Ever since I was twelve, I made myself a ridiculous promise: I would never become an eighteen-year-old virgin. Well…today is my eighteenth birthday, and I'm still a virgin: no boyfriend, no situationship, not even a decent first kiss. If this were an achievement, I’d probably have a trophy by now. “You have been staring at him for fifteen minutes,” Chloe’s voice jerks me back to reality. I blink, following her gaze across the crowded fraternity house. Straight to Ethan Knight. Royal Haven University’s golden boy. Star quarterback, campus heartthrob—the guy I've secretly loved since freshman orientation. He throws his head back, laughing at something one of his teammates says, completely oblivious to the fact that my entire birthday has revolved around gathering enough courage to speak to him. “he’s so pretty.” I sigh. Kimberly snorts into her drink, “You sound like you are watching a Disney prince.” “He kind of is. He plays football.” “So?” “He probably smells like sweet. Very attractive sweet.” The two of them burst into laughter. “You are hopeless,” Chloe says. Kimberly grins, “I have an idea.” Whenever my best friend says those four words, someone’s life is about to get ruined. Usually mine. I shake my head, “No.” “I have not even said anything.” “I already don't like it.” “If you walk over there and confess to Ethan Knight before this party ends,” she pulls out four hundred-dollar bills from her purse, “these are yours.” My eyes widen, “and if I don't?” “You pay us four hundred dollars.” I nearly choke on my drink, “Four hundred dollars? I don't even have four hundred dollars!” “Then you’d better confess.” My jaw drops, “You two are evil.” “We prefer motivational.” I look back at Ethan, still laughing, still perfect, completely out of my league. And my heart does that stupid, strange thing again. “What if he says no?” Neither of them answers immediately; then Chloe shrugs, “At least you will finally know.” My stomach twists. She’s right. If I don't confront him now, I will never know if he likes me or not. Yet I remain glued to my seat, with my pulse pounding loudly in my ears. Maybe he likes me too. Or maybe I’ve been delusional this whole time. Before I can lose my nerve, Kimberly suddenly places both hands on my back, “Go.” My eyes nearly pop out, “What?” She shoves me hard, and I stumble straight into the middle of the crowd. Every conversation dies. Every head turns, including Ethan’s. His hazel eyes meet mine. Oh God. At least fifty people are watching. Maybe more. I should run. Actually, I'm going to run, I spin around. “Skye.” His deep voice stops me cold. I freeze. Did he… did Ethan just say my name? Slowly I turn back. He smiles politely, “You looked like you wanted to tell me something.” My heart begins sprinting faster than any football player ever could. This is it. I either become the happiest girl on earth or the biggest clown in the history of Royal Haven University. I swallow hard, “I….” My fingers twist around the hem of my skirt. “I've liked you for a long time.” Silence falls. Slowly, his smile fades, and I know it, before he even speaks; I do. “You have….liked me?” he asks carefully. I nod, “so…maybe…” my voice shakes. “maybe we could hang out sometime?” He exhales slowly, “I'm sorry, Skye.” Four simple words, yet they hit harder than a punch. “I think you are really a sweet girl,” his voice is gentle, almost apologetic, “but I don't feel that way.” The world suddenly feels so quiet. “Oh.” It’s the only thing my brain could produce. “I've never wanted to give you the wrong idea.” I force a smile that probably looks more painful than convincing, “It’s okay.” It’s not. Not even close. “I’ve always seen you as,” he hesitates, “a little sister.” Something inside me cracks. Around us, people whistle, another person snorts, then another. Within seconds, whispers spread through the crowd like wildfire. “She got rejected.” “I knew she wasn't interested.” “Did you see her face?” Heat floods my cheeks. No. No. Please don't let this become a scene. I laugh, a horrible fake laugh, “right….of course.” I take a shaky step backward, “We are basically family,” my voice doesn't even sound like mine anymore. Another laugh erupts behind me; someone has already pulled out their phone, the tiny camera lens points directly at me. Oh God. They are recording. My stomach twists violently. I need to leave, now. “I'm sorry,” I mumble, though I don't even know who I'm apologizing to. I turn so quickly that my leg catches on the edge of a chair; my ankle twists. The room spins in my vision. I pitch forward and slam face-first onto the hardwood floor. The sound echoes through the fraternity house. For half a second, silence. Then laughter explodes—loud, merciless. My palms sting. My knees burn. But neither hurts as much as the humiliation crushing my chest. I stay on the floor, wishing it would open and swallow me whole. Then, a pair of expensive black sneakers stop inches from my face. The laughter begins to die. A cold, dangerous voice cuts through the room. “What the hell is so funny?” Silence. Complete silence. I don't look up. I can't. Not after becoming the biggest joke on campus.Skye Jace is not wearing the football jersey anymore. Instead, he has on a plain black T-shirt that clings to his broad shoulders, his damp hair pushed back as though he’d just showered. The setting sun cast long shadows across the empty stadium, making his gray eyes look almost silver. These things never affected me before. I've known Jace since forever and I never noticed how breathtaking he is. What the hell is wrong with me? I shake my head, refusing to succumb to this stupidity. Jace looks at me without surprise. “I knew you would come.” The confidence in his voice immediately irritates me. “You are so full of yourself.” The corner of his mouth twitches, “Thanks for the compliment.” I fold my arms, “I haven't even agreed.” “No? Then why are you here? Miss me?” My nose wrinkles in disgust, I would rather jump off the bridge. I open my mouth to say something. Nothing comes out. Yet his question hangs in the air. Why am I here? After several awkward seco
