Chapter 266

Author: Aurora Wells
It was rare, almost unbelievable, to see the arrogant Trey buying gifts just to apologize.

I said, "That whole thing wasn’t even your fault. You don’t need to apologize to me."

Trey grumbled through the phone, "They’re already sent. Will it kill you to accept them? I’ve never had a woman return my gifts before. Don’t be the first."

I couldn’t help laughing. "Seriously? Are you insane? You spent all that money, and now I’m telling you to take it back, and you’re refusing?"

He insisted, "You’re keeping them. No discussion."

I nearly screamed. "I can’t! Miles will be pissed if he finds out."

To my surprise, Trey immediately offered, "He won’t. I’ll teach you—just complain about how awful my taste is whenever he’s around. The more you hate it, the happier he’ll be."

Wait a second…

Something felt off.

I asked, "Trey, are you trying to use me and these gifts to get your brother to forgive you?"

There was a two-second silence on the other end.

Then Trey snapped, "Evelyn, why do you have to ge

I clutched my chest, face pale.“I… I should’ve checked my horoscope before leaving the house.”Dolly leaned in and peeked through the door, spotting the advisor talking to an older professor with a full head of white hair. She turned back to me. “What’s wrong? Who did you see?”My voice trembled. “I saw Linda! I actually saw Linda Lee!”“Linda?” Dolly clearly didn’t register the name right away.“It’s her—the third heiress of the Lee family! She’s here!”Dolly’s eyes widened. “You’re kidding! Are you serious? What are the odds? Is the algorithm tracking us in real life now? We show up somewhere, and it just summons people?”I let out a nervous laugh. “What do I do now? Why would she be here? Didn’t she just move back from overseas? Wasn’t she still studying abroad?”Dolly didn’t know how to respond to my lovesick ramblings.Just then, the advisor stepped out and said, “Evelyn, Professor Sharp would like to see you. He says he used to teach you.”I glanced at Dolly, who gave me a look

Half an hour later, I met Dolly at the entrance of Hilton University. The moment she saw what I was wearing, she stared at me like I’d lost my mind. “Evelyn, are you insane? What are you wearing?” She reached for my coat and hat. I quickly covered myself. “Don’t… don’t! I caught a chill last night.” Of course, Dolly didn’t buy that nonsense. It wasn’t even winter yet, and Riverdale’s autumn heat was still going strong. She gave a sudden tug and then froze. A second later, she burst out laughing. Flushed and annoyed, I tightened my coat around me. “Don’t laugh! What’s so funny? If you kept laughing at me, I’ll gouge your eyes out.” Dolly tried to hold back her laughter. “Spill it. Who gave you all these hickeys?” I groaned. “Can you not ask? Please? I… I’m going home.” Mortified, all I wanted to do was flee. But Dolly wasn’t going to let me off that easily. She grabbed my arm, beaming. “Come on, tell me the truth. Was it Mr. Wynn? Did he go full vampire on you l

He looked at me and asked, "What’s the plan for today?"I thought for a moment. "Go to the hospital for a check-up, then head to school."I showed him the class schedule on my phone.Miles frowned slightly. "The new semester doesn’t start for a few more days. Why go so early?""I want to get the reading list from my advisor and start studying on my own."Miles nodded approvingly. There was a trace of relief in his eyes—after what happened last night, he’d been worried I might be thinking of something else. That was probably why he insisted on staying with me the whole night. After breakfast, he told me, "Don’t worry. I’ve got everything under control."Then he left the house in high spirits. As soon as he was gone, I let out a long breath. I didn’t have the appetite to touch the remaining food. I sat quietly by the floor-to-ceiling window, watching the traffic and bustle below. The world was so busy, yet I felt like a useless failure that everyone resented. This couldn’t go on.Ho

Once the door shut, my heart finally started pounding for real.I hurried to lift the blanket off Miles, terrified I might’ve smothered him.But when I moved the pillow, he was grinning.Flustered and furious, I snapped, “What the hell are you smiling at?! Tell me, how did you go from that end to here?”Even in the hospital, Miles had always kept his distance. He'd have the nurses bring in an extra bed just to sleep beside me. Now? He was getting bold, sneaking into my bed like it was no big deal.He looked completely satisfied, lazily rubbing his eyes as he stared at me, puffed up with rage. Then, without warning, he reached out and pulled me into his arms, leaning in to breathe in the scent at the curve of my neck.My body turned hot all over. I squirmed, trying to wriggle away."Don’t move," he said, voice husky and low. "Or I’ll eat you."I froze, caught between running and melting into a puddle.“Just stay. Lie with me a little longer.”There wasn’t much I could say to that, so

