How awkward it is for two people who get dumb by their lovers to walk into each other, right?
Liana felt the hairs of her body standing still, clueless on what to say to him.
Before she could break the silence, Christian took the initiative to talk.
"Hey. I'm sorry for the drama. Just that..." Before he could finish, his phone suddenly began to ring.
He glanced at the caller ID, and instantly, his expression turned pale. He squeezed his eyes short and exhaled heavily, then reluctantly placed the phone on his ear.
He tried to put off his phone's speaker, but even at that, Liana could hear the conversation from the other end clearly.
"Hey Christian. Have you and Jane sealed your union already? Hurry up and get to Western Marriott Hotel. I've already booked the venue. I've even invited some family and friends, and we're all here waiting for you two." The woman on the other end of the phone retorted.
It was his grandmother.
Christian's body stiffened up. He was dumbfounded and befuddled instantly.
He widened his eyes and looked at Liana, the phone still clung to his ears. He began stammering in disappointment.
"Grandma, the thing is.... I... Jane and I broke up. So there's no..."
“You and Jane broke what? Listen, Christian. I don't care to understand what you are trying to say, but you see this day, you must bring home a wife whether you like it or not! You can't make me invite dignitaries before you can Jane would decide to just go your separate ways. That's insane!” The woman on the other side of the phone bursted out before he could finish explaining himself.
"Hold on." Liana muttered, her voice sharp and calm.
She looked at the certificate in her hands, then raised her eyes to meet the confused gaze of the man standing before her.
"I just got officially divorced. And you–you just got dumbed by the woman whom you planned to exchange vows with, and it's no longer news that both our partners have moved on with their lives."
Christian knitted his brows in a
slight frown. "So, what conclusion are you drawing now?" He asked.
"Let's get married, Mr Christian. Can't you see that the coincidence is too much to be ignored without allowing it to produce a result?" Liana opined, her voice resolute and firm.
Christian was stunned, his mind caught up in a dilemma, unsure whether to accept or decline her proposal.
For a moment, he gave her an awkward smile and sighed, but he was still looking dejected.
"Alright. I support this."
"Do you have your documents with you? Let's go inside and take the vows then." He said and ducked his hand into his pocket and handed the credit card to her.
"Here. You can take the five hundred thousand in it. Consider it your bride price. I'll add the other five hundred thousand later, to make it up to one million."
‘Huh?’Liana raised her brows.
“Where will you get the money to make it up to me? Didn't you just let your fiancee slip out of your hand now because you couldn't afford such an amount? Or…are you planning to break a bank?” She questioned.
Instantly, her mind flashed back to when she married Eric. With all their riches, Eric only gave her $70,000 as bride price. But now, a total stranger is thrusting his card into her hands and offering higher than she had ever imagined.
They both walked into the courthouse. Almost approaching the counter, Liana stopped midway and asked.
"If you're still unsure of this, you can still back down. Please, I don't want any man to marry me out of pity, or because he's stock in choice."
Liana's words were strong but they unexpectedly gave him some courage. "No regrets. Let's get married." He nodded in affirmation.
After some few minutes, they were both out of the courtroom, holding a freshly issued marriage certificate.
Liana blinked instinctively. Everything from last night came flashing in her eyes.
'Wait, did... Did I just get married again?' She asked in the silence of her thoughts.
"Alright. I'm Christian Scott by name. I'm forty five. I work as a.... as an assistant in a textile company. I have a lovely cousin and a very dramatic grandmother. But you don't have to worry. If you don't want to live with their dramas, we can always get our own apartment." He explained, extending his hands for pleasantries.
Liana took his hands slowly, her lips blushing at his words. "I'm Liana Clap...." She stopped immediately when it rang in her head that she just ceased to be part of the Clapton's family about an hour ago. "Sorry. I'm Liana Wyatt. I was a complete house wife, and I currently have no job at hand. But do not worry yourself about taking care of me. I'll soon get a job or better still, start up a business. I already have the capital needed." She explained.
