Moon Phase 1: Do I have a choice?

(EL's POV)

I gasped for air while hearing the rustle of leaves. In a blitz, I saw Uncle Rankin charging towards me. The look in his eyes felt like two daggers piercing through me. My body couldn't react quickly enough to dodge his attack. He almost killed me again if he didn't stop.

Both of us started laughing. We lied down on the grass; my uncle took his robe while slowly turning back in his human form. His knife-like claws disappearing in his hands, the elongated muzzle replaced by his human face. It still amazes me seeing someone else shapeshifting, even though I've seen it countless times.

The sky gets darker, I know that he could also smell the rain about to drop.

"You can now control not to change your form EL."

"Why do we need to do this?" I asked him a bit irritatingly. His laugh thundered in response.

"How many times have I heard that from you?" while fixing his clothes. I know the reason why the humans refuse to accept our race. I sighed in disgust.

"They are a stubborn creature, and they will always be the last to admit their defects." his face changed more serious while talking about the humans. He stretched out his hand to help me stand. He always wears a smile and he's my favorite uncle. Being a werewolf will always be a challenge in this cruel society, it's a good thing that I have my uncle to teach me all that needs to be learned.

Live in peace even if humans despise us, that's what he always tells me.

"They can never learn to do that." while giving me a pat on the shoulder. "Resting time is over, you know what's up." I closed my eyes, human education, business management... the most boring schedule in my whole day.

“Let’s meet in your study room at 4PM sharp.”

Protesting against him would be in vain, I simply nodded in return. He turned his back on me as my father's assistants approach me.

"Young lord EL, supper is about to be served shortly." the butler offered me a towel. It's time to clean myself up so I head inside the door of our family's mansion.

While changing my clothes, I could hear loud shouts of my father (the pack's alpha) and his wife from across the rooms. My father remarried after my mother died.

My Mom… why she needs to die?

She lost control of herself because of a human. Humans... I blame them for my mother's death. They act like they're the victims all the time, but they are responsible of everything. I despise them.

"Well done Young Lord EL." their heads gently bow while I check myself in the mirror. I could see my mother's dark gold eyes in me. The house has never been the same without her presence.

"Fear and love does not walk together." I remembered her words one winter night as she cuddles me in front of the fireplace. Her dark brown hair was streaked with a few strands of gold, her skin glowed in the firelight and she had the brightest eyes I've ever seen. She always looked the same for as long as I could remember.

The rain started to fall when I went outside. I could see the Grand Alpha waiting for me to join the supper. The butler escorts me to my seat.

Feared and respected by his peers. The Grand Alpha is considered to be the strongest of the pack. His aids quietly stand in their positions surrounding us. His new consort, Tasha, doesn't seem to be enjoying her time. The two of them have started to be with each other just recently but she's already asking for separation. My father is a proud man with an image to take care of, he will never grant her request.

I slightly shook my head to the truth; our kind are very possessive. Once we get a hold of you, consider yourself to be our possession for the rest of your lives. I choose to just ignore them out of respect. Until I hear something hurling towards Tasha. I manage to catch the spear avoiding her to get a direct hit. She stand from her seat out of shock while the Alpha's assistants shield us from harm.

"This is what I'm trying to tell you Tyros! I will end up just like your—."

"Dad, it's the twins. They hate her." I tried to say something to stop her from mentioning my mother. "There's no need to worry Tasha." she somehow stops talking when I speak. "You're safe with the Alpha, trust me." while I put the spear on the table. I could see her breathing heavy and flustered. She should know the risks of having the Grand Alpha as her husband. Women like her are only after the wealth not the affection from my father.

The servants start to serve the supper. The rain was still falling giving the smell of wet grass. Later on... I smile as soon as I see the twins being brought up to us. Uncle Rankin's sons, Seven and Steve. They struggle while trying to free themselves from my dad's assistants.

"She's a who—." I glared at them before they could finish speaking. They tried to protest, "She's a whore and a bitch." but I stopped them, by using telepathy. I gave them a naughty smile as if to tell them that their pranks are getting a bit out of hand.

Be nice to humans even if they're not. We are the more superior race, best not put ourselves in their position. I give the twins a wink.

Uncle Rankin arrives and asks for apology on behalf of the twins.

"Next time brother, I won't bring them. They will not be spared for my punishment." the two hides behind me like puppies. I look at them and shake my head, what can I say, they're just kids.

"Seven, Steve, come with me." The two kids obeyed their father without any protest.

My father looks more mad at Tasha's behavior rather than the twins', he chooses to stay calm and continue eating. Tasha left the table, I'm sure that she lost her appetite after almost getting killed.

It's now just me and my father sitting in front of the table. Our other family relative’s reputation of being disrespectful towards Tasha prevent them to join the supper.

"You need to come with me tomorrow." his voice sounds deeper when speaking to me, glanced towards me.

"Do I have a choice?" I looked back while taking a drink of the wine. He gave me a Dad smile. Even he, too tired dealing of the family business, criticism, and blames.

Being the one next in line to become the Grand Alpha, I need to learn how to become one. Apart from being the most skilled fighter of the pack, an alpha must also have a fair amount of intellect paired with a fitting education. Alphas hold a lot of riches and I must learn to handle them properly.

My father has been dealing with a lot of criticism from his peers. They blame him for his leadership in dealing with the attacks on our kin.

A band of werewolves lived with the humans decades ago, there affinities with the humans produced the half breeds. A pure-blooded werewolf has complete control of themselves when they change their shape, but the half breeds have strayed away from that ability. Half breeds are the cause of the savage attacks in the human villages, but humans blame all our kind in general. They hire vampires to protect themselves from wolves, calling themselves the Wolf Slaughter. Tss. I call them blood scums. They serve the humans in exchange for blood, how pathetic.

The war between the vampires and werewolves have ended for more than a century. A truce has been agreed with both sides nearing its extinction. A new war will arise if we let these new problems go out of hand.

Luxurious cars arrive, my father expects his visitors. I've overheard them talking about the problems that are being faced by our kind. It's not my time yet to join their council. For now, I must meet Uncle Rankin, he's an impatient man and doesn't want to be kept waiting. And the butler approach me reminding me about my 4PM appointment.

I circled my thumb on my temple on my way to the study room. I arrive to see Uncle Rankin giving a twin a punishment.

"You're not allowed to leave your seats until you've finished reading those books and answer all of my questions." he blurts at them. A stack of books was placed in front of them. Pity pup eye asking for a forgiveness to their father.

"Take it easy on them Uncle Rankin." trying to ease up the atmosphere. The twins tried to rush towards me, but their father pulled them back to their seats.

"It's better if you just do it guys, you got away with it easily this time if you ask me."
