LOGINChapter Four — The Welcome Party
Saturday night arrived faster than Beck expected. The championship organizers had decided to throw a welcome party for all the teams staying in town. Which meant one thing. Almost every hockey player in the tournament would be there. Beck stood in front of his bedroom mirror, fixing the collar of his shirt. His phone buzzed. Mason: We're outside. Beck grabbed his jacket. "Coming!" His mother looked up from the living room when he walked downstairs. "You're going to the welcome party?" "Unfortunately." She smiled. "Have fun." "I will." "And be careful." "Always." She raised an eyebrow. Beck laughed. "Okay. Usually." "Better." He kissed her cheek before heading out. The party was already packed when they arrived. Music shook the walls. Players from different schools filled the room, talking, laughing and showing off their school jackets. For once, nobody was thinking about hockey. Beck liked that. He walked inside with Mason and immediately spotted several teammates. Then someone grabbed his arm. "Beck!" He turned. His smile appeared instantly. "Lucas!" Lucas pulled him into a quick hug. Mason grinned. "Here we go." Beck rolled his eyes. "What?" "You two." "What about us?" "You disappear for five minutes and suddenly—" "Shut up." Lucas laughed. Beck turned back toward the crowd. Then he noticed someone standing near the other side of the room. Aitor. Of course. Aitor was surrounded by several St. Aurelia players, but he wasn't really participating in their conversation. His eyes were scanning the room. Until they landed on Beck. Beck lifted his drink slightly. Aitor gave him a small nod. Then Aitor's eyes moved to Lucas. Back to Beck. Lucas leaned closer. "Is that the guy?" Beck looked at him. "What guy?" "The one you've been complaining about all week." Beck sighed. "Valdez." Lucas looked across the room. "Oh." "Exactly." "You really don't like him." "Not even slightly." Lucas smiled. "Sure." Beck frowned. "What does that mean?" "Nothing." Before Beck could answer, the music changed. Lucas grabbed his hand. "Come on." "Where?" "Dance floor." Beck laughed. "Absolutely not." "You're coming." "No." "Yes." "No." Lucas pulled him toward the crowd anyway. Beck eventually gave up, laughing as they disappeared into the group. Across the room, Aitor watched. He wasn't sure why. He told himself it was because Beck was his rival. Because knowing his opponent mattered. That was all. Then someone beside him spoke. "Valdez." Aitor turned. His teammate, Javier, nodded toward the dance floor. "You know Hayes is gay, right?" Aitor's expression barely changed. "No." Javier shrugged. "He's pretty open about it." Aitor looked back. Beck was laughing with Lucas. There was nothing secretive about him. No hesitation. No nervous glances around the room. He wasn't trying to hide anything. He was simply being himself. Aitor looked away. "Oh." Javier frowned. "You didn't know?" "No." "Well, now you do." Aitor nodded. He should have forgotten about it immediately. Instead, the information stayed in his head. Beck Hayes is gay. For some reason, that fact felt strangely significant. He didn't understand why. Later that night, Beck walked outside to get some air. The noise from inside faded behind him. He leaned against the railing and looked up at the night sky. The door opened. Beck glanced over. Aitor stepped outside. Beck sighed. "You've got to be kidding me." Aitor leaned against the opposite railing. "I could say the same." "You following me now?" "No." "Good." Silence. Beck looked at him. "You enjoying the party?" "It's fine." "That's the most enthusiastic thing I've ever heard you say." Aitor smiled slightly. "You seem to be enjoying it." "I am." Aitor nodded. Then, after a pause: "Your boyfriend?" Beck looked at him. "Lucas?" Aitor shrugged. "Yeah." Beck smiled. "He's not my boyfriend." "Oh." "Why?" "No reason." Beck studied him. There was something different about Aitor tonight. Not arrogant. Not competitive. Just... curious. Beck folded his arms. "You know I'm gay, right?" Aitor looked at him. "I know now." Beck laughed softly. "Okay." "What?" "Nothing." "What?" "You're just acting like I told you some huge secret." Aitor looked away. "Maybe it is." Beck's smile faded slightly. "For you?" Aitor didn't answer. Before Beck could ask again, the door opened. Mason stuck his head outside. "Beck! They're looking for you." Beck pushed himself away from the railing. "Coming." He looked at Aitor. "See you tomorrow, Valdez." Aitor nodded. "Tomorrow." Beck disappeared inside. Aitor remained outside. The music continued behind the door. He stared into the darkness. He didn't know why learning that Beck was gay had unsettled him. It shouldn't have. It was just information. Just another fact about his rival. So why couldn't he stop thinking about it?Chapter Twelve — Nowhere to RunFor the first five minutes, neither of them spoke.Beck sat on one of the benches, staring at the locked door as if glaring at it hard enough would somehow make it open.Aitor stood with his arms crossed.“This is ridiculous.”Beck glanced at him.“You've said that three times.”“Because it is.”“Well, repeating it isn't going to unlock the door.”Aitor gave him a look.“You're surprisingly annoying when you're trapped.”“I'm always annoying.”“At least you're self-aware.”Beck rolled his eyes.He checked his phone again.Still no signal.“Someone's going to notice we're missing.”“Eventually.”“Eventually?”Aitor shrugged.“The team probably thinks we left.”Beck groaned.“Great.”He stood and tried the handle again.Nothing.He knocked.“HELLO?”His voice echoed through the empty locker room.Nothing.Beck turned around.“I swear, if we miss practice because somebody forgot to check the locker room…”“That would be your fault.”“My fault?”“You were t
