Chapter 1

My brother, John Garrett, heard a noise and looked over in my direction.

Ignoring the system prompts, I instinctively hid in the bushes beside the pool.

When Mom, Amy Dillon, heard that my long-lost sister, Helen Burch, was finally willing to come home, tears welled up in her eyes.

She looked at Dad, Thomas Garrett, who was still frozen in shock.

"Did you hear that? Helen just said she's willing to come home."

Dad snapped back to reality and pulled Helen and Mom into a tight embrace.

John let out a sigh of relief and said to Helen, "You troublemaker. It took us three whole years to finally get you to trust us fully."

My childhood friend, Ivan Jeffson, gently took Helen's hand and teased her, "I pretended to have a broken leg for three years because of you. When we get back, you'd better think of a good way to repay me, my princess."

Helen looked at my parents awkwardly and said, "It's all my fault. I've been so unfair to Nina all these years. If she finds out..."

Mom immediately grabbed her hands and reassured her, "It's not your fault. Your adoptive sister bullied you and left you deeply traumatized. That's why we came up with this plan."

Dad echoed, "Yeah, you're her only sister. It's her responsibility to take care of you."

John comforted her as well. "Don't worry. Nina won't find out."

He picked up his walkie-talkie and instructed, "Send the helicopter to pick us up once the final test ends in three days. Make sure to disguise yourselves as a rescue team from a neighboring country. Don't mess this up, or Nina will get suspicious."

Then he snapped his fingers. A group of maids came up from downstairs and brought over trays of meat for grilling.

The family gathered around the table, enjoying a barbecue feast that looked like it came from a high-end restaurant.

Before long, Helen's plate was piled high with food. She pouted and whined playfully, "Nina always gives me the fish she catches. I'm sick of it. Stop putting fish on my plate."

The aroma drifted over, and I instinctively started salivating. My stomach growled uncontrollably. Acid burned my throat as my empty stomach twisted. I bit my lip hard, and tears silently streamed down my face.

For the past three years, I had barely eaten a full meal.

Ivan had pretended to break his leg, so John and I were responsible for going out to find food.

John always came back empty-handed and covered in bruises, claiming he had run into wild boars or fallen into holes filled with poisonous creatures.

Meanwhile, Helen would often faint because of her "hypoglycemia". I felt sorry for her, so I always gave her my portion of food.

But it turned out Ivan's broken leg, John's injuries, and Helen's low blood sugar were all lies.

Looking at my emaciated body covered in scars, I felt an overwhelming sense of hurt and betrayal.

I wiped away my tears and was about to storm inside and confront them.

Just then, the system prompts flashed again. A Favoritism Meter appeared above everyone inside the villa.

As I moved closer to the villa, the meter decreased. When I backed away, it increased. The higher the meter rose, the more they favored Helen over me.

The system showed me two options.

[Option 1: Enter the villa and expose the truth. Favoritism points drop. Virtual family apologizes. Story continues.]

[Option 2: Walk away and suffer until death. Accumulate enough favoritism points. Virtual family breaks down with guilt. System collapses.]

A memory suddenly flashed through my mind.

Back in the real world, I was an orphan. When I was 13, I found a lottery ticket worth one million dollars. That was when the system's voice suddenly rang out.

[Congratulations on unlocking the system. Would you like to exchange the lottery ticket for a wish?]

I nodded and exchanged the million-dollar ticket for a family.

Looking at the happy family inside the villa, a wry smile tugged at my lips. "Who needs a family like that?"

I asked the system in a hoarse voice, "If I go in there now, they'll feel guilty, but they'll only give me a half-hearted apology, won't they?"

[Yes, Host,] the mechanical voice replied. [That's the key requirement for the favoritism storyline to continue.]

I asked again, "If I choose the second option, will I return to being an orphan?"

The system confirmed it.

I raised my trembling, skeletal hand and selected the second option.

So all I had to do was let them side with Helen and rack up favoritism points? Fine. I'd do that then. What good was an apology? I'd rather be an orphan.

I wiped the blood from the corner of my mouth and limped toward the depths of the forest.

