Liana’s POV

I feel warm. In fact, I feel hot.

My eyelids are heavy, and when I finally open them, a rosy sunlight floods my sight.

Bizarre dreams of enormous Wolves and moonlit forests fade away, leaving me in a state of confusion. I realize I’m not in my bed. The grass brushes against my cheek, and the air is refreshingly cool. My nightdress is soaked with dew, accompanied by a symphony of birds, wind, and the gentle sound of flowing water surrounding me.

There’s another noise as well; a low, steady breathing.

Something substantial is pressing down on my waist.

My eyes widen as memories rush back to me.

The alpha, the siege, and my abduction from my homeland.

To make matters worse, Callum has me nestled against his chest. He must have drawn me close while he was asleep. I must have allowed it. Goddess!

I attempt to wriggle away, but a soft snarl rumbles in his throat. My heart races as I push against his heavy forearm. This time, his growl is low and menacing. His fingers are spread

  • Alpha Ethan   CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Liana’s POVThe wind intensifies around us as we ride out of the valley. It feels as wild and unrestrained as the emotions swirling in my stomach. Even the mountains appear to shift as the gust sweeps through the grass and trees. But the mountains stand firm. And so must I.I can’t allow anyone to see that I am terrified of the fate that awaits me when we confront the Wolf King. After several hours of riding, and at my insistence, we paused to eat some more bread and hard cheese, much to Callum’s annoyance. To be honest, I’m not really hungry. Each hour we ride brings us closer to the Wolves, and a part of me wishes to postpone what’s coming, to mentally prepare myself.Just as we are about to set off again, with Callum packing up the horse, the sky suddenly opens up.I gasp. I have never witnessed rain like this—so fierce, loud, and drenching. It makes the rain I’ve encountered over the last few days seem mild in comparison. It streams down my face, my lips—causing my hair to cling t

  • Alpha Ethan   CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Liana’s POVI take my time to wash myself. For the first time ever, I find relief behind a tree.I spend several minutes soaking in the view—standing on the shore, watching my breath mist in front of me as the sun gradually rises over the loch.Back at the castle in the King’s City, I only ever witnessed the sunrise through my grimy, bolted window. The servants would already be bustling about in the courtyard below, while the ladies-in-waiting fussed around me.I can’t recall a moment when I’ve experienced such vast, unbroken silence.I inhale. Then exhale.Gentle waves lap against the pebbles at my feet.By the time I navigate my way back up the rocks, at least fifteen minutes must have gone by, and I’m shivering. The hem of my nightdress is soaked, and strands of my hair cling to my damp face. Yet, I feel better. Revitalized. The cold seems to have jolted some of the dread right out of me.To my surprise, Callum has rekindled the fire, even though he was eager for us to depart. He s

  • Alpha Ethan   CHAPTER TWELVE

Liana’s POVWe possess the strength to triumph in this battle. We continue our journey. The night remains still, broken only by the sound of the horse’s hooves and the gentle rustle of the wind through the trees. It highlights our solitude in this vast expanse. How isolated I feel—with a man who is scheming against my father. His chest rises and falls rhythmically against my back."What makes you so confident that Marius has what you seek?" I inquire.I can sense him weighing his response. "I have my informants.""You mean you have spies within Marius’s castle." I remember his unwavering belief that he would escape while I treated John’s injuries. "They allowed you to leave the kennels, I assume?""Indeed. And they verify what . . . what someone from the Lowfell Clan has been informing us." His voice grows somber, and I gather that this individual is not held in high regard by the alpha."But you didn’t locate it.""It wasn’t in the place we anticipated."I recall the devastation we c

  • Alpha Ethan   CHAPTER ELEVEN

Liana’s POV"Are you familiar with the tale of the Elderwolf?" the alpha inquires.Away from the camp, the night is as dark as coal. I can hardly see, but I can hear the wind rustling the water of the loch we ride alongside, and I can smell the rain-soaked evergreen trees and the masculine aroma of the man behind me."The first wolf?" I respond. "Yes. That’s common knowledge."He allows the silence to linger, anticipating my next words."He plotted with the Moon and betrayed the Sun and the first men," I continue. "He was doomed to wander the earth on four legs, living as beastly as his deeds were."The term "beastly" escapes my lips. It’s the word the High Priest always uses when recounting this tale. With the alpha as my sole listener, alone in this strange kingdom, I question whether I should have chosen my words more carefully."Indeed. I suppose that’s how you would narrate it in the Southlands." He sounds contemplative. "It’s true, we were cursed. But that’s not entirely how the

  • Alpha Ethan   CHAPTER TEN

Liana’s POVI take a moment to look at the bread before realizing there’s no graceful way to eat it. I dig in, taking a swig from the flask to wash it down.Once I finish, the girl is still watching me with suspicion. John, on the other hand, looks pretty chill next to her."How’s your arm?" I ask him.He slowly stretches it out, moving stiffly and clenching his fist a few times. "It’ll be fine. I’ll be back in the ring soon enough." Even in the dim light, I can see his cheeks are flushed. "I... um... Thanks for what you did for me.""No need to thank me. I wish you hadn’t had to go through that."When his female friend whispers something to him and pulls on his good arm, he nods and then looks at me. "We’ll be over here if you need anything."They move a few feet away to sit down."She’s cool, Becky," I hear him say softly to her. "She’s not like the rest."The guys are gathered around the fire, sipping on some amber drink that I assume is alcohol. They’re far enough that I can’t cat
