I couldn't take my eyes off the phone screen.

Just ten minutes earlier, Sonya Slade had complained to me on WhatsApp.

"Honey, the bus smells awful. It reeks of sweat, and the AC is broken. I'm dizzy and nauseous. I really miss our car."

I had been in a meeting when I saw her message. I felt terrible for her and even blamed myself for not arranging a driver in advance.

I had been beating myself up over nothing, while she had another man in her arms.

I closed my eyes and tried to push down the ache in my chest.

Once I calmed down, I called my assistant and asked him to check Sonya's recent spending.

Maybe she had gotten too comfortable with the life I had given her, and she had started thinking she could get away with things she shouldn't.

Seven years earlier, Sonya had been so poor she couldn't even afford her college tuition.

I was the eldest son of the Latham family, while she came from a poor family. Sonya only made it through college because I paid for her education.

Back then, she had stood before me in a faded shirt, her gaze clear and determined. She swore to spend the rest of her life repaying me.

I supposed she was keeping that promise after all.

She was repaying me with lies and betrayal, using my money to support another man.

I opened the social media profile of my neighbor, Simon Hunt.

That selfie was still there.

One of our mutual friends commented, "Wait, is something going on between you two?"

Simon replied with a shy emoji. "She's just my older sister who takes good care of me."

An older sister?

I laughed in disbelief.

Sonya was an only child. How had she suddenly acquired a younger brother?

"Mr. Latham."

My assistant, Carter Price, knocked and entered with a stack of documents. He took one look at my grim expression and spoke cautiously.

"I have the credit card records you told me to look into."

I took the documents, drew a deep breath, and opened the file.

Sonya had always been fiercely proud.

In three years of marriage, she had never once used the unlimited credit card I had given her.

She had looked at me with quiet defiance.

"Mitchell, I want to make it on my own. I don't want people thinking I married you for money."

Back then, I was deeply moved by her words. I had even defended her pride in front of my dad and given her a general manager position at one of Latham Group's subsidiaries.

But last month, that supposedly untouched credit card had racked up one shocking charge after another.

The transactions took place in Harborton between the 16th and 18th of the previous month.

The 16th was my birthday.

I had planned to spend my birthday in Harborton, but Sonya had told me an urgent project at work was in trouble. She claimed she had to handle it herself, and there was no way she could get away.

She hugged me then, looking full of regret. "Honey, I'm sorry. I can't spend your birthday with you this year. Once things settle down at work, I'll make it up to you. I promise."

That night, I sat alone at home with a melting birthday cake, waiting until midnight.

In the end, all Sonya sent me was a WhatsApp message.

[I just finished work, and I'm exhausted. Happy birthday, honey. I'm sorry.]

"Mr. Latham…"

Carter glanced at my increasingly dark expression and lowered his voice.

"There's something else. Mr. Hunt was in Harborton last month, too. He posted quite a few updates, and his location tags line up almost perfectly with the places Ms. Slade used the credit card."

I closed the file and shut my eyes.

When I opened them again, my gaze had hardened.

"Get in touch with a private investigator," I said calmly.

"I want solid proof that Sonya is cheating on me. Get every piece of evidence you can, and make it as detailed as possible.

"One more thing."

I paused and looked down at the diamond ring on my left ring finger.

Sonya had bought it with her first month's salary. It cost only a few hundred dollars, but I had worn it for three whole years.

"Tell the legal team to draw up a divorce agreement."

A month later, Shackleton was deep into its rainy late autumn. Cold rain tapped against the floor-to-ceiling windows, blurring the lights outside.I sat beside the warm fireplace with my golden retriever, Bobby, lying at my feet. The doorbell rang for a long time before I finally sent the housekeeper to answer it.Sonya stood outside, soaked to the skin and looking utterly miserable. She had grown so thin that she was barely recognizable. Her eyes were sunken, and her hair was a mess. When she saw me, a spark of hope lit up her dull eyes. Her legs gave out, and she collapsed to the ground. "Mitchell! Mitchell, I'm sorry. I know I messed up!"She tried to crawl toward me, but the housekeeper stopped her."Mitchell, please forgive me! Simon is a liar. He had an STI for a long time, and I lost the baby. He had been lying to me the whole time!"Sonya's voice was hoarse with despair.Just a week earlier, Simon had stolen the last of Sonya's personal savings. She had borrowed that

