Sophia’s POV

I didn’t get the job.

I kept repeating it in my head, hoping it would eventually lose meaning and stop hurting, but it didn’t. I’d prepared so much for the interview.

I worked twice as hard, memorized everything I could find about the art gallery, made sure my appearance was classy and corporate at the same time. But I still got rejected. According to what a so-called Ms. Azura said, they were looking for someone with even more qualities.

Which means I wasn’t good enough.

  • After the Divorce    Chapter 63: What I Missed

Marcus’s POVThe house was empty when I returned. Lately, it felt like no one lived here.I let out the breath that I was holding, my eyes looking around the empty living room, there was a time that Sophia would have been seated here remote in hand as she laughed at whatever show it was that caught her attention.I shook off the thought, tossing my car keys to the side. Diane wasn’t home. I knew that and thankfully, I was happy that she wasn’t here. It meant that I could breathe.Showering has become a battle, fighting the constant need to succumb to the feeling and just letting my lust take me. I heard the bedroom door opening. “Marcus?” Diane’s voice echoed through.I wiped the stray water from my face, feeling the anger boil in my chest. Why was I getting worked up that she was back? “Marcus” her voice came louder.“In here!” I yelled back. The door opened. Diane stared at me with a bright smile on her face. “Good, you are here. I was wondering if I was the only one home.”I forc

  • After the Divorce    Chapter 62: The New Face

Sophia’s POVMaybe what I needed was a job. Luckily, it came at the right time. Maybe I was getting too excited too early. But working here for two days has made it easier to ignore the things that were happening in my life. My days felt like they had purpose. I would wake before the crack of dawn, make a few meals just before the rest of my housemates woke up. Yes. Housemate, you heard me right. After that awkward dinner we had, calling them this was the best thing I have ever done. Marcus would try as he would to talk to me but I was faster. Always rushing out before he said the words. Wasn’t it ironic? The same way he had treated me a few weeks back. Somehow, a sadistic part of me made me realise that I enjoyed how taunting this moment must feel for him. Each time he opens his mouth to speak, I am already running through the door. “Sophia?” My head snapped in the direction, and I straightened my form, arranging myself as I smiled at the director. “Do you have a minute?” For

  • After the Divorce    Chapter 61: The Distance Between Us

Marcus's POVToday felt different. Not with Diane, not with me. But just different. Like the air was crackling with anticipation of something that would happen.I looked through the emails that had been sent, nothing showed any mishap in any jobs the guys had handled this week. But the feeling still wouldn't leave. Each time I got this feeling, it was always a day before meeting a potential new client.I wasn't meeting anyone new. But I couldn't shake it off. The steps groaned, signalling that someone was coming down. I didn't look behind me, not when I could already feel the tingling sensation down my spine.Sophia. My body had gotten so wound up about her presence that I could find her in the crowd with my eyes freaking closed.“Good morning Marcus,” Her voice was low, soft, as she walked past me toward the fridge.I stared at her for a minute, trying to think through what it was that I was meant to say. “Sophia,” I breathed the name as if it was my freaking lifeline. She didn't l

  • After the Divorce    Chapter 60: The Unread Message

Sophia's POVMy fingers hovered over the message icon. What was he going to say? Did he want to talk, or was this his way of trying to apologise?A thousand questions, and the answer was just a button away. All that it needed was for me to click it open and read through what he had sent.I couldn't. I don't know why. I couldn't bring myself to read it.“Sophia?” The Uber stopped right in front of me, the man smiling softly at me.I heaved a sigh, stuffing the phone back into my handbag. “Yes,” I said, pulling the car door open. This could distract me for a moment.“Are you okay?” he asked, staring at me through the rear mirror.“Yes.” The answer came clipped. Too fast, but I wasn't thinking about how rude I sounded. My phone dinged. Was it Marcus? Just as I tried to click on the screen, my finger touched the wrong icon — Marcus's text popped up. “If you are home, your mother is expecting a package. Sign it for her.”I glared at the screen, wondering what I was seeing. I had spent

  • After the Divorce    Chapter 59: A Message From Him

Sophia’s POVIt was the weekend, but I was wrong. Diane and Marcus walked out the door with stern faces each barely acknowledging the other. It was obvious that they both were yet to come off the billowing train of rage that I had heard in their room.I wasn’t eavesdropping. But they had been loud enough to make sure that I heard everything. I walked into the kitchen, a frown forming on my face as I stared at the plates on the table. They didn’t eat the breakfast I had made. It shouldn’t sting, but it did.My phone dinged, the sound snapping me back to the present. “Hell yeah! We have been begging for months!” Kyla’s reply filled the screen in all caps.“Girl! What have I told you about typing in capital letters?” Lily typed back.“I love it!” Kyla saidI sniggered, watching the text chain increase as they bickered. I needed this. And also, I needed to come clean.***Lily had been the one in charge of finding the best place we could hang out. And she did. Bean’s cafe. Strange na

  • After the Divorce    Chapter 58: Home Too Late

Marcus POV“Dinner was the best thing.” I watched Diane pull off the shoes she had on, a soft smile on her face as she reminisced most of the night. A look that I haven’t seen in so long. “Brian? He is talented. Did you know how easy it was to have the client sign the merger?” Diane broke the silence.I hummed, walking to the edge of the bed, grabbing my phone to check the time one more time. “You know, if anything, the night was ten over ten.” She grimaced. “Other than the fact that I had to eat a few oysters.”“You don’t ever eat oysters,” I pointed out.She hummed. “I don’t, but seeing that everyone on the table was eating them, I just didn’t want to look strange.” She stretched, letting out a loud groan. “You know, in China, when you go on business deals, you have to share a drink with the client. One party has to get drunk to show that they trust the other.”Not in those terms, but I wasn’t in the mood to argue.“So, you thought eating oysters was going to show trust?” I fold

SOPHIA’S POV“Damn it.” I cursed out loud, dropping the mug against the counter when the coffee burned my lips, nearly peeling off my skin.