Skye “I won't do it.” The words leave my mouth before I can second-guess them. Jace doesn't react. He watches me with those unreadable gray eyes, as if he’d expected that answer all along. “I’m not going to pretend to be your girlfriend Jace,” I say, making sure he heard me quite well. Silence falls. The breeze sweeps across the football field, lifting loose strands of my hair into my face. Around us, the last two players are leaving practice, throwing curious glances our way before disappearing into locker rooms. Jace finally slips his phone back into his pockets “Fine.” I blink, “Fine?” “You made your choice.” his voice is calm. Too calm. He brushes past me without another word. For a second, I simply stand there, staring after him. That’s it? No sarcastic remark. No argument. No trying to convince me. He just…. Walks away. Something about it unsettles me far more than if he’d kept fighting. My eyes follow his retreating figure until he disappears bene
Jace The first thing Mason does is punch me in the shoulder. Hard. “What the hell was that for?” I shove him away. He grins, “For making the greatest announcement in Royal Haven history.” The rest of them burst into laughter. We had barely finished football practice when every single phone on the field started buzzing. Nobody cared about the drill anymore. Nobody cared about the championship. They only cared about one thing. Me. I grab my water bottle and empty half of it down my throat. “So….”Logan drawls, throwing an arm around my shoulders. “You have finally gotten yourself a girlfriend?” “I’ve had girlfriends.” “Not the one you announced to the entire campus.” The guys whistle. Mason pulls out his phone, “Listen to this,” he clears his throat dramatically, “Jace Knight publicly claims mysterious freshman after dumping queen bee Tiffany Bentley.” Another person whistles. Logan laughs, “Man, you’ve got the entire campus losing its mind.” I snatch t
Skye Kimberly’s face pales. “Skye…” “I have to.” “I can’t pretend to be his girlfriend.” “He’ll get over it.” “So will the school.” Before either of them can argue, my phone vibrates inside my pocket. Once. Twice. Three times. I frown. Slowly, I pull it out and The screen lights up. ROYAL HAVEN STUDENT FORUM PINNED POST Official announcement. Jace Knight: “ Skye Bennett is my girlfriend. Anyone who has a problem with that can deal with me.” Below it, Over two thousand likes. Hundreds of comments. And still climbing. My blood runs cold. Kimberly leans over my shoulder. “Oh…” Chloe reads the screen. “He actually meant it.” I stare at my phone so long my eyes begin to burn. What sort of problem is this? Even after the screen goes black, I still continue to stare at it. Several moment pass, nobody speaks. Not me. Not Chloe. Not Kimberly. The only sound is the distant whistle from the football field. Kimberly is the first to break the silence. “He actually posted it.”
Skye I jerk away from Jace so quickly that my shoulder slams into the wall. “Ouch.” Heat floods my face. Chloe’s eyes dart between us—Jace and me. His hand still rests against the wall where my head had been just seconds ago. Kimberly slowly blinks. “You two were about to kiss.” “We were not!” I nearly shout. Jace doesn’t deny it. He simply pushes himself away from the wall and stuffs both hands into his pockets. Kimberly points dramatically between us. “You.” Then at me. “You.” Then back at him. “What exactly is going on here?” I open my mouth. Nothing comes out because, honestly, I don’t know. Jace answers instead. “We were talking.” Kimberly snorts. “Really? Because from where I was standing, it looked like one very intense conversation.” Jace merely shrugs. “If that’s what you want to call it.” I shoot him a glare. “This is your fault.” “I know.” “You’ve completely ruined my life!” “I know.” “And you don’t even care!” He looks at me for a second, long enough to
Skye I don’t know how long I stand there. Five minutes. Maybe ten. The hallway is so quiet I can hear the ticking of the old clock hanging above the stairwell. Then, the sound of footsteps echoes. Heavy. Unhurried. I don’t have to look up. I already know who it is. Jace. He stops a few feet away. Neither of us speaks. The silence stretches until it becomes unbearable. Finally, I lift my head. “What was that?” His eyebrows lift. “What was what?” “Don’t play dumb.” “I’m not.” “You told everyone I’m your girlfriend!” “So?” “So?” My voice rises in disbelief. “You don’t get to decide something like that!” He shrugs, completely unfazed. “It worked.” “It worked?” I almost laugh. “You call this working?” “Tiffany shut up.” “At the cost of my reputation!” He folds his arms. “Your reputation was already gone the second she posted those pictures.” His words hit like a slap. I stare at him. “You’re unbelievable.” “I’m realistic.” “No.” I shake my head. “You’re cruel.” A muscl
