As the silence stretched between us, I let my eyes trail over her body which was wracked with silent sobs, my expression unreadable. I broke one of my rules on our first encounter. I regarded someone of low rank. Although some other times, I could have allowed my men to put her in her place, I actually stepped in. Not only did I spare her a few words—doesn’t matter that they were degrading—I let her off the hook, seeing as she looked disastrous enough. What I didn’t expect, however, was for her to actually have an identity. Damian, the newly appointed Alpha’s sibling. Or even go as far as seeking me out. For something like this. I didn’t know if she just wasn’t repulsed by me, but her audacity and reckless boldness intrigued me. Despite how much I hated to admit it. Not to mention the apprehension radiating from her body, her face drained of color as she waited for me to respond to her pleas. Apparently, she had more to lose in this bargain. I had very little, but even so, why does she have the belief I was going to give in? And why was I still standing here? For all I knew, my guard, Jake, had come to alert me of an emergency. I had to go now or… “If you’re wondering how I was going to give you the heir, then I must let you know, I’m pregnant.” She blurted out all of a sudden, finally summoning the courage to look up at me again. “You are…?” I drawled, catching as a drop of tear fell on her cheeks. When she nodded, my heart skipped a beat. She had already thought everything over. She wasn’t just reckless, she had this desperation to climb her way out of the loophole she must have gotten herself into. Strangely, I found myself tempted, swayed, the hair on my skin coming alive with anticipation. No one was supposed to find out about my inability to have an heir. But it happened, and even though the officials under me who leaked the secret ended up dropping dead, I shouldn’t have expected the rumor they had spread to have died along with them. It had taken all the restraint I had been able to muster to not lose my will of staying on the throne, and now hearing that she was willing to help me secure my position as the Silver Moon’s Lycan King, I’d be insane to let this opportunity slip away. I sucked in a deep breath, as if to confirm I was truly going ahead with this. When I finally opened my mouth, my voice came out firm and authoritative. “My men will pay your home a visit tonight. Pack and take whatever is dear to you, because you would be coming with them. To my pack.” “Really?” A gasp escaped her, one filled with disbelief. “Thank you so much, Lyca…” But I was already gone before she could finish. After what had happened in the past, this was the first time I’d lett myself get close to a she-wolf again, and keeping a mental note to myself it was going to be the last, once the contract duration which I was still going to discuss with her was over; I stepped into the waiting carriage. Jake kept his eyes on the road but I could still feel the occasional glances he casted over his shoulder at me. That was when it dawned on me. “What was the emergency?” I asked immediately, hoping it wasn’t already too late. “There was an assasination attempt on Beta Eros. Luckily he managed to escape, but he’s badly injured and the pack’s healer has suddenly disappeared.” The revelation caused my jaw to lock, my teeth grounding together. It’s been decades since there was an attack in my pack. The last assassins that infiltrated were taught a harsh lesson and never lived to tell the tale. I had taught it would serve as a lesson if not for a lifetime, but as long as I ruled, but I was wrong. My Beta was suddenly attacked overnight. For someone who always had his guard up, I couldn’t have seen this coming. “If by any chance Eros is still alive, take me to him.” I told him, a tinge of impatient in my voice. I watched his expression shift. There was hesitation and something close to anxiety. “I…it’s dangerous. There might still be a few of them lounging around—” Anger erupted in my chest. “Take me there, Jake. It’s a command, not a discussion!” He looked at me briefly before his shoulders slumped in resignation. Knowing there was absolutely nothing he could do to change my mind, he pulled the reins to turn the carriage back around. Pine trees lined the path. When the gate to Eros’ house opened, a cold apprehension crept through me. The mansion wasn’t that massive and yet it was beautiful. Gardens sprawled around it, and framing tall windows. Eros was always by my side at the pack house. Never thought the first time I would visit his home would be when he’s clinging to his last breath. I stepped out of the carriage and turned to Jake. “Wait here. I’ll check on him and be back in a moment.” He bowed in acknowledgment and I left. When I entered the house, I met Eros in a worse condition. Fortunately, I still had a few minutes left to either heal him or watch death take him. I couldn’t afford the latter. I did the necessary and was going to leave him to recuperate when his frail hand touched me. Suspicious, I quickly lowered myself over his body until my ears were close enough to hear the sound of his panicking breath. Eros looked around as if he didn’t trust the walls, then whispered shakily, “It’s the Gemma. H…he planned my assasination to threaten yo…” He didn’t finish his sentence. He trailed off, instantly seeping into a deep sleep. A necessary effect of the healing. Even as I joined Jake in the carriage and we journeyed back to the pack house, my heart wouldn’t slow down. Not from fear, but from the imagination of the disaster that would have befallen the pack under my rule if I hadn’t accepted her proposal. Eros might not have completed what he was telling me but I already knew everything, just from the mention of my Gamma, Tristian. I have always known if the pack was going to rise against me because of my failure to give them a successor, it would start from my very own officials and second-in-commands but I never expected it to happen this soon. No matter what, I wasn’t going to let their plot see the light of day. Even if it meant having to break my own promise and trust another she-wolf— again.ELODIEMy breath hung in my throat as Lycan Maximus’s lip came down on mine. I didn’t see it coming. But I guess I did want it. He had asked me a question, and I was literally hypnotized by him. I had told myself I was going to stop. Told myself we have a contract binding us together and that was all that should matter. Only to discover my heat had come. And when wolves are in heat, they are uncontrollable. That must be it. I couldn’t have wanted him knowing it’s against the rule of…My thoughts trailed off the Lycan’s hand lowered from my face and slipped down my waist. He lifted me in the air, eye level but with his mouth still connected to mine. I didn’t know if to call it an enticement this time but I couldn’t make any attempt to pull away either. He sat on the couch, placing me on his lap so that my legs were by his sides. And then, the kiss continued. His fingers moved in slow motion along my spine, giving me a chilly sensation as his lips captured my bottom lip. My eyes