Chapter Eleven — Locked InBy the time Beck reached his dorm room, he had already made a decision.Northwood was going to be different. This was his fresh start. No Westbridge. No high-school tournaments. No constant competition. And definitely no Aitor Valdez.Beck dropped his backpack onto the bed and looked around his room.It wasn't enormous, but he liked it. A bed pushed against the wall, a wooden desk beneath the window, a wardrobe, a small bookshelf, and a noticeboard that was still completely empty. It wasn't luxurious. But it was his.And that mattered. He had earned his place at Northwood. The hockey scholarship had brought him here, and Beck wasn't about to waste it.He began unpacking, putting his clothes away and arranging his hockey equipment when his phone buzzed.NORTHWOOD HOCKEY — TEAM ORIENTATIONTomorrow, 9:00 AM.Beck smiled.Finally.Something he could focus on.Hockey.Not Aitor.Across campus, Aitor had just stepped into his own room.He stopped for a moment.Hi
Chapter Ten — NorthwoodThe campus was bigger than Beck had imagined. Not just bigger.Massive.Buildings stretched in every direction, connected by wide paths lined with trees, benches, and students carrying boxes, backpacks, and enough coffee to survive an entire semester.Beck stood beside his mother’s car with his hands on his hips, staring at the university sign in the distance.NORTHWOOD UNIVERSITY.He had imagined this moment for years.Sometimes when things at home got difficult, he had pictured himself standing here. Sometimes after losing a game. Sometimes after getting his grades back. Sometimes after hearing people talk about how impossible it was to earn a hockey scholarship. And now he was actually here.“Still can't believe it?” his mother asked.Beck looked at her.“Not yet.”She smiled.“You earned this.”Beck looked back at the campus.“I know.”But hearing her say it made something in his chest loosen. He had worked for this.Every early morning.Every brutal practi
Chapter Nine — The Last GoodbyeThe weeks after the championship passed faster than Beck expected. One minute, he was still waking up before sunrise for hockey practice. The next, he was standing in front of his bedroom mirror wearing a graduation gown.He stared at his reflection.Eighteen.Graduating.Going to Northwood University. He still couldn't believe it.The scholarship letter was tucked safely inside the drawer beside his bed. He had read it so many times that he practically knew every word.Northwood wasn't just a university anymore. It was his way forward. His mother appeared in the doorway.“You ready?”Beck turned around.“Almost.”She smiled.“You look so grown up.”“Please don't start crying.”“I wasn't going to.”“You're making the face.”“What face?”“The emotional mom face.”She laughed.“Come here.”Beck walked over and hugged her.She squeezed him tightly.“I’m proud of you.”Beck smiled.“I know.”“No. I don't think you do.”She pulled back and looked at him.“Yo
Chapter Eight — The FinalThe arena had never been this loud.Beck stood at the entrance to the ice, tightening the straps on his gloves as thousands of voices echoed through the stadium. The championship final. One game. That was all that stood between Westbridge High and the trophy. And for Beck, it was more than that.Somewhere in the crowd were scouts.University representatives.People who could decide whether the next few years of his life would look completely different. His scholarship was still uncertain. He had done everything he could. Now he had one final chance to prove that he deserved it.“Hayes.”Beck looked up.Mason stood beside him, helmet tucked under one arm.“You good?”Beck nodded.“I'm ready.”Mason smiled.“That's what I like to hear.”A whistle sounded from the ice.The players began moving toward the rink.Beck stepped forward. Then he saw him.Aitor.Across the ice, wearing St. Aurelia's colours.Black hair.Focused expression. That same irritating confiden
CHAPTER SEVENTHE GAMEThe weekend disappeared faster than Beck wanted it to.By Monday morning, the entire atmosphere around the championship had changed. The semifinal brackets had been posted.Westbridge High had made it.St. Aurelia had made it too.And suddenly, everyone knew what that meant.Beck stood in front of the tournament board with Mason beside him, staring at the names.WESTBRIDGE HIGHVS.NORTH RIDGE ACADEMYOn the other side:ST. AURELIA ACADEMYVS.EASTBROOK PREP“Could be worse,” Mason said.Beck nodded.“Could be.”Mason looked at him.“You're thinking about Valdez.”“No.”“You are.”“I literally just woke up.”“And somehow you're already annoyed at him.”Beck gave him a look.“I don't think about Aitor.”Mason laughed.“You said his full name.”“So?”“You only do that when you're annoyed.”Beck picked up his bag.“I'm going to practice.”“Sure.”Beck walked away.He told himself Mason was wrong. He wasn't thinking about Aitor. Not really. He was thinking about the
