Chapter 216

Author: Aurora Wells
Julian's expression darkened as he stared at me. "Evelyn, I thought you said you loved me? And yet here you are with Miles already—what, were you two sneaking around while we were together?"Without thinking, I slapped him.

He grabbed my wrist, sneering coldly. "Did I strike a nerve?"

I laughed in anger. "I shouldn’t have let Miles in the car earlier. If I hadn’t, the one slapping you right now would’ve been him."

Julian let go of my hand and said coolly, "Enough nonsense. Evelyn, dragging this to court would just be a spectacle. After five years of marriage, I don’t want things to end like this."

Was he trying to reconcile?

I forced down my fury and asked, "What do you have in mind?"

Julian hesitated, his gaze complicated. "I’ll return everything that belongs to you... just give me some time."

I was stunned.

I hadn’t expected Julian, who always seemed so tough, to willingly give up fighting and hand over what I deserved.

I went quiet. "Alright. How much time do you need?"

Julian tugged

He gently lifted me and placed me in the wheelchair.I froze. Everyone else in the room froze too.Miles turned to Trey and said, “Handle it. Don’t make it hard for her.”That “her” was clearly referring to Amy.Miles pushed me out of the hospital room. Behind us, I could still hear the faint sound of Amy crying.…By the time we got home, my mind was still foggy, like none of it had really happened.“Tired?” Miles suddenly asked.I looked at his expression and nodded. He carried me over to the couch and set me down gently. A small smile tugged at his lips. “Sit here for a bit.”He took off his suit jacket and disappeared into the bathroom. A moment later, he came back with two warm, damp towels.I stared at him, confused, not sure what he was doing.Miles gave a soft, helpless smile. “Silly girl. You come home and forget to wash your face and hands?”As he said it, he gently started wiping my face and hands for me.The warmth of the towel slowly brought me back to myself. After a w

A familiar dull ache stirred in my chest. My voice came out strained. “Miles, I’m not falsely accusing anyone.”He had every reason to doubt me. I’d said one thing, then contradicted it, circling back and forth in a way that left everyone confused. No one knew what I was trying to do, except me.I was baiting Amy and watching her reactions. One reaction wasn’t enough, but if I twisted my words enough times, she’d eventually slip. And she did, just like I expected. In trying too hard to find holes in my words, she got tangled in them instead. Her agitation gave her away.It was the same kind of reaction Chloe used to have whenever she tried to manipulate me, deliberately triggering my emotions to trap me in her web of words. Now, I was sure that Amy had the brooch.Miles stared at me with those cool, unreadable eyes, until at last, something in them softened. He took my cold hand gently, voice low and calm. “Alright. Eve doesn’t make baseless claims. Take your time.”Amy panicked. “S

I said to Dolly, “Right now, we just need to stay calm and find the brooch. Nothing else matters.”Hearing that, Dolly started pacing with me, both of us deep in thought.Suddenly she moved toward the bathroom to take a look. I slowly shifted myself closer, watching as she searched every corner, even picking up the mop and shaking it out.She sighed in frustration. “Nothing. Where the hell did she hide it?”I frowned, racking my brain.Just then, everyone returned to the room.Amy was no longer crying—she even had a hint of a smile on her face. Miles looked as calm as ever, but Trey stood behind them, his face dark with anger. One of the officers approached me politely. “Miss White, we’ve just finished Miss Lane’s statement. We’d like to ask you a few questions as well.”I looked straight at Amy, not saying a word. I just kept my eyes locked on her.Her smile faded quickly, replaced by visible unease. She glanced toward Miles instinctively.Miles furrowed his brow, about to say som

Dolly finally couldn’t hold it in any longer and snapped, “If you’re not guilty, why are you so scared of giving a statement?”Amy’s eyes immediately filled with tears. “I… I really didn’t steal anything. Why do I have to do this?”Dolly was about to fire back again, but I quickly grabbed her.I turned to Miles, who was clearly not in a good mood. “Dolly’s just blunt. I’ll take her out for some air.”Miles gave a slight nod.But then Amy suddenly said, “Miss Dolly should give a statement too. She could be a suspect. Why isn’t she being questioned?”The second the words left her mouth, Dolly’s face turned bright red with fury. She charged forward, ready to argue, and I panicked, wrapping my arms around her waist.Dolly forgot about my injuries—one tug from her and I was pulled right off the bed.A searing pain shot through my thigh. It felt like something had torn. I couldn’t help crying out.Only then did Dolly realize what she’d done. Remembering my stitches hadn’t been removed yet

Miles’ voice turned cold. “Why did you give it to Eve?”Trey stammered. I suddenly spoke up, “Because Trey’s going abroad with Tina. He asked me to keep it safe for him. It wasn’t a gift—something that valuable, I wouldn’t dare accept.”Miles glanced at me. I held his gaze, forcing myself not to look away. His expression finally softened. He looked at Amy. “Amy, did you take it or not?”Amy shook her head, eyes full of hurt. “No. Sir, you have to believe me. I really didn’t take it. I won’t take something that expensive. I know I’d go to jail if I did.”Worried he still doubted her, she added, “My mom used to be called a thief all the time. I’d never do something like that.”Miles seemed to remember something. He let out a sigh. “Get up. The floor’s cold.”Amy blinked, then quickly wiped her tears and stood up.But after sitting too long, she stumbled as she rose and fell straight into Miles’ arms.He reached out instinctively to steady her.Her tanned face flushed deep red, and she l

Trey snatched the phone from her hand and glared coldly. “Every time something happens, you run to my brother? You think he’s just sitting around waiting for your calls? Amy, the size of your ego is unbelievable.”Amy froze. She stared at Trey in disbelief. “You… you yelled at me? Mr. Wynn never yells at me.”She looked utterly devastated, covering her face like she wanted to cry but was forcing herself not to.Dolly and I exchanged looks—neither of us had expected this side of her.Trey sneered. “My brother holds his tongue because he still shows you a little sympathy. But me? I don’t owe you a damn thing. “So cut the act. Give it back, now. Or things are going to get ugly.”He was clearly losing his patience.Instead of backing down, Amy grew even more stubborn.Tears streaming, she began dumping the contents of her bag onto the floor. “I didn’t take it! I swear I didn’t! How would I know Miss White had something so valuable in her bag? I’m not a thief! Wuuu…”I looked at the mess
