Chapter 5

Andrew.

Meet me at the lighthouse point tonight. Five minutes. Please.

She almost didn't go. She stood in her room with the phone in her hand for a long time, telling herself all the reasons this was exactly the kind of choice that had ended her last life, and went anyway — not because some old, worn-down part of her still wanted to, though it did, but because she was done being someone things simply happened to. If this ended tonight, she wanted to be the one who ended it.

The point was empty when she got there, wind coming hard enough off the water to pull strands of hair loose from her braid. Andrew was already waiting, hands in his pockets, looking out at the dark the way he used to when they were sixteen and the whole world still felt like it belonged to them.

"You came." He didn't turn around right away.

"I came to end this." Her voice came out steadier than she felt. "Not continue it."

That got him to turn.

"End what, exactly?"

"Whatever you think is happening between us. There's no dance, Andrew. There's no version of this year where I—"

"Careful." Something in his voice had gone very quiet. "You're about to lie to both of us."

"I'm not—"

"You check your hip every morning." He said it plainly, almost gently, the way you'd point out something obvious. "Right side. Just above the bone. Looking for that stupid butterfly you won't get inked for another two years." A pause, and when he spoke again his voice had lost every trace of warmth it had ever had for her. "I always hated that tattoo."

The wind kept moving. Blair's whole body went very still.

"How do you—"

"The same way you do." He took a step closer, and for the first time since she'd woken up in this life, she saw the man who'd locked doors and meant it, standing exactly where the boy used to. "I remember everything, Blair. Every year. Every single thing you did to get me. And I remember exactly how it ended for both of us."

"Andrew—"

"Did you really think you could just wake up and be someone else?" His voice climbed, sharp enough to startle a bird out of the rocks below. "Sofia is alive right now because I haven't let you near her yet. That's the only reason. Not because you changed. You don't change, Blair. You just get better at hiding what you are."

"That's not—"

"I am not going to let you do it again." He closed the last of the distance between them before she could step back, close enough that she had to tip her head to hold his eyes. "Not to her. Not to me. I'd rather end you first."

"Let go of me."

She hadn't realized his hand was around her wrist until she tried to pull free and it didn't give.

"Andrew, you're hurting me—"

"Good." Quiet. Almost gentle. Entirely wrong.

She slapped him before she'd decided to. The sound of it cracked out over the water, loud enough that for one suspended second neither of them moved at all.

Then his grip tightened hard enough to bruise, and he shoved her back a step against the low stone wall at the cliff's edge, and the fear that went through her then had nothing old or familiar in it at all.

"Andrew, stop—"

Headlights swept the point before he could answer her. A car door. Footsteps that weren't hurrying, because they didn't need to.

"Let go of her." Alessandro's voice carried across the dark without being raised at all.

Andrew's hand came off her wrist like it had been burned.

Two men Blair hadn't heard arrive were already flanking Andrew before he'd finished turning around, and Alessandro walked past all three of them like they were furniture, stopping close enough to Blair that she could see exactly how little of the calm from his office was left in his face.

"Are you hurt?"

She shook her head. Her wrist said otherwise.

Alessandro looked at it for exactly one second too long, and something moved behind his eyes that had nothing to do with old debts or thirty-day deadlines.

"I don't know who you are," Andrew started, and one of the men shifted just enough to remind him he did, in fact, know exactly who this was.

"You put your hands on something that belongs under my protection." Alessandro didn't look at him while he said it. "That's the only fact that matters to me tonight. Walk away from this point, and consider very carefully whether you want to still be in this town by morning."

Andrew looked at Blair once — not afraid, not yet, something closer to fury barely leashed — and walked.

It was only once the sound of his car had faded down the cliff road that Blair's legs stopped agreeing to hold her up. She caught the stone wall instead of the ground, breath coming in pieces, hands shaking too hard to be still no matter how tightly she pressed them together.

"Hey." Alessandro's voice had dropped the ice out of it entirely. "Look at me. You're safe."

"I'm fine."

"You're not," he said, not unkindly, "and you don't have to be, right now."

She didn't cry. She'd promised herself years ago, in a different dark, that she wouldn't do that in front of people who could use it against her. But she stood there shaking on a cliff above the water, and let a man she didn't trust at all be the only steady thing in reach.

"That debt your father owes me," Alessandro said quietly, after a while, watching Andrew's taillights long gone from the road below. "Consider it paid in full as of tonight."

"Why?"

"Because whatever that was," he said, "it just became my problem too."

Blair looked at him — at the calm, controlled stranger who had just told a man twice his warmth to leave town or disappear — and understood, with the same total clarity she'd felt walking out of his office four days ago, that whatever had started that morning hadn't ended tonight either.

It had only just started belonging to both of them.