MAXIMUS I didn’t know what the fuck I was thinking when I left Elodie alone in my room. I just knew I wanted her to be safe. But now, as I ran from one room to another looking for Cassidy, I wasn’t so sure of Elodie’s safety anymore. I started to think about going back and bringing her along with me. Only it wasn’t the safest choice. Her staying by my side in a moment like this was exactly the fastest way to put her life in jeopardy. Especially coupled with the fact she had put her pregnancy at risk once. I couldn’t bare to imagine what the second time might result to, so letting her remain in my room was like the best option there could be. “Your Highness.” A guard bowed his head in regard as I skidded past him.“Have you seen anyone suspicious around? Like a maid under camouflage?” I asked, sparing him a glance over my shoulder. His face wrinkled, as if in disbelief that there had been an infiltration, before he shook his head.I didn’t wait a second longer and continued my sea
ELODIEI didn’t know what I was about to do. I just knew I ran back inside the house. The second I was inside, I shut the front door hard and looked at the two guards positioned there, standing facing each other. “No one should be allowed to exit. One of you should also monitor the back door. Get back up if necessary.” I said in a rush, making sure my tone filled the atmosphere with both warning and urgency. “Got that, Luna.” They both bowed their heads in unison. With that sorted, I left them to carry out my orders and fled to Lycan Maximus’s room. When I got there, he wasn’t in his room. Where could he have gone? I could feel my chest tightening now, panic creeping in. If it was really Cassidy I saw, I could find her on my own. She is dangerous. How she had put my pregnancy in jeopardy was still fresh in my mind. Yet. I couldn’t stay away without doing anything could I? I might have assigned the guards to put the house on a lockdown, but that didn’t mean Cassidy wouldn’t fi
ELODIE“What are you doing here?” I glared at him. My brother was draped in a white shirt, blank pants and staring at me with a charming smile. He now had a noticeable chin stubble but aside that, he hadn’t changed that much. Except that I noticed he’d gotten a bit lean. The kind that shows he must have been going through a lot of stress lately. Still, that didn’t stop me from maintaining my stance, my hand holding even more tightly onto the doorknob. Damian sighed as if he expected my reaction. “Yes, I know you have the right to be angry. But can you please hear me out first?” I stared at him with a flat expression. Then reluctantly looked behind me, “Excuse us, Payden.” She nodded, about to heed when Damian cleared his throat. “I want us to speak outdoors.” My head snapped to him. “Do you think you have a choic—” I was cut off midway when he grabbed my hand, dragging me through the hallway with him. Does he have any idea what he’s doing? I only gave him the chance to lay do
ELODIEIt was late. I supposed every one would have gone to their rooms to rest. But three maids were waiting outside my room’s door for me when I stepped inside the house. I was wet. Messy and disheveled. As much as I would have loved if I didn’t come across anyone, since I couldn’t exactly undo it, I didn’t stop walking. “What’s going on here?” I questioned as I stopped in front of them. They all gave respectful bows before one of them took the lead and spoke, “The Lycan King asked that we take care of you.” My expression distorted into confusion at that instant. Lycan Maximus brought me to the house himself. I might have came in before him but one could basically say that we arrived at the same time. So how could he have ordered them something like this within such a short duration… My thought was abruptly cut off as it dawned on me. Mind-link. He must have mind-linked them. After getting off his back like that and adamantly entering the house on my own legs, I didn’t expec
ELODIEBefore I could sell myself out any further, I snapped. “Why would I be jealous?” I scoffed ridiculously, moving past him and weaving through the lake before he could get to me. Jealous, my foot. “Well if you say you aren’t.” Lycan Maximus uttered in a way akin to disbelief, so quietly I almost didn’t catch the words. I sighed, stepping onto the shore. “I am not. Believe me or not,” I firmly told him, my eyes lingering on his smug expression before darting over to Payden. I was shocked to see she was still frozen in the same spot. “Are you going to keep kneeling there?” For the first time, I felt annoyed at her. How would Lycan Maximus believe she had nothing to do with my decision to skinny dip if she was going to continue wallowing? Catching the fury in my voice, Payden hurriedly scrambled off the ground. Shaking my head, I turned back around to see the Lycan king was far ahead. I instantly grabbed my top and started walking whilst putting it on, the sound of Payden ambl
ELODIEThe Lycan king glared at me, not saying a word in return and fear prickled my skin. Oh no, don’t tell me I’d gotten on his nerves? I should have thought of a better way to present the proposal. Heck, maybe I shouldn’t even have considered it. Now, he knew of my identity. If this got to my f
ELODIE Silence crashed down and I remained frozen for a second, unable to get air into my lungs. How was this possible? How had he gotten his hands on the result? H…had the doctor conducted the test already, way before I gained consciousness?! No! No, this mustn’t happen. “What are yo
ELODIE“What test? There’s nothing wrong with me,” I said almost immediately. Although I kept my expression calm and almost serene, a flicker of annoyance crossed my face. “But if you continue to insist,” I added coldly, even as my voice nearly trembled, “You’ll be leaving me with no choice but to
ELODIEI kept running until a loud, broken sob ripped from my chest.I had no idea where I was, but I knew I hadn’t made it home. Yet. I tried to keep running, needed to, but my body betrayed me. My legs wobbled underneath me, my lungs burning and making it impossible to breathe properly.Slowly,