Three days later, Sonya came to see me.She looked much worse than before. Several scratches still marked her face, souvenirs from the fight at the hospital that day."Mitchell, we should sign the divorce papers as soon as possible," she said. She avoided my gaze, sounding uneasy.I raised an eyebrow and set down my coffee. "What? You saw those photos and still put up with him?"A flash of embarrassment crossed Sonya's face, but it soon gave way to an almost stubborn resolve."Simon explained everything to me. Those things happened in the past. Everyone had a past, right?"She took a deep breath, as if trying to convince me, though she seemed to be trying to convince herself more."He said the other person faked those chat records just to show off. Besides, I'm carrying his child.""So?" I gave her a faint, knowing smile. "You've forgiven him?""Mitchell, you know Mom has always wanted a grandchild." Sonya looked miserable. "Simon is the baby's father, and he's been emotional

Simon stayed at the hospital to take care of Sonya. When I went to see her, Sonya was propped up in bed, eating a bowl of dessert. As I entered the room, Simon deliberately caressed her still-flat belly, his gaze challenging me."Mitchell, I'm sorry you had to spend so much. Sonya said you had this dessert sent over just for her? Honestly, I'm not picky. As long as it's from Sonya, I'll love it."I showed no reaction. Before I could even say a word, Sonya hurried to intervene. She was afraid Simon would upset me and ruin our fake divorce."Simon!" she scolded him sternly. "Mitchell is doing this for us and for the greater good. You should be grateful!"Simon froze. He never expected Sonya, who usually gave him everything he wanted, to snap at him for my sake.Tears welled up in his eyes almost immediately. "Sonya, how dare you yell at me? Are you still hung up on this infertile guy?"He shouted, "Fine! If you're going to keep taking his side, then I'm leaving!"With that, he m

Three years ago, I was badly hurt in a car accident. It was late at night, and I was trapped inside the car, unable to move. The pain had been unbearable.I called Sonya for help. However, she thought calling an ambulance was too much trouble. She was also worried about being late to meet an important client, so she said she'd come get me herself.Halfway there, she got a call from the client. He wanted to grab a late-night bite and asked her to come along.By then the pain in my lower body had become so intense that I'd lost all feeling. I was also barely conscious.I sent her a voice message, begging her, "Sonya, I don't think I can hang on anymore. Please take me to the hospital first."Instead, she replied with a voice message of her own. She sounded annoyed."That client is someone I've worked hard to keep for a long time! Stop being so dramatic. A few injuries aren't going to kill you!"Then she turned the car around and went to eat with the client.I spent two agonizi

Mildred and I both froze at Sonya's words.Mildred's anger instantly turned to delight. "A baby? Sonya, you're pregnant?"Sonya was rushed to the hospital.Outside the ER, Mildred paced back and forth, muttering, "I hope it's a boy."When Simon saw me, he huddled in a corner without saying a word. Sonya was wheeled out in a hospital bed, her face pale. The doctor came out and removed his mask. "The patient has signs of a threatened miscarriage. She needs complete bed rest. Fortunately, you brought her in just in time."At that, Mildred clasped her hands and murmured a prayer of thanks. Sonya also breathed a sigh of relief.Seeing how relieved Sonya was, I felt a slight pang in my chest. Then the feeling faded, leaving no emotions behind."Sonya," I called out to her calmly.Sonya looked up in a panic and reached for my hand, but the hardened look in my eyes made her pull back."Mitchell, I…"I cut her off and looked at her belly without emotion. "Now that there's a baby invo

The next morning, I went to work as usual. As soon as I entered the lobby, Sonya's assistant hurried over. She looked flustered. "Mr. Latham, you're here.""Where's Sonya?" I asked as I headed toward my office."Ms. Slade is…" The assistant stumbled over her words. "She's in her office discussing work."I stopped. "With whom?""With the new assistant, Mr. Hunt," she replied reluctantly.Mr. Hunt? Did she mean Simon? So Sonya wasn't just using my money to support him. She had even brought him into my company."When did he start?" I asked, my voice hard."Just the day before yesterday. Ms. Slade personally arranged a special hire through HR. She said…she said the company needed him."I sneered. I wondered what kind of business she had in mind!I asked no more questions and headed straight for Sonya's office."Mr. Latham, please don't…"Sonya's assistant tried to stop me, but she had no chance.I shoved the door open. Two people were tangled up on the office couch.Simon