I let out a sigh, defeated and resigned. At last, my hair was dry and the night had grown late, yet Miles still hadn’t returned to the guest room. I changed into my pajamas, hugged my comforter, and looked at him.He looked calm. “I’m sleeping here tonight.”I was speechless. After a long silence, I mumbled, “I’m not a kid anymore. You’re not going to try anything in the middle of the night, are you?”“No,” he replied simply. Then he grabbed a pillow and set it down—at the foot of the bed, as if to prove his point.I exhaled. “How childish.”Miles suddenly gave me a smile. “Until you’re truly free, I won’t touch you.”I muttered, “Feels like there’s no point in holding back, is there?”Miles sat up, eyes narrowing slightly as he looked at me. “And what exactly do you mean by that?…”I caught sight of his half-unbuttoned collar and quickly lay down, shutting my eyes. “Nothing. I didn’t mean anything. I’m just tired. I’m going to sleep.”I turned off the light.A moment later, I felt M

I quickly pulled away from him, dropped onto the vanity stool, and began towel-drying my hair, tugging my robe tightly around me in the process. Miles sat down in the chair beside me, silently watching. I avoided his gaze, but inside, my thoughts were a tangled mess. Without a word, he took the towel from my hands and began drying my hair himself. I blinked. He was gentle. First, he patted the ends to absorb the water, then carefully worked his way up with slow, deliberate strokes. Finally, he reached for the hairdryer. “No, I’ve got it.” I snatched it from him before he could switch it on, half afraid I’d completely lose it if he so much as tried. Miles’ gaze darkened. “Eve, you’re still upset.” I kept my eyes on the floor. “I’m not. I’m really not.” He took the dryer from my hands and suddenly leaned in, closing the distance between us until my back pressed up against the vanity. His eyes were stormy, unreadable. I let out a tired breath. “What do you want t

The Wynns had always been a model of discipline—an old-money family known for its spotless reputation, untouched by scandal. So, it was almost unthinkable that someone like her had managed to sink her claws into the next generation. No wonder the hostess hadn’t wanted to face the guests tonight.…Upstairs on the second floor of the Wynn estate, Marsha stood with her jaw tight, locked in a transatlantic phone call. The call was from Ronald himself. The moment the incident had happened, the ever-efficient house steward had already reported it across the globe. His voice came through the line, cold and clipped.“What are you going to do about this?”Marsha spoke slowly, without panic. “Ronald, your son’s the one acting out of line. Why are you calling me instead of chewing him out?”Ronald’s tone stayed icy. “You have five minutes. Start explaining.”She remained composed. “There’s nothing to explain. That woman is not coming into this family—divorced or not. "And let’s be clear, she ha

The rest of the conversation faded into a muffled haze, like my ears had suddenly been wrapped in gauze. Everything around me sounded distant, unclear. My vision blurred. My head buzzed. Shame—raw, overwhelming—hit me like never before. It was that same feeling I’d had at five years old, when my mother took me to a neighbor’s house. I’d been losing baby teeth, couldn’t help sneaking a bite of cake, and the neighbor’s son caught me in the act. "Oh, so this is the kind of girl you are—cheap and shameless.""Oh, you’re a thief, trying to take something that was never yours."The mocking voices in my head grew louder, laughing cruelly. I vaguely heard Miles say something, then felt him pull me away from the Wynn estate. By the time I sat in the car, the fog in my mind had started to lift. Miles was staring at me, silent and intense. I wiped at my eyes. “I’m fine.” He let out a long breath and pulled me into his arms. “I’m sorry.” I managed a weak smile. “Hearing an ap

The girl pouted when Miles didn’t hug her back. “Mice, aren’t you happy to see me?” Miles replied calmly, “I am. I just don’t understand why you didn’t tell me you were coming.” She beamed. “Because I wanted to surprise you!” Her smile bloomed like spring. “Aren’t you surprised?” I couldn’t tell what Miles was feeling, only that he clearly didn’t want to keep the conversation going. He replied flatly, “Very surprised.” She finally seemed to pick up on his tone and frowned. “You don’t seem very happy.” Still composed, Miles answered, “Not at all. I’m fine. But you’re underdressed—why don’t you go put on something warmer?” Only then did the girl seem to realize how little she was wearing. She laughed. “It’s fine, I’m used to it… ah-choo—” She sneezed again an again. Without a word, Miles pulled me a few steps farther away. She looked up and, for the first time, noticed me. Curious, she tilted her head and studied me. “Mice, who’s this lady?” She stepped closer
