The Lycan king glared at me, not saying a word in return and fear prickled my skin. Oh no, don’t tell me I’d gotten on his nerves? I should have thought of a better way to present the proposal. Heck, maybe I shouldn’t even have considered it. Now, he knew of my identity. If this got to my father, I don’t want to imagine what would happen… “How are you so sure I need an heir?” I was on the verge of laughing it off as a joke and disappearing from the face of the earth if I could when his chilling voice cut through my thoughts. “Or let me ask you this, what makes you certain I’d want to have anything to do with you, a complete stranger who no less could be a decoy?” He added, folding his arms and I might have thought he had a cold demeanor before but right now, he was terrifyingly intimidating. For a split second, my brain short-circulated. Lucky for me, almost immediately, I regained my composure. “With the rumor everywhere, I don’t think it is exactly a secret,” I told him before continuing. “As for your suspicions, think about it— I’ve already risked my identity by doing this. If I were a mole, you could expose me, strip me of my title, and have me hanged in front of the entire pack. I know that, and I still came.” I squared my shoulders with false confidence and stared at him expectantly. But he shook his head. “Not convincing enough.” He uttered in a snide sharp voice. That caused me to shift in my seat. “How else do I convince you?” I asked quickly, a nervous bile forming in my throat. But then one of his guards chose that time to appear. He leaned close to the Lycan’s ear yet his voice wasn’t nearly quiet enough. I heard everything. “King Maximus, I’m sorry to interrupt but you have to get back to the house now. There’s an emergency.” The guard whispered to him, and I didn’t think my heart could beat any faster. The Lycan wasn’t going to leave me here, was he? There was a twitch in his jaw and surprisingly, he simply waved the guard off. “Prepare the carriage. I’ll be there shortly.” The guard left, almost reluctantly and his gaze returned to me. “By telling me your agenda. I need to know why and what you hope to gain by doing this.” He said, his tone demanding. I wouldn’t say I hadn’t expected him to ask. It’s just, I wasn’t mentally prepared to tell him. “Actually, the thing is…” I started, the mere memory of the incident causing a crushing feeling in my chest. “My mate betrayed me. I thought he loved me but it was my best friend all along and yet he never, even once, showed it. Not until my father’s throne that he was after was taken by my brother, the rightful successor. That was when he dumped me for her. And now I find myself completely hopeless, especially with betraying my father’s trust on the line. You’re the only one who can help me. I want to turn things around. I…I want to exact my revenge on them.” I shuttered the words, hating that I could hear the fear in my voice. Fear that my reason might not be enough for him. His brow drew together and I could see his eyes were full of more questions and caution. He’s a powerful figure. My heart raced erratically just thinking about what height and more power I’d get just by bonding myself to him. I remembered my first encounter with him. There was so much spite on his face and he looked like he could eat me alive. I hated him at that first interaction too. Matter of fact, I still do, which was the more reason why I couldn’t believe the same man was now the only person who has the ability to either save or destroy me. I felt his gaze boring into me, scrutinizingly, as if he wanted to be sure I was even worth the consideration. When his lips finally parted, I braced myself for his answer. “I’ll give you a few days to think about this over. You have to be sure you know what you’re getting into.” Giving me a warning look, he said, rising to his full length. A few days?! Unless some miracle happened and my father’s mind changed, I would have been disowned by then. My heart plummeting to the pit of my stomach, I quickly ran after him. “No, I don’t need to!” I half yelled in panic, catching his hand to stop him. When I realized what I had done, I jerked my hand away and bowed my head in apology. “I’m so sorry. I...it's just I already knew what I was sticking my feet into before coming to you and as it is now, time isn’t on my side.” I stared at the floor, my eyes burning with tears I could barely hold back. I knew I couldn’t let him see me as a weakling. No ruler would want someone like that as a partner… even a pretend one. But I couldn’t stop it. Because if I didn’t do this, if he didn’t let me have this chance, I would become nothing but a disgrace to my family… to the entire pack. And as much as I hated to admit it, he was my last hope. I might have come from a high-ranking family, but being a she-wolf made me practically invisible. To be honest, I was tired of feeling insignificant. Tired of being treated like a piece of furniture, expected to stay put, behave and uphold the family’s image at the same time. If my brother could become an Alpha, and be so precious in my father's eyes, why couldn’t I? “Please, marry me immediately, Lycan Maximus.” I said after a pause, this time with far more resolve. I watched his eyes darken further, an entertained snarl forming across his devastatingly handsome face. The look sent a chill down my spine... For the first time since making my proposal, I found myself wondering if I truly understood what I had just gotten myself into.ELODIEMy breath hung in my throat as Lycan Maximus’s lip came down on mine. I didn’t see it coming. But I guess I did want it. He had asked me a question, and I was literally hypnotized by him. I had told myself I was going to stop. Told myself we have a contract binding us together and that was all that should matter. Only to discover my heat had come. And when wolves are in heat, they are uncontrollable. That must be it. I couldn’t have wanted him knowing it’s against the rule of…My thoughts trailed off the Lycan’s hand lowered from my face and slipped down my waist. He lifted me in the air, eye level but with his mouth still connected to mine. I didn’t know if to call it an enticement this time but I couldn’t make any attempt to pull away either. He sat on the couch, placing me on his lap so that my legs were by his sides. And then, the kiss continued. His fingers moved in slow motion along my spine, giving me a chilly sensation as his lips captured my bottom lip. My eyes