Ivan pushed open the door to the VIP hospital room. Helen immediately leaned back against her bed, pretending to be frail."Ivan... you're here. I've been feeling dizzy all day," she complained.Ivan sat beside her, his expression cold."It was you, wasn't it? The low-boiling-point liquid we used to fake the water... I was the one who bought it and kept it in the villa basement. We used to meet there in secret. Only you and I had the keys." Helen gave him a wounded look and asked, "Ivan, why are you being so harsh? What happened to Nina was an accident. I never meant for any of that to happen." Ivan's gaze suddenly softened. "Helen, I know you did it for us... for our future. I understand. I came here today because your parents have already found the evidence. Tell me everything, and I'll think of a way to help cover for you. I can accept everything about you. Don't you trust me?" Helen immediately threw her arms around him and said, "Ivan, of course, I trust you! Everythi

Three days later, at a morgue in Aloria, the nearest country to the island, the forensic pathologist pulled back the white sheet. It was the first time even he had seen a body in such a state. Yet after years of handling difficult cases, he remained composed and began the examination without hesitation. John had already seen my body before the autopsy. But even after preparing himself for the worst, he still had to clench his fists to keep from passing out when the sheet was lifted. Ivan stared at my body, his eyes red and bloodshot. Tears rolled down his face and fell silently to the floor. For the past three days, he had not slept at all. Every time he closed his eyes, my face would appear in his mind, leaving him sobbing uncontrollably. Off to the side, an assistant held up a digital tablet with my parents on the video call. Despite being hospitalized and hooked up to IV fluids after the devastating shock, they had insisted on hearing the autopsy findings via a video call.

John's eyes widened in shock. "What do you mean by that? What do you mean Nina isn't going to make it?" The wild man swallowed hard and stammered, "M-Ms. Nina… cut the rope and fell into that pot..." His voice shook as he desperately tried to explain himself, terrified that they would hold him responsible for killing me. "The pot was too heavy for me to move. I tried to find something to put out the fire, but there was nothing in the forest I could use. I had no choice but to keep searching until I finally found you…" Ivan let out a breath of relief and spread his hands dismissively."I thought it was something worse. You're so dramatic. That liquid was designed to boil at a certain temperature. It may look like it's bubbling, but it's only around 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Falling in there is basically no different from taking a hot bath." Ivan rubbed his forehead, clearly irritated. "How could you just rush over here like that? What if Nina figured out what was going on?

My skin instantly broke out in blisters. Pain surged through my entire body, and my screams pierced the sky.On the beach, John and Ivan, who were waiting for the boat, immediately turned toward the forest.John remarked, "Did Nina really have to scream like that? She's only tied up there.""Helen was hanging there for so long earlier, and she didn't make a single sound," Ivan remarked. Before they could dwell on it, my parents arrived in a dune buggy, carrying bouquets.John hurried over and asked, "Nina was screaming just now. Dad, Mom, did you see what happened to her on the cameras?"My parents looked completely unconcerned."As soon as you left with Helen, we rushed straight over. We didn't have time to check the cameras," Dad said.Mom shrugged. "Don't worry. The actor you hired is keeping an eye on her. What could possibly happen?"Hearing that, John was relieved. The moment my parents got out of the buggy, they pulled Helen into a tight embrace."Your sister passed y

Before Helen could say anything else, John pushed her away."Helen." His voice turned serious. "Back off. Give Nina some space so she can breathe."Helen stood up and glared at me with venom in her eyes.Enduring the agonizing pain in my abdomen, I looked at John and said coldly, "Stop acting like you care about me. It makes me sick."John froze at my words.I thought his Favoritism Meter would rise, but to my surprise, it dropped again. "Nina..." His voice was hoarse as he apologized. "I shouldn't have knocked you unconscious. I'm sorry."Ivan gently took my hand and blew air onto it, trying to warm my cold fingers.I sneered, "Ivan, don't touch me. Your fake concern makes me want to throw up."But he ignored me and only tightened his grip on my wrist. His face went pale as he whispered, "How did you become... this thin?"Ivan no longer cared about giving themselves away. He turned anxiously to John and asked, "Didn't you say what we ate every day provided the bare minimum

Helen's face went pale as she screamed. The moment my slap landed, Ivan stopped pretending to limp and rushed over. He shoved me hard, sending me sliding several feet across the sand."Nina, have you lost your mind?" Ivan yelled at me.My back scraped along the sand and gravel. The pain was so intense that I couldn't even speak.Helen covered her face and burst into tears. "I don't want to go home anymore..."John walked over with a grim expression and struck the back of my head. The last thing I saw before I blacked out was the Favoritism Meter above their heads rising sharply.I smiled in satisfaction and lost consciousness.I had no idea how long I'd been out. Through the haze, I heard Ivan's urgent voice."You hit her way too hard! She's completely out cold!"John raised his voice. "You're blaming me? Nina's back is covered in wounds from the gravel!"He let out a heavy sigh. "We really went too far this time. Should we continue with the final test?"Ivan replied, "Mayb
