"What's wrong? Can't even shift now?"

The voice cut right through Liora. She pressed her back against the cold wall of the dressing room and tried to breathe.

"Pathetic. Weak Omega bitch."

That was Danny the club manager. Thick neck, gold rings on every finger, breath that always smelled like cheap whiskey and worse decisions. He stood in the doorway with his arms crossed, looking at her the way people looked at roadkill.

Liora's wolf stirred faintly inside her. A flicker. That was all she got these days — a flicker.

"I said I'd pay you back." Liora kept her voice steady. "But I'm not going out there and letting drunk men buy my time."

Danny stepped closer. "See that VIP booth out there?" He jerked his head toward the curtain. The bass from the main floor thudded through the walls like a second heartbeat. "Tonight, you're going to make sure he has a very good time."

Liora didn't move.

"Scared already?" His lips stretched into something that wasn't a smile. "It's a wet party, sweetheart. All for him. Now go get pretty."

She turned away. Picked up her lip gloss. Stared at her own reflection like a stranger.

That's when she heard her the small, tired voice that lived somewhere behind her ribs.

Liora.Freya. Her wolf. Getting weaker by the day.

"I know," Liora whispered, so low no one else could hear.

Ever since we awakened at eighteen, I've been holding on. But now we need our mate's touch just to stay alive. I can feel myself fading.

"Don't say that." Liora's jaw tightened. "We're in this together. We've always been in this together, Freya."

Then do something.

Liora set down the lip gloss. She had a plan. A bad one, probably, but it was all she had.

We'll sneak out the back. Find Leoric. He's my mate he'll recharge us. It'll be quick.

She pulled her jacket off the hook and moved toward the side exit, keeping close to the wall, stepping around the broken amp that had been on the floor for three weeks.

She almost made it.

Then the curtain swung open and the noise of the main floor swallowed her whole — music, laughter, the slick smell of bodies and spilled drinks. And there, right in the center of it all, was the wet party in full swing.

Liora stopped walking.

Because across the room, sitting alone in the VIP section with a glass he hadn't touched, was a man she had never seen before.

And Freya — her dying, fading, barely-there wolf — sat up straight.

Liora shook her head and kept moving. Past the bar. Past the dancers. Almost to the door.

"Filthy Omega." A hand grabbed her arm from behind. One of Danny's guys — she could tell by the grip. "Think you can just walk out?"

"Sir — hey!" She twisted, her elbow catching his ribs, and stumbled sideways — directly into the VIP section to the path of the man with the untouched drink.

He looked up slowly.

Liora opened her mouth. Closed it. Then said the only thing that came to mind.

"I can cure your erectile dysfunction!"

Dead silence in a two-foot radius.

The man stared at her.

She stared back.

"Thank you," said an older gentleman two seats down, pressing a hand to his heart. "You're an angel."

Liora blinked. That wasn't who she'd been talking to.

She felt it then — a warmth moving through her chest, slow and steady, like sunlight through a window. Freya stretched inside her, surprised. Alive.

Why am I getting energy from him? He's not even my mate.

The man in the VIP seat — the one she'd accidentally propositioned — leaned back in his chair. His face gave nothing away.

"No need," he said, voice flat and unbothered. "My equipment works just fine."

What an arrogant

But the warmth was still there. Spreading. Real.

Holy moon goddess, Freya breathed. We're saved.

Liora pressed her lips together and said nothing. Just filed that information away somewhere important.

This stranger — whoever he was — could charge her up too.

She'd thought only a mate could do that.

She had a lot of questions. But right now, she was already twenty minutes late.

The restaurant was the kind of place with cloth napkins and candles on every table. Liora pushed through the door still smoothing her hair, still a little breathless, clutching the small gift bag she'd wrapped herself that morning.

"Happy birthday, honey." She spotted Leoric at a corner table and made her way over, sliding into the seat across from him. "Sorry I'm late. You will not believe the night I just had—"

Leoric's phone was face-down on the table. He picked it up before she could see the screen.

"Hey, babe." He didn't quite meet her eyes. "Still swamped with work stuff. Why don't you head home first? I'll catch up with you later."

Liora set the gift bag down slowly.

"Relax." She kept her voice light. "I'll wait. A birthday boy shouldn't sit alone."

Leoric smiled. It didn't reach his eyes.

Liora smiled back. Hers didn't either.

But under the table, her hand curled around the edge of her chair — and somewhere deep inside her, Freya went very, very quiet.

