of my eyes.It took me a long time to understand: the greatest gift isn’t something grand. It’s ordinary. It’s waking up without fear. It’s knowing exactly where you belong. We’ve fallen into a rhythm, gentle and steady as a heartbeat. I’m up early — practice starts at the arena before the city is fully awake — but I’m back by mid-morning, and I never walk in without pausing just inside the door, breathing in the smell of home — coffee, vanilla, Emily’s paint, that soft sweet scent that’s purely Maya.I find small ways

  • Accidentally Yours, Hockey Captain   Chapter 190: Home in the Light

Emily’s POVSpring arrived soft and sudden — one morning I woke up and the air smelled like jasmine and damp earth, and the trees at the edge of the yard had unfurled bright green leaves, and everywhere I looked, things were blooming. It felt like the whole world was waking up, fresh and new, right along with us.Maya turned three months old that week. She’d changed so much — from that tiny, sleepy bundle we’d brought home to this bright, curious little person, smiling at everything, reaching for faces and fingers and sunlight, cooing like she had so much to say if only we knew the language. She’d started grabbing onto my hair and Alex’s shirt with determined little fists, and she’d light up the second she saw him, kicking her legs and grinning wide like he was the best thing that had ever happened to anyone. And honestly? I couldn’t argue with her.The day of the ceremony was warm and golden, the kind of day that feels like it’s wrapped in sunlight from the moment you open your eyes.

  • Accidentally Yours, Hockey Captain   Chapter 189: The First Step Back

Alex’s POV The official notice came on a quiet Tuesday morning — plain, clear, final. I sat at the kitchen table and read it twice, my hand resting over Emily’s where it lay on the wood beside me. All allegations against Alexander Voss and Emily Sterling are substantiated as true. No charges will be brought. Both names are fully cleared of any wrongdoing. William Sterling faces multiple charges including fraud, coercion, and embezzlement. His assets are being dissolved. His control over the league, the team, and the gallery is terminated effective immediately. I set the paper down slowly. Emily turned her hand over and laced her fingers through mine, squeezing gently. “It’s real,” she said, soft but sure. “It’s all gone, Alex. He can’t touch any of it anymore. He can’t touch us.” I nodded, but my chest felt tight — not with fear, exactly. With something heavier. Something that had nowhere to go now that the threat was gone. “I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. For someone

  • Accidentally Yours, Hockey Captain   Chapter 188: Learning to Breathe

Emily’s POV The first days home felt like holding something incredibly precious — and incredibly fragile — in the palms of my hands. Every moment was soft and blurry, stitched together by sleepiness and wonder and the quiet, constant rhythm of Maya. Time didn’t move in hours anymore. It moved in feeds, in naps, in the tiny, perfect stretch of her arms when she woke, in the way she curled into our chests like she’d never been anywhere else. We were tired — so, so tired. Nights melted into days. Morning light would find us still in bed, tangled together, Maya asleep between us, her little face tucked close to mine. But I never felt alone. Not once. Alex was there, every single time — getting up before I could even shift, changing her diaper with a sleepy grin, murmuring to her in that low, gentle voice that made everything feel safe. He was a natural. Truly. I’d watch him from the bed, half-asleep, as he lifted her into his arms — so careful, like she was made of sunlight — and rocke

  • Accidentally Yours, Hockey Captain   Chapter 187: Maya

Alex’s POVThe hours stretched soft and endless after we walked through those hospital doors — warm lights, quiet voices, the steady beep of machines, and Emily, always Emily, right beside me, gripping my hand so tight I thought my bones might ache. I never stepped away. Not to sit, not to drink, not to breathe without her. Every time she breathed hard, I breathed with her. Every time she squeezed my hand, I squeezed back twice as hard. Every time she leaned back exhausted, I wiped her face, kissed her forehead, told her — You’re incredible. You’re so strong. I’m so proud of you.She didn’t give up. Not once. Even when it was long, even when it hurt, even when she whispered, “I don’t know if I can,” she held on, and I held her, and together we kept going. And then — the room shifted. The nurse’s voice softened. “She’s coming. One more big push, Emily — you’re almost there.”I leaned in, my forehead pressed to hers, my voice nothing but breath. “You’ve got this, Em. Look at me. I’m rig

Emily’s POVMy body moved on its own, hips swaying harder than I ever had before, arms raised like I could push the pain out through my fingertips. • Accidentally Yours, Hockey Captain   Chapter 4: Collision Course

Emily’s POVMy legs felt loose and heavy at the same time as I stumbled back toward the bar. The music pulsed louder in my ears, each beat slamming against my skull. Kara’s warning from moments ago still rang in my head, but I pushed it away. “Another one,” I told the bartender, slapping my hand