MAXIMUS I didn’t know what the fuck I was thinking when I left Elodie alone in my room. I just knew I wanted her to be safe. But now, as I ran from one room to another looking for Cassidy, I wasn’t so sure of Elodie’s safety anymore. I started to think about going back and bringing her along with me. Only it wasn’t the safest choice. Her staying by my side in a moment like this was exactly the fastest way to put her life in jeopardy. Especially coupled with the fact she had put her pregnancy at risk once. I couldn’t bare to imagine what the second time might result to, so letting her remain in my room was like the best option there could be. “Your Highness.” A guard bowed his head in regard as I skidded past him.“Have you seen anyone suspicious around? Like a maid under camouflage?” I asked, sparing him a glance over my shoulder. His face wrinkled, as if in disbelief that there had been an infiltration, before he shook his head.I didn’t wait a second longer and continued my sea
ELODIEI didn’t know what I was about to do. I just knew I ran back inside the house. The second I was inside, I shut the front door hard and looked at the two guards positioned there, standing facing each other. “No one should be allowed to exit. One of you should also monitor the back door. Get back up if necessary.” I said in a rush, making sure my tone filled the atmosphere with both warning and urgency. “Got that, Luna.” They both bowed their heads in unison. With that sorted, I left them to carry out my orders and fled to Lycan Maximus’s room. When I got there, he wasn’t in his room. Where could he have gone? I could feel my chest tightening now, panic creeping in. If it was really Cassidy I saw, I could find her on my own. She is dangerous. How she had put my pregnancy in jeopardy was still fresh in my mind. Yet. I couldn’t stay away without doing anything could I? I might have assigned the guards to put the house on a lockdown, but that didn’t mean Cassidy wouldn’t fi
ELODIE“What are you doing here?” I glared at him. My brother was draped in a white shirt, blank pants and staring at me with a charming smile. He now had a noticeable chin stubble but aside that, he hadn’t changed that much. Except that I noticed he’d gotten a bit lean. The kind that shows he must have been going through a lot of stress lately. Still, that didn’t stop me from maintaining my stance, my hand holding even more tightly onto the doorknob. Damian sighed as if he expected my reaction. “Yes, I know you have the right to be angry. But can you please hear me out first?” I stared at him with a flat expression. Then reluctantly looked behind me, “Excuse us, Payden.” She nodded, about to heed when Damian cleared his throat. “I want us to speak outdoors.” My head snapped to him. “Do you think you have a choic—” I was cut off midway when he grabbed my hand, dragging me through the hallway with him. Does he have any idea what he’s doing? I only gave him the chance to lay do
ELODIEIt was late. I supposed every one would have gone to their rooms to rest. But three maids were waiting outside my room’s door for me when I stepped inside the house. I was wet. Messy and disheveled. As much as I would have loved if I didn’t come across anyone, since I couldn’t exactly undo it, I didn’t stop walking. “What’s going on here?” I questioned as I stopped in front of them. They all gave respectful bows before one of them took the lead and spoke, “The Lycan King asked that we take care of you.” My expression distorted into confusion at that instant. Lycan Maximus brought me to the house himself. I might have came in before him but one could basically say that we arrived at the same time. So how could he have ordered them something like this within such a short duration… My thought was abruptly cut off as it dawned on me. Mind-link. He must have mind-linked them. After getting off his back like that and adamantly entering the house on my own legs, I didn’t expec
ELODIEBefore I could sell myself out any further, I snapped. “Why would I be jealous?” I scoffed ridiculously, moving past him and weaving through the lake before he could get to me. Jealous, my foot. “Well if you say you aren’t.” Lycan Maximus uttered in a way akin to disbelief, so quietly I almost didn’t catch the words. I sighed, stepping onto the shore. “I am not. Believe me or not,” I firmly told him, my eyes lingering on his smug expression before darting over to Payden. I was shocked to see she was still frozen in the same spot. “Are you going to keep kneeling there?” For the first time, I felt annoyed at her. How would Lycan Maximus believe she had nothing to do with my decision to skinny dip if she was going to continue wallowing? Catching the fury in my voice, Payden hurriedly scrambled off the ground. Shaking my head, I turned back around to see the Lycan king was far ahead. I instantly grabbed my top and started walking whilst putting it on, the sound of Payden ambl
MAXIMUSAs the silence stretched between us, I let my eyes trail over her body which was wracked with silent sobs, my expression unreadable. I broke one of my rules on our first encounter. I regarded someone of low rank. Although some other times, I could have allowed my men to put her in her plac
ELODIE Silence crashed down and I remained frozen for a second, unable to get air into my lungs. How was this possible? How had he gotten his hands on the result? H…had the doctor conducted the test already, way before I gained consciousness?! No! No, this mustn’t happen. “What are yo
ELODIE“What test? There’s nothing wrong with me,” I said almost immediately. Although I kept my expression calm and almost serene, a flicker of annoyance crossed my face. “But if you continue to insist,” I added coldly, even as my voice nearly trembled, “You’ll be leaving me with no choice but to
ELODIEI kept running until a loud, broken sob ripped from my chest.I had no idea where I was, but I knew I hadn’t made it home. Yet. I tried to keep running, needed to, but my body betrayed me. My legs wobbled underneath me, my lungs burning and making it impossible to breathe properly.Slowly,