Blair woke to the smell of coffee and the sound of someone humming badly off-key two floors down, and for one disoriented moment thought she was home before she remembered whose home this actually was.Nicoletta was already at the stove when she came down, still humming, waving a wooden spoon at the chair across the counter without turning around. "Sit. Eat. You slept later than I expected — that's a good sign, actually. Means your body finally believed you were safe enough to stop keeping watch.""I didn't realize I was that obvious.""You weren't, to most people." Nicoletta set a plate down, considering. "I've just had a great deal of practice reading people who've learned not to relax around a room."Blair didn't ask how she knew what that looked like. Something about the flat, practical way Nicoletta said it made it clear the answer wouldn't be a comfortable one, and this morning, comfortable was exactly what Blair wanted to hold onto a little longer."Where's Alessandro?""Making

The house sat above a curve of coastline Blair hadn't known existed, gates swinging open before the car had even fully stopped, warm light spilling out from every downstairs window like the place had been expecting company for hours. It hadn't, as it turned out."You couldn't call ahead?" The woman who opened the door before Alessandro reached it was small, silver-haired, and entirely unbothered by the hour. "I would have made something better than leftovers.""Mamma, this is—""I know who she is." Nicoletta's eyes moved over Blair once, quick and assessing in a way that felt nothing like her son's version of the same thing. "The whole town knows who she is by now, tesoro. You're not nearly as quiet about your business as you think you are." She stepped back to let them in, already reaching to take the bag out of Blair's hands before Blair had thought to offer it. "Come in, come in. You look like you haven't had a real meal in days. Both of you, actually — look at him, he's gotten thi

The note was under her pillow, which was the part Blair couldn't get past no matter how many times her mind circled back to it. Not the porch. Not the mail slot. Under her pillow, in a room with a locked door and a man stationed at the end of the street whose entire purpose was making sure nothing like this could happen. She'd found it making her bed, the way she had every morning of her life, and for one stupid, ordinary second she'd thought it was a note from Fiorella before she'd actually read it.Tell your new friend to mind his own business. Some debts don't transfer. No signature. Handwriting she didn't recognize, careful and slanted, nothing like Andrew's loose scrawl on the birthday card still sitting unopened in her drawer. She had the number dialed before she'd fully decided to call it."Yes.""Someone was in my room." Her voice came out flatter than she felt, which was somehow worse than if it had shaken. "While I was asleep. There's a note."The silence on the other end la

Rosa found her in the church square two days later, breathless in the way of someone who'd been saving up gossip since sunrise."Nobody's seen Andrew since Sunday." She said it like a headline, dropping onto the bench beside Blair without being invited. "His mother came by ours yesterday asking if he'd said anything to me. She looked like she hadn't slept.""Since Sunday." Blair kept her voice even with an effort that cost her more than it should have."Mm. You'd know better than me, wouldn't you." Rosa's eyes cut sideways, sharp under the gossip. "Word is you two had some kind of falling out. A real one.""Something like that."Rosa waited a beat, clearly hoping for more, and when nothing came she sighed and moved on to Renzo's latest theory about the missing church bell rope instead. Blair heard none of it. Somewhere under her ribs, a very old, very familiar dread had started counting days since Sunday right alongside her.* * *The receptionist above the harbor didn't check her nam

By the second morning, the man at the end of the street had stopped pretending to be casual about it.Blair watched him from the kitchen window while her mother refilled a coffee neither of them wanted. Same dark car. Same unhurried patience Alessandro's men all seemed to share, like it had been taught to them in a single afternoon."You don't have to go out today," Fiorella said, not for the first time."I'm going to the market. It's daylight. There's a man watching the house whose entire job is apparently watching the house." Blair reached for her bag before her mother could build a better argument. "I can't live in this kitchen for thirty days, Mamma."Fiorella didn't stop her. She did, notably, watch her all the way to the end of the driveway from the window, which Blair chose not to mention.* * *She smelled the citrus stall before she saw who was standing next to it."You've got some nerve."Sofia stood with her arms crossed, sunglasses pushed up into hair too perfectly arrange

The car smelled like cedar and salt. Blair sat very still in the passenger seat while her hands finally stopped shaking enough to fold in her lap, and neither of them said anything until the lighthouse road had given way to the ordinary dark of the coast highway."You didn't have to drive me yourself." It came out quieter than she meant it to."No," Alessandro agreed, eyes on the road. "I didn't."He didn't offer anything else. Blair found, oddly, that she didn't need him to."Why does this matter to you?" she asked, after a while. "The debt's paid. You could've had your men drive me and gone home.""I could have.""But?""But someone put their hands on a person standing under my protection, in front of witnesses, after I'd already said the words out loud." He said it evenly, like reciting a law rather than an opinion. "If I let that go, I might as well stop using my name.""Is that the only reason?"For the first time since the point, something almost like amusement crossed his face,
