SOPHIA’S POV

“Damn it.” I cursed out loud, dropping the mug against the counter when the coffee burned my lips, nearly peeling off my skin. In Los Angeles, Jean once told me it was a sign of bad luck. And as I fumed over the fact that his name still surfaced in my mind, soft footsteps filled the air as my mom appeared at the kitchen doorway, securing her silk robe with a gigantic knot. Jean was right.

Meeting my mom this early was a bigger sign my day would suck.

Her brown eyes met mine. “You’re awake.”

Of course. Does it make sense to be in bed when it is almost noon?

“And you’re home.” I kept my voice dry and distant. “During the weekend.”

She opened the fridge for a bottle of water. She opened the cap, took a small sip, then put it back. “I’ll be heading out soon.”

I almost wanted to laugh.

This conversation isn’t worth my time.

Reaching for the coffee mug I had dropped earlier, I made my way out, but her clipped voice made me halt.

“How long will you be staying here, Sophia?”

She already sounded exhausted.

I’d only been here for four days and she was ready to kick me out.

“Marcus and I haven’t really discussed your stay here, and I’ve been wondering if he’s uncomfortable by your presence.”

A small laugh escaped me. “Why don’t you speak for yourself, mom?

You don’t have to use Marcus as a cover up.”

Tightening my grip on the coffee mug, I whirled around to stare at her face.

Her jaw was set, brown eyes filled with emotions I couldn’t even name. “I know you don’t want me here, but this is my home. Dad would have wanted me here, so please…refrain from asking me about such questions next time.”

I didn’t want her to say anything else. In all honesty, I wasn’t ready to deal with her. I couldn’t tell if she hated the sight of me or the fact that I came back home with no major achievement other than a heartbreak.

Most mothers would welcome their kids with their arms stretched wide and a warm smile on their lips. To survive, I have to walk on egg shells around mine.

Slamming the door to my room with a loud bang, I downed the rest of my coffee and pushed the empty mug against my side desk.

My phone buzzed against the nightstand.

A part of me—the silly, naive part—wished it was Jean. He hadn’t even called to make an apology. He didn’t care about ruining my life. I picked up my phone and it was a message from my girlfriends.

‘Since Sophy’s in town, how about we all go shopping today?

It’s the weekend, we need to have fun before we all get busy. Who’s in?’

I pressed my lips against each other.

I’d rather curl into my bed and watch N*****x all day.

But I needed something else to distract me.

Something apart from my mom, dashingly handsome step-father and Jean.

