LOGINJUNE’S POV
Tuesday came faster than I expected.
He was exactly where he said he’d be.
I got to the library after my counseling session with Miss Justice.
He was leaning back in his chair, tie loose and locks of hair falling out of place.
“You’re late,”
“I’m on time.” I responded.
“That’s not how it looks from here.”
“Have you ever considered that your perception might be,” I started. “…wrong”
He let out a laugh and I looked at him confused.
How was that funny?
I brought out my notes and noticed he picked up the textbooks I had brought out the last time.
“How did you know what textbooks I use?”
He just shrugged his shoulders and muttered, “I’m really observant.”
“Alright, we’re starting with what you actually do not understand.”
“Everything?”
“Excuse me?”
I stared at him.
“You’re joking.” I said dryly.
“I wish I was.”
“Okay, we’ll just use the syllabus. First topic, democracy and participation.”
We started on the work and I explained from the beginning to the end.
“It’s about power, who has it and how they use it. Start with elections, we use a system called First Past the Post.”
“Meaning?”
“Whoever gets the most votes wins, even if it’s not the majority.” I explained.
“So why use it?”
“To be simple, it produces a clear winner and it’s easy to operate.”
“So it is efficient but not necessarily representative?”
“Exactly.” I responded.
We were able to cover two topics.
“Is this correct?” He asked.
I glanced at his work.
“It’s not terrible.”
“Is that supposed to be an insult?”
“It’s progress.” I replied.
“So if the system isn’t fair, why do people accept it.” I shrugged.
“It works well enough.”
His lips curved slightly.
“That sounds familiar, like us.” He gestured between us.
I looked up to correct him when I realized he wasn’t looking at the page anymore.
He was looking at me.
“Focus.” I said dryly.
“I am.”
“You’re not.”
After our study session, we both decided to rest for a bit.
“You never returned the jersey, you know?”
I paused.
“I forgot to take it off.”
“Sure.” He said sarcastically.
“You looked good in it.” He added.
“In what?”
“My jersey.” He smiled.
I didn’t respond.
Silence stretched between us.
Not awkward.
Just comfortable.
“I should get going.” He broke the silence.
“Alright.” I said, not standing up.
“Thank you.” He said with a smile and left.
I was returning the books when an annoying voice spoke.
“You know he’s just gonna hurt you?” James said.
“Is he?” I rolled my eyes.
“Are you trying to get back at me by dating him?”
“Not everything is about you. If you’ll excuse me, I have somewhere else to be.” I responded.
“You’re going to regret this June, you’ll come back to me crying.”
As if.
I walked out to the courtyard and saw Jules running towards me.
“June! Have you seen it??”
“Seen what?”
“Adrien’s post,”
I frowned.
“No?”
She shoved her phone into my hand before I could say anything else.
The screen lit up.
Under the bright stadium lights, a girl in a red jersey was hugging a guy in matching colors.
I recognized the hair tie.
It was me and Adrien.
How did he even get a picture?
“It’s so cute.” Jules squealed.
It was. It looked so intimate.
It looked real.
A song played softly over the post. It was H.E.R by Daniel Caesar.
The caption read, “double wins.”
I blinked.
“Everyone is loving it.”
“When did he post it?” I asked, my voice higher than intended.
“A few minutes ago.”
I handed the phone back slowly.
“He didn’t tell me he was going to post it.”
“Does that bother you?” Jules asked.
I paused.
“No,” I replied.
And I meant it.
I just hadn’t expected it.
I checked the post on my phone.
I looked at the way my hands rested against him.
At how close we looked.
The angles were right, it looked intentional.
I looked at the comments.
“She won”
“Oh they were real??”
“Since when??”
“That’s my girl!” That was Jules’ comment.
I locked the screen.
“Like I said, you’ve made your debut.” Jules winked at me.
“Hi Mrs Adewale.” I greeted her mum as we reached her car.
“June honey. How are you?” She greeted.
“I’m okay.”
“Bye Mrs Hayes!” Jules said, not quietly, loudly.
Some people turned to look.
My cheeks had been tinted red.
I texted Adrien.
“Why didn’t you tell me before you posted that picture?”
Three dots appeared not long after.
“Oh, I didn’t think it was that deep. Sorry.”
Of course he didn’t, he had nothing to lose.
“Is there a problem?”
He added.
“No.” I responded.
“Good.
You want access June, this is what it looks like.”
I paused.
He wasn’t wrong.
This was what I wanted.
He started typing.
“People believe what they see.”
“What do they see now?” I replied.
He responded :
“They see us.”
This was a part of it.
Visibility.
Access.
As I walked home, I couldn’t help but think about the post.