Liora knew immediately that this was going to go badly. There was no version of this hallway, at half past one in the morning, with her in this nightdress and him standing there like that, that was going to end sensibly.Elias looked at her.She looked at him."Have you forgotten the deal?" he asked."I didn't come out here on purpose," she said. "I needed air. That's all.""You needed air.""Yes.""At half past one.""I couldn't sleep.""In that." His eyes didn't move from her face. He was making a very deliberate effort to keep them there and she was very aware of it."I didn't know you'd be in the corridor," she said. "I wasn't planning this.""I didn't say you were planning it." He took one step closer. "The deal wasn't about your intentions, Liora. It was about what happens. Whether you mean to or not." He stopped close enough that she could feel the warmth coming off him in the dark hallway. "And right now what's happening is you standing in front of me at half past one in—" He

Leoric looked at her across the table like a man who had rehearsed this and was now hoping the rehearsal had been enough. "I want us to try again," he said. Liora said nothing. "I know what I did. I know there's no excuse for it." He leaned forward slightly. "But I'm asking you. Give me a chance to fix it." "You cheated on me," she said. "I know." "In a restaurant. On your birthday. While I was bringing you a gift." "I know, Liora." "And then Elowen stood over me and called me worthless while you said nothing." She kept her voice even. "That's what I'm supposed to forgive." "I'm not asking you to forget it." He held her gaze. "I'm asking you to give me a chance to be better than that." Liora looked at him. She thought about Freya. About the deal she'd made last night in Elias's study. No seduction. No proximity. No reasons to be close. And underneath that deal, the problem Freya had laid out plainly — they still needed a mate bond to survive. Without it Freya kept fading.

She closed her room door and Freya started immediately.Take it back."I can't take it back." Liora dropped onto the bed. "It's done. I agreed."Then go back and unagreed."That's not a word."I don't care if it's a word. Go back to that study and tell him the condition doesn't work for you and think of something else—"Freya." Liora pressed her fingers to her temple. "I got the debt cleared. That was the whole point of being here. The whole reason I walked into this house."And what about staying alive? Freya's voice dropped. The anger went out of it and something more honest came in. Liora. Think about what you just agreed to. No proximity. No positioning. No reasons to be near him. A pause. Do you know what happens to me if you keep that deal?Liora stared at the ceiling. She knew.I was dying when we got here, Freya said quietly. You remember what that felt like. The fading. The cold. The way I could barely hold on. A pause. Being close to him every day in this house has been the

Dinner was quiet.Niko carried most of the conversation the way he usually did, moving between topics with no particular logic — his competition, a boy at school who could whistle with two fingers, whether wolves could swim faster than sharks. Elias answered each one with the same patient attention he always gave his son regardless of what else was sitting in his head.Liora ate and listened and didn't look at Elias directly more than twice. He didn't look at her at all. After Niko was sent upstairs, Liora began clearing her side of the table."Come to my study when you're done," Elias said.He said it on his way out. No preamble. No particular tone. She looked at his back as he left and told herself it was nothing to be nervous about.---She knocked. He said come in.He was already behind the desk. Jacket off, sleeves rolled to the elbow, the lamp on, a folder closed in front of him that he wasn't reading. He looked up when she entered and gestured to the chair. She sat.And waited

Sophia picked up on the second ring."Tell me everything," she said. "You sent that text thirty minutes ago and I have been waiting—""She planted a necklace in my room," Liora said.Silence."She what.""A necklace. Fifty thousand dollars. Hidden under my things." Liora sat on the edge of her bed and pressed her free hand flat on her knee. "She came while Elias was out, went straight to my room, planted it, and then when he came home she started the whole — my necklace is missing, I need to search her room — performance.""Elowen." Sophia's voice had gone very quiet in the way it did before it got very loud."Had to be.""Liora. She tried to brand you a thief.""I know.""A fifty thousand dollar thief. In the home of the most powerful Alpha in the North." Sophia exhaled hard. "That girl has lost her entire mind.""I don't even care anymore who put it there." Liora leaned back. "As long as everyone in that room knows I didn't take it. That's all that matters.""And do they?""Niko tol

"I didn't take it."Liora said it before anyone moved. Clear and direct, looking at Elias, not at Elowen."I have never seen that necklace before today. I didn't touch it. I didn't put it there." She held his gaze. "I swear on everything."The room was quiet.Elowen's hand was still outstretched, the necklace sitting in her palm, catching the lamplight.Morris said nothing. Elias said nothing. The silence was the kind that asked questions nobody wanted to be the first to answer. Then a small voice."I took it."Every head in the room turned.Niko was standing two steps forward from where he'd been. His chin was up. His eyes were on his father. His hand had let go of Liora's at some point without her noticing."Niko—" Elias started."I took it," Niko said again. Steady. Committed. "It was in Liora's room and I found it and I thought it would look nice on her so I put it under her stuff." He looked at his father without blinking. "It wasn't Liora. It was me."The silence took on a diffe