So I typed on the group chat. “I’m in.”

~~~
“Oh my god, Sophia!!” Lily screamed the moment she sighted me coming out of a taxi.
She laughed as she waved at me, and seeing her again was such a breath of fresh air. She didn’t change one bit. She still loved dying her hair and being goofy.
“Oh, my sweetheart. How have you been?” She enveloped me in a tight hug. “I missed you so much.
Kyla is in the mall already. She’s so addicted to shopping, she couldn’t wait.”
A laugh bubbled out of me. “It’s good to see you too, Lily.”
She hooked her arm around mine, dragging me into the mall. “We’ve got some catching up to do!”
Kyla was checking out a Chanel bag when we stepped in. She had a deep frown on her round face, but the expression disappeared the second she set her eyes on me. “Sophia! You made it, girl.” She dropped the bag to give me a quick hug. “You look so hot.”
“Thanks.” I smiled. “You don’t look bad yourself.”
“So, how’s our star artist and Los Angeles?” She reached for the Chanel bag again, double checking the price as that frown appeared again. “Last I heard, he’s on tour.”
“Yeah.” Lily chimed in. “How’s Jean Beaufort? I can’t wait to hear all the tea about dating a French artist.”
A painful tightness settled at the back of my throat.
“Jean is, uh, he’s—” I pressed my hand against my throat as I stuttered.
Lily and Kyla stared at me eagerly, and that made it harder because I could feel the tears coming again.
“He’s—” I didn’t know if telling my best friends was the right idea, especially since I told them dating Jean was the best decision I’ve made in a long while. “Great,” I lied smoothly, and God it sucked.
“And yes, he’s on tour. It’s part of the reason I decided to come back home for a while.”
“Sophia, are you okay?” Lily asked softly. “You look…pale.”
“Yes.” Even the sound of my laugh was sour. “I’m completely fine. Let’s leave all the men talk and start shopping, alright?!”
“That’s more like it.” Kyla winked, turning back to a blonde lady who seemed to be in charge. “I’ll get this bag in black, brown and white. Can I get some matching shoes as well?” She picked up another bag. “And this Kelly, add it to the list.”
“Still a heavy spender, aren’t you?” I shook my head at Kyla, and she just shrugged, reciting her usual statement ‘money is to be spent. What’s the use of keeping it in your account? It’ll rot.’
And that made Lily and I laugh.
This feels good.
Bonding with them again was exactly what I needed. As long as they don’t find out about what happened with Jean, everything should be fine.
With several shopping bags in our hands, we marched out of the mall, laughing over a show we used to watch as kids.
Then a familiar jeep pulled up next to the mall, designer shoes stepping into our view the moment a tall man came down and approached us.
Kyla and Lily became fan girls next to me.
And I was suddenly brain dead because the man was Marcus, my step-father, who I tried to avoid this morning by going shopping with the girls.
He suddenly paused, thick brows forming a deep v as he stared at me. “Sophia?”
Lily nearly fainted. “Did he just call your name?”
Kyla’s face was red. “I want his contact. You’re with Jean, do you mind sharing?”
My throat closed up as Marcus inched closer. He stood before us, his spicy scent weaved with a manly cologne flipping my insides. “I noticed you stepped out early with a taxi. I could have dropped you.”
“Uh, what is going on?” Kyla directed the question at me, then she gave Marcus a look that screamed hi-handsome. “Who’s this handsome young man?”
I cleared my throat. “Kyla, Lily, meet my stepfather.” I looked into his deep grey eyes. “Marcus.”
The shopping bags hit the ground with a soft thud. “What?!”
  • After the Divorce    Chapter 42: Don’t Let Me Fall
    Sophia’s POVThe sound of the door closing caused my back to tense. My head turned to the door, my eyes meeting Marcus’s watchful gaze. Heat crept up my neck, his eyes lingering on my gym shorts — a pair that no one should see.“Welcome, I didn’t know you would be back so soon,” I muttered, hoping he didn’t hear how flustered I sounded. “How was work?”“Great,” he said in a gruff tone, rushing up the stairs as if he was being burned.I shrugged, fighting back the feeling that I was getting. If he was in one of those moods, I didn’t want to be on the receiving end of it. We had been fine, the call we had earlier in the day was alright. It wasn’t hard getting back to the workout. Kyla had sent the link, said it helped clear the mind, and well, I guess it was working. That was until a certain person walked in and now — “No thinking, focus,” I hissed under my breath.Besides, with the mood he was back in, I knew that he wasn’t going to come down. I guess this would do. The stairs creake
  • After the Divorce    Chapter 41: Before She Gets Home
