Chapter 4

مؤلف: Bubbles
When I got home, I pulled up my résumé. This time I wasn't limiting myself to companies inside our pack's territory. I started looking at the top firms worldwide.

Then my phone rang.

Lucas.

I forced down the irritation and picked up.

His voice came through, stiff and sharp. "Did you actually quit? Because of a couple of comments? Are you serious?"

"You're upset I was with Catherine today, that's all. I already said I'd be with you. What more do you want?"

"Look — get your dad to help me land this new project. Once I close it, I can clear my debts. Then we can finally be together properly."

The sheer brass of it made my stomach turn.

I kept my voice flat. "You're the one who said we'd be together. I never agreed. Get this through your head: from now on, there is nothing between us. Fated mates don't have to end up together. Stop bothering me."

I hung up before he could speak.

That night, I got an email from an anonymous address.

It was a photo. My mother's grave. A timed explosive sitting beside it.

At the bottom of the email: Come alone. If you bring anyone, it goes off immediately.

The countdown was at two hours.

I didn't have time to think. I grabbed my car keys and drove straight to the cemetery.

The cemetery was empty at night, the lights low and dim.

I went straight to my mother's grave.

Lucas stepped out and blocked my path.

It was him. He was the one who'd planted a bomb at my mother's grave to threaten me.

I hadn't thought he could sink this low.

I clenched my fists at my sides and forced myself calm.

"Lucas. What do you want?"

His teeth were clenched. "Someone caught the whole thing on video that day. Now everyone at the office knows I owe money because I gambled!"

"You're going to kneel in front of this camera and apologize. You're going to tell everyone that you bought Ron off, that you set me up. That the debt wasn't mine!"

"And then you're going to call the partnership, and you're going to tell them I'm running the project."

"In your dreams!"

His face twisted into a grin, and he raised the remote in his hand. "All I have to do is press this. Your mother's grave, her remains — gone."

He moved his thumb toward the trigger.

"Don't! I'll do it!"

I forced the words out through my teeth.

He raised his phone immediately and started recording.

I took a breath. "Lucas didn't gamble. I bribed people to frame him."

He nodded, satisfied, and posted the video straight to the company group chat.

Then I called the partner firm and used my father's name to demand they install Lucas as project lead.

I hung up and looked at him, ice cold.

"Now disarm it."

Greed flickered through his eyes.

"You signed that check earlier without blinking. You must be sitting on a lot."

"I want a check, right now. One million."

He tossed a blank check at me, with a pen.

I signed it without hesitation. One million.

"I give you the check, you give me the remote."

He agreed, easily.

The second the remote was in my hand, the explosion went off in the distance.

He tossed a backup remote at my feet.

"That's what you get for humiliating me in public."

I stood frozen, staring at the column of fire rising over my mother's grave. I couldn't process it.

He took the check, brushed his hands off, and walked away.

I ran toward the grave. The empty cemetery rang with my screaming.

Lucas.

My hand clenched until my fingernails cut into my palm and drew blood.

You want to die? Fine. I would grant you that wish.

The next morning, my apology video had spread through the entire company.

A lot of coworkers were posting complaints to the Council of Elders. I let them.

Three days later, I walked into the celebration party the company was throwing for Lucas's new project.

I went straight up to him while he was mid-speech and took the microphone out of his hand.

"I'm reporting Lucas — for embezzlement of company funds, for failure to support a dependent parent, and for theft of intellectual property!"

Even with Lucas finished, I couldn't find any joy in it. My mother's remains had been wiped from the earth, her headstone shattered to pieces. She had left me one thing — that grave — and now even that was gone. When I got home, I pulled the covers over my head and slept for a full day. It was the only way I could begin to process the grief I'd been pushing down all this time.Dad understood that I wanted to step into the role of heir, and he supported me completely.I threw myself into learning.Pack affairs were a great deal more complex than running an office. I needed an assistant. From the day I saw Ron stand untouched against my Heir's Authority, I'd been quietly looking into his background. Before I could finish digging, he came to me himself and told me everything. He turned out to be the son of the Streamoon Pack's Alpha and his late Luna. His mother had died right after giving birth to him. When he was six, his father took a new Luna. The new Luna decided he was a threat to h

I didn't want to look at Lucas another second. I turned to leave.Lucas thrashed against the warriors. "No! You can't do this!""I have a child! Catherine is carrying my child!"I stopped. So Catherine's little fall had been an act after all. The baby was just fine. There was an unwritten rule in our pack — set by my father, out of compassion — that to keep a pregnant she-wolf stable, to keep her from losing the child to grief or weakness from being separated from her mate, the male was required to remain at her side until the baby was born.Which meant that even if Lucas was sentenced to death tomorrow, the sentence couldn't be carried out until the child was delivered. But all of that depended on the child in Catherine's belly actually being his.I turned back to him, my mouth tilting up just slightly."Lucas. Are you really that confident the baby Catherine's carrying is yours?"He blinked. "What's that supposed to mean?"I raised my voice so the whole room caught it."You probably

Ron didn't show a flicker of nerves under the weight of the room's stare. He faced the projected repayment list and walked through the comparison between dates and amounts clearly, calmly."From April three years ago to October this year, every single repayment date lines up exactly with the dates of the embezzlement on record.""His personal account holds only a few thousand because every dollar of the embezzled funds went straight into paying off his casino debt.""Over these three years, the total embezzled comes to ten million."Lucas swayed on his feet. He looked at Ron, dark and sour."Ron. You leak a client's information like that, and you're not afraid your boss will come after you?"Ron turned to me, voice mild. "Boss. Were you planning to come after me?"I covered my mouth and laughed. "Why would I? You did beautifully."I turned back to Lucas."I forgot to mention. The casino and the mortgage company — I bought both of those out, too. I'm the boss now."His teeth ground toge

In the video, Lucas stood at his father Kane's bedside, hands in his pockets, face cold.Tears streamed down Kane's aged face. His voice was weak, pleading. "Lucas, I'm not asking you to use the money you've earned. I still have the house. Sell it. The healer said the sale would cover my treatment."Lucas didn't even soften the blow. "I already sold the house. I lost the money.""I owe the casino another million right now. I was going to come ask you for more, but it looks like there's nothing left to take."Kane nearly choked. He stared at his son in disbelief. "What did you say? You — you lost my house? That money was supposed to save my life!"Lucas's eyes glittered with calculation, with greed."Dad, you're an old wolf already. Even if we treat you, how much longer have you really got?""I'm different. I'm still young. I am not spending my whole life at the bottom of this pack!""If I win at the casino, I can change everything. I might even climb out of being an Omega someday!""Sh

The room went still. Every head turned toward Lucas. He snatched the microphone back from me, furious."Hazel, what the hell are you talking about?"Catherine recovered fast and slipped right back into the victim role."Hazel, you've already done enough to us. We saw your apology video. We accepted it. What more do you want from us?""Are you not going to stop until we're both dead?"The mention of the apology video tipped the room straight back to her side."Yeah, the video's right there! Hazel, you just can't stand to lose, can you? You came here to make a scene!""We've all seen Lucas's work — how many big projects has he closed for us these past few years? How could he be embezzling?""Right, his father is lying in a hospital bed with no money for treatment. If he were embezzling, why wouldn't his father have the money?"Lucas's smile was pure satisfaction. Then in a heartbeat he turned it around and put on the wounded look. "I never imagined this is what the future heir of our pac