Now that the noise had faded, my thoughts became louder.
Adrien had a following since he was an athlete and a player for a beloved club in north London.
This lie isn’t staying small.
And for the first time, I wondered if I could keep it under my control.
JUNE’S POVWalking into school today after what happened yesterday made it hard to focus. I kept replaying the conversations in my head as I brushed my teeth this morning.Adrien’s shirtless physique popped up in my head more than once and I had to shake it off.“June!” Jules yelled my name from afar, waving me in her direction.“Good morning.” I greeted.“You didn’t get my text?” She asked.“No, why?” I said as I pulled out my phone.“Don’t worry about it.” She said quickly and put my phone away. I didn’t read into it.“Let’s go for class, Savannah hasn’t shown up.” She said as the bell rang.“No surprise there.” I said with a bored expression.Literature lessons were fun, except today. My brain was begging to be released.“Get me out of here.” Jules whispered, looking as tired as I was.Miss Caroline made all of us give an account of two books we’d been revising.“Alright, submit your sheets and you can leave.” She said, smiling like she had fulfilled her life’s purpose.“Do you t

JUNE’S POV For one glorious second, I had no idea where I was. Then I remembered Adrien’s car. Then I remembered absolutely nothing after Adrien’s car.I looked up to see a half naked Adrien right in front of me. I gently pinched myself to know if I was dreaming or not.“You’re awake.” He simply said and walked over to the window with a tray of food in his hands. Just then, my stomach made a small noise and Adrien laughed. “Eat,” he said before walking towards his closet. “Why am I here?” I asked.“I kidnapped you.” He said with a small laugh before turning away. The way he was standing made the muscles on his back tense, and I found myself wondering how a teenager could be this ripped. Suddenly, as if he had sensed my gaze, he turned, and his eyes snapped up to look at me.Surprise flitted through his gaze, but it quickly transformed into an arrogant smirk then followed by a wink.I quickly focused on the food in front of me and ate in silence.“You’ve been sleeping for a long
ADRIEN’S POVThere was a reason people thought I was good at focusing under pressure. Unfortunately, none of those skills seemed to work around June. She hadn’t sat at our table since that first walk. She was always brightly beaming with Jules and another girl I didn’t recognize.“You’re staring again.” I heard Theo say. He didn’t even look up from the notebook in his hand.“I’m not staring.” I cleared my throat.“You absolutely are.” Max chimed in.“Have you tried any of our suggestions?” Max added as he stole a potato from my plate.“No.” I replied.“Why?” Theo looked up.“Because they’re stupid.” I said.“Which one?” Max replied.“By the way, that hurt our feelings.” Theo said, clutching his heart.“All of them?” I turned my attention to Max.“The playlist wasn’t stupid.” Theo defended, since it was his brilliant idea.“The playlist was twenty seven songs.” I deadpanned. Deep down, I actually loved the idea and was already planning on it.I just didn’t know what type of music Jun
JUNE’S POVThe name “James” sent my mind running. I kept my head down and focused on one of the books beside me instead of contemplating running out the door. I heard footsteps from the stairs but I could not make out a face because of the shelves.“James, this is June.” I heard Mr Lewis say and immediately raised my head.Instead of dirty blonde hair and green eyes, I saw ginger hair and soft brown eyes.I felt the relief in my bones.“Hello.” The boy waved at me. He didn’t look much older than me, maybe a year or two. They began talking in low voices and I took that time to walk a bit and check the books around me.There were a lot of bestselling novels like A Little Life, Book Lovers, Lord of The Rings and a lot others I recognized. They weren’t too expensive either.“June?” I heard my name and moved towards the pair.“Congratulations. Welcome to the store, James will give you a tour since I have some things to finish up.” Mr Lewis explained and went into his office, leaving me a
JUNE’S POV Apparently, Dad didn’t just collapse, he sprained his ankle badly. That meant he couldn’t work.Mum and I knew the implications. Just a week ago, I let myself hope. I hoped that things might finally get easier. Life does have a way of reminding you of your reality.“June.” Jules’ pulled me back.“You’ve been staring at that tree for ten minutes.” She told me.I blinked and looked away from the window.“What are you thinking about?” She asked.“Is it your dad?” She added, no smile on her face. That was how I knew she was worried.“I’ll figure it out.” I responded.“You always say that,” she retorted.“Because I always do.” The words came out sharper than I intended.Guilt settled quickly in my stomach. She moved closer and nudged my shoulder.“Your mum is there too, you know? You don’t have to carry everything yourself.” She said sternly.I nodded.Soon, it was time for Adrien and I’s revision. “You’re doing great by the way.” I said mindlessly as he answered the questio