    Marcus’s POVMaybe I should have done something. Maybe I should have intervened faster. But listening to Diane say those words — watching the way Sophia’s eyes glistened —I knew I had been too slow to react.But this was the thin line — I couldn’t bring myself to actually hold her. In Diane’s eyes, she was going to say I was supporting her, taking a side. Of course, I was. Sophia didn’t deserve the blow-out she had gotten. But my intervention still felt like nothing at the same time. Diane had been cruel. Sophia had been broken… and me? All that I could think about was the kiss that almost happened.I had let myself dream, wondering what would have happened a second later if Sebastian hadn’t shown up. What her lips would taste like — would they taste like cherries? Ever since I knew the name of her lip balm, it had become an obsession that was slowly trying to tear me apart.My phone buzzed, the sound forcing me to tear my gaze from the computer monitor I had been looking at. The s
  • After the Divorce    Chapter 40: Unspoken Truth
    Sophia’s POVI shouldn’t be thinking about it, but I was — my mind stuck on a path it should never have been on. Lying in bed, my eyes fixed on the ceiling as I thought about what last night would have been like. We had been free, the way he had laughed, the way his eyes had taken me in as if he was seeing me. When his hands had cupped my face as if it was the most natural thing to do.“God,” I groaned, feeling that heat creep up my neck, spreading slowly through my cheeks. I turned to my side, pulling the bed cover tighter between my legs, the force causing it to bump against my core. My body trembled from the sensation. This was stupid, having the reaction all because of an almost kiss, but my body didn’t think about that. It just didn’t care. Because the more I thought about it, the more the feeling intensified, the more everything felt too strong to be ignored.He had been close, so close that I could feel just how hard his body was against mine. “Stop,” I whispered in a weak to
  • After the Divorce    Chapter 39: Dangerous Thoughts
    Sophia’s POV “Marcus?” I was hit with an instant cold, the warmth of his fingers gone, my body jerked, my heart hammering hard in my chest at the sound of the voice. I needed to act fast, do something that would make what almost happened look different. “Ouch!” I cried. Marcus frowned as he pulled away slowly, the spell between us broken. I knew it. I couldn’t push it. “Are you okay?” he asked, his voice laced with worry. “My eyes — my lash was trapped between them.” He blew on it, his hand back to my face, holding me gently. But this didn’t feel like it. It didn’t feel like when he had held me with so much warmth. “I think it is gone now,” I muttered, watching a figure walk closer to where we stood. “Okay,” he hummed. He was the first to turn, smiling at his friend. “Hey, didn’t know I would see you around here,” he said. Sebastian didn’t look at him, his eyes were on me as if he was trying to figure out what was going on. “Hello,” he greeted, ignoring his friend. Marc
  • After the Divorce    Chapter 38: Shades Of Temptation
    Sophia’s POVHe looked exhausted. Like a man in a room full of bees and he just doesn’t know how to get out. “You don’t like jazz, do you?” I asked.He tugged on the cuff of his shirt, his eyes meeting mine with a soft smile on his lips. “Did I make it that obvious?”“Well, given the fact that you haven’t stopped huffing each time the sax plays louder, or maybe the fact that you have that look, a constipated look on your face — and most people here look like they are having a time of their lives,” I pointed out.“You have been watching me?”My cheeks flushed, my throat going slightly dry at his accusation. “Not watching, but you make it easy enough to know what you’re going through,” I said.He hummed. “So I can’t play poker then?” he asked.“Maybe.” I reached for the glass of wine, this low talk that we were doing, the dinner, the music, they were all messing with my head. “But I am sure I can read through you,” I added.He smiled, “You are an artist, of course you will,” he muttered
  • After the Divorce    Chapter 37: Cancelled
    Sophia’s POVThe outing had finally made it out of the group chat.I couldn’t stop seeing the smiles on their faces as we laughed at the joke Kyla had shared. “I need to use the restroom,” Kyla said, walking in that direction.“Are you sure you are okay?” Lily’s voice broke through the fog. I stared at her. I could see her eyes on me, watching the same thing she had been doing all night.I smiled, the same practiced smile I had for everything.“Yes, why wouldn’t I?” I laughed.Her eyes narrowed. “You look…” she paused as if she was thinking about what she wanted to say.“Is everything okay at home? Did your mom do something?” I could hear the worry in her tone.I placed my hand on hers, “Everything is great, I have just been a little under the weather… the job and you know…”The lies were getting easier to say.“I can talk to someone — I know a client that works in…”I grabbed her hand.“Don’t do that. Don't put yourself at their mercy, okay? Besides, who said I am not enjoying this l
    Marcus’s POVMy head was a mess. It wasn’t because of Diane or the dinner.It was the tears and the hug— if anything, they made it all worse… and now I didn’t know how to react to it— seeing Sophia so broken, so sad.“For a minute, I didn’t think you would return,” Diane’s voice echoed through the