They shook hands and exchanged smiles over their sudden change of status.
"So, we can get going, now, right? My family and the guests are waiting already!" They locked their hands into each other and strode towards two black SUVs parked at one end of the courthouse.
"Hey, I almost forgot." Liana said in panic as they stopped midway.
"I still have my things stuck in Clapton's mansion. If you can, I'd really love that you plead with your family to give us some minutes more. Eric might burn down my things if I don't get them out before the next hour." Her voice trembled with fear.
"Alright.. I'll drive you then."
"No need for that, Mr. Christian. You can just go ahead and join them for some preparations. I can go on my own." Liana knows that there's definitely a high probability of drama erupting from her ex and his lover once she sets foot in that mansion. So, she can't afford to make Christian witness another round of drama again.
One of Christian's men drove Liana to Eric Clapton's mansion after Christian insisted that he won't let her go alone.
As soon as they entered, Liana was met with her belongings scattered on the veranda of the front door.
Eric wasn't home.
"Oh, already found yourself a new man, Liana? Wow, this just tells how desperate you are to remain married." Maya chuckled.
Liana smirked and ignored her, bending carefully to pick up her belongings.
"I just hope your lover doesn't leave you once you exhaust the alimony, though. You should have been wiser by now, Liana. Do you really think you can keep any handsome man to yourself with this ugliness? Go use that money and get some plastic surgery to refine your...."
Before Maya could finish her statement, a heavy slap landed on her cheek, almost twisting her face to the left direction.
"Insult me again, and I'll ensure I don't live here without giving you some permanent marks on the face." Liana roared angrily.
Immediately, the maid brought out Liana's remaining belongings and threw it at her.
"Good for you, you gold digging bitch! At least you know now that you never deserve a place in the Clapton's family!" The maid barked.
Even before now, the maid has always despised Liana for marrying Eric. She has been serving the Claptons for five years and has fallen in love with her master, but unfortunately, Eric's grandmother doesn't like her nor does Eric pay attention to her feelings.
Liana had no choice than to calm her nerves and avoid being too violent in the presence of Christian's staff. She didn't even bother to spare the maid a glance.
Soon, Eric drove in speedily with his BMW and pulled out at the parking lot.
Immediately he drew near, Maya started acting up, holding her belly and forcing fake tears down her cheeks, while the maid held her in a consoling manner.
Eric's eyes turned red instantly at the sight of his crying lover.
"Look, Eric. I told you not to go out because she'll definitely be violent when she comes to do her final packing. Now, she's hit my belly so hard that I almost fell and had a miscarriage, if not for the quick intervention of the maid. She wanted to kill our baby, Eric." Maya cried.
"What? Maya are you..." Liana raised a brow and tried to talk, but Eric cut in angrily.
"Liana, how dare you ..." He marched forward violently to land a slap on Liana's cheeks, but the man that came along with Liana reached out and grabbed his hands immediately.
"Sir, mind the way you react when you just hear a one sided story. Especially not from dubious people like your so-called lover!" The man warned.
For some moments, the environment went cold and silent.
Liana froze at the man's urge to protect her.
Without hesitation, she ceased the opportunity and marched straight to Maya and the maid, and gave them two dirty slaps each.
"Next time, better learn to stay quiet rather than lying on an innocent person!" She warned.
The two women couldn't do anything when they looked at how helpless Eric stood as his hands were being held by the man.
"I knew it, Liana. I knew that you were cheating on me all this while!****" Eric resorted to cursing.
"Enough, Mr. Eric!" The man roared.
"I never knew your ex wife anywhere, but at least as a man, I know better than to hit a woman!" He added and helped Liana with one of the heavy bags as they strode to the car.
"You won't get away with this, Liana. You and your cheap lover should better get ready for this! Eric roared after their departing backs.
