MOMENTS AFTER ORION'S ESCAPE

The alarms still screeched through the underground facility when Malcolm stormed down the corridor, guards scrambling to keep up with his pace. The air tasted of metal and recycled ventilation, thick with panic.

“Spread out,” he snarled. “Find them. Find all of them.”

Half the guards peeled away, chasing after the trail Orion and Rey had left behind. The rest followed Malcolm deeper into the reinforced wing in the lower level, reserved for the children.

Rey walked into the North alone. No escort. No allies. Only the crushing weight in her chest and the sudden awareness that she might be making a fatal mistake, but she wasn't one to back down from a fight, especially when the lives of her brother and thousands of others were at stake. She'd only made it a few steps in when hulking figures blended into the shadows blocked her path. She halted, her heart racing as she stared wide-eyed at a nightmare made flesh. The creatures standing before her weren't Lycans; no, they stood over seven feet tall, their frames bulging with muscles, mangy dark fur covering almost half their bodies beneath tattered clothes, with sharp fangs glinting in the moonlight.Their red eyes tracked her every movement, as though they were waiting for her to make the wrong move so they could tear her apart. She swallowed the fear threatening to throttle her and gritted her teeth.“My name is Reylin, and I'm here to speak to Councillor West,” she said, her voice echoi

“Unlike other Lycans, silver isn’t fatal to us; nothing is...” he trailed off, eyes snapping to hers. “Except one poison,”“Kronuvitch.” ***“What kind of poison is that? I don’t think I’ve ever heard of it,” Rey mused, her nose scrunching up in a small frown.Orion let out a low, dark chuckle, one that rumbled like distant thunder as he stepped closer to her.“It’s made using knowledge of the dark arts,” he said, his voice dipped in something ancient and unsettling. “Only a handful of people alive can craft it or have knowledge of its existence.”She blinked rapidly. “The dark arts? Orion, what—”He cut her off, his gaze sharp and heavy with meaning.“The blade you stabbed me with… it was coated with that poison.”Her breath snagged. “What?”A gasp tore free, her eyes widening in horror. “Orion, I—I swear, I didn’t know. I only meant to incapacitate you long enough to escape—I didn’t—”He silenced her with a kiss. His lips on hers were slow, steady and devastatingly tender, shatteri

The children and nursery teachers looked up as soon as he entered, their eyes wide and alarmed upon seeing him.The guards strolled in, scattering toys, opening every door, overturning blankets and shoving cribs aside in search of Beau. Still, he found nothing. His breath came out in a vicious growl.“Where is my son!” He snapped at the teacher, who cowered, shaking her head quickly.Malcolm glowered at her, seething at the incompe

Rey woke to an empty, cold stretch of sheets beside her. For a moment she blinked through the haze of sleep, disoriented, but it didn't take long for her mind to catch up. Orion had been gone for a while. She pushed herself upright, the quiet of dawn settling around her. Outside the window, the sun was just beginning to rise, bleeding soft strokes of orange and gold across the sky.A tiny, unwelcome thought whispered its way into her mind—had he slipped out because he felt guilty about last night? She banished it almost immediately. There was a war at their doorstep. He'd probably left early to prepare, careful not to disturb her. That explanation sat better. Still, she hoped it wasn't guilt. Because even though her mind hadn't been clear at first, she'd wanted him, and he'd shown restraint – so much of it. Afraid she would regret it, afraid to take advantage. That alone warmed her chest.Smiling to herself, she slipped out of bed and headed to the bathroom, splashing cool water on he

The castle was silent when Orion jerked awake.Rey was fast asleep in the cage of his arms, her breath soft against his chest, her body warm and limp with exhaustion. For a moment, he didn't move; he only watched her, the faint rise and fall of her chest, the peace on her face that she rarely ever knew.He had just begun to relax back into the pillows when a low, distant sound cut through the night. A stifled shout in light of a small commotion outside, followed by boots pounding the earth and metal clattering. His eyes snapped open fully, his muscles tensing in alarm. Something was wrong.Slowly—painfully slowly—he peeled his arm from under her. She stirred but didn't wake, only pressed her face deeper into the pillow. He pressed a soft kiss to her hairline and tucked the blanket around her one last time before slipping from the bed.He didn't dare risk the door banging so as not to wake her, so he held the handle and eased it shut behind him.The hallway was dimly lit by sconces on

Orion didn't breathe at first when he heard the words leave her lips in a fragile whisper, yet it hit him like a blow. Something inside him cracked, and finally, he gave in.A low, resigned sound slipped from him as he tugged off his boots and climbed into the bed, settling beside her the same way he had the night before. Except this time the air vibrated with something sharper, needier and harder to control. His arms wrapped around her, enclosing her in a cocoon of warmth she clung to instinctively. She melted into him instantly, her forehead against his chest, her fingers clutching the fabric of his tunic like she feared he might vanish if she let go.But the heat didn't fade. It pulsed, simmering under her skin, demanding more. She knew the moment she pulled away; it would slam into her a thousand times worse."Orion?" Rey murmured in a low trembling voice, and Orion hummed, the vibrations of the sound travelling from his chest straight to the pit of her stomach. She sighed, pursin
